Two tall trees, a birch and a beech, are growing in the
woods. A small tree begins to grow between them, and the
beech says to the birch: "Is that a son of a beech or a
son of a birch?"

The birch says he cannot tell.

Just then a woodpecker lands on the sapling. The birch says,
"Wood- pecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell if that is a son of a
beech or a son of a birch?"

The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree. He replies:
"It is neither a son of a beech nor a son of a birch. It is, however,
the best piece of Ash I have ever put my pecker in."

Hi Jackie, you can post these to the group on Saturdays, each week, if you like.  You can also place a link in the "Links" section on the 13Witches home site.

Daily Feng Shui Tip for Friday, June 24

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Fri Jun 24, 2011 12:26 pm (PDT)

Daily Feng Shui Tip by Ellen Whitehurst for Friday, June 24

The energies infusing this 'Celebrate the Senses Day' certainly make it a Feng Shui friendly sort of day! In Feng Shui we say that anything that appeals to any one of the standard five senses also attracts healthy, happy and prosperity aligned energies. So we use stimulants and triggers like essential oils or incense to activate the sense of smell and engage that energy to affect a specific life aspiration. Sound and music appeal to our auditory senses as they can make for a melodic life. Beautiful and bright colors create an optimistic ocular connection and help us to see where we need to heal and become whole. Intentionally preparing powerful foods with love and humor lend delicious energies to each magical mouthful and to the positive and nutritious effects those foods will have on the body. Touch your environment today and harness some excellent energies by burning some sweet smelling incense while also bringing a bright color into your living arena. Red will fan the flames of the Fame area while embracing a pretty pink set of sheets on your bed could bring you the love of your life. Play music that you love and dance until your heart pumps pure joy. And then settle down to a favorite food and take your time as you eat. Appreciate the effort and then give gratitude to the food so that you can nourish and nurture yours. Consciously celebrate the five senses for even ten minutes today and see your whole life shift in the most delightful way.

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.

Love Each Day,
Lady Nightshayde

Old Midsummer's Day--June 24

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Fri Jun 24, 2011 12:50 pm (PDT)

Old Midsummer's Day

In the British Isles, this day was celebrated as Midsummer's Day. Not to be confused with the astrological date of the Summer Solstice, this day also has quite a bit of legend and lore surrounding it. This is a classic time to work with the faeries. Here is a spell designed to both celebrate and work with the faeries in your garden. Before you begin, take a moment to plant some pretty flowers in the garden, just for the faeries. (Keep in mind that fragrant blossoms are well loved by the Fey.) Then leave a small tumbled stone for them as a sign of your intentions. Now repeat the spell.

"June twenty-fourth is the old Midsummer's Day,
Faeries gather around and hear me, I pray.
Bless my life and garden with your loving energy,
No tricks, just joy, and a friendship between you and me."

Sage--The Herb of Immortality

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Sage--The Herb of Immortality

You probably know sage as a cooking spice. But it's toogood just to keep in your kitchen and break out only for your Thanksgivingturkey.

Your ancient ancestors prized sage. They thought people whodrank sage tea never got old.
They called sage the "herb ofimmortality."

In ancient Rome, if you wanted to pick sage you had to have aceremony. The ancient Aztecs also revered it, and used the leaves to makeface paint that marked rank in their society.

Sage can have an incredible influence on your health. Not onlycan it make breathing problems and headaches go away very quickly, but ithas a mental effect.
It tends to be calming and somehow clarifying. You get a mentalfocus.

If you don't believe it, just get some sage and try it.You break up sage and breathe it in, and right away you feel like you justwoke up from a dream, or you just finished meditating. I feel like I wentto the beach and just came back.

It seems to relieve you of whatever is bothering you. Sage isremarkable in that way. And you know, that's what the Indians used itfor. They used it to clarify the mind.

Sage gets its scientific name salvia from the Latin word"salvare," which means save, or rescue. There are differentkinds of sage – almost 900 different types. But the ones used forhealing and wellness are garden sage (salvia officinalis) andSpanish sage (salvia lavandulaefolia).

I grow garden sage in my yard here in Florida and it has adistinct, almost intoxicating smell.
The terrific aroma comes from three chemicals. One is camphor, which has a fresh minty-herbal-woody smell. Another is alpha-thujone, whichis similar but spicy. And there's viridiflorol that's alsosimilar to camphor, but sweeter.

They're part of the reason why sage is used in so manycosmetics and fragrances. But I like sage because it keeps bugs away frommy other plants, and attracts bees and butterflies to help pollinate them.

Sage has some other strong ingredients, like cineole, which isa main component of eucalyptus and tea tree oil. Together with camphor, they give sage its power to break up congestion and help respiration.

And sage oil also appears to have some anti-cancer properties, especially from overexposure to ultraviolet radiation, in clinical trials.
Sage is a known memory enhancer, too. In a recent study, theytook a group of people and gave them either a placebo or Spanish sage. After only an hour, the sage group had improved performance on memory andattention tasks. They also had reduced mental fatigue and increasedalertness that lasted for over four hours.

You can use sage at home and get all its benefits, from clearerthinking to better sleep, a stronger immune system and even heartprotection. Sage is easy to find, and it's easy to use as often asyou like.

Make Some Sage Tea: I often prefer tea as a freshand convenient way to use herbs.

You can use sage leaves in teas to treat headaches, anxiety andtension, insomnia, coughs, indigestion and fever. You can also cool andstore your sage tea so you can use it as a wash to treat skin irritationsand bites, abrasions, bruises and inflammation.

Sage tea is helpful in another important way. In one study, researchers gave women 300 ml of sage tea twice a day for four weeks. TheirHDL (the "good" cholesterol that gets rid of plaque in yourarteries) levels went up by 50 percent!2
The same study found that sage tea increases levels of SOD,what I call you body's "master antioxidant." It's3,500 times more powerful than vitamin C. And after drinking sage tea, SODactivity jumped by more than 30%.
If you have dried sage, boil a teaspoonful brewed in a cup forno more than 2-3 minutes. It should never taste bitter. If it does, the teawas brewed too long, the sage was old or powdered, or you have the wrongsage.
For fresh sage, use a handful of the leaves and stems, and brewfor about five minutes, and strain into another cup.

I would stay away from sage tea bags because you don't know howlong the herb has been in the bag. It may have been on a store shelf longenough to lose its medicinal value.

Sage Oil Aromatherapy: In a study of garden sage, researchers let people simply smell sage's essential oil aroma, andthey did better on cognitive function, mood and memory tests.3

It has a relaxing, purifying effect. If you struggle to sleepat night because your mind is always racing, the aroma can help clear yourhead so you can sleep soundly. Some people will even tell you it enhancestheir dreams.

Organic, essential sage oil is available at many places on theWeb, and at your local health food store. You can apply it to your skin, use it in a bath, or let it diffuse into the air in your room.

Use Sage In Your Cooking: You can't overdo sage orit's all you'll taste in your food. But it's veryversatile in that you can dry it, freeze it or use it fresh, and it'sstill just as good. You can even crush it in your fingers and create a sagerub for chicken and other meats.

The flowers are edible, too. I would say they have a moredelicate flavor that the leaves and shoots. You can also toss the parts ofthe plant onto a charcoal grill to flavor those foods this summer.
To Your Good Health,

Al Sears, MD

Hello! I just recently joined your group. My real name is Felicity, craft name is Zephyre Storm-Phoenix.
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know (maybe you would want to tell the group. I didn't want it to seem like I was trying to advertise or anything.) Amazon.com has a BUNCH of free books on all sorts of things... they have histories (etc) of pretty much everything. They are Kindle books, but you can download Kindle for PC and it is also free. I only just recently found this out. But, it has been very helpful to me. I just wanted to share the free stuff!
Blessed Be!

Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance.
Confucius

This sounds similar to the quote I often use as my signature:

You never know how much you know until you know how much you'll never know.
