Daily Feng Shui Tip

Daily Feng Shui Tip by Ellen Whitehurst for Monday, June 13
When I saw that today celebrates the energies of 'Sewing Machine Day' I thought about what Feng Shui says about the strings that go through the needle and how they can exponentially help you. Using different color threads can activate positive results for different life intentions that you might create along your living way. One of the more esoteric but highly successful thread cures is appropriately called the 'Four Red Strings Cure' and is used when you need to address or improve problems in your life that might seem insurmountable. In each of the four corners of your bedroom, install a red string that hangs from the ceiling to the floor. These four strings will symbolize what are known as the legendary four columns that hold up heaven. My Grandmaster, the Honorable Lin Yun, always said that these four red strings could represent a telephone line of sorts that runs from Heaven to earth while also invoking the power of the heavens to intercede and act on your behalf. At the midway point of these strings attach another nine inch red string. This string symbolizes you. Visualize that you are now halfway between heaven and earth and you'll receive aid and assistance from helpful people on both planes. This cure also promises to shower you with Chi that will help you to not only overcome your obstacles, but also find the opportunities behind them! Let's face it, if you get even half of the blessings and benefits that this adjustment promises you'll have your problems all sewn up. And that, my friend, is what this day is all about!
The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.

Summer Solstice
Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com nightshayde99
Mon Jun 13, 2011 8:25 am (PDT)
SUMMER SOLSTICE – June 20th/21st
This year the Summer Solstice on Tuesday, June 21st. The Summer Solstice (Northern Hemisphere) is a turn of seasons leading us towards the heart of ourselves.
It is officially the first day of summer and the longest day of the year. The Solstice is the time when the sun stand still and is also referred to as Litha or Midsummer because it is roughly the middle of the growing season throughout much of Europe. This holiday marks the Maiden Goddess's transition into the cycle of the Mother Goddess. Here she manifests herself as Mother Earth, The Generous Mother (giving us more than what we need), Freya, Flora, Habondia, Juno, Vesta – giving life to all her children. The God is represented as the Sun King, the Oak King, Lugh, the Shining One. In celebration people light fires, stay up all night, bedeck themselves with flowers, and celebrate with love-shakin' pagan parties! Summer Solstice is ACTIVE – doing, expanding and living the dream envisioned in winter. It's time to feed your Creative Fire! So nurture, sustain and protect your creations like a good mother would. Water your genius like you water your garden!

Summer Solice ideas for the alter.
nice and simply on a witches budget here lol.

Auntie Crone
Here are some ideas:
Midsummer Altar Ideas
Themes: Growing, the Sun, Blossoming, Abundance, Warmth
Set your altar up outside or in a place that gets a lot of sunlight
Sun Symbols: circles, disks, sunflowers, solar images, candles, fire, etc.
Seasonal Fruits and Veggies from your garden or local farms & markets
Flowers: Roses are the favorite of the Goddess this time of year, but all blooms are welcome
Colors: Solar colors like yellow, oranges, reds… think bright. I'm a big fan of Rainbows.
Trees: Oak Trees, acorns
Elements of Water & Fire
Addie Picks the first bunch of Kale
Midsummer Rituals
Pick fresh berries and veggies from your garden. Surround yourself with lots of color and fresh flowers. Light candles or have a summer bonfire (be safe!) to honor Midsummer and the God of the Sun. Throw or attend a party. Light sparklers, let the kids stay up late, celebrate the abundance in your life right now. Make wishes for the future.

Craft Ideas
It's Litha, and that means the sun is at its highest point in the sky. Midsummer is the time when we can celebrate the growing of crops, and take heart in knowing that the seeds we planted in the spring are now in full bloom. It's a time of celebrating the sun, and spending as much time as you can outdoors. Try to set up your Midsummer altar outside if at all possible. If you can't, that's okay -- but try to find a spot near a window where the sun will shine in and brighten your altar setup with its rays.
Colors of the Season
This sabbat is all about the sun celebration, so think of solar colors. Yellows, oranges, fiery reds and golds are all appropriate this time of year. Use candles in bright sunny colors, or cover your altar with cloths that represent the solar aspect of the season.
Solar Symbols
Litha is when the sun is at its highest point above us. In some traditions, the sun rolls across the sky like a great wheel - consider using pinwheels or some other disc to represent the sun. Circles and discs are the most basic sun symbol of all, and are seen as far back as the tombs of ancient Egypt. Use equal-armed crosses, such as the Brighid's Cross, or even the swastika - remember, it was originally a good luck symbol to both the Hindus and Scandinavians before it became associated with the Nazis.
A Time of Light and Dark
The solstice is also a time seen as a battle between light and dark. Although the sun is strong now, in just six months the days will be short again. Much like the battle between the Oak King and the Holly King, light and dark must battle for supremacy. At this sabbat, light wins. Decorate your altar with symbols of the triumph of light over darkness - and that includes using other opposites, such as fire and water, night and day, etc.
Other Symbols of Litha
Midsummer fruits and vegetables from your garden
Gods Eyes in sunny colors
Sunflowers, roses
Oak trees and acorns
Sandalwood, saffron, frankincense, laurel
Check out other readers' altar photos in our Litha Altar Gallery, and send in your own picture to be included!

Wait....I like my computer! And my hubby and I have dreams of having our own
farm, does that mean I'm not really a pagan? No. Silly people talking about
things they don't understand. There are plenty of people who see an allure from
primitive living, heck, I love learning about how to make primitive weapons,
etc. But to lump people who care about the earth together and use statements
such as "dark paganism" and "a society that would require the disappearance of
95% of the human race" are fear tactics. But it did give me a chuckle too.

When I was about 12 there was a book that came out in the Christian genre
called "ravaged by the new age" this book in my opinion was very destructive
to everything. It was scaring Christians into believing that being
environmentally friendly, going to Disney world, homeschooling your
children, naming your baby anything other than something trendy at the time
would be the work of participating in flat out satanism. I mean anything
other than straight up Christian roots was considered new age, and anything
new age was satanism. Even though most new agers don't even believe in
Satan. It was like they were saying anything but what we say goes makes you
a Satan worshiper (and I don't mean the non conformist satanists they were
talking devil worshippers who sacrifice babies even though there has never
been a proven account of that in the US.) At the time I was raised in the
Christian way and even I could see the error there, but it even scared me a
bit. But that is part of the problem a lot of your more fanatical religions
(any religion I am not picking on Christians here) base their religion and
loyalty in inflicting fear in to its congregation that makes it hard for
them to leave it.
BLESSINGS!!!

Today's DailyOM brought to you by:
June 13, 2011
Plunging Into The Deep
Life Can Be Scary
No matter how brave, strong, or levelheaded we are, sometimes we all get scared.
Life can take us on a roller coaster ride full of highs and lows and twists and turns. Even for those of us who enjoy unexpected thrills, it's frightening to suddenly find ourselves heading for a deep plunge. Yet, it happens to all of us. At these moments, it is important to remember that you are not alone in your experiences. No matter how brave, strong, or levelheaded we are, sometimes, we all get scared.
Our fears may revolve around our physical safety, particularly if we are not feeling well, living under difficult circumstances, or doing work that exposes us to hazardous conditions. Or, we may be experiencing financial woes that are causing us to be fearful about making ends meet. We may also fear the loss of a loved one who is sick, or we may be scared of never finding someone special to spend our life with. We may be scared to start at a new school, begin a different job, move to a new town, or meet new people. Whatever our fears are, they are valid, and we do not need to feel ashamed or embarrassed that we are, at times, afraid.
It may be comforting to know that everyone gets scared, and it is perfectly OK. Sometimes just acknowledging our fears is enough to make us feel better. And while it sometimes takes a lot more to ease our mind, we can console ourselves with the knowledge that life can be scary at times. Giving ourselves permission to be scared lets us move through our fears so we can let it go. It also makes it alright to share our fears with others. Sharing our apprehensions with other people can make our fears less overwhelming because we are not letting them grow inside of us as pent up emotions. Sharing our fears also can lighten our burden because we are not carrying our worries all by ourselves. Remember that you are not alone.

Questions about "Moderated" Status
Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com nightshayde99
Mon Jun 13, 2011 4:12 pm (PDT)
Greetings to the group members. I have received e-mails from members inquiring as to why they are on "Moderated" status. I will address these questions in this text file which will automatically be sent out monthly.
1. New Members are on Moderated status for two to three weeks to make sure they are observing the Group Rules (which are sent out with each new membership); and, these rules can be found in the "Files" section as well. Also, the membership files contain information for 1450 members, listed alphabetically, and to go through this entire membership list to check a member's status can take as long as 4-6 hours or longer. So, if you are a new member and after several weeks you are still being Moderated, it is probably likely that we are lagging behind on updates.
2. Some members send inflammatory e-mails to the group, usually in response to another member's post. If this happens more than a couple of times, the member is put on Moderated status until the responses improve.
3. Although we are quite lenient about what we allow on the list, some things are just not appropriate. Some members send posts about things totally unrelated to the list's usual subjects. Although it is not a problem to tell the group about your Pagan/Wiccan business, if that is the only kind of post you send to the list, you will be put on Moderated status.
4. Unfortunately, "spambots" or an idiot who hacks into a member's account will send out lots of spam, and we put those members on moderated status until it stops. When this happened to my account, I put myself on Moderated status until for a time. Messages from members on Moderated status which do not fall into any of these categories will be sent through to the group.
This group is for the benefit of the members, and we strive to keep it user-friendly.

Elder's Meditation of the Day

Elder's Meditation of the Day - June 13
"We have an old saying, Everything living must die. Only the rocks and mountains are forever."
-- Archie Fire Lame Deer, LAKOTA
The Creator designed all life to happen in a circle. For example, the cycle of life for the human being is Baby, Youth, Adult, Elder, then we die. The trees and the leaves happen in a circle; the leaves bud, then the leaves mature, next the leaves change color, and at last they fall off the tree to return to the Mother Earth. The birds bear their young, raise their young, then they die. The salmon are born, swim to the ocean, live their lives, swim back to the spawning grounds, then die. All aspects of the Life Cycle should be honored.
Great Spirit, today, let me enjoy today.

Year's First Total Eclipse of Moon Will Be Unusually Long

Lunar Eclipse 2011: Year's First Total Eclipse Of Moon Will Be Unusually Long, Not Visible In North America
By ALICIA CHANG 06/11/11 02:31 PM ET
LOS ANGELES -- The year's first total eclipse of the moon will last an unusually long time, a rare celestial treat for a wide swath of the globe.
Except if you're in the United States and Canada. North America will be left out of Wednesday's lunar spectacle, which will be visible from start to finish from eastern Africa, central Asia, the Middle East and western Australia – weather permitting.
The period when Earth's shadow completely blocks the moon – known as totality – will last a whopping 1 hour and 40 minutes. The last time the moon was covered for this long was in July 2000, when it lasted 7 minutes longer than that.
The full moon normally glows from reflected sunlight. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon glides through the long shadow cast by the Earth and is blocked from the sunlight that illuminates it.
As the moon plunges deeper into the Earth's shadow, the disk will appear to gradually change color, turning from silver to orange or red. This is because some indirect sunlight still reaches the moon after passing through the Earth's atmosphere, which scatters blue light. Only red light strikes the moon, giving it an eerie crimson hue.
It's difficult to predict the exact shade the moon will take, which will depend on how much dust and clouds are in the atmosphere during the eclipse.
Since the moon will pass close to the center of the Earth's shadow, the total eclipse phase will be longer than usual, said NASA eclipse expert Fred Espenak at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.
The entire eclipse will last a little over 5 1/2 hours. Observers in Europe will miss the first part of the show because it will occur before the moon rises. Eastern Asia and eastern Australia won't catch the final stages, which will happen after the moon sets. Portions of South America will be able see the moon entirely shrouded.
Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye.
Story continues below
Keith Gleason, who runs the Sommers-Bausch Observatory in Boulder, Colo., is disappointed that he will not have a ringside seat to the upcoming eclipse. The last total lunar eclipse visible from the U.S. occurred on Dec. 21, 2010, which coincided with winter solstice and was widely observed. Some 1,400 people showed up for a viewing party at the observatory.
"We had an absolutely glorious time," he said.
The next total lunar eclipse will fall on Dec. 10 with best viewing from Asia and Australia. The moon will be completely blotted out for 51 minutes. Only parts of the U.S. including Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest will catch a glimpse.
The rest of the continental U.S. will have to wait until April 15, 2014 to witness a total lunar eclipse.

Inspiring Quote
Speech is in all things. The people of Atitlan believe that the nature of anything is its speech. The nature of grass to grow is the speech of the spirit of grass. The flowering of trees is the speech of a tree's spirit, as is the time of year when they flower. So when the Deity of that season speaks one of its phrases, the trees flower.

My Season: Flowering
It seems like everything is blooming right now in Seattle. Lilies of the valley and lilacs slightly past their prime. Hawthorn flowers fading, though there are still some blooming at the tops of the trees. Peonies. Wallflowers. Baby's breath. Bergenia. Wisteria (I love its creamy, vanilla scent).
And my favorites, the irises. I seem to have gotten more sensitive to their lovely scent because now I can smell them across the street (I used to have to go put my nose right into the middle of the open flower). (My daughter just called to report that they smell like root beer to her; to me they smell like sugar and violets.)
Another of my favorite plants is also blooming: rosa rugosa. I love to collect the fragile, papery pink flowers—they fall into my hand when I cup my fingers around them and tug gently. I use them to make ice cream and sorbet. They have a faintly yeasty flavor—I bet they have a natural yeast occurring on them, just like grapes. This year I'm also trying a rose vinegar, which should be good for the skin.
The most miraculous flowering is my angelica. I planted a tiny angelica plant I ordered online from Mountain Valley Growers three years ago. It's supposed to be a biennial but it has lasted three years in my garden where it seems to be very happy, so much so that is shaded out the rosa rugosa and rhubarb in the middle bed. Then this year, just as I was considering chopping it down before it could do that again, it started flowering (see photo above). It has a faint fragrance and a magnificent presence. Truly the archangel of flowers.
I am working on an essay for my book about eating flowers and am planning a flower feast for friends, at which I will serve a salad garnished with flowers (including forget-me-nots and chive blossoms and borage flowers), fish dusted with fennel pollen, broccoli and cauliflower (it took me a while to figure out those were flowers—despite the obvious clues) and, for dessert, lavender shortbread and rose sorbet.
My life is flowering too. The humorous mystery novel about a talking Chihuahua I wrote with my friend Curt will probably be published in October of 2012 to coincide with National Adopt a Shelter Pet month (the dog in the book is a shelter pet). We are waiting for a contract from our publisher.
Meanwhile my dream agent is interested in my non-fiction book about finding nature in the city, called My Year in Flowers. The essay on eating flowers is part of it. So is an essay on talking to plants which is not quite done. I'm sharing some research and reading I've done for that essay in the article below. It seems appropriate as Midsummer is the most flowery of holidays.
May your summer flower,

Living in Season: Talking to Plants
In the stillness I looked inside and saw the wound laid down within all of us… The wound that comes from believing we are alone amid dead uncaring nature. And then I took a breath and began to share stories of a time when the world was young, when everyone knew that plants were intelligent and could speak to human beings… A time when it was different. Stephen Buhner
For over three years, I've been writing a series of essays about my quest to learn more about the plants in my city neighborhood. When I saw a flyer at my local herb shop for a plant communication workshop to be held at the Botanical Garden at the University of British Columbia, I knew this would be the capstone of my plant project.
When I told people I was attending a plant communication workshop, they assumed I was going to talk to plants. But it was not a one-way communication I sought, but a response from the plants. Stephen Buhner, in his books about plants, writes about how indigenous healers all over the world learn about the uses of medicinal plants, because the plants talk to them. Sometimes they sing songs. I wanted a plant to sing to me.
Plant communications are like stones in water. The ripples they create move throughout ecosystems; they wash up against us. That we take plant words in through our nose or our skin or our eyes or our tongue instead of our ears does not make their language less subtle. or sophisticated, or less filled with meaning. Stephen Buhner
I had brief glimpses of such a world. One evening on my walk home, I decided to listen to the plants instead of looking at them. What happened next stunned me. Every plant I passed was singing its own song. No distinct words, no instructions for their uses. But their energy was clear. Some were lively, some greedy, some dispirited (that was the English ivy). I had felt the energy of trees before, while hugging them, but this quite different: was more like walking through clouds of lyrics sung in a foreign language.
I had another surprising plant encounter on the day I left for the plant communication workshop. As I was walking home from my favorite coffee shop, plants kept jumping out in front of me (that's the only way I can describe it, although they didn't actually move). I stopped struck by a tree which was an apparition of dynamic shapes and vibrant colors. I took photos (see above) but that didn't capture the magic of the experience which had more to do with their beauty, than their words. What I hadn't realized was this might be one way plants talk.
The myriad living creatures around us are not waiting for just the right moment to surprise you with their great grasp of modern English. They are, in fact, communicating with us, each other and the whole world at every second. These communications may be in the form of scents, textures, sounds, energy or any other number of sensation based stimuli. Kiva Rose Hardin of the Anima Herbal School
In a series of articles about talking to plants , Kiva Rose Hardin recommends a six step process: Observation, Sensory Experience, Emotional Response, Cognition, Integration and Application. These reminded me of the process called Goethean observation, which I learned about from my friend Mary Oak who teaches at a Waldorf school. Goethe wanted "to grasp [the] outward, visible, tangible parts in context, to see these parts as an indication of what lies within and thereby gain some understanding of the whole through an exercise of intuitive perception." The steps involve close observation of a plant growing in the wild (especially drawing it), noting its context, studying its growth, and eventually intuitively entering into the world of the plant.
At the workshop, Pam told us to let a plant choose us. I was surprised at how easy this was. I had already been seduced by the beauty of a tree I was admiring (actually sketching) right outside the window but I was unprepared for the giant jolt of energy I received as I approached it. Pam had given us a list of ways to interact with the plant including touching it, smelling it, tasting it, and singing to it. She also asked us to ask the plant its name.
I enjoyed hanging out with my mystery plant but I didn't feel I was getting any response from it. Or rather, whenever I mentally imposed a name upon the tree, it was somehow obvious those weren't right. I finally began humming to the tree and somewhere in that process, when I had given up mentally assessing and analyzing, a name entered my thoughts: the green defender. Later, I would learn its other names:Japanese cedar, sugi (the national tree of Japan, where it is planted in front of temples) and dhuppi (in India, where it is planted near tea plantations as the wood is used to make the boxes in which tea was shipped to England). After the weekend, I realized that it has always been in my life. It is one of the trees in the nearby park that I visit every midwinter, collecting branches for my Advent wreath, and it also grows across the street. It has always been in my life, perhaps waiting for me to notice it.
All I am saying is that there is also drama in every bush, if you can see it. When enough men know this, we need fear no indifference to the welfare of bushes, or birds, or soil, or trees. We shall then have no need of the word "conservation," for we shall have the thing itself. Aldo Leopold

Spruce Tip Recipes
For a closer relationship with plants, try eating them.
I went on a foraging trip with our local plant guy, Arthur Lee Jacobson, and I really enjoyed the flavor of the evergreen tips we tried. (We also nibbled on some fragrant flowers of the Tillemia grandifloria, which I will also sprinkle in the salad at my flower feast.)
Then I found this great blog post about cooking with spruce tips. I want to try the spruce shortbread. (If you are going to try eating plants, be sure you have an accurate identification. I realized, walking around my neighborhood, that the bright green tips of yew look a lot like spruce tips, but you wouldn't want to nibble them. They're poisonous.
