The Magic of the Spider

Posted by: "Holly Stokes" holly@ravenmadness.com   hollyberrysheart

Ok so all night through my dreaming I had a huge spider that stayed on me.
it was huge but harmless but still creeped me out .where ever I went .. it
went with me. It would crawl all over my back mostly and sometimes go to the
top of my head and sit there. Spiders have always creeped me out and so this
was hard to deal with for most of the night. In my dreaming, I was just
doing daily life kind of stuff. running errands, housework, regular work
stuff and so on. The spider, no matter what I did . stayed on me though.
never falling or jumping off.

I kept telling myself . spiders are good omens.. spiders are good .. get
over it Holly. spiders are good.lol..

Eventually . I got over the creepy factor and was at peace with the spider
being on me. I knew the spider meant me no harm and wasn't going to bite me
so at some point I just settled down inside and accepted the gift of the
spider and a sense of calm and peace filled me.

So in honor of the spider that came to me in my dreaming last night, I want
to share with you the magic the spider brings to your life.

A spider totem teaches you balance -
between past and future, physical and spirit, male and female.
She is strength and gentleness combined.
She awakens creative sensibilities
and reminds you that the past is always interwoven with the future.

Spiders are the keepers of the primordial alphabet
and can teach you how to write creatively.
Her body is shaped like the number 8 and she has 8 legs,
which is symbol of infinite possibilities of creation.
Her 8 legs represent the 4 winds of change and the 4 directions of the
medicine wheel.

Spider's message is that you are an infinite being who will continue
to weave patterns of life and living throughout time.
Do not fail to see the eternal plan of creation.

Those who weave magic with the written word usually have this totem.

Many Blessings,

Beltane - Dancing In May Day

Beltane - Dancing In May Day

Beltane marks samos or the light (summer) half of the year. Along with winter, it was one of the two major seasons of the ancient Celts. It is celebrated from April 30th (May Eve) to May 1st (May Day). Our modern celebration is a descendant of the Celtic fire festivals.

Community bonfires, or Bel fires, were lit on hilltops in honor of the proto-Celtic god known by many names such as Bel, Bile, or Belenus. He was the "Bright One," a god of life and death, light and fire. The ancients believed that driving cattle between two bonfires would bless them with good milk production and fertility. Likewise, bonfire jumping was thought to provide fertility for couples and singles who wanted to attract a spouse.

Traditional maypole celebrations hint at the ancient fertility aspect of this holiday. This obvious symbol of male sexuality impregnating mother earth was at one time outlawed in an attempt to cleanse the celebration of its Pagan roots.

At this time, sacred marriages took place to bless the land through lovemaking. It was believed that a child born of this union was especially blessed to become a great leader. Modern Pagan groups usually reenact this tradition symbolically by dancing with ribbons around the maypole and/or with sacred tools such as the blade and chalice, though some may still practice the Great Rite as the sacred marriage is sometimes called.

May Eve was known as one of the spirit nights in Wales along with Samhain. It is a time when the spirits of the otherworld such as the fairies were very active. Because of this, it was also a fearful time for some. That fear was quickly relieved on May Day when the summer was carried in with much revelry. The thinning of the veil between the material and spiritual worlds at this time made it an auspicious time for witchcraft and divination.

The hawthorn tree was held sacred especially at this time of year. Blossoms from the tree can be used in your own celebration. Depending on where you live, it may be too early though. Of course, a green wreath with blossoms from your area will do just as well.

Dancing the maypole and jumping bonfires are still traditions celebrated today. Even stepping over a single candle can bring you closer to this tradition of calling in the summer. Just be careful what you wish for as you step over that flame. For it is said that jumping the Beltane fire will surely grant your desires.

Beltane: Its History and Modern Celebration in Wicca in America

Beltane: Its History and Modern Celebration in Wicca in America
By Rowan Moonstone

The celebration of May 1st, or Beltane as it is known in Wicca Circles, is one of the most important festivals of our religious year. I will attempt here to answer some of the most often asked questions about this holiday. An extensive bibliography follows the article so that the interested reader can do further research.

1. Where does the festival of Beltane originate?

Beltane, as practiced by modern day Witches and Pagans, has its origins among the Celtic peoples of Western Europe and the British Isles, particularly Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

2. What does the word Beltane mean?

Dr. Proinsias MacCana defines the word as follows:

"... the Irish name for May Day is Beltane, of which the second element, `tene', is the word for fire, and the first, `bel', probably means `shining or brilliant'."(1)
The festival was known by other names in other Celtic countries. Beltaine in Ireland, Bealtunn in Scotland, Shenn do Boaldyn on the Isle of Mann, and Galan Mae in Wales.(2)

3. What was the significance of this holiday to the ancients?

To the ancient Celts, it symbolized the coming of spring. It was the time of year when the crops began to sprout, the animals bore their young, and the people could begin to get out of the houses where they had been cooped up during the long dark cold winter months. Keep in mind that the people in those days had no electric lights or heat, and that the Celtic counties are at a much more northerly latitude than many of us are used to. At that latitude, spring comes much later, and winter lasts much longer than in most of the US. The coming of fair weather and longer daylight hours would be most welcome after a long cold and dark winter.

4. How did the ancient Celts celebrate this festival?

The most ancient way of observing this day is with fire. Beltane, along with Samhain (Nov. 1), Imbolc (Feb. 1), and Lughnassadh (Aug. 1), was one of the four great "fire festivals" which marked the turning points of the Celtic year. The most ancient records tell us that the people would extinguish all the hearth fires in the country and then relight them from the "need fires" lit by the druids (who used friction as a means of ignition). In many areas, the cattle were driven between two great bonfires to protect them from disease during the coming year. It is my personal belief, although I have no documentation to back up the assumption, that certain herbs would have been burnt in the fires, thus producing smoke which would help destroy parasites which might make cattle and other livestock ill.

5. In what other ways was this festival celebrated?

One of the most beautiful customs associated with this festival was "bringing in the May." The young people of the villages and towns would go out into the fields and forests at Midnight on April 30th and gather flowers with which to bedeck themselves, their families, and their homes. They would process back into the villages, stopping at each home to leave flowers, and to receive the best of food and drink that the home had to offer. This custom is somewhat similar to "trick or treat" at Samhain and was very significant to the ancients. John Williamson, in his study, The Oak King, the Holly King, and the Unicorn, writes:

"These revelers were messengers of the renewal of vegetation, and they assumed the right to punish the niggardly, because avarice (as opposed to generosity) was dangerous to the community's hope for the abundance of nature. At an important time like the coming of summer, food, the substance of life must be ritually circulated generously within the community in order that the cosmic circuit of life's substance may be kept in motion (trees, flocks, harvests, etc.)."(3)

These revelers would bless the fields and flocks of those who were generous and wish ill harvests on those who withheld their bounty.

6. What about maypoles?

The maypole was an adjunct to the festival of bringing in the May. It is a phallic symbol, and as such represented fertility to the participants in the festival. In olden days, the revelers who went into the woods would cut a tree and bring it into town, decking it with flowers and greenery and dance around it, clockwise (also called deosil, meaning "sun-wise", the direction of the sun's apparent travel across the face of the Earth) to bring fertility and good luck. The ribbons which we associate with the maypole today were a later addition.

7. Why was fertility important?

The people who originated this custom lived in close connection with the land. If the flocks and fields were fertile, they were able to eat; if there was famine or drought, they went hungry. It is hard for us today to relate to this concept, but to the ancients, it was literally a life and death matter. The Celts were a very close tribal people, and fertility of their women literally meant continuity of the tribe.

8. How is the maypole connected with fertility?

Many scholars see the maypole as a phallic symbol. In this aspect, it is a very powerful symbol of the fertility of nature and spring.

9. How did these ancient customs come down to us?

When Christianity came to the British Isles, many of the ancient holy sites were taken over by the new religion and converted to Christian sites. Many of the old Gods and Goddesses became Christian saints, and many of the customs were appropriated. Charles Squire says:

" An ingenious theory was invented after the introduction of Christianity, with the purpose of allowing such ancient rites to continue with a changed meaning. The passing of persons and cattle through flame or smoke was explained as a practice which interposed a magic protection between them and the powers of evil." (4)
This is precisely what the original festival was intended to do; only the definition of "evil" had changed. These old customs continued to be practiced in many areas for centuries.

"In Scotland in 1282, John, the priest in Iverkething, led the young girls of his parish in a phallic dance of decidedly obscene character during Easter week. For this, penance was laid upon him, but his punishment was not severe, and he was allowed to retain his benefice."(5)

10. Were sacrifices practiced during this festival?

Scholars are divided in their opinions of this. There is no surviving account of sacrifices in the legends and mythology which have come down to us. As these were originally set down on paper by Christian monks, one would think that if such a thing had been regularly practiced, the good brothers would most certainly have recorded it, if for no other reason than to make the pagans look more depraved. There are, however, some surviving folk customs which point to a person representing the gloom and ill fortune of winter being ostracized and forced to jump through the fires. Some scholars see this as a survival of ancient human sacrificial practices. The notion that animals were sacrificed during this time doesn't make sense from a practical standpoint. The animals which had been retained a breeding stock through the winter would either be lean and hungry from winter feed, or would be mothers nursing young, which could not be spared.

11. How do modern day pagans observe this day?

Modern day pagan observances of Beltane include the maypole dances, bringing in the May, and jumping the cauldron for fertility. Many couples wishing to conceive children will jump the cauldron together at this time. Fertility of imagination and other varieties of fertility are invoked along with sexual fertility. In Wiccan and other Pagan circles, this is a joyous day, full of laughter and good times.

12. What about Walpurgisnacht? Is this the same thing as Beltane?

Walpurgisnacht comes from an Eastern European background, and has little in common with the Celtic practices. I have not studied the folklore from that region and do not consider myself qualified to write about it. As the vast majority of Wiccan traditions today stem from Celtic roots, I have confined myself to research in those areas.

Beltane: Return To Feeling

Beltane: Return To Feeling
Author: Diotima Mantineia

The energy is unmistakable – green, electric, almost exploding with life – yes, it's Beltanetide again. Senses come alive – it's impossible not to be aware of it if you are at all connected to the natural world – and with the joy, the Aliveness, the final leaching away of winter's numbness, we are born into the Realm of feeling again.

In our rituals, writings and conversations, Pagans tend to emphasize the sexual aspect of Beltane, a Sabbat that celebrates the sensual coming together of Lovers, of Earth and Sun to yield the Harvest. And indeed, the sign of Taurus, under which Beltane falls, is ruled by Venus, the planet of love. But Taurus is Also very much about being fully in the body, rooted on the Earth, and the Spiritual work that can be done around Beltane encompasses but is not defined by Sexuality. It is defined by sensuality. To live fully on the Earth, to create a Life of joy, beauty and purpose, we must honor the body of the Earth, and that Honoring must start with our own bodies. It can begin nowhere else. If we do not Make a point of learning to love, nurture and honor our feeling bodies as the sacred creations of our souls and spirits, we will not be able to make a true Connection with the Earth and with each other – we will not be able to create the life and the world that we want.

Unfortunately, in the world we live in, learning to love our bodies is not an easy task. Millennia of misguided religious marginalization of the body and repression of sexuality have led to societies in which women are at best still fighting for full rights and at worst have their lives and bodies fully controlled by men, and the bodies of men and women both are considered legitimate fodder for war. Sexual abuse is rampant, unrealistic images of so-called bodily perfection are paraded in front of us daily and our health is compromised by sedentary, fluorescent-lit cube living and processed,
pesticide-tainted food.

But this is changing, as it must. And we have the most powerful force possible at our disposal to mediate this change so that we can create a society that values peace, freedom and relationship. That force is our connection with the Earth, which lets us know that our birthright is a life of joy, creativity and caring. Once we touch the joy that is at the heart of that connection with the Earth and allow ourselves to feel it, we magnify it many times, and then, with that energy, we create, we make magic. That's what magic is, after all – creating form and content in our lives from intent and raw energy.

Those who are skilled in the ways of magic know that magical creation is not confined to ritual. Our magical ability is inseparable from our daily lives. Because we practice patterning and working with energy, our personal energy field becomes strong, and that energy affects the world around us every moment of every day.

All of us, magically skilled or not, have a field of energy that surrounds us – call it an aura, or personal chi – and that energy, like a string on a guitar, both changes and is changed by the energy given off by the other strings. This is how our mass consensus reality is created. As magicians and shamans, we know the creation of physical reality begins on the energetic plane, and that our bodies and brains are the tools that shape and bring that energy into the world. As magicians and shamans, we practice keeping our personal energy coherent and strong. We know the importance of intent. So when we tap fully into the power of The Earth and modulate that power through our bodies and intent, we bring a Level of joyful energy to the creation of mass consensus reality that, over time
And with cooperation, cannot help but change the world we live in. But to do this well, we must be fully in our bodies, and to be fully in our bodies, we Must be not just able but willing to feel – both physical sensation and emotion -- in the face of a mass reality that in many, many ways encourages feelings of pain and despair. It can be hard to cope.

To dare to really feel, both physically and emotionally, is essential to Effective magic, as is the ability to relax and let the Universe work through you. Our bodies and our emotions are inextricably intertwined, one always Affecting the other. When we can let ourselves feel, relax, and bask in our sensual connection with the Earth, we are free, creative, and move through our lives with clear intent and a deep connection to Nature and Spirit. But sometimes, our crazy world can make it all too easy to shut down. We look at the news, or just around us, and see that while scientists are unraveling the secrets of life and the universe, we are still, apparently, unable to fathom that secret of our own soul, the open secret that love and joy are Divine gifts that are ours to claim on Earth. We are free to choose and to explore in this embodied life, our souls held safe in the eternity of the greater consciousness of Source – which is also "known by many other names"; The Cauldron of Cerridwen, the Tao, Nirvana, Brahma, Dryghten. The choices we make – each and every one, each and every day – shape our energy and make up the personal creation of a lifetime. This means that for a magician or shaman, allowing ourselves to keep our feelings shut down in a fearful, reactive response to the world around us is shirking our responsibility, our heritage and our birthright.

When we open to feeling, often what we feel first is pain, so courage is needed to pursue this path. In the face of our pain, our sense of joy and aliveness retreat. Stored in our bodies as well as our minds, pain – if we ignore and do not face it – restricts us. We carry the energetic imprint of pain in our auras, and fear of encountering more pain adds the imprint of fear to the energy that we are projecting as we move through our lives. Avoiding what we fear, we clamp down on our ability to feel, both physically and emotionally. And in doing so, we lock the ability to feel joy, aliveness and our connection with the Divine into our own, internal Pandora's Box.

We have the power to change this; we have a choice. Will we cringe before the pain we feel and see around us and try to hide from it? Or will we do the work to open to and be aware of our connection to the Divine within us, which will help us find the courage to change ourselves and our world? Without the only true safety – the internalized connection with the Source – we will fear too much to truly feel.

For many of us, healing enough to allow ourselves to feel fully is a long road, requiring considerable attention and fortitude. We face pain, anger, shame, guilt or other unpleasant emotions that are stored in our bodies, hearts and minds, and transform or release them. And then we do it again. And again. We go back and strip away more and more layers of the varnish that holds the imprint of pain in place, and each time we do this, we feel more and more free, connected and open. Sometimes this work can be hard and painful, but it can be eased and aided by working to remember what joy and love and beauty feel like. This is the gift that Beltane brings us – the Earth responds to the warmth of the Sun with the joyful gift of green and growing life, and that same energy can warm and heal the painful and constricted places within us.

Joy and love are our birthright. But in a free-will Universe, the world we see around us is a reflection of our mass choices. Every being on this planet contributes their energy to our mass creation. Most do this unconsciously. Those of us who have the skill and the knowledge to shape energy consciously have a responsibility to help re-pattern the dominant energies into life-affirming energies of growth, love, joy and abundance. By doing this we help awaken those who are in pain and asleep to the power of their will and intent. Little by little, we change the world. Working together, the change we create is unstoppable.

Currently, Uranus is making its way through the sign of Pisces, Neptune is in Aquarius, and the positions of these planets will support healing of painful and suppressed emotions during this year's Beltane season. Our ritual and magical practices can work with that energy – now is a good time to intentionally do the necessary work to identify our fears and pain, and let the fires of Beltane work their transformative magic.

Neptune is the planetary ruler of the sign of Pisces; both the planet and the sign are associated with feeling, spirituality, compassion, mysticism and sensitivity, and also with vagueness, self-sabotage, martyrdom, fear and delusion. Uranus is the ruler of Aquarius; both the planet and the sign are associated with freedom, sudden change, modernity, independence, and awakening and also with detachment, thoughtless behavior, violent revolution and fanaticism. With Neptune currently traveling through Uranus' sign of Aquarius, and Uranus now in Neptune's sign of Pisces, we have the planetary energies available to support awakening to sensitivity, to free our hearts, to help us blaze a spiritual trail of compassion and joy. These same energies can also support a delusional, self-sabotaging path of emotional detachment, thoughtlessness, and violent fanaticism. So we have a choice to make – what will we create with these energies?

As always, intent is the key. The holy day of Beltane is a reminder of an opportunity to set our intent and weave a spell of joy in our embodied life on Earth. Our joy is the greatest gift we can give our world, for it is our true nature, an incredibly powerful energy, and it opens the way to manifest a creative, peaceful and loving society for ourselves and our children. As we practice magic and perform our rituals this Beltane season, let us set an intent to open to feeling, and in doing so, begin to heal not only ourselves, but our world.

Beltane Bonfire Spell

Beltane Bonfire Spell
Source: Element Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells by Judika Illes

Beltane rituals are still held. Traditionally bonfires are lit. To heal infertility, people creep through bonfires, jump over them, and run between them. Once upon a time, they also made love amongst the bonfires, although to avail yourself of this power you may have to build private, personal fires.

Beltane Bonfire Spell 2

1) Build a pair of substantial fires.

2) Drive domestic animals between the fires for health, fertility and for maximum production and protection. Although this practice benefits all creatures, it is particularly beneficial for cattle. It's beneficial for people too: make sure you accompany those cows!
