Feeling trapped? Like something is closing in on you and you're ill equipped to deal with it or protect yourself?

Potions

Potions

PotionCraft 101

Introduction:

The dictionary defines the word potion as "a dose or drink, especially of liquid medicine or poison." It derives from the Latin potare, which means "to drink."

Potioncraft (the making and use of magickal potions) has been a talent of most Witches since the earliest of times. It has been dramatized in great works of literature (the most famous being the Witches' scene in Shakespeare's Macbeth), is mentioned in the Holy Bible, and is without a doubt the forerunner to the world of modern medicine much in the same ways that astrology is to astronomy and alchemy is to science.

For me personally, Potions are anything that is made with focused intent and made by hand. This includes incense, oil blends, teas, essential oils, powders, inks and tinctures. We will learn a bit about each.

Potions have been used to heal the sick, invoke spirits and deities, divine the future, bring harm or death to enemies and rivals, control the weather, and conjure forth the greatest of magickal power. In ancient grimoires there even exist curious potions designed for invisibility, flight, and shape shifting as well as potions which are supposed to bring the dead back to life.

But of all potions ever brewed, ancient and modern ones alike, perhaps the one most widely sought after is the philter (pronounced like the world filter and more commonly known as a love potion). This not only reflects the basic human need to be loved, but also lays the foundation for the popular craft of love magick.

Some potions are intended for drinking, but some are not because they may contain herbs or other ingredients that are dangerous to one's health. Do not drink any potion without researching the ingredients you will be using and the properties of the herb.

Throughout this class you will encounter the names of herbs, and oils and the planets, elements, and so forth, which they are ruled by. For individuals who are new to the magickal arts, let me explain exactly what this means: When it is said that an herb or oil is "ruled by" a particular planet, element, or astrological sign, this indicates that the magickal nature of the herb or oils is influenced by the energies associated with that particular planet, element, or astrological sign.

When two or more things are said to be corresponding, this simply means that the same magickal properties and energy vibrations are shared. For example, some of the correspondences found in love magick include: red or pink candles, Venus-ruled herbs and oils, all Pagan deities associated with love, heart symbols, love-attracting talismans, Fridays (ruled by Venus), all red fruits (especially apples and strawberries), rubies and so forth.

In the art of spellcraft, most Witches prefer to work magick with herbs, oils, colors, symbols, gemstones, lunar phases, deities, etc. that magicakally correspond to each other because this is believed to greatly enhance the power of all spells.

Blessings

Definitions and Making Herbal Preparations

Compress
Soak a soft cloth in a hot infusion, decoction, or 5-20 ml tincture
in 500 ml hot water. Squeeze out excess water and hold pad against
affected area.

Creams
A mixture of fats and water that blends with the skin to strengthen
and smooth it. Use 30 g lanolin, 15 oz beeswax, 100 g. vegetable or
fruit oil, and 30 ml herb water. Melt the lanolin and beeswax in a
double boiler, gently stirring in the oil. Remove from heat and
whisk in the herb water. Keep stirring as it cools. Store in wide
mouth jars.

Decoction
Made by simmering larger pieces of the herb, such as bark, roots, or
twigs. Use 30 g. dried or 60 g. fresh herb to 750 ml water; simmer
until the water is reduced to 500 ml. Drink 1/2 cup three times a
day.

Infused oils
--Hot infusion: 250 g. dried or 500 g. fresh herb to 750 ml Olive or
Vegetable Oil. Heat gently in a double boiler for 3 hours. Strain
through cheesecloth into dark bottles.

--Cold infusion: Pack a large jar with the herb. Cover it with cold-
pressed oil and put the lid on. Let stand in a sunny window sill for
2-3 weeks. Squeeze the oil through a jelly bag and repeat the
process. Store in dark glass bottles.

Infusion
A tea made by pouring boiled (not actively boiling) water over fresh
or dried herbs. Use approximately 30 g. dried or 75 g. fresh herbs
to 500 ml water. Drink 1/2 cup three times a day.

Macerate
To make, pour 500ml of cold water over 25g of herb and leave to
stand overnight. Then strain and use as you would a decoction.

Massage Oils
Use 5 drops essential oil to 20 ml carrier oil. Sweet almond,
jojoba, avocado or grapeseed make good carrier oils. You can also
used infused oils.

Ointment
A mixture of oils and fats that forms a protective layer over the
skin. Melt 500 g. petroleum jelly or soft paraffin wax in a double
boiler. Add 60 g. dried herb and simmer gently for 2 hours. Strain
through a jelly bag and pour into jars while still hot.

Plaster
Wrap the chopped or boiled herbs, or a paste made from them, in
cheesecloth or muslin before applying to the affected area. This is
good for herbs that might irritate the skin, such as mustard.

Poultice
Boil herbs in a little water for a hot poultice, or bruise or chop
slightly for a cold one. Smooth a little oil on the skin to keep the
herbs from sticking, apply the herb, and wrap with muslin or gauze
strips.

Steam Inhalants
Place a few tablespoons of the dried herb in a bowl and pour boiling
water over them. Drape a towel over your head and breathe in the
steam.

Syrup
An infusion or decoction preserved by adding sugar or honey. Use 500
ml infusion to 500 g sugar or honey; heat gently until the sweetener
has dissolved. Store in dark glass bottles with cork tops; screw top
bottles may explode if the mixture ferments.

Tincture
Steep the fresh or dried herb in a 25% mixture of alcohol and water.
Do not use methyl, grain, or rubbing alcohol as they are toxic.
Vodka is ideal; rum has the added benefit of covering unpleasant
flavors. Use 200 g. dried or 600 g. fresh herb to 1 liter alcohol
and water. Place in a sealed jar in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks,
shaking occasionally. Strain the liquid through cheesecloth and
store in a dark glass bottle. Take 5 ml three times a day, diluted
in a little fruit juice or water.

Tonic Wine
Pour 2 liters good quality wine, preferably red, over 500 g. dried
herb, making sure all the herb is covered by the wine. Cover and
leave for 2 weeks. Strain and take in 1/3 cup doses.

Wash
A tea or infusion meant only for external use. A mild form of a wash
would be 1/4 ounce of herb to one pint of boiling water, steeped
until lukewarm, then applied.

The Basics Of Brewing

Posted by: "ani_shadowdragon@peoplepc.com" ani_shadowdragon@peoplepc.com   mystressacksunamoon

Thu Apr 21, 2011 11:30 am (PDT)

The Basics Of Brewing

How you prepare your brew is just as important as what you brew. Both for health purposes and magikal intention.

· The Water:
It's best to use spring or distilled water for brewing, rather than normal tap water. Spring water is actually the best because it contains additional natural minerals that you won't find in tap water. Distilled water will do, because it does not contain the added florid you'll find in most city and county water systems through the tap. Well water also works because it come directly from mother Earth.

· The Mortar & Pestle:
A non metallic mortar and pestle should always be used when grinding herbs. However, you should never use the same mortar and pestle for herbs you plan on digesting with other herbs you use for oils, incense or other purposes. A marble mortar and pestle is always the best choice, but it's not a necessity.

· The Pot:
Once again a non metallic pot should be used for the brewing process. To day you can find various forms of tea pots at your local tea and coffee shop. There are few exceptions, a cast iron cauldron would be one. But cauldrons are not widely used today. Heating can be electric or gas however, microwaving is not recommended.

If you're using a cauldron, electric and gas heat is the easiest to use, but if you chose to go all out with fire, make sure you're not using pine, or mesquite of any kind. And please, please take all the necessary precautions.

You may also consider solar brewing. Preparing your herbal mixtures and brew bags as normal, placing them inside a clean glass jar. Secure the lid and place in direct sunlight preferably in a warm location out doors. It's best to leave the jar in the sunlight all day.

· The Herbal Brewer (the tea pouch)
What you place your herbs in is also important. The brewer should also be some other form than metal. You can also find pre-made tea bags where you provide the tea.

Cut a round coffee filter in half, or just use a V-shaped coffee filter. Once you have prepared your brewing herbs, place the mixture in the center of filter. Twist the filter to close around the herbs and secure with white nylon thread.

· The Vessel:
Once again, what you put your tea in to drink is also important. And once again, non metallic vessels are best.

Types of PotionCraft

Types of PotionCraft

Infusion- (Infusion = are made from leaves, flowers and light material) Put 1-2 teaspoons of herbal tea material into a brewing utensil of your choice and place in a 6-8 oz size cup. Add 6-8 oz of boiling water and allow to steep for up to 3-5 minutes. Increase the quantity of material accordingly if using a teapot. For a more "medicinal" effect steep 15-30 minutes. Will keep refrigerated for 24 hours. Infusions can also be added to brews or used to consecrate tools.

Tinctures

A tincture is created by soaking dried plant materials in alcohol,

the alcohol captures the odor. It is quick and easy and the

tinctures once finished can be used much in the same way the oil are

used. Now you should use the alcoholic beverage called "Everclear"

it is a 192-proof alcohol and it works great, but if it is not available, use a higher proof Vodka.

The plant materials must be dried because the fresh herbs are not suitable because of

the water content in them the plants aren't suitable in alcohol.

This is the simplest thing in the world to do... Grind the dried

herb and reduce it to as fine of a powder as you can. Next empower

the herb according to the magickal goal they are used for, put the

herb in to a small bottle with a tight fitting lid, pour just enough

alcohol over them to wet and cover them, cap tightly and shake the

bottle daily for a week, and each time seen in your mind the goal of

the magickal tincture. Then use a coffee filter and strain and

rebottle and cap. When the scent of the herb has completely over

powered the scent of the alcohol, strain once more. Rebottle add 3

to 4 drops of castor oil or glycerin to stabilize the fragrance.

Label and store them in a cool dry place out of sunlight. Tinctures

can be added to: Candles, Oils, Water, Ointments, sachets. Can be

used to anoint tools, candles and such.

Teas

Are used before divination or scrying, or relaxation before meditation

Decoction- (Decoction = are made from bark, roots, seeds, twigs and berries) Put 1-3 tablespoons of cut herb, seed, root, bark, etc into a pot of 16-32 oz of water and allow to sit in cool water for at least 5-10 minutes. Bring water to a slow boil then turn down to a simmer for 10-30 minutes. (This depends on the strength of the tea you enjoy) Strain and drink. Will keep about 72 hours if kept refrigerated. Decoctions are generally used in healing or medicinal remedies.

Incense

Incense is used for purification, cleansing, psychic awareness and to represent the element of Air. Because this is a more in-depth process, I will leave the majority of explanation for that lesson. In short, incense can be made with herbs, oils, wood, flowers, and sawdust.

Powders

Powders are used for sprinkling to expel your intentions into the universe, used in poppet magick or sachets. Powders can also be used on the person for attraction, be it love, money, abundance, etc.

Making a magical powder calls for cornstarch, arrowroot, or talcum. Or you can make your own white, pure powder with eggshells.

Aromatherapy

They are used in diffusers during meditation or ritual. You can also use the during ritual bath.

Magickal Inks

Many Witches use what are known as writing rituals to help make their intents manifest. These simply yet highly effective magickal spells call for the Witch's desire to be written down on piece of parchment with a fountain (or quill) pen, and then either burned in a fire, buried in the ground, or wrapped in an appropriate colored piece of stain and hidden away in a secret place.

Magickal inks, such as dragon's blood and dove's blood, are popularly used in the practice of writing rituals and also in the creation of parchment talismans. Traditionally, dragon's blood ink is used for spells involving power and strength, and dove's blood ink is used in all magickal workings connected with love, romance, and passionate emotions. Both dragon's blood and dove's blood inks can be bought in most occult shops and mail order catalogues specializing in Witchcraft supplies.

Regular fountain pen inks can also be used in place of the traditional magickal inks favored by many Witches. The most important thing to consider when working with these is the color of the ink, because different colors possess different magickal vibrations.

Black ink is useful in banishing rituals because black is a color that absorbs negativity and breaks curses, hexes, and jinxes. Blue ink should be used in spells that concern communication, healing, peace, the powers of the mind, and protection. Green ink is appropriate for all spellwork linked to abundance, fertility, money, Mother Nature, and prosperity. For magickal spells that are designed to enhance courage, energy , love or sexuality, a Witch should always work with red ink.

Jomemade magickal inks can be easily made from the juice obtained from crushed pomegranates or poke berries. (Use caution when working with poke for it is a very poisonous plant. Do not ingest it, and be sure to keep it out of the reach of children and pets.) Both the pomegranate and the poke (which is also known by its appropriate nickname of inkberry) are ruled by the element of Fire and posses strong masculine (yang) energy.

It is best to make magickal inks at the time of the waxing Moon, as this is the correct lunar time for the creation of a Witch's or magician's magickal tools. Your homemade inks will also be more magickally potent if you create them with intent. To properly do this, you must clearly state what your intent is and visualize it in your mind's eye as though it has already been made manifest as you make the ink.

Blended Oils

These are oils that have been blended with a carrier oil and other oils to obtain a magickal blend for the intent of the ritual or spellwork.

introduction and a question

Hello, I'm Nicol and I've just joined this group and also whispering witches group. I have been following my spiritual path for just four years so look forward to learning more from the groups. I have been studying and using the tarot, casting spells, doing Hindu pujas (I have an attachment to the Goddess Durga) and have also practiced some Ceremonial Magick but am more drawn to things witchy. I also practice Taoist Internal Alchemy and chi gung, and meditation.
I live in England with my partner and our three year old son, and our Sheltie dog. My partner is an occultist and we share many interests which is wonderful.
I have a question. How do you cellebrate the Full Moon? I am aware that the energy is powerful at the time of the full moon, and have used this in my spell work but I'd like to know how to honor the moon and I've heard of drawing down the moon but don't know how to do it. I'd love it it some of you would share how you honor the full moon. Thanks in advance.
Nicol
