All the thoughts being shared in this discussion are very insightful
and informative; I'm collating everyone's thoughts. I mentioned what
I was doing to Leela (editor of Spellcraft) and she is very
interested to hear this feedback.

Something mentioned by a couple of people, and that I can personally
relate to, is what I'll call the "light-on-content" problem. This in
turn must influence the attractiveness of any magazine and the
decision to purchase.

The quality of content is not just measured in the written word, but
also in the visual experience that the publication can offer. As a
graphic design, good typography and interesting photography can
influence me to buy a magazine and explore new areas, but ultimately
the question/decision of loyalty to a magazine will be influenced by
what I can learn from it's contributors.

Many of the pagan/occult publications that have made their mark in
the past have done this through providing something that you just
can't get anywhere else. The "Charmed" brigade, as Frances calls
them, just don't rate because their cardboard-personalities have no
depth and are predictably obvious. It would be a different thing
altogether if this were literature, but it's not; it's escapism.

One of the biggest short-comings of the current batch of magazines on
offer is their parade of narcissistic personalities who offer little
more than a self-obsessive hogging of the limelight. Simply put,
there's been too much self-promotion from flakey writers. (I am not
referring to any present authors engaged in this discussion.) They
are offering me nothing, and consequently do not engage me as reader.

I buy Spellcraft occasionally but not on a regular basis as it is mainly
advertisements and I agree with previous posts, for new people to the
craft who are into using others spells for this and that. Nothing wrong in
appealing to newbies and a good start for people. It is quite good
artwork. I subscribe to Northern Earth from the UK (not pagan
particularly but good for folk and archeological side of things). I also
subscribe now to 'Hex' a new heathen mag and refreshingly well researched
and global in content.

Hello,
Just wanted to add a couple of things to this most interesting discussion, Tim. The only reason I would buy that particular magazine (or any magazine) is an interest in the person interviewed. I bought the last one purely because Tori was featured. There's so many fascinating people in the Pagan community, that I'd love to see more feature articles on some of the more colourful ones. Not just the obvious ' TV witches'.
I don't have a problem with the 'light-on content' as if I want more, I'd buy a book. I think Spellcraft in the past hasn't been in a position to pay their contributors which could be a reason that the content may be light. Caroline Tully is a fantastic thinker and writer but nobody can spend too much time on content that's not going to be paid for. I understand Spellcraft's dilemma as magazines in general are really struggling. Even the big names at the moment are fighting to hold their space. If Spellcraft cater too much to a niche market then they're going to lose a lot of their readership that they may need.
I agree with you on the graphic content. Even the late Witchcraft magazine visually looked a lot better as far as photographs go.
One thing I"m generally perplexed by is why some people do prefer on-line or kindles to paper publication. I'm not a techno person but surely the landfill from all these computers and machines as they continue to upgrade the latest gadget is frightening enough without the loss of jobs in publishing added to that?
Axis Mundi do quite a good job with their online newsletter which might be worth Spellcraft looking at for format ideas.
I also like Witchcraft &Wicca from the UK for the small size (not in content but in size). It is light on content but more user friendly if reading in bed.
No need to pick me for a mag as I have my Tori copy. Good job, Tori.
Apologies for waffly post, have been up all night with daughter.
Josephine
