Hidden Treasure
Finding Another Vantage Point

Seeing the world from another perspective can introduce you to all sorts of hidden treasures.

The ocean can look very different, depending on whether you are standing at the shore, soaring above in a plane, or swimming beneath its waves. Likewise, a mountain can look very different relative to where you are standing. Each living thing sees the world from its unique vantage point. While from your window you may be seeing what looks like a huge shrub, a bird in its nest is getting an intimate view of that tree's leafy interior. Meanwhile, a beetle sees only a massive and never-ending tree trunk. Yet all three of you are looking at the same tree.

Just as a shadow that is concealed from one point of view is easily seen from another, it is possible to miss a fantastic view. That is, unless you are willing to see what's in front of you through different eyes. Seeing the world from another perspective, whether spatially or mentally, can introduce you to all sorts of hidden treasures. The root of the discovery process often lies in finding another way of looking at the world. The common human reaction to insects is one example. Spinning its web in a dark corner, a spider may seem drab, frightening, and mysterious. But seen up close weaving silver snowflakes between the branches of a tree, they can look like colored jewels.

Sometimes, there are experiences in life that from your vantage point may seem confusing, alarming, or worrisome. Or there may be events that look insignificant from where you are standing right now. Try seeing them from another point of view. Bury your face in the grass and look at the world from a bug's vantage point. Explore your home as if you were a small child. Take a ride in a small aircraft and experience the world from a bird's eye view. Just as kneeling down sometimes helps you see more closely when you are looking for lost treasure, so can standing back help you appreciate the broader picture of what you are looking at. In doing so, you'll experience very different worlds.

Daily Feng Shui Tip

Daily Feng Shui Tip by Ellen Whitehurst for Thursday, May 19

Flights of fancy could conceivably preoccupy any one of us today what with all the bird energies flying around. According to Feng Shui, birds bring sometimes surprising but always excellent news. The unexpected appearance of birds can feather your nest with opportunities as well. And they bring joy! I get questions from people who are inquisitive when a certain species of bird seems bent on getting their attention. They want to know the symbology behind these aviary attention getters. For instance, if a red bird shows up on your personal path, then spread your wings and soar because good fortune is on its way. Spying red birds in your environment is even better if you're a writer or in the publishing biz! That red bird can give serious lift to special project or plans! An image of the phoenix, when placed inside your Fame area, can bring immediate rewards and recognition for all of your community or creative efforts. That same phoenix (a peacock will do) when literally placed to the right of an image or a statue of a dragon completes a couple that can bring romance and love out of mid-air. If you want to engineer some aviary attention, just scatter some birdseed on your front walkway to bring opportunity right to your front door.

Today's Front Pages

'Today's Front Pages' is an online presentation of one of the Newseum's most popular exhibits. 'Through a special agreement with more than 800 newspapers worldwide, the Newseum displays these front pages each day on its website.' In case you're not sure what of Newseum is, this is a physical museum that opened in downtown Washington, D.C. in 2007. "The Newseum features seven levels of galleries, theaters, retail spaces and visitor services. It offers a unique environment that takes museumgoers behind the scenes to experience how and why news is made." Now is the time to check if your paper is being properly represented in this Newseum. It really is fascinating what directions modern museums are taking with the technology now available!

Imaging Everest

The name Mount Everest brings to mind the soaring heights of the Himalayan Mountains, the mountain range of which Mount Everest is the tallest; the mountain also has the distinction of being the
tallest peak in the world. This particular exhibit marks the 50th anniversary of the first successful ascent to the summit, the accomplishment having been made by Sir Edmund Hillary and
Tenzing Norgay in 1953. The site features the History of Everest, the Tibetan People, Everest Expeditions in the 1920's and 1930's, Nepal in the 1950's as well as sections on Hillary and Norgay
and their actual 1953 expedition. Here is a good starting place for gathering Everest information. Who knows when a wild hair might strike you and you'll want to make a similar expedition yourself. For those of us not so adventurous, the cyber-journey is equally compelling!

The Disney images were 'doctored' to match the Royal Wedding, though...
Snopes mentioned it. The hair and dresses were different colours in the
original,uniform changed, etc.

Go Away Ghost

Scatter beans around your house. This will keep out unwanted ghosts for one year. If they grow, the spell's effects will last even longer! Simple, fun, and effective! My kids aren't afraid now at all!

This is great! Thanks.

Subject: [13Witches] Go Away Ghost Spell

My two kids are 6 and 7, and I was able to teach them some of their first spells recently. My kids and I have been separated since my son was 2 and my daughter was 10 mos, and now (thanks in part to your prayers) we are getting ready to spend our first summer together!

We are also in the process of preparing Our Old House to move in. My son is afraid of ghosts, and so we found this spell in Judika Illes' Encyclopedia of 5,000 Spells (although I'm paraphrasing):

Go Away Ghost

Scatter beans around your house. This will keep out unwanted ghosts for one year. If they grow, the spell's effects will last even longer! Simple, fun, and effective! My kids aren't afraid now at all!

Magic by the Stars--Part 1

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Magic by the Stars--Part 1

Timing is very important in magic, and it depends upon the influences of the stars. "As above, so below," the saying goes. Without putting in years of study, you can just follow some simple astrological rules to harness planetary forces to achieve your goals. Understand the themes of each sign and planet, but pay particular attention to the Moon and Mercury. They whiz through the sky so quickly that they offer a guide for timing that is very useful in spellwork.

The Moon

The Moon is our closest neighbor, and the most easily observable. It moves through the zodiac completely in twenty-nine and a half days, staying in each sign about two and a half days and taking on the flavor, mood, and meaning of that particular sign. It's like she's changing costumes. When she moves through Scorpio, her dress reveals her to be very mysterious, very feminine, and very sensual for two and a half days. Then she moves into Sagittarius and puts on her running shoes and grabs her bow and arrows, tent, ad soap box as she flies out the door.

Surely you've noticed by now that the Moon is measured by her relationship to the Sun. When she's close to the Sun, and thus in the same zodiac sign, we can't see her. She hides under the Sun's beams. This is the Dark Moon which, within a day or two, begins to move into the New Moon phase. A week later she shows up on any calendar in her first-quarter phase. Astrologically, this is the fourth zodiac sign from where she started; she has just "quartered" her cycle.

From the New Moon to the Full Moon, she is considered to be waxing. The Full Moon is halfway around the zodiac from where she started, so she must be in the sign opposite the sign the Sun is in. It's important to know that the very minute the Moon is full, she starts to wane.

Look at the calendar for the symbol for the fourth or last quarter. It appears seven or eight days after the Full Moon, just another "quarter" or ninety degrees farther around the zodiac. If you look at the sky at night, you will have noticed that the waxing Moon always has a full, curving belly on the right hand side, and the waning Moon has a curve on the left. Symbolically, the Moon is always drawn as a waxing Moon.

So now you have a bare outline of what you need to know about the Moon to begin to set up a spell. It's also helpful to know that Monday is the Moon's day, and the first hour after dawn that day is the Moon's hour. That timing gives added pizzazz to a spell or psychic studies. Planetary hours give a real boost to your workings and are worth investigating for their added punch.

There are other considerations as well, such as how the phase of the Moon can determine the best hour to cast a spell. For example, the New Moon gets up with the Sun at dawn. The Sun hogs all the light while keeping the Moon close. Then they both go to bed at sunset. The power hour of the New Moon is noontime, which is the highest point she reaches at this time. In a couple of days, as soon as the Moon starts pulling away from the Sun, the power hour shifts to the halfway point in the cycle. So the Full Moon, which rises at sunset and sets at dawn, has the power hour at midnight. The power hour is always the best time to cast your spell.

As the Moon moves through a particular zodiac sign, you can apply the energy of that sign to your magical workings--but of course it's not quite as simple as that. As the Moon does her work, she comes into contact with the other planets. This contact is called an aspect and is a mathematical relationship first described by Ptolemy, a famous Greek astrologer who lived two thousand years ago.

When the Moon is in a particular sign and has finished making aspects to all the other planets, she can remain in that sign, just hanging out with nothing to do until she moves into the next sign. This is called void-of-course (or void) Moon time, and it can vary as the Moon moves through each sign. Often she can be void for just minutes, but sometimes she can be rudderless for a couple of days before moving on.

For magical purposes, when the Moon is void, her energy can no longer be harnessed; indeed it can work against whatever you are trying to accomplish with your spell. It is important to remember in astrology that, with the exception of the New Moon, if you have missed an aspect of timing, it is gone, done, over! Ya blew it! Time to move on and reschedule.

Check the calendar or almanac carefully to see the window of opportunity you have for your spell. If you are starting a new business and want to access Capricorn business energy, then cast your spell before the Moon has her last aspect and becomes void in Capricorn--hopefully when she is waxing.

Learn to flow with the lunar cycle. This is a natural cycle that can help you organize your time, reduce stress, and generally perform better. This is the cycle of the Goddess, and learning to work with it is crucial for spiritual, physical, and mental well-being. If the Moon is a key player in your chart because it rules your Sun (Cancer) or your Ascendant, then it is doubly important to observe and value her rhythms.

However, it's also important not to micromanage your life using astrology. You can't just take to your bed every other day or so while the Moon is void, and you certainly can't pull the covers over your head three or four times a year for the weeks when Mercury is retrograde. But it is important to use the planetary energies available when you are trying to accomplish something considerably meaningful.

For example, research by astrologer Debbi Kempton-Smith revealed that in every one of the presidential elections from 1900 to 1972 the losing candidate was nominated by his party during a void-of-course Moon. Jimmy Carter's second-term nomination in 1980, Al Gore's in 2000, and John Kerry's in 2004 were all done during a Moon that was void.

Research has also shown that our judgment is slightly skewed during these minutes and hours, and decisions may result in false starts or errors. Delays can bring frustration. Activities with important consequences like job interviews or surgery or spell casting should never be scheduled during a void Moon. What you accomplish then may need major adjusting later.

Because a void Moon often disrupts communication, it's just as easy to bypass this time in spell work, rescheduling for later. Or, you can make it work for you. Estelle Daniels, whose book "Astrological Magick" belongs in every Witch's cupboard, swears that Ronald Reagan, who did have an astrologer on retainer, always scheduled his speeches to deliver excuses or unpleasant news during a void Moon. The public just didn't pay attention to or acknowledge these manipulations.

Add the cocoa nibs, cocoa powder, salt, almond oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E oil.

Hit pulse a few times to blend.

Store in a glass or plastic jar, and scoop out for use with a spoon or a seashell.

Massage the scrub into skin, then rinse with warm water.

Truth Spell

Truth Spell

1 white candle
white flower petals
1 picture, or the persons name on a piece of paper
A spell box

Cast the circle. After casting the circle light the candle and lay the
picture down in front of it. Put the petals in the spell box and then say:

Silence now thy lying tongue
Only truth and honesty come
from thy lips and from thy tongue
`Til the next full moon doth come

As you say this burn the picture in the candle flame. Once it is
turned to ash, take the spell box with the white petals and put the
ashes in the box. Keep it `til the next moon then throw its contents
to the winds.
Also wear a tigers eye, when one wears this stone people find it
difficult to lie to them.

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.

Effigies

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Effigies

An effigy is a kind of mock dummy of a person; they have been used since
ancient times for all kinds of rituals, and they are still used today when
people become angry with some figure of state, for instance an angry group
burn an effigy of their president, prime minister, king or queen – more
recently effigies of George W Bush have been burnt as a public protest
against his policies on Iraq and Afghanistan. In some cases, like on
November 5th in the UK, effigy burning is part of a long-standing tradition.

In the UK on what is popularly known as Guy Fawke's Night or Bonfire Night
(5th November), large firework displays can be seen in pretty much every
city, town and village, often with an accompanying bonfire with an effigy of
Guy Fawkes thrown on the top and burnt. Frequently the effigy of Guy Fawkes
is made a few days before the event and, more in the past now, sometimes
children will transport the 'Guy' around their local area in a wheelbarrow
and ask, 'a penny for the guy?', which would of course translate into more
money than a penny in modern times, but may often be collected for charity.

The event of Bonfire Night is light-hearted and, although most children
learn of the tradition's origins to a degree, all of its sinister
connotations are long forgotten. The idea of burning an effigy of Guy Fawkes
first came about around 400 years ago when James I was king. A group of
Catholics, along with Guido Fawkes the gunpowder expert, schemed to blow up
parliament during its state opening in what was to be known the 'Gunpowder
Plot'. The planned act of terrorism failed when they were caught in the act
before anything disastrous happened. Guy Fawkes Night then became a
celebration of violent anti-Catholic sentiment; children today still learn
the rhyme, 'Remember, remember, the 5th of November,' which was originally a
blatant verbal attack on all Catholics, but is now no more than a bunch of
words that remind children of the date Bonfire Night takes place – in the
early days effigies of the pope were known to be tossed on the fire.

As already stated, Bonfire Night has lost most of its sinister Lewes Bonfore
Night, Sussex in Englandconnotation and political meaning, though the town
of Lewes (pronounced like the boys' name, Lewis) in East Sussex in southern
England makes a much bigger deal of the event than most parts of the
country. People come from miles around by train and car, in fact extra
trains are scheduled to get everyone to this old town with its castle, to
see the fireworks, bonfire and street parades of men and women in 400
year-old style costumes, wielding burning torches like a medieval angry mob
and playing traditional marching tunes such as the British Grenadier. At the
Lewes event they will often burn effigies of this year's current most hated
person in the town, a couple of years ago Osama Bin Laden was the lucky
guest to be thrown on the fire.

Still, going back long before the days of Guy Fawkes, effigy burning was a
lot more gruesome. Some of the earliest records of effigy burning were
written down by the Romans who observed the pagan rituals of Midsummer
upheld by the Britons, a time of either agricultural abundance or miserable
crop failure – the flames of the fires were to ward off any evil spirits
that might affect the crops. Human effigies were burnt as offerings to the
gods and as a symbol of killing off the old to allow the birth of the new,
or rebirth of the land. The gruesome part, according to the Roman texts, is
the offering of real human sacrifices – people being locked inside a wicker
man and burned alive, as portrayed in the 1970s movie starring Edward
Woodward, The Wicker Man.

Then of course in a wholly different part of the world we have voodoo and
its associated dolls, though they aren't always as sinister as Hollywood
would have us believe. In real voodoo the dolls are hardly used at all, even
in Haiti where the traditions are commonly practiced. When a doll is used
for magical purposes it can be used for good reasons as well as malevolent.
The doll is fashioned after the person it is meant to represent and a lock
of their hair, or something they own, is attached to it. The practitioner of
voodoo then concentrates intensely on the object of their will and sticks
pins in the doll to emphasise the way they wish to affect the person.

One of the main reasons dolls are used in this way in Africa is for
fertility rituals, where dolls are usually carved from wood and it is
believed they bring good luck and decrease the chance of complications
during birth. It used to be common practice for a priest to create the doll
then give it to the expectant mother who would then treat it like her child,
then pass it on to her real child to play with after she or he was born.

Back to the UK again, there are many effigies of men and animals carved into
chalk hillsides that are thought to be fertility symbols – the Long Man of
Wilmington, the White Horse of Uffington, the Cerne Abbas Giant in Dorset
have all been there for centuries. The traditions of fertility connected
with the Cerne Abbas Giant are so deeply ingrained that many today still
believe in his power, couples are still going up on the hill to make love on
the tip of the Cerne Abbas Giants's 8ft-long penis to increase the chances
of pregnancy.

Aromatherapy Tip

Roman Chamomile is soothing and will also promote a good nights
sleep. Put 1 drop on the pillow at bedtime. Used in the bath it can be
blended with liquid soap to help it disperse. Use a lower dosage, 50% or
1/2 the recommended amount if pregnant or breastfeeding, with children or
the elderly. The number of drops of essential oils used should vary in
direct proportion to body weight, taking into account the age of the person
as well as mental and physical health. The very old should use the same
number of drops as children and babies half the amount of children.
