Litha Legends and Lore Myths and Mysteries of the Midsummer Solstice

Litha Legends and Lore Myths and Mysteries of the Midsummer Solstice

By Patti Wigington

Litha is still a time of celebration around the world.

Image © Matt Cardy/Getty Images
Litha or Midsummer, is a celebration that has been observed for centuries, in one form or another. It is no surprise, then, that there are plenty of myths and legends associated with this time of year!

a.. In England, rural villagers built a big bonfire on Midsummer's Eve. This was called "setting the watch," and it was known that the fire would keep evil spirits out of the town. Some farmers would light a fire on their land, and people would wander about, holding torches and lanterns, from one bonfire to another. If you jumped over a bonfire -- presumably without lighting your pants on fire -- you were guaranteed to have good luck for the coming year.
b.. After your Litha fire has burned out and the ashes gone cold, use them to make a protective amulet.
c.. You can do this by carrying them in a small pouch, or kneading them into some soft clay and forming a talisman. In some traditions of Wicca, it is believed that the Midsummer ashes will protect you from misfortune. You can also sow the ashes from your bonfire into your garden, and your crops will be bountiful for the rest of the summer growing season.
d.. It is believed in parts of England that if you stay up all night on Midsummer's Eve, sitting in the middle of a stone circle, you will see the Fae. But be careful - carry a bit of rue in your pocket to keep them from harassing you, or turn your jacket inside out to confuse them. If you have to escape the Fae, follow a ley line, and it will lead you to safety.
e.. Residents of some areas of Ireland say that if you have something you wish to happen, you "give it to the pebble." Carry a stone in your hand as you circle the Litha bonfire, and whisper your request to the stone -- "heal my mother" or "help me be more courageous", for example. After your third turn around the fire, toss the stone into the flames.
f.. Astrologically, the sun is entering Cancer, which is a water sign. Midsummer is not only a time of fire magic, but of water as well. Now is a good time to work magic involving sacred streams and holy wells. If you visit one, be sure to go just before sunrise on Litha, and approach the water from the east, with the rising sun. Circle the well or spring three times, walking deosil, and then make an offering of silver coins or pins.
g.. Sunwheels were used to celebrate Midsummer in some early Pagan cultures. A wheel -- or sometimes a really big ball of straw -- was lit on fire and rolled down a hill into a river. The burned remnants were taken to the local temple and put on display. In Wales, it was believed that if the fire went out before the wheel hit the water, a good crop was guaranteed for the season.
h.. In Egypt, the Midsummer season was associated with the flooding of the Nile River delta. In South America, paper boats are filled with flowers, and then set on fire. They are then sailed down the river, carrying prayers to the gods. In some traditions of modern Paganism, you can get rid of problems by writing them on a piece of paper and dropping them into a moving body of water on Litha.
i.. William Shakespeare associated Midsummer with witchcraft in at least three of his plays. A Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth, and The Tempest all contain references to magic on the night of the summer solstice.

Bright Blessings

Their mutual love of renaissance faires as a way to touch and engage an audience brought them as if by the magic of Crossford woods to Liberty Lake and to Andy Pritikin. The magic swept him in as well for he had only seen his first renaissance faire that very year. If you can't see this email, click here

Get Ready for Litha!

Day 7: Your Litha Celebration
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism / Wicca
When Litha rolls around, chances are good you're celebrating outside. Gardens are blooming, the sun is shining -- why not take advantage of that, and enjoy your celebration with some recipes that honor the themes of the season? Pick some lemon balm for a fresh pot of iced tea, grill up some veggies or salmon over the fire, or candy a bit of ginger for a spicy-sweet snack!
Lemon Balm Tea

Lemon balm is in full bloom at this time of year, so harvest a few handfuls of leaves and brew up your own tea. The distinct lemon flavor can be offset a bit by adding some honey, stevia, or other sweetener. Make a pot and serve it over ice! Read More

Fresh Fruit Fennel Salad

Fennel has a rich, licorice-like flavor, and lends itself well to a cool summer salad. Add a bit of fruit to offset the savoriness of the fennel, top with a light mustard viniagrette, and you've got the perfect salad to serve as a side or main course. Read More

Savory Snack Wraps

If your family enjoys finger food, these snack wraps are easy to make, and can be prepped ahead of time and chilled in the fridge. They work nicely as an appetizer for any summer menu, or you can put together a variety of them as a main course for a light dinner. Read More

Grilled Summer Veggies

Vegetables work great on the grill! Chop up a selection and use the energy of the Litha sun to cook them. For smaller bites, try skewering them and serving as kebobs. Read More

Fiery Grilled Salmon

In Celtic lore, the salmon is associated with knowledge. In fact, the first person to taste this delicious fish was granted all kinds of wisdom! At the summer solstice, certainly a time of fire, why not toss a salmon into the flame so you can partake of its vast knowledge? This simple dish can be prepared out on your grill to keep the kitchen cool, and tastes just as good cold the next day on top of a salad. Read More

Candied Ginger Bites

Ginger is a root vegetable found in a lot of Asian cuisine, but it can be grown all over the world. Few foods embody the heat of summer like ginger. Candy it with sugar and corn syrup, then store it for a fiery and sweet snack combination! Read More

Have a Blessed Litha!

Congratulations! You've completed your Seven-Day Sabbat class, and by now you should have some great ideas about how to celebrate Litha, the Midsummer Solstice, and the history behind it. If you've enjoyed this e-class, you may also want to check out our Intro to Wicca E-Class, or one of our other Seven Day Sabbat courses. Have a magical and blessed Litha!

DailyOM: Burning Brightly

DailyOM - Allowing Your Soul to Shine
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

June 9, 2011
Burning Brightly
Allowing Your Soul to Shine
When we hide and try to be invisible and unseen by all we are only really hiding from ourselves.

At times, we’ve all wanted to crawl under a rock and hide away from the world. We may have preferred to be invisible rather than let other people see us or notice that we exist. This desire not to be seen often happens when we are feeling very hurt, angry, or simply weary of the world. And while we may console ourselves with the defense that we are shy, an introvert, or a loner, we may actually be hiding.

When we hide and make believe that we are invisible, we can think that we no one sees us even though, truthfully, we are only really hiding from ourselves. And while we may try to live life as inconspicuously as possible, we only succeed in becoming more conspicuous because people can’t help but notice that we are trying to hide our light. None of us are meant to hide; each one of us radiates a unique brilliance that is meant to illuminate the world. When we try to dim our light, we diminish the natural radiance of the Universe, and we deprive the people around us of the unique gifts and talents that we are here to share.

Stepping out of the wings and letting your light shine is actually a way to serve the planet. We each have a responsibility to contribute to our community, and we do this when we let ourselves be seen. It doesn’t do anyone any good when we try to hide. We are all beings of light and we are here to light the way for each other. When we let ourselves shine, we become a bright mirror that others can see their own reflected brilliance through, and they can’t help but want to shine also. Shine your light out into the world, bless those around you by sharing your gifts, and watch the universe glow.

changing the way you may feel 'deep down inside' about unhealthy foods.

INTRODUCTION TO
WICCA!
With
High Priests Sage & Matthew
Saturday, June 11,
2011      Begins at
4:00p.m.       FREE!

Wicca is a positive, nature-oriented Pagan
religion derived from very ancient roots.  It is not evil.
It is not devil-worship.  The origins of the word 'Wicca' are
believed to have come from the Anglo-Saxon word meaning "wise one" and Wicca is
known, therefore, as "The Craft of the Wise"!

This class, as the
title implies, is meant to serve as an introduction to Wicca.  Join us
and bring your questions, doubts and curiosity about Wicca to this event for FREE!  Beginning in June, Priests Sage & Matthew
will present a 13 week course entitled Wicca 101.  Whether
you are a beginner looking for some guidance, a solitary practitioner in search
of some formal training, or simply have a desire to learn more about this deep
and ancient spirituality, this class will be the perfect opportunity to
learn a fair mix of tradition, technique, history, myth, magick and
mystery!

Feeling a deep connection to magick and myth all of his life,
Priest Sage has been following the Wiccan path for the past 13 years.  He
is a 1st Degree Wiccan High Priest, initiated in the Alexandrian/Gardnerian
traditions, but now practices a more eclectic style of Wicca.  As a High
Priest, he has lead & performed countless rituals and ceremonies with many
circles and groups in the Pagan community.

Matthew is an initiated 1st
Degree Wiccan High Priest who was taught in the stylings of the
Alexandrian/Gardnerian traditions.  Although initiated just over 3 years
ago, he has always had a deep interest in the magickal arts and has performed
& participated in many rituals and ceremonies in the Pagan community as
well.

----------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for reading, folks.  We'd sure appreciate
a call to let us know you're coming to any of the above events. Walk-ins are
always welcome, however if a practitioner does not know in advance of your
desire to join us, the event is sometimes postponed or cancelled.

Hope to
see you all soon!

peace,

her faithful Afghan hound.
Juliette vividly describes her visit to a Bedouin village, and the trouble this causes, both in the kibbutz where she lives and among the Bedouins. But with keen wit, steely nerve, and kind heart, she manages to please

Group Past Life
Regression

 By
Bridget

Past life
regressions are a process that allows you to experience one or more of your past
lives by putting you into a light state of hypnosis. This allows your
subconscious to remember back to a life time before the one you are in now.
You may see, hear, smell, or just know that you have experienced what your mind
is accessing. This can be a wonderful tool to help with issues in this life
time, helping to understand behavioral problems like phobias, or even picking
bad relationships. Past life regression can also just be an enjoyable way to see
what we've experienced in past life times also.

Solomon's Garden
Commonly known as "living jewels," the history of koi fish began in the mid 1800s, when Japanese fishermen began to selectively breed carp. They noticed that certain mutations were causing certain fish to have brightly colored scales, instead of the normal grey.
The tradition continues today at Solomon's Garden, one of the newest shops to open its doors in beautiful Stoudtburg Village.

Subject: Follow-Up Email regarding the "Gay Men's Healing Ritual..."

Good morning, all, and a Happy Wednesday and Day of Mercury to all of you!  This is both a follow-up Email to the first Email I sent exactly one week ago, as well as a longer Email with all the logistical information.  This is for those of you that are participating in/attending the "Gay Men's Healing Ritual" that I have the honor and pleasure of leading with the NYC Open Gay Men's Pagan Magick Circle (originally known as the New York Gay Men's Open Wiccan Coven).

First, the logistical information:

DATE: Tuesday, June 21, 2011, 8PM

PLACE: The Gay Community Center of Manhattan, located at Number 208 West 13th Street, between Greenwich and Seventh Avenues, but a little closer to Seventh Avenue.  The Room is 412, the Charles Angel Room (ask a staff person to give you directions).

For those of you that shall be a part of this Ritual, please bring the following:

1.  A black, dark blue or dark purple candle.

2.  A journal or notebook

3.  Anything you would like to have charged to empower you as a wild and free Gay Man.

If you like, you may explore the following questions between now and then:

1.  What prevents me from being the wild and free Gay man that I know I am meant to be?

2.  What is my greatest fear as a Gay Man, one I would not have if I were not a Gay Man?

3.  What can I do to be more empowered and free?

For those of you that have yet to come to a Ritual with the NYC Open Gay Men's Pagan Magick Circle, the first few minutes after the room is made available to us (there is a group that meets in the same room before us) is what I Lovingly call "organized chaos."  The first five to ten minutes are spent preparing the room for Ritual, and sometimes some of us (myself included, although not as much lately) experience an overwhelming feeling.  I assure you it is temporary and transitory.  My intention is that by no later than 8:20PM the Ritual be under way.

After the Ritual, we shall talk, chat, eat, drink, laugh and maybe cry with Divine Love Healing Energy.

We ask that all who are a part of the Ritual make a donation to go to the cost of the space.  Are you required to give a donation?  No.  Are you required to give a donation in a specific amount?  No.  Nonetheless, the donation does make a difference and I have it on good authority that any monies remaining go to buy wine.  So, if you love drinking wine, then you have a good motivation to give a donation!  Ha, Ha!!

On a serious note, one of my dearest friends recently and Lovingly Re-Minded me that I am a mirror.  In other words, if there is something that you do not like about yourself, and something you do not wish to address in your life, you shall find yourself rather uncomfortable in my presence.  My intention with this Ritual remains the same: To dissolve the barriers and blockages, both within and without that prevent us as Gay Men from being empowered and free, wild and successful, Self-Aware and Self-Expressed.  Besides, if this Ritual begins the way I believe it shall, then the personality that is connected to Robert Alvarez, the Psychic Witch shall not be all that present.

If any of you have any questions regarding the "Gay Men's Healing Ritual," please do not hesitate to contact me, via my primary Email address, thetarotman@excite.com.  In the meantime, thank you, one and all, for honoring who I am and what I do.

May all the Goddesses and Angels Lovingly and Lavishly Bless all of you and yours with Divine Love, Divine Light, Divine Prosperity, Divine Peace, Divine Honor and Divine Healing.

Enchanted Empress Blessings, Robert Alvarez, the Psychic Witch.

This Week's Spell
Financial Trouble Freeze
by Tammy Sullivan

Bills can mount up quickly and are often unforeseen.  This spell can help through unexpected financial potholes.  Make a photocopy of the bill in question and tear it up into small pieces.  Place the bits in a clean ice tray.  Sprinkle cinquefoil over the tray.  As you fill the tray with water, recite:
The obligation is mine,
but I need more time.
Go to sleep for now Bill,
until my responsibility I can fulfill.
Make it so, make it so!
Place the ice tray in the freezer until water is solid.  Remove the cubes and store in a plastic bag in the freezer until you can pay the amount due in full.

Celtic Tree Calendar: Duir (Oak) - June 10 to July 7
Every house has a front door. If you wish to enter, the door must be approached and your presence made known. The door may then be opened. The very word 'door' comes from the Gaelic and Sanskrit 'duir', a word for solidity, protection and the Oak tree. In the essential forest, the Oak is King. He stands mightily solid with great branches, matched only by still greater roots. He is often struck by lightning. The force of the strike and the heat bursts the sap and stem apart leaving the trunk gnarled and withered. Yet he still manages to survive, over the years, decades and centuries. His growth is slow but sure. His children grow into magnificent replicas of himself and he is a marker point, a cornerstone and a refuge in the forest.
Magical Associations: All positive purposes, magic for men, fidelity

Remembrance: On this date in 1692, Bridget Bishop was found guilty of the crime of Witchcraft , and hanged on Gallows Hill in Salem, Massachusetts. She was the first person publicly executed in the infamous Salem Witch Trials.

Blessing the Family Ritual

Blessing the Family Ritual
Incense of the day: Musk

The eight-day Roman
festival, Vestalia, commenced on this day. In honor of Vesta, Goddess of Fire and the Hearth, the Romans made offerings of food baked on their
own hearths. Vesta’a temple was opened to all married women for just
this brief time. Once the festival ended, the temple was open only to
the Goddess’ attendants, the Vestal Virgins. The festival was a nature
celebration that remained popular with indigenous communities. As keeper of the sacred hearth, Vesta is regarded as a homebound Goddess. Today,
devote some time to making your home a sacred place. Commit thirty
minutes to creating order and harmony for your sanctuary. This can be a
simple task like organizing one drawer or tidying a cupboard.

Daily Aromatherapy Tip -  Fine Crystal Bathing Sand
.
You'll see this product packaged in fancy jars or envelopes with a
hefty price tag; you can make your own for a fraction of the cost.
You will need:

2 cups (500 ml) borax (desert salt)
1/2 cup (125 ml) fine ground sea salt
1/2 cup (125 ml) baking soda (soda ash)
1/4 cup (50 ml) white clay
1/2 cup (125 ml) dried herb of your choice
10 drops essential oil

To make:
1. In a large bowl, mix together the salts, baking soda, and clay.
2. Prepare the dried herb by powdering in a spice mill, crumbling by
hand, or leaving whole if you prefer
3. Add the dried herbs to the salt mix, stirring with a wire whisk.
4. Scent the mixture using the essential oil of your choice. (Be sure
to choose oils that are safe for external use.) Do not overscent;
excess oil results in a clumpy, unattractive product.
5. Mix well with a wire whisk, then cover with a towel.
6. Leave overnight to fix the scent.
7. In the morning, thoroughly mix again and package.
To use:
Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup (50 to 125 ml) sand to a tubful of warm water.
Yield: Approximately 3 3/4 cups (925 ml)
A Note on Preparing Herbs Crush the dried herbs for bath sand as
finely or coarsely as you like, or you can even leave them whole.
Powdering is the best idea for anyone with temperamental plumbing; if
you leave the herbs whole, it's probably a good idea to package the
finished mixture in a small muslin bag for use in the tub. This will
also make tub cleaning easier than if you throw the sand freely into
the tub.

Proverbs 31:10-31

The value of a worthy woman is far beyond pearls.

She obtains wool and flax and makes cloth with skillful hands.

She rises while it is still night, and distributes food to her household.

She picks out a field to purchase; out of her earrings she plants a vineyard. She is girt about with strength, and sturdy are her arms.

She enjoys the success of her dealings; at night her lamp is undimmed.

She puts her hands to the distaff, and her fingers to ply the spindle.

She reaches out her hands to the poor, and extends her arms to the needy.

She fears not the snow for her household; everyone is warmly clothed;

She makes her own coverlets; fine linen and purple are her clothing.

She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs at the days to come.

She opens her mouth in wisdom, and on her tongue is kindly counsel.~
Proverbs 31:10-31

In the Christian calendar, this is the feast of a queenly woman, Margaret. Born in Hungary, she became queen of Scotland, known for her beneficence and gracious generosity. On her feast day, this raise-song for womanly prudence and economy is read to the congregation. It recalls how, in times past, the industry of women was clearly necessary to the wealth of the family. A hard-working and careful woman made her family comfortable - not through monetary exchange, but through her own visible efforts.

Women's efforts at sustaining hearth and home are less rewarded now. When money is the measure of a task's worth, unpaid labor is devalued and even derided. Yet the sustaining tasks of homemaking - of making a home - are still valuable and praiseworthy. On this day that traditionally recognized women's industry, let us lift our voices in praise of our own work and that of others who make our lives possible.

It says "homemaker" on my mortgage. The farming I do don't pay except in food to eat or as the example to the kids. My wife has the "paying job" in a technology field. I mind the sheep and horses.
Patricia needs to drop the belief in mysoginism that feminism was built upon. She should come join us in the 21st century.

besides, everyone knows the patriarchal tradition is founded on owning women just like cattle, or else why even mention pearls? :D heh heh heh heh, she said pearl, hehehe.
