Engines of Our Ingenuity

John Lienhard is a professor at the University of Houston where, as he states, We're interested in the way inventive minds work. He has put his own ingenuity to work by hosting a radio show on the Engines of Our Ingenuity and has posted the transcripts as well as the audio of the shows on his web site. You can search the episodes by keyword or topic; because Professor Lienhard has been broadcasting since 1988, these topics are many and varied. Naturally, each episode has additional links to other related Web resources. As you browse through this site youll be surprised and amazed (or maybe you wont) how man has shaped and keeps shaping the destiny of the world with his ingenuity.

SwarmSketch

Do you want to try your hand at art but are too self-conscious to reveal yourself on canvas? Well, here's your chance to join in on 'collective consciousness' without exposing your entire innermost self. "SwarmSketch is an ongoing online canvas that explores the possibilities of distributed design by the masses. Each week it randomly chooses a popular search term which becomes the sketch subject for the week. In this way, the collective is sketching what the collective thought was important each week. . . . Each user can contribute a small amount of line per visit, then they are given the opportunity to vote on the opacity of lines submitted by other users." This voting process keeps one individual from dominating the work, also making the outcome collective. Past sketches are posted as well animations of the history of the lines, allowing one to view the sketch as it was being created – fascinating when one considers the number of users who input the lines. This site can become addictive so give yourself plenty of time for exploration and browsing as well as drawing!

The Sacred Spiral Dance

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Mon Jun 13, 2011 7:32 pm (PDT)

The Sacred Spiral Dance

The Sacred Spiral Dance is the eternal dance of the One Heart.

The Sacred Spiral Dance is of profound significance since it is the map of our journey into the Greater Love. During this Dance, we move in two spirals towards a central point. Together we form the patterning of the One Heart. Our partner in the spiral opposite us
represents both our True Love and our Lover from Beyond the Stars.

When we meet our partner in the center, the two become One. Then as our newly formed One Being moves out of the center into the Spaces-In-Between the two incoming spirals, we have entered the passageway
to the Greater Love. At the end of the Dance, we have all joined together as One Vaster Being in the Greater Love. When the Sacred
Spiral Dance is truly mastered, you will notice a sparkling iridescence in the air and perceive each of the two spirals as triple overlays. This is the sign that you have totally immersed
yourselves into the Spaces-In-Between.

Instructions for the Sacred Spiral Dance:

Part One: Moving into Position (without music)

Choose a partner who represents your Lover from Beyond the Stars.
Now form one long double line of all the partners facing the same
direction along the edge of your room.

You now have two long, single lines. The leading couple begin a slow
walk in a clockwise direction, lifting each knee to hip height, placing each foot softly on the floor in a diagonal position
pointing outwards. This walk is done in unison with a gently flowing motion from side to side. Each dancer tries to place their feet in
the exact spaces previously occupied by the dancer in front of them,
further strengthening the One Being. Everyone's hands are still in prayer position in front of their hearts.

Halfway across the room / space, the first dancer of the outer line of dancers will stop and face inwards with the rest of his line
doing the same. The inside line continues on with the slow, flowing step until the first dancer reaches the point exactly opposite
their partner. The inside line then stops and faces inwards. The two
single lines will form two elongated spirals beginning on the right
of the first couple.

As the partners in the opposite spirals align with each other, they
slowly open into the One Heart where they remain for the rest of the
Dance. From this point onwards until we reach the outer circle of the Greater Love, we will only look at our partner.

The Sacred Spiral Dance begins:

1. As the music starts to play, the first couple begins the dance by moving in a clockwise direction, always remaining totally focused on
their partner. The actual step is one of raising the left leg and moving it to the left with a smooth dipping motion. Then bringing
the right foot in towards the left. This is followed by a pause of
random length which is determined by the lead couple of this dance. Since one of the purposes of this Dance is to take us into the
Spaces-In-Between, (the Greater Reality), our steps will not necessarily follow the beats of the music. This necessitates that
each spiral aligns as One Being. We need to feel as though there was an invisible connecting us to the dancers on both sides of us. If we
do this, we will automatically take a step to the left each time the person on our left moves.

2. The two lines of dancers slowly spiral into the center, being careful to leave sufficient space between the incoming spirals to
create the Spaces-In-Between.

3. When the first couple reaches the center of the spiral, they lightly touch fingertips. Then, remaining together at the fingertips, the two become One Being and reverse direction,
spiraling outwards in a counterclockwise manner within the Spaces-In-Between the ingoing spirals of dancers.

4. As each couple enters the center point, they touch fingertips, becoming One Being and follow the first couple spiraling outwards
counterclockwise in the Spaces-In-Between. This outwards spiraling continues until you have reached the outside of the two ingoing
spirals.

5. As the first couple arrives at the outside of the Dance, they form the beginning of a new outer circle by linking little fingers
of one hand and facing inwards while continuing the sideways dance step in a counterclockwise fashion, keeping their arms upraised at
the sides with palms forward. They are thus forming the circle of the Greater Love.

6. Each couple who arrives at the outside of the Dance, joins with the outer circle by linking themselves together with their little
fingers. Once you are in the circle of the Greater Love, you can now look at everyone in the outer circle, experiencing the fullness of the Greater Love.

7. This continues until everyone is in the outer circle. The last couple closes and completes the circle by linking little fingers with the first person in the outer circle.

8. Now the Sacred Spiral Dance moves to a new level of sublime ecstasy as you continue dancing counterclockwise as one
synchronized, organic whole.

9. From this point until the end of the tape of music, you can create your own variations to the Dance. One movement is to gently
dance into the core of the One Heart and slowly dance out again still joined by our little fingers. You can also stop dancing and
stand quietly with arms upraised & fingers joined. (This serves as a powerful anchoring of the Greater Love.) It's important that you
maintain the subtle focus of this dance by keeping it slow and quiet. There's often so much energy that it's easy to get rowdy at
this point and disperse all the energy. But if you can keep it deep and subtle, you will be triggered into sublime ecstasy.

10. If it feels appropriate, you can drop hands and move into free form, ecstatic dancing, feeling your entire being now fully anchored
in the Spaces-In-Between.

Standing Stones Midsummer Ritual

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Mon Jun 13, 2011 7:37 pm (PDT)

Standing Stones Midsummer Ritual

Before the rite make up a small cloth pouch filled with herbs such as lavender, chamomile, St. John's wort, vervain, or any of the Midsummer herbs listed in "An Herbal Grimoire." Mentally pour all your troubles, problems, pains, sorrows and illnesses, if any, into petition as you construct it. Tie it shut with a red string. Place this on the altar for use during the rite. The cauldron should also be there or nearby. Even if you use candles to mark the quarters, the red candle in a holder should also be on the altar. For outdoor rituals, light a fireâ€" however smallâ€"and drop the pouch into this.

Arrange the altar, light the candles and censer, and cast the Circle of Stones.

Recite the Blessing Chant.

Invoke the Goddess and God.

Stand before the altar and say, with wand upraised:

I celebrate the noon of summer with mystic rites.
O great Goddess and God,
all nature vibrates with your energies
and the Earth is bathed with warmth and life.
Now is the time of forgetting past cares and banes;
Now is the time for purification.
O fiery Sun,
burn away the unuseful,
the hurtful,
the bane,
in your omnipotent power.
Purify me!
Purify me!
Purify me!
Lay the wand on the altar. Take up the herbal petition and light it in the red candle on the altar (or, if outdoors, the ritual fire).
When it is burning, drop it into the cauldron (or some other heat-proof container) and say:
I banish you by the powers of the Goddess and God!
I banish you by the powers of the Sun, Moon and Stars!
I banish you by the powers of Earth, Air, Fire and Water!
Pause, seeing the hurts and pains burning into nothingness; Then say:
O Gracious Goddess, O Gracious God,
on this night of Midsummer magic
I pray that you charge my life with
wonder and joy. Help me in attuning with
the energies adrift on the enchanted night air.
I give thanks..
Reflect upon the purification you have undergone. Feel the powers of nature flowing through you, washing you clean with divine energy.

Works of magic, if necessary, may follow.

Celebrate the Simple Feast.

The circle is released.

Midsummer Lore: Midsummer is practically the classic time to perform magics of all kinds. Healings, love magic and protections are especially suitable. Herbs can be dried over the ritual fire if you're celebrating outdoors. Leap the fire for purification and renewed energy. Fresh fruits are standard fare for Midsummer.

Tarot Cards of Patience

Tarot Cards of Patience
A guide to their meaning

by Psychic Nunu

"I am Neo in The Matrix. Bullets soar at me, yet with a wave of my hand, they slow and freeze. I am able to pluck them from mid-air, and shoo them to the side like metal flies. I alter time. I am stealthy. I am way cool."

Such is the concept of the 12th card in the Major Arcana: The Hanged Man. The Hanged Man represents meditation, sacrifice, foresight, insight, decisions - but most of all, suspension of one's self over issues.
Okay. I am not Keanu Reeves, and I am not the chosen one in a blockbuster hit movie. However, I do have the ability to suspend myself in the proverbial air, and let my conflicts fall to the ground. Which ones do I pick up and choose to deal with? Which ones stay on the ground for another day? Which ones do I abandon altogether?

The Hermit is a man who has chosen to forfeit life with men, in order to live in solitude. We never see him in his home, though we assume it's a shack, a cave - or under a bridge. He is always on the move. Carrying his lantern and staff, like Gandalf, he seeks knowledge and goes wherever his light and staff lead him. Drawing the Hermit in a reading tells us that it's time to take pause, take stock, and get clarity. It's a time for thinking - not doing. Inverted, the Hermit suggests someone who is hiding, in retreat, or forced into withdrawal.

The 14th card of the Major Arcana is Temperance. In my deck it features an angel carefully mixing the contents of two earthen pots. One contains the bluest of waters - and in the other, there is fire. These two elements, if thrown together, will cancel each other. However, in the proper proportions, the angelic alchemist will make the most astonishing balance of the two. He creates an amazing violet atmosphere that surrounds him. Because of his steady hand and head, the angel shows us that staying calm and cool creates something amazing. The Temperance card may represent balance, moderation and living at ease. In Temperance, we see the impossible become possible with well thought-out plans and patiently carried out application.

I had a very interesting experience in June. I was at lunch with a vexingly beautiful friend who is always being approached. A super-hot tattooed guy approached our table, and she started to fluff her hair. He turned to me - a shoot-down for my gal-pal - and remarked, "Excuse me, but do you tell people's fortunes?" (Of course, the "Crazy Lady" neon sign I carry was on - duh!). Anyway, I let him sit with us for a bit and then he remarked, "I won't take up ya'll's time, I just want to know the sign of the man I'm supposed to be with." (Oh, well... strike two).

"Well, I don't usually carry a deck..." I started to protest. But since I had that neon sign, of course I had the deck. I relented and got out the cards. The ones I threw for this guy were the Hermit - and Temperance. Then I did a spread, and laid out 12 cards, one for each month of the year. In the 9th month I had the King of Cups - and in the 11th month, the Emperor. "Well, we have a Virgo and a Sag here," I told him. "See, the Hermit here is Tarot's Virgo, and the King of Cups is in September. The Temperance card is ruled by Sagittarius, and the Emperor is in November."

"Well," the guy responded, "Since I am a Sag, I guess that means I need to hunt Virgos."

"Not only that," I pointed out, "but the Hermit and Temperance cards are telling you something more important: you need to chill! Take your time."

Consecrated Cloth Divination

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Mon Jun 13, 2011 7:45 pm (PDT)

Consecrated Cloth Divination

Divination provides an important glimpse of your path before it unfolds fully. Most divinatory tools, such as tarot cards, respond better if laid out upon a properly consecrated cloth rather than on a bare table.

You may use a plain cloth or one with markings for a specific system. To consecrate your cloth, first spread it flat. Lay out all your cards on it in order. Now say:

Tools of power,
Tools of art,
Tools that see the hidden heart,
Tools that tell the path before
Be you blessed by ancient lore.

Wrap the cloth around the deck, and continue:

Now together be you bound
Cards and cloth that wraps around
One in two, and two in one,
By these words my will be done!

The cloth is now consecrated. Keep it wrapped around your deck when not in use.

Q & A:  How Long Does IT Take for a Spell to Work?

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Mon Jun 13, 2011 7:48 pm (PDT)

Question: How Long Does it Take for a Magic Spell to Work?

I cast my first spell two nights ago, and I don't know if it worked or not. How long does this stuff take, anyway?

Answer:
Depending on who you ask, the answer is usually anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. In nearly all Wiccan and Pagan traditions, the general rule of thumb is that if you haven't seen something begin to manifest within four weeks -- one lunar cycle -- then you may need to revisit your working. In other traditions, particularly in Hoodoo and rootwork, a spell is designed to be worked over a specific period of time, and then results should appear within a designated amount of time after the working is complete.
Bear in mind that sometimes you get results that aren't what you were expecting, and in that case, you might need to evaluate the method you used to cast the spell in the first place.
A good idea is to keep a magical journal of some sort. Record what you did, when you did it, what the circumstances were, etc. Jot down everything that happens, so that you can look back later and see if it has begun to manifest.

Creating Magical Staffs

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Mon Jun 13, 2011 7:49 pm (PDT)

Creating Magickal Staffs

The staff and the wand are to common and important tools of several crafts,
including shamanism, Wicca, Witchcraft, Oriental religious practices, and
most native magick from around the world. The staff is a representation of
the world tree, a symbol used in ALL religion - including (believe it or
not) biblical religions. When you meditate, or go into trance, having your
staff to lean on can enhance your journey by connecting the wood in the
staff to the universal spirit of the world tree. For the Wiccans and
Witches, the wand is a miniature version of the world-tree staff - it is
commonly used to assist in casting circle and directing energy. Some use
crystal wands, or wands made of different metals - these work and feel much
different, since they are not connected to the world tree. The non-wooden
wands connect to the mineral world, and are used for people who connect more
to the lower world and work with earth spirits, such as the fairy, sprites,
and nymphs.

There are unlimited variations on staffs and wands - I will describe here
just one way that I happen to like very much and found to be very powerful
when working in the shamanic context. This is by no means the 'only' way -
always use a way that is comfortable for you. Use any ideas you wish and
combine them with what works for you - everyone works differently.

The technique used here may be especially good for those running a coven or
a group - it can be used as an achievement system to visually and magically
show a persons experience level.

The Staff:

You will need to collect a few things together before starting this
project - they are: a wooden staff of a comfortable length, some leather
scraps, some leather or sinew straps (or heavy string or twine), some epoxy
or other durable and waterproof glue, some lacquer or wood finish, some
pretty feathers, and wood working tools such as chisels or Dremel tools. You
don't need to be a gifted wood carver to make your staff unique - if you
don't feel comfortable carving wood, you can either cut designs into the
staff or you can epoxy a finial-type decoration on the top of your staff. If
you are going to use a finial, skip step number two.

Step 1. Prepare your staff for a long time of use and honor the wood.

The staff you choose should ideally be some sort of hard wood, or cedar
(pine tends to leak sap and rot after just a few months) - you can get a
piece of wood for a staff from any renaissance festival, a construction site
where new housing is going up (find a cut down sapling), or even a hardware
store (closet poles can work just fine). If you go scouting in the woods for
a fallen tree, be careful that the wood is not starting to rot - if you get
a tree branch, the tree should be newly fallen. When you find your piece,
clean it of all the branches and bring it home. Light some incense and
seal the aura of the wood - clutch it tightly and empower it with your
essence. Give a ritual to the wood, and make it a place of honor in your
heart - this wood will be your companion for a long time.

You can cut down a sapling for your staff, but there is a process to it that
is very important to follow. Many people do not like to cut down saplings
that are alive, since we already have a hard enough time keeping the forests
safe - though there is a good method for this that the Native Americans of
the East coast tribes used (according to several books anyway). First, go
into the forest and take a full day looking for the perfect sapling - it
should stand about ten feet high, be very straight, and have few branches on
it. Go to the tree, and meditate with it - let it know that it has been
selected for an Earth empowering and sacred task. Give the tree an
offering - usually tobacco. Remember were the tree is, and leave. Over the
next several weeks, come into the forest and visit the tree - get to really
know it while it is still alive and growing. Become familiar with the
section of forest that it calls home. Visit during the day and night, during
the sun and rain, during the heat and the cold - each time you visit, leave
another offering for it. Also, pay respects to the trees surrounding your
tree - also let them know that you will be taking their companion soon, and
that it will be for a sacred and honored task. After a while, you will know
when the time is right to actually take the tree. Go into the forest, and
cut the sapling as quickly and painlessly as possible - a hand axe should
fell the sapling in two or three blows. Take the sapling and remove the
branches - cut a section that you will be using for the actual staff
(usually a good part is from a foot above the stump spanning 5 feet up).
Take the remaining and unused parts of the sapling and arrange them around
the freshly cut stump. Give offerings to the stump, and to the surrounding
trees - give an oath so that the forest knows that this is for a good and
sacred cause. You should leave with the blessings from the forest.

Step 2. Carve the staff and mark it with your energy

If you are not good at carving, or can't for some reason, you can drill a
hole in the top and put a finial on it (a finial is the decorative piece
used for the ends of curtain rods). Otherwise, get either some chisels, a
pocket knife, or a Dremel tool and carve the top into a symbol or icon that
represents you. I personally like the Dremel tool best, and can carve easily
with it. Carve whatever you wish - a goddess head, a dragon, a wolf, a
rabbit, whatever. If you don't want to carve a 3D sculpture, symbols will
work fine as well - such as Ogham, Runic, Witches Runic, English, or just
random symbols. So long as it represents you, it is fine - in case of a
horrible mistake, I usually make the staff extra long so I can chop the top
off and start over. If you get it right the first time, chop the bottom off
to make the height correct. Whatever you do, make sure to sand it thoroughly
after you are done - this will help the wood to stay more durable.

Step 3. Treat the wood

Take the lacquer that you purchased and give the staff several thin coats.
Many people do not like the shiny look on their staff and don't coat it - I
have to recommend against this, since it will prevent long-term outdoor use.
If you have a camp out, and bring your staff, the morning dew will start to
rot your staff. If you don't want the shiny look, get a matte finish.
Outdoor porch and patio finish (Water Seal®, Thompsons®, Sears®, etc.) work
very well. If you used a light color wood, you may even want to stain it
first - you can be creative with your staining, using green or red, or using
multiple wood type stains together (giving a natural tie-dye effect).

Step 4. Decorate the staff.

Next, take the scraps of leather you collected and wrap them anywhere you
see fit on the staff - like to just wrap a section towards the top of the
staff - some like making runners and fringes on the staff. Take the leather
or twine straps and let at least twelve of them hang off the staff - these
will be used to collect totems over the years, so you will need a few. Using
different color pieces of leather can make a nice effect. Below are some
examples you can use for ideas.

Step 5. Add your first totems

The straps hanging from the staff are to hold major totems and gifts that
signify achievements. These totems should not be arbitrary - they should
have deep meaning to you and represent major developments in your craft.
When you first make the staff, take an item that shows your experience up to
this point - if you wear a pagan symbol for a necklace, and have been
wearing it for several months, this would be a great start. Some people
change their necklace about every 6 months to a year, and these make great
stepping stones - when you see them, you can easily remember your state of
mind from the time you took it off and put it on the staff. The necklaces
are also something that has constant intimate contact with you, and journeys
through life with you at all times while you wear it. Other things that
would be appropriate are: anything you find you get as a gift during major
rituals, things you find from your animal guides, gifts from friends and
spiritual group members (especially teachers).

FOR COVENS: This can be a great achievement systems for group members - as
they reach various 'levels', they can receive items for their staff - when a
coven member sees a fellow coven member with a very full staff, they know
that the person has a good amount of experience (similar to the medals that
generals wear, or even merit badges in the scouts).

Your staff is now your magical companion, and should always go with you to
all magical functions. As time goes on, it will keep collecting your magical
essence, and become a very powerful tool for you. As many years go by, and
the staff becomes old and worn, it will be like an old friend - you can also
go through the collection of medallions on it and keep past experiences
alive and in the present.

Household Spirits

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

HOUSEHOLD SPIRITS

There was once a general belief that spirits or fairies dwell in human homes,
guarding them and occasionally undertaking domestic tasks in return for small
rewards, such as a bowl of cream or a warm place by the hearth.

Such spirits are found throughout the world, from Hawaii to Scotland, from
Spain to Russia. A belief in house spirits is very ancient. The ancient
Romans honored protective brownie-like spirits called lares and penates.
They gave monthly offerings of garlands on the hearth and daily offerings of
food. In return, these spirits protected the house and its wealth. Ovid
portrayed the lares as similar to dogs--he said that both guard the house and
are faithful to their masters. The penates, meanwhile, were depicted in
idols made of wax or ivory and placed on special shrines in the house. They
were worshipped along with the domestic goddess Vesta and were responsible
for the house's food supply and the success of the harvest.

The lares and penates also played a wider role in Roman society. The penates
publici were the protectors of the Roman state and were worshipped in a state
cult. There was also a public cult of the lares vicinales, or "neighborhood
lares."

The annual feast of the lares was the Compitalia. It was celebrated soon
after the Winter Solstice, when merrymaking accompanied the performance of
theatrical farces. Some elements of the festivals gave rise to later
Christmas customs. The Compitalia called for the use of artificial light,
and the lares traditional sacrificial victim was the pig--sometimes a
traditional Christmas fare.

Though some Victorian writers claimed that the concept of household spirits
may have spread with the Roman Empire, there is enough evidence to prove that
a belief in such spirits evolved independently in places as far apart as
China, western Europe, and South America. Folklore tells us that house
fairies were once a common feature of English domestic life. In the twelfth
century, a spirit called Malekin caused a commotion in the Suffolk home of
Sir Osborn de Bradwell by discoursing learnedly in Latin on scriptural
subjects. In Persia and China, it was the custom to make offerings to the
house spirit before entering a dwelling. In northern Europe, it is customary
to take bread and salt when visiting a home. In many parts of the world,
blood sacrifices were made to the spirit of the place whenever foundations
were laid for a building. Animals or even human victims were buried alive
under the cornerstones to provide protective spirits.

Today, house fairies often have a mischievous side and like to play tricks on
the human inhabitants of a dwelling. Such pranks might include rattling the
fire irons, smashing crockery, hiding objects, or making a mes.s House
fairies are easily offended. Some house fairies object to the presence of a
cat or a god, and most of them will disappear for good if given a suit of
clothes.

Fairies are much associated with he domestic hearth. The hearth was once the
central focus of the home, providing warmth and food. House fairies, such as
brownies, may be derived from an ancient belief in household gods or spirits
that protected the home. The hearth was their means of entrance and egress,
their shrine and altar flame. They often try to gain access to a house in
order to warm themselves by it and are angered if they are kept out. Some
fairy homes lie beneath human hearths, and the hearthstones are their doors.

Zapped by Emotional Vampires

Zapped by Emotional Vampires
How to spot them
by Kathi Calahan

You dread meeting them for lunch, but go anyway. Hours later you're exhausted, have a headache and find yourself making weak excuses to run for your life. You've just been zapped by an emotional vampire.
No, they don't actually drain the blood from your neck (although you may have a stiff neck by the time you flee), but they do drain the joy from your life and remove any desire you have to spend any more time with them. No wonder you're dazed and confused. No wonder you don't feel good around them!
Emotional vampires do their best energetically to suck the life force right out of you (and everyone else)! Whether it's subconsciously or on purpose, these are the kinds of people who hunt for victims to energize them simply because they can't (or won't) tap into their own spiritual energy source for revitalization.
So what do they look like?

Portrait of an emotional (or energetic) vampire
Beyond their chronic bad moods and boring retelling of the same (often dramatic) stories, emotional vampires are the sort who always seemed to be depressed (or angry) - to the point where you suspect they may like it. These conversation dominators (who have no issue talking over you - or anyone else who tries to get a word in edgewise), seem to happily play the role of the victim. In other words, nothing is ever their fault and life just seems to happen to them as if they had no part in the things they're forever complaining about.

Emotional vampires have negative things to say about everyone and everything and make a habit of telling you all about their problems and pet peeves - without showing any interest in yours. Should you be lucky enough to interject more than a nod into the conversation, they'll always find a way to change the subject back to themselves... even if it means switching gears when you're in the middle of a thought. Finally, they never know when to go home. Emotional vampires have no clue when they've overstayed their welcome - or worn you thin.

How you know you've been zapped!
Almost anyone can take a certain amount of anything - energetic bloodsucking included - which may be why we often question if there really is a problem with these people, or if we're just too sensitive. Here are the telltale signs you've been zapped!

If you were anxious or upset at the beginning of your conversation, you'll probably feel worse after time spent with one of these dour drainers. Emotional vampires don't offer empathy or try to soothe the people around them, instead they find ways to provoke your angst even further. During your conversation, you may even get the psychic feeling of phantom tentacles reaching out from their body to yours!

Likewise, you may experience increased insomnia or wonder where your anxiety build up is coming from without being able to pin-point the cause. And if you were feeling just fine before you sat down with them, you may find yourself irked by their constant need to focus on your insecurities and bring them to the forefront when they were on the back burner.

How to protect yourself
For starters, don't feel too bad - emotional vampires walk into any room and suck the life energy from anyone unlucky enough to enter their personal space. In fact, if you don't walk into their space, it's likely that they'll scan the room for a victim and walk into yours.

Some emotional vampires know what they are doing; others do it on an unconscious level. Those who are unaware tend to have very difficult relationships, home lives and work interactions until they recognize what they are doing. Those who know they're doing it... well, better steer clear than try to understand.
Either way, in order to protect yourself from their bloodletting, you have two options. First, you can tell them the truth: that you cannot get a word in edgewise and that the relationship feels one-sided to you. Let them know what you want from them. They'll either wake up or move on.

Second, if that doesn't work (or you've tried it before... over and over again), avoid them and do not spend any more time with them. If you must interact for work reasons or at family gatherings, set good time boundaries and don't stay with them any longer than you have to. And don't let them corner you - keep circulating... It's not your job to bring the cold and lifeless back from the dead!

It's because it's all just the devil in disguise don'tyaknow... it's why you can't have a logical conversation with them if this is their mindset.

I'm reminded of some of the conversations I had with my mother after I came out of the broom closet. She asked me, in all sincerity and full of concern, how I knew the deity I prayed to was really the one I thought it was. How did I know that it wasn't just the devil in a pleasant face pretending to be someone else?

I turned the question around and asked her the same thing.

She didn't have an answer other than, "I just do."

So I just looked at her, and waited, and she got really quiet.

HI Trish,

I would love to meet up with others of like mind, but we were talking about Salem, Missouri and I think you meant Salem, Mass. Also, I left Salem in the early 60's and have been in a lot of other places since then. I now live at the foot of Mt. Shasta in California, and would not be able to get east. Too bad a connection was not possible when I lived in Annapolis, MD--that would have been doable.

Americans United Urges Louisiana Legislators To Reject Ten Commandments Display At State Capitol
Display Of Religious Symbol Would Be Divisive And Could Lead To A Lawsuit, Church-State Watchdog Group Says
June 14, 2011
The Baton Rouge Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State has urged the state Senate to reject a bill calling for the display of the Ten Commandments at the state capitol.
A government-sponsored religious display such as this, says the AU affiliate, would divide Louisiana residents and possibly lead to litigation.
"The Louisiana state government should not meddle in religious matters," said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United. "If legislators want an educational display about the law at the capitol, I'd recommend they put up a monument to the Bill of Rights."

Thank you Jackie. Below is a copy of the e-mail I sent to the group when this happened. It makes me so sad to read it, but looking at the pictures of her make my heart swell with love.

<<<<<<On the night of June 2, Dark Moon, my daughter Amber was admitted to the hospital. She was 5 and a half months pregnant and hemorrhaging badly. We were told that if the baby was born, she would not live. I did a one-card Tarot reading. The card was "The Hanged Man." I knew that this meant a sacrifice, one life for another. Of course I knew that this would more than likely be the baby, since it was Dark Moon, Hekate's time. Early on the morning of June 3, Amber's blood pressure dropped to 59/28, and she was rushed to the OR where the doctors performed an emergency C-section.

Amber was resuscitated twice during this time. They had discussed the imminent outcome with us, and Amber told them that she didn't want the baby to suffer needlessly only to live for a day or two. They didn't perform any "heroic" measures for the baby. They told us she was a fighter as she breathed on her own for nearly an hour before returning to the Summerland. She weighed 1 lb. 4 oz. and was 10 1/2 inches long. We didn't get to hold her before she left us, and I am angry about that. They told us she was held and comforted by the nurses, and I wondered why w couldn't have held her and loved her for the brief time she was here.

When I got to hold her about an hour after that, she was still warm. She looked like a baby doll, so tiny and beautiful. She had a little smile on her face. I have never felt pain like that. One of the things I remember most is being in Amber's room with the fetal monitor attached to her, listening to Hannah's heartbeat all night long, thinking, how will I survive this? How will Amber get through it, after feeling the baby inside her, moving around and kicking, only to lose her? Four of Amber's sisters and the baby's father and I were with her throughout that day, grieving with her. When she was finally ready to hold the baby, her grief was so strong that I didn't think she could be comforted. I don't see how she got through that day, and the days to come. I don't think I could have done it.

Hannah's memorial service and funeral were on June 12. Somehow we survived it. I have been in a kind of fog, and I don't think I am entirely out of that fog yet. I cry every night grieving for that little baby and thinking about how she touched all of us with her brief presence here on Earth. She is truly with the Goddess now.

I have posted some pictures of the family in the Photos section of the 13Witches page under "Lady Nightshayde's Clan." This may seem macabre to some, but her pictures are truly beautiful.

I'd like to ask you to please light a candle for Amber and Tony, and for baby Hannah Marie, and for the rest of our family.

Blessed Be,
Lady Nightshayde>>>>>
