DailyOM - Taking a Media Break
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

May 18, 2011
Unplugging
Taking a Media Break
Taking a break from media in all forms is like a cleanse for your soul.

In this modern age, we seldom question the pervasive presence of the media.
Television, radio, newspapers, magazines, telephones, and websites are part of
most people’s everyday experiences. They enable us to stay informed while
sometimes taking us on amazing journeys. But the content and experiences that
these outlets offer also consume space in our minds that can have a profound
effect on our emotional state. If you are someone who feels like your life is
oversaturated with the “buzz” that comes from the media, you may want to
consider taking a break. A media fast involves not watching television, reading
any newspapers or magazines, checking or sending any e-mails, or even talking on
the phone.

On the simplest level, undertaking this fast will free up thinking space. When
you are constantly being bombarded with signals coming from outside sources, it
can be hard to disassociate yourself, particularly if what you are hearing or
reading is negative or stressful. Avoiding the media, for a few weeks, or even
just a few days, can help you center yourself. The fast may even introduce you
to creative aspects of yourself that you didn’t know existed, as you enjoy some
quiet time and reconnect with other interests. We may feel like something is
lacking from our lives during the first few days of a fast. But it is this
emptiness that opens up the space for a more expansive and clutter-free life.

Research has shown that both news and television programming can have an intense
effect on mood, even causing sadness and anxiety. Without the “noise” of the
media running through your head, you are freer to focus your attention inward.
Ideas will present themselves to you more readily, and you will find yourself
available to revel in the small joys of your own life. You also will be freer to
live in the present moment, rather than focusing on what’s going on in the news
or your favorite soap opera. A media break can also help you develop a more
conscious relationship with news and fictional entertainment. When you aren’t
continuously subjected to the media, you are able to look at what you are seeing
or reading more objectively. Taking a break from the media may also give you a
greater sense of calm, balance, well-being, and a new perspective on life.

SHAMANIC HEALING CIRCLE
With Shaman Denise Saracco
Friday, May 20, 2011 7:00-9:00p.m. Spiritual Exchange: $25.00

This monthly sacred circle ebbs and flows in accordance to how Spirit calls.
Some circles will mirror a traditional drumming circle while others will focus
more on personal/global healing. Most every circle will feature at least one
journey for personal healing & exploration in a way that weaves with the
month's focus. All circles, though they may have varying focuses, will be in
alignment with the natural Earth, Moon, and Cosmic cycles. The voices of all
participants are heard as we work and play in Oneness.

May Circle Focus: Calling The Soul Back Home
Our Western society commonly swaps energy with friends, coworkers, family,
significant others, etc. With the giving of ourselves to others, we become
fragmented, holding energy that is not our own and realizing that energy cannot
help us become 'whole' again. We become accustomed to walking through life with
an incomplete feeling. Sometimes, we don't even know that we're not 'fully
here'.

In this month's drumming circle, we will explore via journeywork what parts
of other people in our lives we are holding onto. In ceremony, we will release
these parts that are not our own and call back the parts of us that are ready
to return home to us.

*Please bring drums/rattles, eyeshade/bandana, pillow/blanket, water,
notebook/pen to record your experience!

Today's Goddess: Fuwch Gyfeilioru Hay on Wye (Wales)

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Wed May 18, 2011 8:34 pm (PDT)

Today's Goddess: Fuwch Gyfeilioru
Hay on Wye (Wales)

Themes: Creativity; Communication; Arts; Learning; Knowledge
Symbols: Cow; Milk

About Fuwch Gyfeilioru: Fuwch Gyfeilioru is the Welsh Goddess of knowledge,
inspiration, wisdom, and happiness. Appearing sometimes as an elfin cow, she
has an endless supply of magical milk that refreshes ailing dispositions with
joy and creativity.

To Do Today: The Hay on Wye is a Welsh festival of words and language,
specifically in the form of plays, music, debate, poetry and other creative
written and verbal forms that certainly honor Fuwch Gyfeilioru in spirit. In
keeping with the theme, take out your magic diary today. Place one hand on the
cover, asking for this Goddess's insight, then read it over. You'll be
pleasantly surprised by your awareness of metaphysical matters and your growth
in the last few months. Drink a glass of milk, consume milk by-products, or
include beef as part of a meal to physically accept Fuwch Gyfeilioru's powers
into yourself. Focus intently on your goal as you eat or drink, and don't
forget to thank the Goddess for her gift by way of a mealtime prayer.

To motivate a little extra creativity, make a milk shake (any flavor, but add
a pinch of cinnamon for energy or nutmeg for luck). The blender "whips up"
Fuwch Gyfelioru's energy in the shake as you incant,

Creativity I claim, by my will and in the Goddess's name!

Drink expectantly.

Daily Aromatherapy  - Appetite Suppressors

Daily Aromatherapy - Appetite Suppressors

Because smell plays such a large role in how food tastes, overloading our sense
of smell by inhaling the vapor of certain essential oils can suppress the
desire to eat....says the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy.

To suppress the appetite, it suggest oils such as Dill weed, Ginger, Cumin
Seed, Lemon, Vanilla or Spearmint. Open a bottle and inhale the fragrance for 5
to 10 minutes. If you inhale for less than five minutes......you might
stimulate the appetite. Change the scents daily!

Other oils mentioned (from various sources) include; Grapefruit,Peppermint,
Fennel, Clary Sage, Sandalwood
and Ylang Ylang

Cusp of Optimism Spell

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Wed May 18, 2011 8:36 pm (PDT)

Cusp of Optimism Spell
Incense of the day: Cedar

As we currently pass time between the start of spring and the longest day of
the year, we are already enjoying the extra hours of sunlight in the Northern
Hemisphere. This cusp of spring and summer is a time when we feel optimistic
and abundant. It’s a time that we often spend more hours in the garden or
spring-cleaning our homes. Today, make a start to remove stagnant energy that
has accumulated over the winter months, and take care now to cleanse the space
in your home. Don't despair if you cannot complete your spring-cleaning in the
space of one day; just keep plugging away a little at a time. Take your
unwanted clothing and other items to a charity shop. Clean your windowsills and
bench tops with diluted white vinegar or eucalyptus. Clearing space makes way
for new opportunities to enter your life. When your are finished, ring a bell
in each corner of each room to mobilize energy, and say:

With each bell ring,
As I scrub and clean,
No more staleness,
Can be felt or seen.

Indian Poet Chandi

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Wed May 18, 2011 8:37 pm (PDT)

We kneel before her, because she is kind and terrible.
We raise our arms to her, because she is gentle and fierce.
We call out to her, again and again: Kali, Mother, O Goddess,
we know it is you who holds up this world, we know
it is you we see shining forth in every being, we know
it is you who is awareness, you who is hunger, you
who is power and peace and faith and beauty and compassion
and contentment and sleep itself and all life, we know
it is you who is our mother, the mother of all forms, and that
you bring love and joy to all who sing your praises.
~Indian Poet Chandi

The Goddess is all contradictions: loving and terrifying at once, both kindly
and fear-invoking. This is because, as the great Hindu poet Chandi reminds us,
the goddess is all that is. And life includes both pain and pleasure, hunger
and the satisfaction of hunger.

The Goddess path is not always an easy one. There is some tragedy, as well as
some joy, in every life. To praise Kali, the Dark Mother, is to begin to heal
ourselves of the falsity of wishing to embrace only life's pleasures. We are
deeply alive when we suffer. Suffering connects us not only to each other - for
all humans suffer - but also to the goddess in her darkest aspects. Without
pain, we would not treasure the marvelous delights of life as deeply. Learning
to accept Kali is the most intense challenge of the Goddess path.
