Today's Goddess: - Macha  Bonfire Night (Scotland)

Today's Goddess: - Macha
Bonfire Night (Scotland)

Themes: Victory; Success; Protection; Fertility; Fire
Symbols: Red Items; Acorn; Crow

About Macha: Macha means "mighty one". Macha used her potency to clear the
land for wheat, giving her associations with fertility. She also used her might
to protect the Celts' lands against invaders, thereby becoming a war goddess and
guardian. Art shows her dressed in red (a color abhorrent to evil) and with
blazing red hair, forever chasing off any malevolence that threatens her
children's success.

To Do Today: Taking place around this date, this festival originally had strong
pagan overtones, the fires being lit specifically for ritual offerings that
pleased the gods and goddesses and invoked their blessing. Additionally, the
bright, red fire looked much like Macha's streaming hair, and thus it banished
any evil spirits from the earth. So don any red-colored clothing today, or
maybe temporarily dye your hair red to commemorate this Goddess and draw her
protective energies to your side. Eating red foods (like red peppers) is
another alternative for internalizing Macha's victorious power and overcoming
any obstacle standing in your way.

Or, find some acorns and keep them in a Macha fetish bag (any natural-fiber
drawstring bag). Anytime you want her power to manifest, simply plant the acorn
and express your wish to it. Macha's potential is in that acorn, ready to
sprout!

Lakota Holy Man Wallace Black Elk, on Women's Initiation Rites

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Sat May 21, 2011 9:05 pm (PDT)

She should realize that the change which has taken place
in her is sacred, for now she will be as Mother Earth, able
to bear children which should be brought up in a sacred
manner. She should know that each month when her
blood arrives she bears influence.
~Lakota Holy Man Wallace Black Elk, on Women's Initiation Rites

Today, a woman's first menstruation often passes unmarked, although most other
cultures have recognized the depth of this change in a woman's life. The
sacredness of menstrual blood was recognized by most traditional societies;
women during their moontime were believed to have great power. And nothing was
so powerful as a woman's first blood flow. What once was cause for celebration -
that a new woman could now bring new life to her people - is today something
hidden, perhaps even shameful.

Finding a way to reclaim menses from the negativity shrouding it is a difficult
and challenging task. But as long as women shirk from reclaiming the power that
participation in the great universal cycles once brought us, we will not be
fully empowered as women within our families and our society.

Hello, all! As I recently mentioned, MOST Saturdays I'm going to be selling at
the Maple Shade Farmer's Market. I don't think tomorrow will be one of them,
since it's supposed to rain, and my husband and I have both had complaining
stomachs this evening. But next week, come see me if you can! It's on Main
Street in the park, and runs from 8:30 to 12:30. As I said before, I won't have
all my usual
items, since it's not a Goth or Pagan focused event.

But what I WILL have are soaps, scrubs and more from Dreaming Tree Soapworks,
incense, my more normal friendly jewelry and t-shirts, assorted crafts and what
have you. And if anyone
wants anything in particular that I usually carry, just give me a heads up and
I'll bring it! Hope to see some of you there!
