It looks as if it was a beautiful wedding.
Tim and Miranda look so in love.
This storm was a terrible way to start their marriage. May there be only goodness for them from this day on.............

My group simply chose not to participate in this atrocity and went, for lack of a better word, underground. While there is still a large Pagan community in Jax, and my group does take part in an event from time to time, we remain autonomous. Only 1 group that I am aware of "does it all": holds the public rituals, the monthly Esbats, the Sabbats, etc. I know some of the people in this particular group, but I detest politics and refuse to participate in the "my group is better than your group," "or "you aren't doing it correctly," et. al. I am content being out of the public eye and the Pagan political debacle.

I'm sorry and pretty shocked to hear these nightmares have happened in the pagan world... I have been a Solitary practitioner for over 14 years, I do try to keep up to date on what happens to the pagan world in public view ,but I have to say I missed something big here, It's pretty unbelievable. I had no idea that there was such hate and uprising amongst us... how truly heartbreaking...This is one of the first group I have joined in a while, and I was actually considering trying to find a Coven group, this leaves me with apprehension as to weather or not any covens would give a warm welcome to anyone they have not trained from scratch themselves and dose not believe and hold to the beliefs of the group word for word... I hope this dose not mean that Witches will forever now be divided amongst each other , prejudice dose not go along with Perfect love and perfect trust.

Bright Blessings,

Michelle

I believe that in the smaller cities, as opposed to ones as large as Jacksonville, the tension and fighting is not as prevalent. When I was living in Baldwin, a small town on the outskirts of Jax, a smaller group formed with my coven as the teaching coven. The people couldn't have been nicer, and from time to time, we get together to celebrate. There are lots of good covens, and if there are any in your area, don't give up on them. Some of them, like ours, are very eclectic and our members come from various backgrounds and traditions. We have always worked well together and rarely have any issues to address. I'm a really laid-back Witch, and only get mean when I absolutely have to.

Aromatherapy Tip

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

If you like the smell of Lavender, make an antibacterial spray by mixing
about 20 drops of pure essential oil of Lavender to 1 cup of water in a
spray bottle. Shake to blend. Spray on the cutting board and don't rinse.

Plain Old Soap and Water:

The Environmental Protection Agency notes that soap and hot water kill
bacteria. Wash the cutting board with soap and water (note: use real liquid
soap, such as Dr. Bronner's); it is effective to do this using a good scrub
brush, to get into all the nooks and crannies.
Hydrogen peroxide and white distilled vinegar:
Wash your board with hydrogen peroxide followed by straight white distilled
vinegar. Leaving each one to rest on the cutting board for 10 minutes or so
before rinsing. (The smell of the vinegar will dissipate.)
A straight 5 percent solution of vinegar-such as you can buy in the
supermarket-kills 99 percent of bacteria, 82 percent of mold, and 80 percent
of germs (viruses).

Elder's Meditation of the Day

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"We must all become caretakers of the Earth."

-- -- Haida Gwaii Traditional Circle of Elders

Mother Earth is the source of all life. We should not only be concerned about the part of the Earth we live on, but we should be concerned about the parts of the Earth that other people live on. The Earth is one great whole. The trees in Brazil generate the air in the United States. If the trees are cut in Brazil, it affects the air that all people breathe. Every person needs to conscientiously think about how they respect the Earth. Do we dump our garbage out of the car? Do we poison the water? Do we poison the air? Am I taking on the responsibility of being a caretaker of the Earth?

Great Spirit, today, I will be aware of the Earth. I will be responsible.

Mystic Roots

Mystic Roots

Earth magic is familiarly associated with prosperity, abundance, stability, patience, and endurance. The mysticism and magic of the Deep earth--the realm of invisible underground roots and chthonic underworld gods--is less familiar. Roots are used as a metaphor for invisible, pre-existing human structures. People have family roots, spiritual roots, and karmic roots. The calm silence of the Deep Earth is a gentle and supportive source of aid and renewal, as well as an invaluable part of a magical palette.

The esoteric and mythological concepts surrounding death, the underworld, and the afterlife are also amazingly consistent in diverse pantheons across the globe. Gods or goddesses traveling to the underworld are a metaphor for the seasons and an explanation for winter's fallow period. These tales were generated as lifestyles centered on farming and domesticated livestock replaced migratory hunting and gathering. the gods and stories from this transition are thought to be between five and ten thousand years old.

Myths are poetic and dramatic narratives that often animate common sense and survival skills. On the surface, underworld stories seem to involve grieving and a keen sense of loss. Yet good farmers know that the soil must rest between growing seasons. Winter rain and snow soften the soil for spring planting. Ancient farming peoples needed gods who were willing to offer their bodies to revitalize the invisible roots of plants that fed humans and animals during the growing season.

Journeys to the underworld represent a process of restoration. the body of the submerged god or goddess is a battery that recharges the soil and roots. Various underworlds are depicted as vast, invisible complexes intertwined with life on Earth. Plant roots are anchors, nutrition-gathering and -storage systems, and the underworld provided much the same function for human life in a metaphysical context. For instance, Blavatsky's Theosophical system, the Akashic Records form a karmic root system that connects past, present, and future and acts as a storehouse of regards, debts, and soul patterns.

Underworld Gods

The extremely ancient god Osiris actually pre-dates Egyptian civilization, and his name means "the hidden one." This god was once a great king who taught his people how to sow seeds and harvest the riches of the soil After his earthly life, Osiris became an earth god associated with corn, trees, and fertile soil. In later centuries, he transmogrified into the ruler of the Egyptian underworld, Duat. Then as now, the Moon was considered quite magical, and Osiris' legend includes his body being torn into pieces and made whole again. As plant growth often coincides with lunar cycles, Osiris was affiliated with the Moon in his earliest role.

The history of the Greek god Cronus (the Roman god Saturn) contains many similar elements. Cronus is a very, very old god, and the earliest statues of him date to 7000BCE. He was once a living king who taught agricultural techniques. Like Osiris, Cronus became an earth god associated with the harvest and then relocated (willingly or forcibly, depending on the source) to the edge of Tartarus, the Greek underworld. Cronus' son Pluto (a.k.a. Hades) is the lord of the underworld, but his first identity was Ploutos (Roman Plutus), the son of Demeter and her demigod consort, Iasion. Ploutos is the god at the roots of the Earth and he is associated with wealth.

The most familiar myth of underworld journeying is that of Demeter and Persephone. After her daughter was abducted by Hades, Demeter blanketed the world with cold and refused to allow anything to grow until her daughter's return. Winter is Demeter's revenge. Persephone is an embodiment of feminine life-giving energies. While her presence is needed above the Earth during the growing months, her visit to the underworld in the winter is purposeful. To early peoples, spring "rose" from the Earth, so she needed to be beneath it to make her big entrance on the Earth's stage at the Spring Equinox.

Persephone's tale echoes that of Inanna, the Sumerian goddess who endures a similar journey to the underworld. She offered her consort to the underworld demons and he remained as their king. In later Orphic revisions, this god (called Zagreus, Sabazios, or Dionysus) return to life in the spring.

Yule lore features underworld journeys made by the Sun or the Holly King. In Nordic lore, this journey is made by the gentle sun god Balder. These figures travel to the dark realm so that the life-giving energy of the Sun can be reborn. As may be expected with the more explosive drama associated with male deities, fierce battles ensue to ensure their return. Male deities enact the return of the Sun, while female deities enact the renewal of Earth's fertility. Both roles are important since the fight for life occurs both on the Earth and in the sky.

The Fates

The Fates are consistently associated with the life-and-death axis, which is sometimes called the World Pillar, the World Tree, or the Spindle of Necessity. In Nordic myth, the Norns are stationed at the roots of the World Tree, Yggdrasil. It is their job to water Yggdrasil to keep it healthy and growing, since an evil dragon is constantly chewing at its roots. The Norns were said to weave forms of life from east to west, and sometimes appeared as swans or mermaids to give mortals advice or to foretell the future. The Norn's weaving was done blindly according to Orlog, the external laws of the universe that determined turns of fate (much like kismet, karma, or fate). Orlog was an older power than the Norns and was applied to group destiny as much as personal fate. the well-being of the group was essential to survival, and a person who carried bad fate could spoil the group's luck.

The Greeks had a similar notion: The Fates, or Moirae, were placed atop the Spindle of Necessity to spin, weave, and cut the threads of life. Necessity, personified as the goddess Ananke, joined with Kronos (Time) to give birth to Aether, Chaos, Erebos (Darkness), and Meimarmene (Fate or Destiny). Fate is created through Necessity and Time. Yet like the Norns, Necessity and Time were older and more powerful forces that dictated the spinning of the threads of life.

The Fates are entwined with birth and death, so they are generally placed near the entrance or exit of souls in cosmological architectures. In the late classical period, Prothyraia was the goddess of the doorway, the portal between life and death. Orphic rituals use this name as a designation for either Artemis or Hecate. Selket and Amentet are portal guardians in Egyptian lore.

Location, Location, Location

Osiris was provided with a ladder, the Djed, to climb into the underworld in the vast darkness of the night sky. As the outermost visible planet, Saturn mediates the portal between life and death. In Platonic and Hermetic thought, human souls are created in the cosmos and made of the same stuff as the stars. When a soul is incarnated, it becomes entwined with Anima Mundi, the world Soul. After death, illuminated souls return to the cosmos. Developing souls return to new bodies for further learning and improvement.

In Hermetic thought, the cosmos was regarded as a massive recycling system. Souls originate from the maker of the cosmos, the "origin and root of all." Immortal souls are placed in mortal bodies, giving mankind a dual nature. the Great Creator exists in eternity and created the cosmos, which functions with strict order and creates Time. Time is change, and is the source of generation, the cycles of life and death on Earth. the earth gives birth to chancing forms, which are dissolved and renewed. In the Corpus Hermeticum, Hermes Trismegistus writes" ....for life is not birth, but perception; death is not change, but forgetting." This means that knowledge of the soul cannot be taught, but can be remembered.

The path of the dead and the underworld are associated with specific locations in the sky. At Midsummer and Yule, the Earth and Sun are aligned with the "root" of the galaxy, the Galactic Center, an invisible star nursery. The solstices are soul portals. The solstices link the ends of the Milky Way along thepath of the dead. the two cosmic bears, Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, ircle with the North Star, Polaris, around the to of the World Axis, while the ship Argo's rudder, the star Canopus, marks the bottom of the axis. WHile the soul portals are north and south, death is sometimes associated with the Sun setting in the west.

Other sabbats are associated with death and the underworld, particularly Samhain. the Fates may be evoked at Imbolc for divination. Memorials to the dead are offered at Lammas. Deep earth and root-working magic can be included in any of these sabbats.

Deep Earth Rituals

Ancient Earth-renewing rituals often took place in caves or underground sanctuaries and featured symbolic enactments of seeding, growth, death, and rebirth, as well as blood mysteries. The entrance of an underground sanctuary symbolized the shift from light into darkness and required consent from the guardian of the portal. Although a child exiting the womb goes from dark into light, the soul entering the body goes from light into darkness, losing its fiery etheric form as it is cloaked within the body.

Underworld deities and the Fates have great symbolic consistency. Goddesses of fate are invariably depicted with needles, spindles, mirrors, rudders, globes, or wheels. Goddesses who journey to the underworld have pomegranates and are associated with frogs, snakes, and lizards. Underworld gods are associated with trees: pine trees, sycamores, tamarisks, cypresses, and willows. The pine is a common tribute. Ladders or stairways serve to connect the Earth with the underworld. Libations to underworld gods are poured with the left hand. Oaths are witnessed by underworld gods when the oath-taker stomps on the ground three times with the left foot.

Magical rituals that involve Deep earth and/or the underworld can focus on several areas: to get to the root of old problems, to heal difficult karma from past lives, to petition for aid or strength from dead relatives or ancestors, or to gain justice in disputed wills and estates.

The underworld is invisible, dark, and mysterious, so silence and darkness are critical components necessary for performing Deep Earth magic. Prepare a votive candle in a glass holder and submerge it in soil placed in a larger glass jar. This symbolizes taking a light into this dark realm.

Rituals should begin with evoking a gatekeeper deity before directly contacting the underworld. Set the stage by moving from light into darkness; extinguish all light except the candle submerged in soil. Once the connection has been made, ask for the needed aid, or express desires for healing, cleansing, justice, rejuvenation, or karmic remediation. In ancient Greek thought, the dead needed food to reawaken. Dig a hole in the ground and offer milk, honey, wine, bread, or blood. If the ritual includes a petition, place it in the soil after the offerings have been made. Complete the process by pushing the soil back into the hole. The final step is to acknowledge the gatekeeper when returning to the light.

Gemstones and semiprecious stones are found in the earth, and can be worn or carried as protective amulets. Bury the amulet in a jar or bowl filled with soil. Sprinkle the surface of the soil with appropriate root powders or herbs and charge it beneath the Moon or night sky. Magical roots, which are generally used in powdered form, include mandrake, lotus, goldenseal, comfrey, galangal, ginger, and ginseng roots. An underworld-charged amulet serves as a reminder of the presence of deceased relatives or mentors as a source of aid and protection, and offers a tool for invoking these connections when needed.

Place a crystal at the roots of an herb, flower, or tree when it is planted. When these herbs are harvested, they can be used in rituals. Make a tea of these herbs or burn it as incense to enhance the connection to the underworld realm.

Create an underworld "telephone" connection to get advice from a deceased loved one or mentor. Tie crystals to both ends of a string. Bury one crystal, and leave the other above the ground. Concentrate on a photograph or mental image of this person before sleeping, and request aid or advice through the medium of dreams. remove the crystals from the soil when the answer has been received.

Since the underworld is associated with darkness, perform underworld rituals during the fourth-quarter Moon phase (waning Moon). Hecate is associated with earth, sea, and sky, but she also has significant lunar and underworld powers. Her chthonic, nocturnal, ghostly aspect is Antaia ("she who encounters you"); as goddess of crossroads, she is called Enodia or Trioditis (having three heads or bodies). Hecate and Artemis are both associated with black dogs. Bury dog hair with a crystal, petition, or food offerings, or fashion a small dog of clay to include with buried offerings.

Underworld Cuisine

Root vegetables are welcome additions to winter sabbats. These organic sources of energy-sustaining carbohydrates help the body ward off cold. Create your own version of Persephone Potatoes, Yama Yams, Tellus Turnips, or Belili Beets as a way of honoring the underworld gods and acknowledging the wealth found in their realm.

Ginger and ginseng are both useful, health-sustaining roots. Ginseng roots mimic the shape of a human, and the Chinese believe this root contains the powers of the Great Spirit. Ginseng is credited with sustaining good health and longevity. Ginger can be used as both a flavoring and as a tea. Keep ginger tea around in case anyone gets a stomach ache, as ginger settles the belly (especially those troubled from overindulging in feasts!). Ginger tea is also a gentle remedy for babies with colic. Use lotus or arrowroot in place of corn starch as a thickening agent.

As the health of the roots determines a plant's ability to flourish and flower, the health of one's personal roots is the key to sustaining a productive life that is well-grounded in the past and present, and prepared for the future. The nurturing and feeding of one's spiritual roots ensures that these invisible sources of life are revitalized and eager for fruition and fertility. Consider doing a root-healing ceremony during a personal fallow period to ensure that vibrant growth will follow.
