Just Joined. Saying Hi!

Hi people. :) I just joined the list, so thought I'd do the introduction thing ... I'm living in London UK. I was actually born in Aus 46 years ago! (St George's hospital, Camperdown, Sydney, NSW.) But came to UK when I was 2 with my mum (mum and dad had split up). I could have got joint citizenship, but screwed it up and missed the deadline. Oh well :(

1. What particular fields of Paganism interest you?
I consider myself a pagan witch with an emphasis on traditional craft, though I love Wiccans and I think we're all just at different places on a continuous spectrum. I don't like the 'them and us' attitude in that area. I believe that whether you are trad or Wiccan the bottom line is we should all dig *deep* into our traditions and practices. I believe in depth over breadth.

2. What books have you read on Pagan related topics?
I have a huge pagan library, but have to admit (to my shame) that I have so far read very little of it cos I'm always so busy with work! I *love* Doreen Valiente cos I think she has a great spirit and understood things deeply. I read an interview of her just before her death and there wasn't an ounce of crusty old age about her. She was totally alive ... alive to new ideas! Wonderful stuff! My main text for working is Mastering Wichcraft by Paul Huson - working (very) slowly through that. I have read 'Light from the Shadows' (nice book) and 'Triumph of the Moon' by Ronald Hutton. I have a bit of a beef about historians cos I think they (like all specialists) have a tendency to get a blinkered view - if you spend too long looking at one thing it becomes the world to you. So I disagree with some of Ron's assertions, though he is clearly a masterful scholar! I believe if you were to look at witchcraft throughout Europe (and further afield) you would discredit a lot of what he says in 'Triumph.' I know it's unfashionanble these days (at least in UK), but I basically *believe* in the Murray hyphothesis, though I think she went a bit too far in asserting the organised religion thing.

3. Was there any single event that got you started?
Don't think so. I've always (since age of 8?) been interested in the occult and divination. I read some Tibetan books about the third eye when very young and was fascinated by Chinese astrology. I feel that paganism and witchcraft just make sense to me ... actually they help me to make sense of my whole life.

That's it guys. Thank you for your time.

I don't know what the greetings are on this list, so I'll try an unusual one ...

May you receive the blessings of a thousand sweaty camels!

My Gods man!! Methinks you and I should perhaps be preserved for posterity. ( I know there a a few here that would rejoice to see me stuffed on put in a museum). As for your taste and comments on the books,,Yes indeed Sir, yes indeed. You are kinder in your evaluation of Hutton than I am, personally I believe both he and the other trendy writer of this age of twatwaffle passing as academic brilliance, Mr Campbell have written a conglomeration of absolute nonsense.

Indeed the venerable Dr Murray, while not without some mistaken hypotheses, got a lot closer to the truth than the "newage Pagan" is comfortable admitting.

The Old Mastering Witchcraft!! And Dooreen Valiente's work!! David you are a breath of fresh air for me. I know a lot of people who have used either or both of these writer's books to base their reclaiming traditions on and been pretty damn successful too.

All the best.

'Tis the season

Musings from the Barbarian camp. Some ancient wisdoms or a load of waffle? Yours to decide.

Greetings All.

'Tis the season, not to be jolly, as is one's wont 'round the Yuletide festivals
and folly. No indeed! Tis time all good Barbarians and like folk take stock of
what is, what was and what could be.

Have we fallen away from loved ones so dear? Allowed petty grievance to put
barriers betwixt us and those of kith and kin? Has the eternal grind of poverty
lurking to catch us and grind us into the dust of despair if fortune turns her
fickle face away from us even briefly caused us to lose sight of the bigger
picture? Have we allowed misguided ambition to steer us away from those things
to which we should aspire?

May the wisdoms of the ancients cause us pause and reflection so we may right
ourselves and get back on the course our destinies have dictated we follow.
Grant us the wisdom to never allow the shallow and mundane to take a step away
from our allotted course. Grant that we are never foolish enough to not see the
real value of the love of a dear one.

As I write these words tears of regret course down my cheeks for the times in
life when I have not heeded all those things taught me in my youth and the pain
and anguish still felt for things that just can not be put right.'Tis time me
lovelies to ride the dark mare into the past, the present and future. Hang on,
for tis oft a rather rough and painful ride, but the Devil's own mount will carry you safely through Hell itself.

Bill.
