Prayer Warriors Plan to Invade DC – By Patti Wigington
Here's an interesting story I've been hearing rumblings about lately. There's an evangelical Christian movement known as the New Apostolic Reformation, and they're pretty hardcore fundamentalists. Apparently they're planning on "laying siege" to Washington, DC, in what they call a "strategic prayer initiative." Their upcoming event, planned for this fall, is called DC40, and evidently includes sitting around DC for six weeks praying, causing a commotion, and ordering our country's lawmakers to change the name of the city to The District of Christ. ( More )

A Victory for Science and Logic in Texas -
We've frequently talked here on the Pagan/Wiccan blog about the state of Texas looking at some changes to public school social studies curriculum, which would have brought in an increased look at Christianity in reference to government, and added a lot of highly conservative viewpoints. You probably recall that they approved these changes, which is a pretty big deal, since Texas is one of the two states that buys the most textbooks, and so what they want in their curriculum has an impact on the rest of the country.

Lammas Countdown: The Final Sheaf -
For those readers who are preparing for Lammas, it's the middle of high summer right now. For you, Lammas is approaching, and that means the time of the first harvest. It's a time when grain is threshed and the fields are full of the earth's abundance.

LIFE Looks at Haitian Voodoo in Pictures -
Whenever there's something really amazing going on, you know someone from LIFE magazine is going to show up with a camera and create a set of stunning visuals that tell the story. Such is the case with this recent collection of images from a Haitian Vodou ceremony, photographed by Anthony Karen. Inside Haitian Vodou with LIFE - What is Vodou?

Lammas Countdown: Grapevine Pentacle -
This time of year, the grapevines are in abundance! This is a craft which is fairly easy to make, although it takes a little bit of patience.

Stone Age Erotica Found in German Caves -
Yeah, I know, it was as weird for me to type that as it was for you to read it, I'm sure. Anyway, researchers in Germany have discovered Stone Age cave art that includes images of nude women, and it's possible they were used in fertility rituals. Archaeologists found the engravings in a cave near Bamberg, in the southern part of the country.

A Call For Prayers & Energy -
We've got a number of About Pagan/Wiccan readers who live in Norway, including a couple in Oslo, and several more who have have family and friends in the area. Please, everyone, send out some prayers and healing energy to all of those in need right now.

The Young Witches of Salem -

What does it mean for Bay Area Pagans that a new reality show about young witches is being filmed in Salem, MA? Maybe not much, but how will a show like this reflect the larger Pagan community? Many Pagans are pretty skeptical, like Rowan Pendragon from Salem.

Can a Pagan be a Conservative?

After reading my first Patheos blog, some folks reminded me that some Pagans are conservatives and asked me to address this issue.

Since so many members of the Pagan community work as solitaries, and may never come into contact with other Pagans during their lifetime, one issue that comes up as our population ages is that of what to do with magical tools and other items after death.

Why Are Kids Sometimes Not Welcome at Pagan Events?
By Patti Wigington

Question: Why Are Kids Sometimes Not Welcome at Pagan Events? I was recently planning to attend a big Pagan event, and my husband and I were very excited about going. However, when we asked what sort of kids' activities would be available for our two children, we were told it was an "adults only" gathering! I'm extremely upset about this, because I think it's unfair to people with kids. How are we supposed to teach our children about our spiritual path if we can't even bring them to events where there are other Pagans? Answer: While I understand your frustration to some degree, there are a couple of different issues at play here. First of all, you need to realize that when a public event is held, it's only because a group of volunteers has taken the time to put it together. Chances are good that the folks who are in charge of it have looked at all the options, and that there's a reason that it's adults only. There are a number of possibilities:

Harry Potter as an Avenue of Magickal Awareness?
By Athmey M. Richter

Over the past week, millions of Potter fans bravely bid farewell to the final film of one of the most-record breaking franchises ever created. The new greatest story ever told, the legend of Harry Potter touched the world: defying age-barriers, nationalities, and religious conventions (Beach & Wilner 2002; Black 2003; Radigan 2001). It encouraged generations of children believed lost to the digital age to pick up books and read again. It encouraged them to use their imagination and believe in something more than the mundane. And most importantly in the context of this discussion, it challenged the world's preconception of magick and magickal societies: evoking an unprecedented era of awareness and tolerance for occult paths. You may not have even realized that such a quiet revolution occurred, or even how extremely significant it is from an anthropological perspective. Yes, the past century has been a springboard for magickal faiths to take root, but never have magickal communities been as mainstream as they are at the moment. Numerous other supernatural pop culture venues from the classics like So I Married a Witch, Bewitched, and Bell Book and Candle to the more recent Charmed, laid significant groundwork for magickal tolerance. But it was Harry Potter who dashed boldly down the path they had laid out, entertainingly making the masses positively aware of the magickal cultures which have hitherto fore had to lurk in the shadows of typical every day society.

DailyOM - The Importance of Napping
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

Restorative Slumber
The Importance of Napping
A short nap during the afternoon is common in many countries and can provide an energy boost and clearer senses.

As we focus on the many obligations we gladly undertake in order to create the lives we want, sleep is often the first activity that we sacrifice. We're compelled by both external and internal pressures to be productive during many of our waking hours. While this can lead to great feats of accomplishment, it also disrupts the body's natural cycles and leaves us craving rest. Napping represents a pleasurable remedy to this widespread sleep deprivation. Though judged by many as a pastime of little children or the lazy, the need for a nap is a trait that all mammals share and an acceptable part of the day in many countries. It is also a free and effortless way to improve our health and lift our spirits. A nap is relaxing and can improve our mood, vision, reflexes, and memory.

Lack of sleep, whether ongoing or the result of a single night's wakefulness, puts stress on the body and mind. It can negatively impact your physical and mental health. At one time, napping was considered a natural part of life. In the past hundred years, however, electricity and modern conveniences have provided us with more time to engage in personal and professional activities. Consequently there is now less time for sleep. A mere ten minutes of sleep in the middle of the day can leave you feeling more cheerful and alert. A half-hour long nap can sharpen your senses and refresh your energy reserves, and a shorter nap can even sustain you through a long day. Napping can help you make up for lost sleep and serves as a supplement to your usual sleep schedule. You may need to give yourself permission to nap by making naptime a part of your day.

Feelings of guilt about napping or being preoccupied with other activities can keep you awake when you are trying to take a nap. If you need help, surround yourself with soft pillows and blankets or soothing music. Try to take a nap at the same time each day and use an alarm clock to ensure that you don't fall into too deep a sleep. Learning to nap and enjoying its benefits can help you reclaim your natural right to nap. You nourish your being every time you take a nap.

What's Happening Today:

Greater Panatheneae - This Athenian festival, the most important of the year, was celebrated every fifth year on the last day of the first month of the year, in the brilliant heat and light of summer. It was a time for excess and the display of the new peplos or veil, woven for Athena out of white wool and gold threads, which was so large it was used as a sail on one of the boats in her procession.

St Pantaleon - I had to include this holiday out of affection for the daimon, Panteleon, in the wonderful trilogy by Phillip Pullman, which begins with The Golden Compass. St Panteleon (whose name means all-compassionate) was supposedly the personal physician of the emperor Maximiam. He is a patron of doctors and midwives. Blackburn, Bonnie & Leofranc Holford-Strevens, The Oxford Companion to the Year, Oxford University Press 1999

Seven Sleepers - According to myth, seven Christian youths of Ephesus hid in a cave to avoid the Decian persecution (250), were walled up by the emperor, fell asleep and woke up nearly 200 years later whereupon they testified to the resurrection of the dead and fell back asleep. Whenever they turn over, bad luck follows. I've never seen any details about how to celebrate this holiday but the title is suggestive. Sleep all day? Goddess For Today:  Nuvak'chin'Mana

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Jul 26, 2011 9:01 pm (PDT)

Goddess For Today:  Nuvak'chin'Mana
Hopi Kachina Dances
(Southwestern United States)

Themes:  Ghosts (Spirits); Blessings; Weather; Winter
Symbols:  Cold Items; White; Moisture

About Nuvak'chin'Mana:  This Goddess's name means Snow Maiden.  In the Niman festival, Nuvak'chin'Mana is a Kachina who appears to pray for the return of cold weather so the moisture in the earth gets replenished.  In our lives, she comes to replenish the well of our spirits and cool any overheated tempers that erupt with summer's heat.

To Do Today: In Hopi tradition, Kachinas are spirits that help the tribe in all matters of life.  Each year the Kachinas emerge around February to remind people of their blessings and to teach the sacred rituals that bring rain.  Around this time of year, the Kachinas return to their rest, escorted out of the human realms by the Niman ritual.

To bring Nuvak'chin'Mana's coolheadedness and refreshing energy to your entire day, drink a glass of milk on the rocks at breakfast, lunch, and dinner (or anytime in between).  It's very refreshing, and the appearance of the beverage honors the Goddess.  If your region has been suffering from a dry spell, pour out a little of the milk and ice on the ground as an offering to Nuvak'chin'Mana so she might carry your need for rain to the nature spirits.

Last, take a moment at some point during the day to thank the Powers for all your blessings.  A grateful heart is one ready to give and receive more of the Goddess!

Tue Jul 26, 2011 9:02 pm (PDT)

Basil Security Spell

Basil is not just for cooking! Use it today for protection everywhere you may venture. Pour some basil into a glass or stoneware bowl. Holding your hands open over the bowl, visualize the protective energies of the plant surrounding you as you chant:

Spirit of this plant I pray,
Keep me safe throughout this day.
Bless me with security.
Protected, I feel safe and free.

Sprinkle a small amount of basil in each room of your house, visualizing the energy changing as the protective properties of the plant spread. Place a bit of basil in your purse or pocket for protection all day. Leaving some basil in your car will protect it both on the road and in the parking lot.

My friend, don't even ask. Don't ask the fortuneteller
or the harupice to tell you how long you have to live.
Don't ask about me, either. Better not to know.
Better just to take each day as it is given to us,
it makes no difference if there are many more to follow,
or if this is the last year we will see the ocean
throw itself against the nearby cliffs. Be sensible:
drink a little wine; do not look too far ahead.
Even as we talk, time is running past.
Reap the harvest of today, and let it be enough.
~Horace

The great pagan poet Horace is known for his attitude of carpe diem, or "seize the day," of which the ode above is a fine representative. His words are as fresh today as they were almost two thousand years ago. Tarot readers and psychics today still face clients who want their fate spelled out. But what good does it do to know the exact time you will die? There is still today, to be lived as fully as possible. There is still the sun, rising in rainbow splendor or setting in a blaze of glory. There is the world and our loved ones; there is our work and our pleasures. Knowing when it will end does not change the fact of today's gifts to us. As the poet recommends, let us live today as fully as we can, and even if it is the last we see, we will have truly lived.

Recipes for Lammas, stop in and share

Get Ready for Lammas!

Day 7: Your Lammas Celebration
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism / Wicca
When Lammas arrives, chances are good you're celebrating outside, if you can stand the heat of summer. Take advantage of the blooming gardens, and celebrate with some recipes that honor the themes of the season. Pick some basil for a fresh pesto sauce, roast some garlic corn for a bit of heat, or bake your own loaf of bread for your Lammas rituals!

Lammas Cooking
Make a Loaf of Lammas Bread

Lammas is all about the harvest, and what better way to celebrate than with a fresh loaf of ritual bread? After all, the word Lammas comes from "loaf mass", so bake this easy bread-man, and use him in rituals to honor the god of the grain. You can use this loaf as part of a Bread Sacrifice Ritual as well... Bake a Loaf of Lammas Bread

Fresh Basil Pesto

Basil represents protection and love, so why not whip up a batch of magical pesto? Harvest fresh basil from your garden, add a bit of oil, and serve it over pasta -- or just eat it with a spoon! Basil Pesto

Roasted Garlic Corn
