I am so raw about the Caylee Anthony case because of a situation concerning my grandchildren. I know we (the mods and I) discourage using the list as a "Dr. Drew", but I need to talk about this.
My daughter and her husband divorced 3 years ago because of his heavy drug use. The had shared custody of their children Alex and Hailey. Alex, now 7, didn't want to be at his dad's because he was always taking pills, smoking crack, shooting up (yes, around the kids) and was either high or sleeping; didn't take care of the kids, didn't feed them, etc. Alex called both his mother and me begging one of us to come get him and his sister Hailey, now 4, but James would not hear of it. The court wouldn't do anything about it--would not give Amber full custody.
2 years ago, my daughter's boyfriend got laid off, and couldn't find work, necessitating moving to Georgia where was a job waiting for him. Her ex petitioned for full custody since Amber was moving out of state, and got it. Amber had lost Hannah at 20 weeks gestation, and was already close to a breakdown. During this time, her ex would rarely let her talk to the kids. She would go to Jacksonville to see them after making plans with her ex, and he wouldn't be at home, and she could never find him. A year ago, her ex called her and told her he couldn't handle having both kids, begging her to come get Hailey, and she couldn't have been happier. She kept begging her ex to let her have Alex, but he wouldn't. In March of this year, Amber received a phone call from her ex's sister, saying Alex had been left alone in the house for 4 days, and a neighbor had contacted her. Tammy (the sister) went and got Alex and called the police, after finding out that the ex was staying in a motel partying. The police went to the room, finding needles and heroin, and arrested him. Tammy, who has lupus, isn't physically capable of taking care of Alex, and asked Amber to come pick him up, which she did.
Well, James, the ex, contacted DCF (Department of Children and Families), and told them that Amber had kidnapped both children and taken them over state lines. DCF workers talked to Tammy, who told them that James had gone over the edge, telling them about many times that Alex had been dropped off at her house while James disappeared for days at a time, and was not fit to have them, and that she had called Amber to come get Alex.
In May, 4 police cars from Georgia and DCF workers from Jacksonville, FL pulled up in Amber and Tony's driveway, and took the children. They were put into foster care in Jacksonville by DCF, and were considering arresting Amber for kidnapping. Amber is allowed to visit them twice a month, and was let go from her job because of taking those Wednesday's off. Yesterday Amber received a letter from DCF saying a case had been opened against Hailey's foster mom (yes, they even separated the children) for abusing Hailey. Since this began, Amber's public defender nas not been in touch with her, while Amber has been leaving messages for her every day. When Amber tried to get some answers from the DCF worker yesterday, she was told "I can't really speak about that." What the eff? Hailey and Alex were removed from a loving mother's home and Hailey was ultimately was being beat by her foster parent?Amber is beside herself with worry. And their sperm donor is released from his cell every weekend for visits with the kids, who don't want to see him. What the eff?
That is why I have such a problem with "the system." Meanwhile, kids are being abused and neglected, and nothing is done, but the good parents are shoved under the bus. I just don't get it. I am so disenchanted and beaten down right now.

Amber needs to look for a lawyer preferably female that specializes in family law. Is there nothing like legal aid where you live? Here in Canada those with little or no income can often get better lawyers than people with decent income. If the DCF is anything like the Children's Aid Society she will have to go after them, have the lawyer threaten action because they are the direct cause of the abuse Hailey suffered.

Thank you, for sharing your problems and feeling. It sickens me to see that in
this day and age, children are suffering from adults neglects. You would think
that the system would be in place so no one would get hurt. Did anyone check if
the Department of Children and Families has a higher up? What I mean is, who are
they funded by? Is there any chance that this could be a political problem? I
see it being political if it's a States or Counties program. Where are the funds
coming from who is supporting these agencies? If someone ruffles someones
feathers, maybe there will be an investigation on the company. The company is
trying to do there best but sometimes it takes an outsider to fix things.
Sometimes companies forget on who, how, what, when and where things need to be
fixed or serviced. They do not realize that the suffering and neglect could be
caused because of them. I'm so sorry for all that you are going through. If the
people makes a lot of complaints, you could try looking into the legislation
area. I hope this helps and others will send in more inputs.

Guys...be very, very careful about giving herbal advice until/unless you're
absolutely certain of the herbs and their interactions with the human body
and with possible OTC and prescribed medications.
For joint swelling, I DO NOT recommend teas. The amount of herb needed to
ease the swelling often approaches toxic and if that swelling is due to
water retention or some other problem, it can often compound the issue.
If you're experiencing edema around the joints, I would recommend a few
practical alterations in your lifestyle:
- reduce your salt intake. This will mean reading labels, as table salt
isn't the only culprit and salt is an additive/preservative in many foods.
If it has a 'chloride' label on it or the word 'sodium' in it, those are
your clues to leave it alone (for instance, table salt is sodium chloride;
another common one, potassium chloride, is a potassium salt used as a
preservative and in some mineral supplements, multivitamins, and over the
counter cold remedies).
- Increase your joint movement. I know this one is difficult if they're
swollen and painful, but the increased circulation will often help carry
away excess fluid. Small stretching exercises, a bit of yoga (there are
many DVDs for the disabled and the bedridden which are helpful --- check
your local library or used sports equipment store!), or even a small walk
(just five minutes) can help. I found when I just sat in my wheelchair all
day, my legs and feet would swell to ridiculous proportions.
- Elevate the affected limbs. Two to three hours, or whenever you can
manage it, will reduce the swelling and the pain and the stress on the
joints. I use body pillows to block my joints into the positions they need
to be in (my knees, hips, and leg bones all are prone to both swelling and
dislocations, which complicates the swelling and the pain)
- Try either ice or heat on the joints. Sometimes one feels better,
sometimes the other.
If you haven't already, get checked out by your doctor. If you've got a
bone or joint disorder, early detection is your best bet for staying active
and out of a wheelchair. Make sure he checks vitamin D, vitamin B, iron,
and SED rate. A complete blood count wouldn't be a bad idea either. If
your joint problems are accompanied by metabolic problems such as weight
gain or weight loss, make sure he runs a metabolic panel too.
There's no shame in using prescribed medications if that's what it takes to
reduce the swelling and the pain. I started with OTC and alternative

when the others just stopped being effective and I was contemplating ending
my life because the pain and swelling were so bad. I now take Celebrex,
Lyrica, and Vicodin in a carefully managed combination to ensure that I'm
comfortable and as pain free as possible while still remaining active
(ignore the wheelchair --- it actually gave me back a lot of mobility I
didn't have otherwise, not to mention motivation to do things!)
Some supplements you can consider:
glucosamine - this is a proven joint helper; eases pain and swelling. Comes
in tablets or in a little toffee-like chew if you're not the pill type. The
pill can also be found in capsules which can be broken into a health drink,
your morning orange juice, or a dish of applesauce.
green tea - another mild natural analgesic with joint easing properties.
I prefer to drink mine, but you can get a standardized extract at most
stores in the pharmacy section
See if you can find a bath scent you like for a shower or bath gel which has
mint, eucalyptus, and/or citrus in it. The combination helps ease aches and
pains, even if you just bathe in it in the shower instead of soaking.
Also, consider wrapping the affected knees with an Ace wrap and investing in
a good pair of high topped shoes. These will lend added support and help
ease pain. In my case, they also compress swelling and help return the
edema-infused tissues to their normal state.

Thank you. :) I have gone to the Dr and I do have a water pill I take for
it, I was just wondering what supplements might be an alternative which
might help without the nasty side effect of having to go to the restroom
every few mins. Which as I'm sure you know can be quite difficult if you
have joint swelling and pain.

You may not know, but are joint problems ever associated with PCOS? This
whole health issue has been a nightmare. Doctor after doctor keep telling me
it's all in my head and directly related to my daddy issues (no lie) and
keep putting me on different anti-depressants, which was only making my
symptoms worse. Finally I had a doctor give me a diagnosis of PCOS and take
me off all the anti-depressants.

Thank you for the advice and the list. I still need to go back again to see
what they can do, but at the moment I lack the funds so I was looking for
some safe alternate methods to help ease it. You're always a great help and
I can relay the information is correct.

You should check with your Doctor. Sometimes swelling is caused by other
