Georgia Rep Disses Tornado Victims

DISCLAIMER: This post is informational only, not for political discussion..

By Patti Wigington, About.com Guide May 11, 2011

From the So Insensitive You Can't Believe He Went There files, Georgia Representative Bobby Franklin commented last week that all those folks who were victims of the recent tornado damage were "praying to their god, FEMA," and it saddened his heart. Just in case you're not sure who Franklin is, he's the guy who suggested last year that women might need to face criminal charges after a miscarriage, and he would like people who are raped to be described as "accusers" rather than victims.

Franklin is part of the ever-expanding Christian Reconstructionist movement, and if you're not aware of who these folks are, you should be. Religion Dispatches Julie Ingersoll describes the Reconstructionist worldview as follows: In this view, God has ordained three distinctly different spheres of authority (three different governments) with delineated responsibilities: the family, the church, and the civil government. When one of these institutions intrudes on the authority of another it is considered tyranny. When a person relies on the sphere of government to do things that God has not assigned to it, he or she is seeking salvation from it rather than submitting to God's design.

The Georgia Politico calls Franklin out for his FEMA comment, saying, "Representative Franklin's remarks are not only offensive to the people who are working hard to help people put their lives back together, but also his fellow Christians across the south who have had their houses blown away and are accepting help from their fellow Americans. I wonder what Representative Franklin is doing to help?"

Meanwhile, something to consider is this. If you're a voter, is that the sort of person you want making legislative decisions on your behalf?

Opening Prayer Restricted to Monotheists Only
By Patti Wigington, About.com Guide May 14, 2011

Here's an interesting twist in the whole "should we have a prayer before meetings or not" dilemma. Some municipalities choose to eliminate prayers altogether, opting instead for a moment of silence, in which participants can pray of they choose, or just figure out what they need from the grocery store on the way home. Others go for the crazy notion of treating everyone as equally welcome, and allow representatives from a variety of religions to deliver opening prayers.

Now, in Maryland, the Frederick County Commissioners have adopted a new interpretation of this, when board members voted 3-to-2 to "invite religious leaders to attend their meetings to invoke "divine guidance" for the commissioners and their deliberations." Here's the catch. The ministers must be "ordained and affiliated with a monotheistic religion with an established congregation in Frederick County. Their prayers must avoid referring to any particular religion, denomination or sect."

So, while the new policy prohibits the invoking of a specific deity, it also makes it very clear that anyone who is a polytheist is out of luck. In addition to being a "Wiccan-proof" policy, it also excludes pretty much any Pagan religion that honors multiple deities, or that does not have an "established congregation."

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.

DailyOM: Exploring the Soul

Exploring the Soul
Living a Spiritual Life

Remembering who we really are is the first step in awakening to our spiritual path.

Throughout the journey from birth to death, many people choose to question life, strive for improvement, seek out knowledge, and search for the divine. Simply put, this is the essence of spirituality. One's spiritual practice can take on many forms, because embracing the spiritual is a very personal pursuit. While many people do relate their spirituality to a God or Goddess, this quest for the divine, or oneness with the universe, always springs from within. It doesn't matter where you find your spiritual path. We are all fundamentally spiritual beings and the essence of that lies in knowing one's true self and finding a peace that comes from within rather than the outside world. It is in remembering this that we awaken to our personal path.

The spiritual path springs forth from a daily routine that reaffirms our personal connection with a purpose or a way of life. Practicing compassion, gratitude, appreciation, forgiveness, generosity, meditation, and taking care of one's wellbeing can all be a part of one's spiritual life. If you are new to exploring your personal spirituality, remember that this is a process. You may want to spend a few moments each day giving yourself a spiritual gift. Try a new form of meditation, visit a sanctuary, or explore a specific deity.

Accepting the importance of spirituality can be a healthy decision, because a spiritual practice tends to include habits that promote healthy living. Take the time to carefully determine the action, thought, and ritual that most speaks to your soul. Remember that your most profound spiritual experiences may also come from the simple intricacies that make up your life. See the interconnectedness of all things. As you explore your "inner work," you will be walking your spiritual path and feeling your oneness with the universe.

Thanks for this article. Although I believe that life is a gift and should be cherished, I like to believe in an afterlife as well. Personally, I think it's a good idea for us to live this life like it's the only one we'll ever get so we are certain to make the best of it. That's just my feelings on the subject. Thanks again for posting.

Hawkshill

OH MY, LET ME THINK,
W hen my kids were small I let them choose their own path, but still had
them involved in my short rituals and answered their questions , out of
my 4 kids just one has chosen the same beliefs as me the others chose a
Christian faith, but have a good and positive understanding of mine, so my
topic is how do you feel about kids that may choose a different path to yours?

Pam.

When my kids were growing up, they took part in many of my rituals and celebrations. Parents of most religions bring up their children in their particular one, and I did also. They had several friends who shared our path, but most did not. Their friends always enjoyed being at our house because "this is so cool, your Mom is a Witch." Sadly, their parents didn't agree, and forbade any contact. I encouraged my children to learn about and take part in other faiths' activities, which they did. Some of them went to church from time to time. Scarlette told me at Miranda's wedding that she went to vacation bible school for the snacks. I just had to laugh about that one.

Scarlette was always the one who couldn't absorb enough about Witchcraft, and she says she is "the chosen one" in our family, LOL! Her husband is Christian, and she is teaching their children about both beliefs. Amber is also Pagan and is raising her children that way. Amber's husband is agnostic. Her son Alex told me a few nights ago that he wanted a necklace "just like Mom's" (he always heard my kids calling me mom, so he started calling me Mom. His mom is Mommy). I asked him if he knew what the pentacle meant, and he rolled his eyes at me and said "Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit, you already know that." So we are going shopping for one for him. Tiffany (whose middle birth name is Rhiannon) is Pagan/Christian; her husband is Christian and their children are Christian.. Aimee calls herself a "lazy Pagan" and her husband is Christian. Their children are Christian. Miranda loves nature, but says she just doesn't subscribe to the politics of organized religion. Her hubby is much the same. Rhaynee is a "dabbler," still trying to find herself at age 19. Travis was Pagan, but turned to Christianity, at her urging, when he met his Christian wife. Now we hardly ever speak. I wasn't even invited to their wedding. And that really hurt me.

I would have preferred them all to follow my path, but I encouraged them to follow their own. Every one of them except my son has always defended my Witchiness.

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.

Love Each Day,
Lady Nightshayde

I feel we should all have the freedom to choose our own path. When kids are young I believe they should be given access to learning about many different religions/paths and allowed to make their own choice and be accepted and honored for whatever they choose.

Spirituality by definition is very personal, so I have always taught that it matters not what path you choose, as long as you choose one. Divine doesn't care about the religious part of any path, what matters is building a relationship with God/Goddess or whatever you feel comfortable calling him/her.

My kids are all adults, but they are ok with me being a witch. The only one that even goes to church has now become a Baptist and is really into religion..his wife even moreso. They haven't said anything to me..and the Goddess might become really upset if they do.

My sons are grown and one seems to have taken umbrage at my being a witch. His
brother on the other hand is a Pagan seer/channeler. Welcome to my world.
Meanwhile back at the cauldron...the youngest child of my olders son has been
calling birds of prey since she was an hour old.
