"Celebrate summer--sun-drenched days and starlit nights."

Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape
Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood."

Who’s Making All That Racket After Dark? The Birds That Sing At Night
Posted on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 by eNature

Northern Mockingbird

Great Horned Owl
Is something (or someone) keeping you awake these summer nights?
Many questions come to eNature about night birds calling and other weird and incessant noises in the dark. It seems that there’s a lot of activity taking place when most of us expect our birds to be resting.
What’s going on? And who’s making all that noise in the dark?
Depending on the kinds of calls, and the location in North America, they could be any of at least four bird species.
Whip-poor-wills and their relatives are famous for calling their names, over and over again, sometime into the thousands of times without stopping. Unless you like to fall to sleep to the call of the whip-poor-will, it can become annoying.
Northern Mockingbirds are well known night callers, especially if there is a full moon. Enthusiastic mockingbirds can stay up ALL night, mimicking every bird song in the book as well as other sounds such bells, whistles, and sirens. These are birds that can try the patience of the most committed bird-lover!
If the call is coming from a wetland, it is probably one of the two night-herons, the black-crowned or yellow-crowned. They make squawks and cackles, and sometimes scary noises that will wake the heaviest sleeper.
Owls make another kind of noise in the night, which can range from the hooting of great horned owls to the whinnyings of screech-owls.
All of these birds are protected by state and federal laws, and nothing can or should be done to disturb them, not matter how annoying they are. The best solution is to either enjoy them, or to put plugs in your ears.
Are you hearing your local birds’ and their squawks, chirps or cackles in the night? We always love to hear your stories!

Especially with the beautiful things I see others write. I could never write anything as nice. So, basically I was wondering if people put in spells just from themselves, just others (if allowed), or both?

It varies from person to person and depending upon your traditions. I
have several, actually. The Georgian BoS is copied as it was handed to
me, in the order in which I was given it. Unless the material comes
from an Elder it is never altered nor is it added to. I have my own
BoS which contains the things I have found useful over the years. It
started out as a notebook full of random quotes from books, small
articles, magazine clippings, and bits and pieces found occasionally
on newsgroups (this was before there were a lot of web sites and long
before there were mailing groups). Later, I began organizing it into
sections. I put my own stuff in with the stuff from others and I keep
only what I use in that one. I have yet another, which I allow my
students to browse, which is a collection of general information ---
different traditions, different means of looking at things, different
approaches to rituals and magic, information on different pantheons.
It allows them to have a good overview of what is out there and to
start forming their own ideas about what will work for them and where
they want to go with their spirituality.

Some of my stuff isn't technically religious but it holds a religious
connection for me: quotes, lyrics, poems, short stories, etc.

My BoS keeps changing so I keep them in three ring binders which I
decorate with scrapbooking and personal shrine materials. My current
one is dark blue with window scenes on both sides. The front window is
a stained glass and along the sides I put cast clay pieces
representing the goddess and a morning glory vine. There's a butterfly
going into the window. On the back cover the same morning glory vines
but with a green man motif and a different window. It has a dragonfly
flying off into the forest through it.

The interior pages are printed in caligraphic font which looks like
handwriting and the dividers are decorated with stickers, art, and
other things which are representative of the information in the
section. When I can, I try to match the stationery to the information
being printed on it.

When I have discussions with my Christian friend, I am constantly amazed at
how similar most principles turn out to be. If you take the whole original
sin, Jesus dying to save us from it etc. out of the equation, the actual
precepts he taught tend to correspond closely with our own. Many's the time
I say something and she says, 'Oh yes, the bible says that too...' and goes
on to quote something that fits at least the spirit and sometimes the letter
of what I'd mentioned.

Plastic bags are not optimal for storage of herbs. The plastic, even
if kept in a dark dry place, keeps moisture in and invites mold. I
would suggest either using simple brown bags or else allowing the
herbs to dry on a counter (or in a dehydrator) and then storing them
in an airtight container such as a screw top mason jar. If they're
already dried, you should still seal them in a glass container rather
than plastic. Most of the ones I get which are in plastic don't keep
for more than three months. Additionally, I've found that the plastic
occasionally imparts some of its chemical essence to the herbs,
especially if you're dealing with herbs like mint or basil which have
strong oils.

Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

Reversed Perceptions
Being Projected Upon

We all have issues, as well as undesirable qualities or traits that we don’t like about ourselves. Most of us realize that we are not perfect and that it is natural to have unpleasant thoughts, motivations, desires, or feelings. However, when a person does not acknowledge these, they may ascribe those characteristics to someone else, deeming other people instead as angry, jealous, or insecure. In psychological terms, such blaming and fault finding is called projection.

When we are the target of projections, it can be confusing and frustrating, not to mention maddening, particularly when we know that we are not the cause of another person’s distress. Even people who are well aware of their issues may find that sensitive subjects can bring up unexpected projections. They may feel insecure about a lack of funds and thus view a friend as extravagant. Or, if they really want to get in shape, they may preach the benefits of exercise to anyone and everyone.

While we can try to avoid people we know who engage in projecting their “stuff” onto others, we can’t always steer clear of such encounters. We can, however, deflect some projections through mindfulness and meditation. A useful visualization tool is to imagine wrapping ourselves in a protective light everyday. At other times, we may have to put up a protective shield when we feel a projection coming our way, reminding ourselves that someone else’s issues are not ours. Although it’s difficult not to react when we are the recipient of a projection, it is a good idea to try to remain calm and let the other person know if they are being unreasonable and disrespectful. We all know that it’s not fun to be dumped on. Likewise, we should be mindful that we don’t take our own frustrations out on others. When we take ownership of our thoughts, motivations, desires, and feelings, we are less likely to project our issues or disowned qualities onto
others.

Elder's Meditation of the Day

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"But in the Indian Spirit the land is still vested; it will be until other men are able to divine and meet its rhythm. Men must be born and reborn to belong. Their bodies must be formed of the dust of their forefathers' bones."

-- Luther Standing Bear, OGLALA SIOUX

It is said when we walk on the Earth, we are walking on our ancestors and our unborn children. This is the relationship Native People have with the Earth. It is this relationship which gives insight into the Earth's rhythm and heartbeat and creates the feeling of belonging. If you feel you belong to something, you'll treat it with respect. If you feel you are above something, you'll treat it with disrespect. Indian Spirituality is tied to the Earth. We belong to the Earth along with all other creatures on the Earth. We must align to this realization.

Great Spirit, today, teach me to respect the Earth Mother.

Discernment, Tolerance, and Why It's OK to Question Things

Discernment, Tolerance, and Why It's OK to Question Things
By Patti Wigington, About.com Guide June 20, 2011

I wanted to share with all of you a conversation that I observed taking place on a listserv I subscribe to, in which an individual wrote a post that highly praised a book she had recently read about modern Pagan practice. A number of other folks chimed in, agreeing with her assessment that it was The Awesomest Book Ever, and that clearly the author was a wise and wonderful person. And then all hell broke loose. Why?

Because someone disagreed.

Yes, someone had the gall and bad manners to question the author's scholarship, point out errors and inconsistencies in the book, and gently suggest that readers might want to examine some other sources as well. This, naturally, led to accusations of "intolerant" and "mean" and "jealous," because clearly the dissenter must be an angry and hateful person to bring up any of these things.

Years ago I read a book by a particular author (although not the one referenced in the listserv discussion) and had some doubts about some of the "facts" she presented, many of which were in direct contradiction to (a) things I'd learned in history class, (b) my personal experience and (c) logic. I raised these doubts to a few other folks, and was immediately pounced on by the leader of a discussion group. "She is an author who sells a lot of books," she told me. "Why isn't her word good enough for you? Aren't we supposed to have perfect love and perfect trust?"

To this individual - and apparently lots of the people on the listserv --the notion of "perfect love and perfect trust" meant blindly following the writings of an author without question, and I find that troubling. If we Pagans want to be taken seriously as a community, we do have to question things that don't make sense, or at the very least, ask for the source of information so we can explore it in more depth. Blindly following along, never asking questions or setting higher standards, benefits no one.

More importantly, we need to recognize that the words "intolerant" and "mean" shouldn't be bandied about every time someone disagrees with the majority opinion. Just because I try to be respectful of the opinions and ideas of others doesn't mean I've left my common sense and critical thinking skills at the door.

A while back, we talked about what makes a book worth reading, and the fact that sometimes, you really do have to go through a lot to weed out the stinkers. I'm not saying you should doubt every single thing you read - simply that if what you read seems off, or in contradiction to what you've already learned, there's nothing wrong at all with stopping and saying "Hey, I wonder if I can find out more so I can have an informed opinion."

It's okay to question. It's okay to doubt. And most of all, it's okay to continue exploring and learning so that you can think for yourself and form your own opinions.

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.

Love Each Day,
Lady Nightshayde

Moonscopes for the Week of June 26 to July 2

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Sat Jun 25, 2011 9:03 pm (PDT)

This Week's Moonscopes Forecast
For the week of June 26 to July 2
(Missed last week's forecast? Here it is.)

Sunday, Monday(*v/c-pm): the Moon is in Taurus
Taurus likes for things to be very dependable and to remain the same with very little if any change. Don't be surprised if someone digs in their heels and maintains a most stubborn stance. On the up side, this is a good time to follow through on projects since Taurus also likes to see things completed. This is especially true in the period right before a New Moon, when it is best to spend energy on what is already in the works.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday am(v/c): the Moon is in Gemini
Finish up some communications, whether by phone or email or postal mail, that may have been waiting around on a to-do list. Venus, the planet that rules (is in charge of) pleasant things, is also in Gemini and will likely make all types of interactions sweeter than usual.

Thursday pm, Friday(v/c)(New Moon/Solar Eclipse): the Moon is in Cancer
'Mom, home, and apple pie' is sometimes a common phrase associated with this astrological sign, especially if you have your apple pie with ice cream. The theme suggested by Moon in Cancer (its home base sign) is comfort and nurturing, things that make you feel secure and good all over.

Saturday: the Moon is in Leo
This weekend is one for having fun, going to a party or two, and simply enjoying yourself in whatever ways tickle your fancy.

Check your astrology chart to find which house (section of your chart) has the current Moon sign on the cusp (the beginning edge) & apply Forecast information to that area of your life as well.
For example, the Moon is in Leo and one of the suggestions is to entertain - however Leo is located in the 12th house of your chart, which is an inward energy place...then have a small, quiet gathering. By contrast, if Leo is located in the 1st house of your chart, an outward energy place...have a party! Don't have an astrology chart? Click here .

It is interesting to note when the current Moon is in the same sign as your birth Moon and to see how the flavor of that day carries through the following 30 days.

Current Planet Positions:
Sun - Cancer, until July 23
Mercury - Cancer, until July 2
Venus - Gemini, until July 4
Mars - Gemini, until Aug. 3
Jupiter - Taurus, until June 12, 2012
Saturn - Libra, until Oct. 6, 2012
Uranus - Aries, until Mar. 6, 2019
(Taurus, May 16, 2018-Nov. 7, 2018)
Neptune - Aquarius, until Feb. 4, 2012
(Pisces, Apr. 5-Aug. 5, 2011)

Note: Timeframes for Moon signs, void-of-course periods, and current planet & asteroid positions are noted for Eastern time zone (USA). Please adjust according to your own location. Times are not given if the void-of-course Moon occurs for a very short period or if it occurs during the night (based on same Eastern time zone).

* v/c = Void-of-Course - When the Moon is void-of-course, spend time working on projects already in progress, creative endeavors, or self-improvement. Void-of-course simply means that no planets are aspecting the Moon as it gets ready to change signs. It's best not to start new projects, sign important agreements, or go shopping when the Moon is void-of-course because the result will probably be unsatisfactory in some way.

** Mercury Retrograde - the speed of the planet slows down considerably. Communications, paperwork, electronics, and traffic can become very mixed-up or delayed during this time. A situation will be in the process of changing, so wait until Mercury is direct to finalize anything. In general, maintain a slower, more cautious pace in daily affairs. Always allow at least two days before (to slow down) and after (to resume regular activities) a Mercury retrograde period. Read More about Mercury Retrograde here

The Magic Staff

The Magic Staff

The magic staff is used in many Pagan traditions as a magical tool.

Many Pagans and Wiccans use a magical staff in rituals and ceremonies. While it's not a required magical tool, it can come in handy. The staff is typically associated with power and authority, and in some traditions only the High Priestess or High Priest carries one. In other traditions, anyone may have one. Much like the wand, the staff is considered symbolic of male energy, and usually is used to represent the element of Air (although in some traditions, it symbolizes Fire). Like other magical tools, the staff is something you can make yourself, with a little bit of effort. Here's how.

Choose a Stick

Search the woods for the stick that feels right to you, and use it to make your magic staff.
Image © Patti Wigington 2009

If you get a chance to go on a hike, while you're out there roaming around you should take the opportunity to look for a good piece of wood for a magical staff. Ideally, you'll want to find a piece of wood that has already fallen from a tree -- do NOT cut a piece of wood from a live tree just because you think it would make a nice staff. A magical staff is typically long enough that you can hold it comfortably in your hand, vertically, and have it touch the ground. Your best bet is to find one that is between shoulder height and the top of your head. Hold the stick to see how it feels in your hand -- if it's too long, you can always trim it down. When it comes to diameter, you should be able to comfortably wrap your fingers around it. A one- to two-inch diameter is best for most people, but again, hold it and see how it feels.
Some people choose a specific type of wood based upon its magical properties. For example, if you wished to have a staff connected to power and strength, you might select oak. Another person might choose to use Ash instead, as it is strongly tied to magical workings and prophecy. There's no hard and fast rule, however, that you have to use a certain type of wood -- many people make a staff out of the stick that "felt right" to them. In some magical systems, it is believed that a tree limb felled by a storm is imbued with a great deal of magical power.

Remove the Bark

Strip the bark from your stick, and lightly sand it until it is smooth.
Image © Patti Wigington 2009

To remove the bark from your stick, you can use a knife (not your athame, but a regular knife) to strip the bark. This will also help you to shape the staff, if there are small irregularities on it, or to remove excess bits of branches. With some varieties of wood, you may want to soak the staff so that the bark is wet, making it easier to strip off. Some types of wood, such as pine, are easy enough to strip the bark off by hand if you choose.
Use a piece of light-grained sandpaper, or steel wool, to sand the staff down until it is smooth.

Finish Your Staff

Consecrate your staff, and use it in rituals to raise energy.
Image © Getty Images

Once you've got the staff shaped and sanded, you have a couple of options. You may want to drill a small hole at the top so you can insert a leather thong -- this comes in handy when you're waving your magical staff around in ritual, because you can put the thong around your wrist and reduce the chances of accidentally flinging your staff across a room. If you like, you can also decorate your magical staff by carving or burning symbols of your tradition into it, adding crystals or beads, feathers, or other charms into the wood.

It's generally not considered necessary to use a polyurethane finish on the staff, and in many traditions it's believed that to put a synthetic finish on a staff will block the magical energies. However, some people choose to oil their staff to give it a light shine - if you do this, use an oil that is plant-based, rather than petroleum-based.

After your staff is complete, consecrate it as you would any other magical tool.

Lavender Sweet Water

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Lavender Sweet Water

Sir Hugh Platt's "special sweet water to perfume clothes, in the folding, being washed." Add a splash to the rinse water or sprinkling shirts and sheets before ironing and
you will sleep so peacefully! The lavender has a calming effect.

Ingredients:
100 drops (5 ml) lavender oil
5 drops peppermint oil*
1 1/2 fluid oz. (45 ml) vodka (highest proof available)
20 oz. distilled or still spring water

Blend the essential oils with the vodka in a small glass bowl. Stir well
to amalgamate. Pour water into a large glass bottle. Add oil mixture to
water. Please note: The linen water may be cloudy. This is normal and won't
stain linen. Shake bottle before you use it.

* Optional : Used to enhance and freshen lavender fragrance.

7 Almost Free Beauty Treatments

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Sat Jun 25, 2011 9:13 pm (PDT)

Every beauty expert keeps a well-stocked cupboard, and mine is overflowing with yummy scrubs, sweet-smelling oils and scrumptious masks for summer.

So is my kitchen pantry â€" and chances are yours is too.

It’s easy to dip into your fridge or cupboard, pull out fresh, healthy ingredients and make your own natural skin care remedies to soothe summer skin woes.

Here are 7 of my favorite recipes. They cost less than $3, smell great and are good enough to eat!

1. Tropical Treat for Feet
There’s no time like sandal season to indulge tired feet. In just a few minutes, mix an easy, effective, all-natural foot mask that will pamper and prettify those barking dogs.

Luscious papaya contains papain, a natural exfoliant that smoothes rough, scaly skin. Yogurt absorbs excess oil and cools skin. Honey is an antibacterial, mint reduces inflammation and relaxes tired muscles, while grapeseed oil is a light antioxidant moisturizer that’s easily absorbed into skin.

Ingredients
1/2 papaya, mashed
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1 teaspoon honey
1 teaspoon grapeseed oil (you can substitute vegetable oil or olive oil)
1 sprig fresh mint, leaves torn into small pieces

Preparation
1. Mix all ingredients by hand or in a blender.

2. Massage all over feet.

3. Slip each foot into a small plastic bag. After 10 minutes, rinse with cool water. Apply your favorite foot or body cream. Tropical Treat lasts about 5 days in the fridge.

Cost: $1.40

Tip: This mask can also be used to smooth and soften hands and face.

2. Aloe Skin Soother
In the Southwest, many people keep an aloe plant because the gel from the leaves soothes dry, irritated, or burned skin.

Aloe gel is an anti-inflammatory, rich in vitamins, minerals and enzymes. It has more than 99% water, which is why it’s so soothing.

Aloe is also a temporary skin-tightener, which makes this a great “mini-mask” when you’re prepping for a party or after a day at the beach, especially if you’ve had too much sun.

The optional lavender oil also soothes burns. Chamomile oil calms inflamed skin.

Ingredients
1/4 cup aloe gel (available at health food stores)
2 vitamin E capsules
1/2 teaspoon chamomile or lavender essential oil (optional)

Preparation
1. Keep aloe gel chilled in the refrigerator â€" where it’ll last about 4 weeks â€" because cold makes it more effective. When you’re ready to apply the mask, cut open the vitamin E capsules and mix contents with the aloe gel and essential oil.

2. Apply to a clean face and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse with cool water and moisturize.

Cost: $1.05

Tip: Aloe also reduces puffiness beneath eyes. Lie down for 5 minutes and gently pat back and forth on the under-eye area with your fourth finger. (It exerts the least pressure.)

3. Tuscan Face Glow
Olive oil isn’t only for eating. Since ancient Rome, it has been used in soaps, moisturizers, hair conditioners and body treatments.

“Liquid gold,” as it’s known in Italy, is loaded with antioxidants and oleic acid, which helps regenerate skin cells. It’s gentle enough for sensitive skin and so light that it won’t clog pores â€" even if your complexion is oily.

The orange (like other citrus fruit) contains citric acid, an exfoliant that loosens bonds between surface skin cells. Baking soda is a gentle scrub. Your skin will glow like you’re living La Dolce Vita!

Ingredients
1 small orange
1/4 cup cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil (cold-pressing retains more nutrients)
1 tablespoon baking soda (optional)

Preparation
1. Finely grate the zest of the orange (avoid the white pith). Combine with olive oil in a small glass, ceramic or stainless-steel bowl. Cut the orange in half and squeeze the juice into the olive oil mixture. Blend in the baking soda, if you like.

2. Gently massage in circular motion on clean skin, and rinse with cool water. Store this for 2 weeks at room temperature.

Cost: $1.32

Tip: To make your tresses soft and shiny, massage a dime-sized dab of olive oil into your palms and very lightly scrunch through your hair â€" especially on dry ends. Give hair a light blast with the blow-dryer to help the oil penetrate.

4. Nutty Sesame Body Scrub
Sesame is one of the most deeply penetrating and richly emollient oils. In India, it’s massaged into the scalp because it’s believed to prevent hair loss.

The salt in this recipe helps slough off dry, flaky skin, while the oil softens and nourishes dry, sun-parched skin. This recipe is modeled after a spice paste, a traditional cooking rub common in many cultures, including India, China and Mexico.

Ingredients
1 cup sesame seeds
1 cup sea or kosher salt
1/2-3/4 cup sesame oil (or sweet almond oil)

Preparation
1. Toast the sesame seeds at 350Ëš for 2 minutes to release the oil and make your scrub more fragrant. Using a mortar and pestle, crush the seeds with salt. Add oil.

2. Gently massage into your skin, from the neck down. Rinse off in the shower. Store it for up to six months out of direct sunlight.

Cost: $1.15

Tip: To revitalize skin and re-energize your body, massage the scrub as the pros do â€" from the tips of your fingers and toes toward the heart, to stimulate blood flow and increase circulation.

5. Egg-on-Your-Face Oily Skin Mask
There’s nothing as refreshing as the tart scent of lemon in the summer heat! This mask will cleanse and help clear oily skin.

The fruit’s citric acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid, which is a great exfoliant. The egg tightens and tones.

Citrus oils (grapefruit, lemon, orange, bergamot and neroli)) can make your skin more vulnerable to UV rays, so avoid the sun after applying them. Use this mask at night, before you sleep.

Ingredients
1 lemon
1 egg

Preparation
1. Slice the lemon in half. Scoop out enough pulp from one half to fit the egg yolk inside. Refrigerate the lemon-egg yolk overnight.

2. Apply the lemon-infused egg yolk to clean, dry skin, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Store this for 2-3 days in the refrigerator.

Cost: 36¢

Tip: To exfoliate flaky elbows, prepare both halves of the lemon as directed above. After you’ve used the yolk on your face, tuck an elbow in each half for five minutes, gently massage salt into the area, then rinse.

6. Sage Bath ‘Bacne’ Buster
When zits blossom on your back, wearing a bathing suit is embarrassing.

Sage is your go-to "bacne" buster. The herb’s antiseptic oil kills bacteria that cause acne; it also disinfects cuts, soothes skin irritations and controls excess oil secretion.

Ingredients
1 cup oatmeal
1/4 cup fresh or dried sage leaves
Muslin bag or cheesecloth square with a piece of string

Preparation
1. Fill the bag or place ingredients in the middle of the cheesecloth square.

2. Tie it closed with string and hang it under the faucet while warm bathwater fills the tub. (This softens oatmeal and releases the sage oils.)

3. Soak in the bath for 5-10 minutes, then remove the bag and gently press it against your back. Make a batch to store for up to 6 months.

Cost: $1.24

Tip: You can use this poultice to help control oil on the face or chest too.

7. Cool-As-a-Cuke Toner
Cucumber is a beauty classic. It cools and refreshes irritated skin and reduces mild swelling. It's also a great toner, gentle enough for all skin types.

Ingredients
1/2 cucumber (don’t peel) *
3 tablespoons distilled water
3 tablespoons witch hazel

Preparation
1. Put ingredients in the blender and pulse until smooth. Strain through cheesecloth to separate solid ingredients and pour the liquid into a container with a tight-fitting lid. Dab on to skin with a clean, soft cloth or cotton ball. Keep it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

*You can replace the cucumber with pomegranate juice. The fruit is a powerful antioxidant that slows down skin damage from sun or pollution and helps regenerate cells. It’s gentle enough for all skin types. If using pomegranate juice, simply pour all ingredients into a bottle or jar and shake well to combine.

Cost: 45¢ (with cucumber)

Tip: To soothe irritated or puffy eyes, cut two slices of cucumber, and lie down with a slice over each eye for five minutes.

Getting the Most Out of Your Herbs

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Sun Jun 26, 2011 12:17 am (PDT)

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR HERBS:

If you don't plan on using your herbs immediately,
try any of the following techniques to store them:

1. Remove leaves and blanch in boiling water for three seconds
and refrigerate or freeze. The herbs will retain their nice
green color and stay fresh.

2. Puree herbs in a blender/food processor with your favorite
oil and refrigerate or freeze.

3. Puree herbs with a small amount of water and freeze in ice
cube trays. Store ice cubes in a plastic bag in freezer and
add to soups, etc.
