The Friend We Want To Be
Evaluating Our Relationships
It is important to look at ourselves and notice what kind of friend we are to the people in our lives.
There comes a time in all our lives when we may need to evaluate our relationships, making sure that they are having a positive effect on us, rather than dragging us down. Without realizing it, we may be spending precious time and energy engaging in friendships that let us down, rather than cultivating ones that support and nourish us along our path. Life, with its many twists, turns, and challenges, is difficult enough without us entertaining people in our inner circle who drain our energy. We can do so much more in this world when we are surrounded by people who understand what we're trying to do and who positively support our efforts to walk our path.
We can begin this evaluation process by simply noticing how we feel in the context of each one of our close relationships. We may begin to see that an old friend is still carrying negative attitudes or ideas that we ourselves need to let go of in order to move forward. Or we may find that we have a long-term relationship with someone who has a habit of letting us down, or not showing up for us when we need support. There are many ways to go about changing the status quo in situations like this, having a heart to heart with our friend showing through example. This process isn't so much about abandoning old friends as it is about shifting our relationships so that they support us on our journey rather than holding us back.
An important part of this process is looking at ourselves and noticing what kind of friend we are to the people in our lives. We might find that as we adjust our own approach to a relationship, challenging ourselves to be more supportive and positive, our friends make adjustments as well and the whole world benefits.

About Fornax: In Rome, Fornax guided the baking of bread, which being the proverbial staff of life, was no small matter. Today Fornax still stands ready to watch over our hearths, as the goddess of the oven, which is the true heart of any home. If her fires go out, folklore says, warmth among the homes' occupants dwindles soon thereafter.
To Do Today: Fornacalia was the Roman festival of ovens, in which Fornax was invoked by baking wheat breads and other grain-related foods. So think about dusting off your cookbooks, especially any recipes from your family, and start baking! Even people pressed for time can usually make a batch of bread from frozen dough. If you only own a microwave, have no fear - microwaveable soft-dough pretzels are readily available in the freezer section of your supermarket. Or, simpler still, have toast for breakfast this morning to internalize Fornax's warm emotions. On the other hand, if you'd like to give Fornax a much-needed break from her toils at your place, go out and eat! Just make sure to have some bread as part of the meal to welcome Fornax to your feast.
Finally, take any dried bread you may have and crumble it up for the birds and squirrels. Focus on your desire for love and closeness in your life. The birds and squirrels will convey your wishes to Fornax, the heavens, and the four corners of creation.

To gather money for a property or a business you want to invest in, take four stones and place them at each directional corner. Take silver coins and join them with these to form a square. Write what you want on a piece of paper and place it in the center. See yourself in this new opportunity. Trace coins with your finger, starting in the east, and say:

Let fortune come.

If you can, leave this altar up. Every time you go by it, envision yourself in your new home or life. This spell is in honor of Terminus—an old and important deity. His festival, the Terminalia, was held in February. Landowners laid sacrifices at the boundary stones of their property.

Increasing Your Vitality and Creativity Spell
This time of year has been associated with creativity, fire, poetry, and healing.
Leo Moons, too, are generally associated with fiery activities and with creativity.
This later part of winter of course can sometimes be a time of reduced energy
and low vitality in the Northern Hemisphere as we tire of the cold and short day.
The time is right now for spellwork that will strengthen our internal fires and help
us to feel vibrant, alive, and creative again. Call on the returning light and the Leo
Full Moon to help kindle your internal fires.
To prepare, you will need a red candle, some red stones such as amber, ruby,
or garnet, and a piece of red cloth. In the evening time, put the red cloth out in a
special part of your house where you contemplate your space in private
(or with a couple of good friends.) Arrange the stones near the candle on the piece
of cloth; these will help you energize and ground your creative energies.
After you have lit the candles, chant these words aloud several times.
Fire burn, fire bright,
Help my inner spark to light.

Where does happiness come from? Today we are told that happiness comes from
holding a perfect job, having a perfect body, being in a perfect
relationship. But the Hopi and other ancient people of the Americas made happiness something simpler, and more profound. To them, happiness was
being attuned to the natural world around us - and fulfilling one's
duties toward that world.
For the world does not just exist
outside ourselves. We interact with it at every turn. Our actions have
consequences: just as surely as today's weather will affect our way of
dressing to go outdoors, our actions affect our world. At this moment,
the liquefied bodies of dinosaurs are being burned to heat our air;
waters are being directed from their natural sources into our homes;
fuel is being burned at a distant site and carried to our buildings for
electricity. Even as we sit still, reading, we consume the products of
the earth. We are never separate from her, not for an instant. Let us
grow more aware of this deep connection, and find not only happiness but responsibility within it.

Hands of Change (HOC) will meet on Feb. 17 at the Unitarian Society, 176 Tices Lane, East Brunswick, NJ.

Kokopelli and Fe'e will serve as Ritual Couple in Service, with Nadine Bergeron as Lead Drummer.
PLEASE BRING YOUR DRUM or other percussion instrument (or just bring your playful heart!).
We will first cast circle by drawing down and sharing MoonFire.
Then, we will invite the Elemental Spirits and the God and Goddess, using drumming and dancing.
Once the circle is cast and warded, we will conduct a working to use Full
Moon energy to revitalize us and empower us to fulfill our dreams and
accomplish our resolutions for healing change in our lives. Whether
you've started at Samhain, Yule, or New Years Day - or at a HOC ritual
or your own personal occasion - many have made resolutions to improve
their own life in some way. (And if you haven't chosen such a
resolution, you can take time to do so at this ritual.)
This
Thursday's ritual will provide an opportunity to give you a BOOST in
your resolve to continue to make the changes you need, whether for the
month, for the season, or for the year.
AND it will be a fun
way to pass a cold winter's night, as we help warm each other's hearts
and look forward to the approaching Spring season.
Besides your
drum, we ask you to bring a munchie snack or a beverage to share at the
social time immediately after the ritual. Also, bring a friend!
