What is Kitchen Witchery

Subject: What is Kitchen Witchery?
Date: Saturday, June 11, 2011, 8:33 PM

What is Kitchen Witchery?:

In the Kitchen Witch's Best Natural Skin Recipe for a Younger Skin - she mentions incorporating Kitchen Witch lore/magic into all your doings in the Kitchen.

There's a growing movement within modern Paganism known as kitchen witchery. The kitchen is, after all, the heart and hearth of many modern households. When you have a gathering in your home, where do most of your guests hang out? Why, the kitchen, of course! Also, thanks to a declining economy, many more people are making meals from scratch and the kitchen has once again become a place where people spend hours, rather than minutes. So it's no surprise that kitchen witchery has seen a rise in popularity.

Meal Prep as Magic:

When you take the time to put meals together from the basic ingredients, you have a magical opportunity at hand. You can infuse every dish with intent and will. A meal can stop being something you dump out of a can, and start being a ritual in and of itself. When you take time to prepare something with your own hands, that lends it sacredness, and will make you want to spend time savoring it with your family, rather than just snarfing it down on your way out the door to soccer practice. By changing the way you view food, its preparation and its consumption, you can craft some practical magic at its simplest level.

How To Bring Magic Into the Kitchen:

As you become more aware of what it's like to live magically, and more in tune with your own actions and activities, you may at some point realize that your kitchen is a magical one. There are a number of things you can do to enhance the magical atmosphere in your kitchen. Try some or all of these to get started:
a.. Have a kitchen alter. The stovetop is today's equivalent of the hearth fires of old, and it's where most food preparation is done. Create a small altar with items that can be moved as needed -- add a statue of a home or hearth goddess, a cauldron, or a candle. If you like, paint a trivet with symbols of your tradition.

b.. Make sure your herbs are readily accessible. If you cook with them, display them in decorative jars. Make sure that they're not sitting in direct sunlight, though, or they'll lose their potency. If possible, have live plants in pots to use during the year. Keep fresh vegetables on hand as well.

c.. Read up on practices like Feng Shui so you can optimize your work space for maximum efficiency, both spiritual and practical.

d.. Keep the space clean. Much like any other sacred space, physical cleanliness maintains spiritual cleanliness. It's hard to find balance in a place that is cluttered and chaotic. Make sure counter tops are wiped down after each meal, keep the sink free of dirty dishes, and organize cupboards and shelves so they are easy to use.

e.. Paint the Walls in colors that are comforting and happy. If your house still has the 1970's metallic flecked wallpaper in the kitchen, it's time to get it out of there. Choose a color that makes you and your family feel good -- earth tones are soothing, yellows are happy and bright, and greens bring prosperity and abundance.

f.. Keep cookbooks and recipes organized where you can find them. You might even want to have a special book of magical recipes that you keep separate from your regular Book of Shadows.

You can also incorporate magical practices into your cooking. Consider some of these:
a.. When stirring a recipe, stir in a deosil or widdershins direction, depending on the goal you wish to achieve.

b.. If you're making a sandwich, spread condiments like mustard in a sigil for your purpose.

c.. When you bake bread, add herbs or spices that correspond to your magical needs.

Although kitchen witchery is rapidly becoming a popular term, it's hardly a new concept. Get your kitchen clean and organized, and you'll be well on your way to a successful path as a kitchen witch!

Bright Blessings

What's Happening Today:

St. Anthony of Padua - The St Anthony, a 13th century scholar and preacher, is now invoked to find lost property, as in this flippant rhyme:

Tony, Tony, look around
Something's lost that must be found

Like Saint Onuphrius (see June12), he also helps women find rich husbands, if they burn a candle on his day and say this prayer:

Sant Antoni beneit Blessed St Antony,
Feu-me trobar un marit Make me find a husband
Que sigui bon home i ric Who is a good man and rich,
I, si pot ser, de seguit And if possible right away.

Apparently he also helps men with potency problems, as Reginald Scot reports in his a chapter on Popish and magical cures the story of a woman who not being satisfied with her husband's readiness, make a wax likeness of his member and placed it on St Anthony's altar, asking that it be in be more courageous and of better disposition and ability.

He is also the patron of horses, Padua (where he resided for some time) and the poor.

In the Vodou tradition, he is associated with Ogun (Dragonslayer), the Wild Man of the Woods, Architect, Builder of Civilizations and God of Iron.

Blackburn, Bonnie and Leofranc, Holford-Strevens, The Oxford Book of Days, Oxford University Press, 2000
Teish, Luisah, Jambalaya, Harper & Row 1985

Lesser Quinquatrus - In ancient Rome, this was the start of a three day festival during which the guild of pipers (who played for sacrifices, funerals and feasts) celebrated with drinking, roaming the streets, dressing in masks and women's clothes and singing. The festivities began at the Temple of Minerva who (as Athena) invented the pipes.

Today's Goddess:  Epona Feast of Epona (Gaul)

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Sun Jun 12, 2011 8:47 pm (PDT)

Today's Goddess:  Epona
Feast of Epona (Gaul)

Themes:  Protection of Animals; Especially those who serve humankind.
Symbol:  A horse

About Epona:  Epona protects the creatures who faithfully keep humans company.  This pre-Roman Gaulish goddess is nearly always shown riding or lovingly feeding a horse and accompanied by a dog--these are her two sacred animals.

Also sometimes depicted with corn in her lap and carrying a goblet, Epona inspires love, fertility, and providence in your life.  In some myths, Epona appeared to acknowledge a king's sovereignty, giving her leadership qualities that can help you when you need more authority in a situation.

To Do Today:  To generate a little more providence in your life, eat corn today.  Say a silent prayer to Epona, asking her to saturate your food with her power, then consume it to internalize the energy.

If you have a pet, consider blessing it today.  To do this, find a small silver charm of a horse or a dog (like those from charm bracelets).  This image invokes Epona's protection.  Alternatively, use a little bell and draw the image of a horse or dog on it.

Hold the token cupped in your hands.  Visualize it filled with glittery white light and say,

Epona, watch over _______ (fill in the name of the animal).
Keep them safe and healthy no matter where they may be.

Put the charm on the animal's collar, cage, or in its bedding.

EPONA
Ancient Celtic Goddess of Abundance who cared for all horses. She was the daughter of a mare and a man
and was able to assume human or equine form. Her legend spread from Gaul throughout all the lands
and was even adopted by the Romans. She is riding in front of a wall with an ancient stone carving of
herself found in Beihingen, Germany.

Omens of the Witch's Brew

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Sun Jun 12, 2011 8:47 pm (PDT)

Omens of the Witch's Brew
Author Unknown

If a Witch's brew continues to boil after it has been removed from the fire,
it is said to be a sign that the Witch will live to be a ripe old age! This
omen originated in Europe in the Middle Ages.

A quarrel with a friend or family member is portended if a Witch's brew
should accidentally be spilled on the carpet. However, it is said to be a
sign of good luck to accidentally spill some upon yourself.

It is bad luck to brew philtres for love when the moon is in a waning phase
or during the time know as the dark of the moon. The ideal time is during a
waxing moon, especially on Valentine's day.

If two Witches stir the same brew, they will be stirring up strife,
according to an old superstitious belief from England. If they both drink it
from the same cup, it will bring them bad luck unless they are married or
hand fasted to each other. It is said to be extremely unlucky for any Witch
to heat his or her own brews and potions in a teakettle or cauldron
belonging to another.

If a lady and a gentleman pour out a cup of brew from the same pot, this is
an omen that a child will be born to them. If two women pour, one of them
will give birth to a red-haired set of twins within the year.

It is an invitation to poverty and misfortune should you throw away herbs
that are leftover from potions and brews. For good fortune to smile upon
you, always dispose of used herbs by casting them into a fire.

A stranger will soon be arriving on your doorstep if you accidentally leave
the lid of the teakettle or cauldron off while preparing a magickal brew.
This superstitious belief hails from Victorian-era England.

It is said to be unlucky to stir a Witch's brew in a widdershins. To do so
creates bad vibrations and attracts negative influences. Always stir deosil.
If your left eye itches while you are brewing a potion, this is an omen that
sorrow shall soon find it's way into your life. An itching of your right eye
indicates precisely the opposite. How and where these originated is a
mystery.

Daily Aromatherapy Tip...Rental Cars

When you have to drive a rental car be sure to have your essential oils with you. I speak from experience on this one. A spray mist is the first step in removing odors.

Spray the seats etc. If you have time wipe down the steering wheel and other areas with a cloth dipped in a pan of water with Lemon and Tea Tree. Actually any oil will do the trick.

A car diffuser is next, or place cotton balls with Lemon essential oil under the seats. Lavender, Tea Tree or any of your favorite blends can also be used. The oils will remove the odors not just mask them.

Sirach 24:12-14, 16-17

I am a cedar by the ocean,
a cypress on the mountainside,
a date-palm in the desert.
I am the rose within the city walls,
in the valley I grow like an olive.
And everywhere I put forth green
shoots like the vine, and everywhere
my harvest is honor and wealth.
~Sirach 24:12-14, 16-17

In the Hebrew scriptures - the Bible - Wisdom speaks as a woman. In this famous passage, she compares herself to the various trees of the land. Just as they are adapted to their specific environment, so does Wisdom adapt our minds to the setting in which we find ourselves. We need a different kind of wisdom to sustain a friendship than we do to build a career; we experience wisdom differently when we must be clever than when we can be kind.

There are may be many trees, but there is only one energy enlivening them all. Similarly, there is one Wisdom showing us the way to balance the needs of others and our own, showing us how to be both firm and loving, revealing the way to be both happy and successful. Listen to Wisdom, and she will lead you to yourself.
