Please add my sister Crystal Luna Rouge to the list. She was hospitalized two
days ago with fluid in her legs in lungs. They are still running tests to see
what the cause is.

Thanks,
Annette

For once living over here has its advantages - LOL. I've been out about once
an hour photographing the eclipse. Totality is over now (couldn't shoot
that, too dark for my amateur camera), and the moon is starting to 'come out
the other side'.

Miki, I am sooo envious. I know it was beautiful. I had to be content watching it on a live feed on the Internet. I will have to wait until 2014 to watch one that will be visible here in the US.

10 Most Haunted Places in America

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Wed Jun 15, 2011 7:41 pm (PDT)

If you love a good ghost story and are fascinated by things that go bump in the night, you'll want to add these 10 most haunted places in America to your travel itinerary. They're sure to promise a good scare!

The Bachelor's Grove Cemetery was empty when this photo was taken (the woman appeared only after the photo was developed).

1. Bachelor's Grove Cemetery, Midlothian, IL
This 1800s-era cemetery has been largely abandoned since 1965, and since then has fallen victim to vandals. Among the toppled tombstones it is said that satanic and occultist groups perform ceremonies, and over 100 reports of strange phenomena have been collected.
Among them, ghost lights, inexplicable lights and voices, apparitions, strange photos, anomalous recordings and sightings of unbelievable creatures. There is also a nearby haunted lagoon, a phantom farmhouse and a stretch of haunted turnpike near Bachelor's Grove.
2. The Lemp Mansion, St. Louis, Missouri
Built in the 1860s by the Lemp family (who created "Falstaff" beer), the Lemp Mansion is said to be haunted by the family, which was surrounded by tragedy. William Lemp's son died in 1904, and afterward William committed suicide in the house. In 1920, his daughter also committed suicide, and later so did William Lemp, Jr., and Charles Lemp, leaving the family completely torn apart.
Since then, the house was sold and became a boarding house and later, in 1977, a fine restaurant (which is still open today). Workers and boarding tenants have reported feelings of being watched, vanishing tools, strange sounds, apparitions, glasses flying through the air, a piano playing by itself, voices and other strange occurrences.
3. Villisca Ax Murder House, Villisca, Iowa
In 1912, the J.B. Moore family (the parents and their four children), along with two children who were staying over that night, was murdered in their beds in a shocking crime for this otherwise small, peaceful community. The murders were never solved, but since then many unusual phenomena have been reported in the house. The Moore home was restored and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, and today is open to overnight visitors.
Guests have reported children's voices and laughter, falling lamps, moving objects, and odd sounds, while others have recorded audio, video and photographic evidence of supernatural activities. Psychics who have visited the home have also reportedly communicated with spirits.
4. The Old Slave House (Hickory Hill), Junction, IL
The Hickory Hill mansion was built in 1842 by a wealthy man, John Hart Crenshaw, who owned several salt tracts. Although it was illegal to own slaves in Illinois at this time, it was legal to lease slaves from other states to work in the salt mines.
Crenshaw imprisoned slaves, some of whom were kidnapped, in the attic of the mansion in narrow cells and manacles. He reportedly tortured and beat the slaves for many years, and also "bred" his own slaves, until eventually his cruel practices were discovered and he retired to become a farmer.
In the 1920s, the house was opened as a tourist attraction where slavery existed in Illinois, however tourists began reporting sounds of people crying and moaning coming from the attic, cold chills, and whispers. Things intensified when a ghost hunter named Hickman Whittington went to the attic shortly after it opened and spent a few hours there. Though he was in perfect health at the time, he died a few hours after leaving the mansion.
Reportedly, hundreds of people tried to spend the night in the attic after Whittington's death, but would leave, terrorized, before morning (one man did finally spend the night there in 1978, and reported strange sounds).
Currently, the Hickory Hills mansion is owned by the state of Illinois, and is scheduled to open as a historic site (but has not yet re-opened to visitors).

Stairs to the ceiling in the Winchester Mansion, San Jose, California.

5. The Winchester Mansion, San Jose, California
Sarah Winchester, a wealthy widow, built the 160-room Victorian Winchester mansion in 1884. It was such an unprecedented project that construction workers worked on the home 24 hours a day for 38 years. The home has many bizarre features, built to keep out evil spirits, including false doors, a room built for séances (where Sarah developed building plans that ghosts sent to her) and a stairway that leads to the ceiling, and many supernatural occurrences have happened there.
Sarah Winchester reportedly spoke to spirits nightly at midnight and since then people have reported organ music in the Blue Room where Sarah died, apparitions, cold spots, a smell of chicken soup in the kitchen, red balls of light and more. Today visitors can take tours of the mansion (including special nighttime flashlight tours).
6. Bobby Mackey's Music World, Wilder, Kentucky
Bobby Mackey's Music World is a dance hall that was once (in the 1850s) a slaughterhouse. Devil worshippers reportedly used the slaughterhouse's basement, which collected animal blood, for rituals, including one in which a woman was beheaded.
In the 1920s, the building was a speakeasy and several mob murders reportedly occurred on the site. Since it was converted into a dancehall in 1976, at least 30 people have signed affidavits that supernatural happenings have occurred there, including appearances of ghosts dressed in old-fashioned, cowboy-type clothing.
A customer even claims to have been assaulted by a ghost in the bathroom, which caused him to break his arm. He's suing Bobby Mackey for not ridding the building of spirits.

Strange images in the mirror at the Myrtles Plantation (photo taken by a guest at the inn).

7. Myrtles Plantation, St. Francisville, Louisiana
Now a bed-and-breakfast, the Myrtles Plantation is said to house many ghosts and spirits due to 10 murders and 1 suicide that have occurred there since it was built in 1796. Among them are the ghosts of Cleo, a former slave who was hung for poisoning two little girls, the ghosts of the little girls, and William Winter, a former owner who was shot on the front porch.
Other apparitions seen by visitors include ghosts from the slave graveyard on the property, and a ghost that meets guests at the inn's gate and says the plantation is closed. A psychic who visited the building said visiting the parlor was like walking into a "crowded cocktail party of spirits," while the owner of the bed-and-breakfast said the ghosts have proven to her that there's life after death.
8. John Stone's Inn, Ashland, Massachusetts
Captain John Stone's Inn is a 164-year-old pub, which once served as a hiding place for runaway slaves and was the location of speeches by Daniel Webster. Customers and employees of the pub report the apparition of a 10-year-old girl in a storage room near the kitchen, moving objects and invisible hands that hold their hands under the ice when filling ice buckets. There were two televised séances held here during which the spirits of a little girl, a woman innkeeper and Captain John Stone were reportedly contacted.
9. Devil's Promenade, Hornet, Missouri
There is an unexplained ball of orange light that has been seen every night since 1866 on a two-mile stretch of road known as the Devil's Promenade. Legend suggests the light is the ghost of two Quapaw Indians who were in love and committed suicide together. Another theory is that it is the lantern of a miner's ghost who is looking for his missing wife and children, who were abducted.
The light -- also called the Hornet Ghost Light, the Neosho Spook Light, and the Devil's Jack o' Lantern -- is known to enter cars, dodge people and leave glowing traces and sparks behind as it moves. The Army Corps of Engineers investigated the phenomenon in 1946 and concluded it was "a mysterious light of unknown origin." The light was also investigated by the Ghost Research Society in 1983, which found it was a diamond-shaped light with a hollow center.
10. United States Air Force Museum, Dayton, Ohio
Night guards report moving objects, apparitions and unexplained voices and sounds at this military museum. Among the occurrences:

Parts from the "Lady Be Good," a B-24 that crashed in the Libyan Desert in World War II, killing seven crewmembers, move by themselves.

Strange lights appear in the "Strawberry Bitch," another B-24.

The ghost of the helicopter "Hop-Along's" co-pilot can be seen flipping switches in an attempt to get the craft moving.

The "Black Maria," a helicopter, is haunted by its pilot, who was killed in Vietnam.

The ghost of a Japanese boy has been seen standing next to "Bockscar," the bomber that dropped the A-bomb on Nagasaki.

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"When you go inside that power, there's no fear. It's so beautiful!! There's no fear there. There's no pain."

-- -- Wallace Black Elk, LAKOTA

Imagine you are standing on the edge of a stage. In the center of the stage is a spotlight shining from above. If you stand anyplace outside the spotlight, in the darkness, you will experience fear. But as soon as you step into the light in the center of the stage, all fear and pain go away. When we stand in the power, fear cannot exist. How do we find this place of power? We pray our way into it. We ask the Creator to take our hand and help us. When we get to that place, we will feel the fear go away.

Great Spirit, hold my hand and guide me today.

Some essential oils help to protect the skin. Palmarosa, Sandalwood and Myrrh help the skin retain moisture.
Try creating a blend in a hand or body lotion.Palmarosa, with it's regenerating effects is also ideal

Fw: DailyOM: Going Away to Go Within

Going Away to Go Within
Retreat

Going on retreat is a time to cocoon so that we may emerge ready to return to our lives with a new perspective.

Occasionally, we need to pause - and step away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. One way to do this is to get away from our daily life and go on retreat. Far more than a vacation, a retreat offers us time to ourselves to rest, heal, reflect, and renew our spirit. It is a time to cocoon so that we may emerge renewed, refreshed, and ready to return to our everyday lives with a new perspective. A retreat gives us time for uninterrupted meditation so that we may go deep within and spend time with ourselves.

A retreat may offer quiet, solitude, and sometimes even silence. Retreats often take place in humble dwellings with simple fare so that our senses may be reawakened to the beauty of unadorned tastes and the sights and sounds of nature. When we spend days in contemplation, we can more easily hear our heart when it speaks to us. We also are able to really listen when a bird sings, deeply breathe in the smell of flowers, grass, or earth, and delight in a soft breeze blowing on our cheek. When we go on retreat we have time to connect to the sacred geometry of a labyrinth, discover epiphanies through asanas, or take a long, reflective walk through the woods where we can give each step our full attention.

Without the pull of deadlines, relationships, the Internet, or other media, we give ourselves time to go deep into our own solitude where we can fully reflect on our joys, sorrows, and fears, owning and releasing them as needed. We may even come to know and understand our life path more deeply. Hopefully, when we return home, we can take a little bit of this time alone back with us and create the space for deep reflection on a daily basis. We also may come back to our life renewed and ready to take on the world. The beauty of going on retreat is that no matter where you go or how long you stay, you'll always meet yourself when you get there.

Brothers and sisters of the drum Midsummer Eve

Brothers and sisters of the drum,
We are here to honor the Gods.

Joyous summer of drumming, dancing, & chanting is coming your way.
Midsummer is the classic time to perform magicks of all kinds.

With Joyous summer of drumming, dancing, & chanting.
Let our hands lift in praise of You
the Lord and Lady!

I celebrate the noon of summer with mystic drumming rites..
The sacred Fire That dances within.
As we dedicate ourselves
To the Great Goddess
And the Horned God.

Midsummer drumming Celebrate the power of your Sun
When the Sun is high in the sky,
sun standing still.

We our hands lift in praise
to the Star of the Sea, the Lady of the Moon,
the Lady, Who Controls the Tides.

drumming and dancing the Midsummer Tree
dancing at noon Midsummer Eve,

Midsummer, procession led by a giant dragon
to the Sacrifice of the Sacred King
who dies as the Sun begins to wane.

Fires are lit as a tribute to the Sun
Wheels, representing the Sun

blazing down hills..

Fire burn, burn bright
Midsummer fires burn in me
Spirits from afar close in
To cure, to curse, to hex, to bind.
The magick began as the magick we seek.

The Gifts of Pain and Sorrow

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Wed Jun 15, 2011 11:01 pm (PDT)

The Gifts of Pain and Sorrow

Adapted from Tips to Find Happiness, by Ryuho Okawa (Lantern Books,
2004).

Most people regard pain and sorrow as negative emotions, but there
are gifts of humility, compassion, and generosity in going through these
experiences. Pain and sorrow can have the effect of lending depth to a person's
character.

Humility and compassion are born of sorrow.People who have suffered deep sorrow will benefit in the following two ways. Firstly, they will have learned humility. Sadness caused by injured pride will allow them to learn the true meaning of humility.

Secondly, they will be kind to others. If they cannot empathize with
others, they will scarcely be able to express compassion toward them. Those
who are blessed by good circumstances and whose lives are proceeding smoothly
in particular have a tendency to be severe toward others. Their speech
becomes harsh and they condemn other people, making remarks such as: "Can't you
even do a simple thing like that?"

However, once people have experienced deep sorrow themselves, they
will have a greater capacity to forgive others because they understand
others' grief as if it were their own. This is something that can only be gained
through experience.

People who have experienced sorrow possess a unique form of
compassion. It is a form of light. This is what is meant by the saying,"When you
break through the bottom of sorrow, light floods out." The chief characteristics
of those who have passed through great sadness are a gentle gaze upon others
and a willingness to wait patiently for others' growth. Those who have difficulty
forgiving need to consider whether or not they have ever experienced
any deep sorrow or disappointment.

Pain tempers the soul and develops generosityAnother emotion that resembles sorrow is pain. These two feelings are like twins. Pain also has a positive side; it serves to strengthen the soul. Without pain, the soul stagnates; a life that just passes smoothly will not help develop a deep refinement of character. A soul that has been tempered
by pain expresses itself in a character that is well-developed. Pain develops
a breadth of character and creates a greater capacity to embrace others. A variety
of painful experiences will serve to increase the stature of a soul.

Instead of seeing sorrow and pain simply as negative, it is important
to see them as opportunities for awakening to a deeper understanding of the
Truth. It is through sorrow and pain that the range and depth of human
understanding grow.

Planets That Go Backward

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Planets That Go Backward

A planet that appears to move backward in the heavens for a period of time
is said to be retrograde. I've found retrograde periods uniquely helpful when
working magic and considering magical timing.

All the planets in our solar system appear at one time or another to
stop--this is called making a "station"--and then move backward. After a time, they
stop again, or station, and appear to move forward, or turn "direct."
Because some planets have faster orbits than others, the time they stop (station),
turn retrograde, stop, and turn direct varies from planet to planet.

But in fact, planets never really go backward--it just looks like they do.
Retrogrades are all an illusion created by the orbit of our own Earth.
Logically speaking, you would think that an illusion wouldn't affect reality. But
retrogrades have a profound affect on us. If you think about it another
way, there are actually many illusions that affect reality. If we consider the
human mind we know that if you "believe" something, then you can create that
something in reality. This is what magic is all about.

So what does a retrograde really mean to magical timing? When a planet
turns retrograde, it is the universe's way of saying, "Hey! Hold up a minute!
Time to take a breather. Sit back and just chill!" Of course, we can't stop
living just because a planet has decided to surf backward for a while, but in
magical timing there are ways to use these retrogrades to our advantage.

To be honest, I love to observe how people act during planetary retrogrades.
It's sort of fun to sit there, watch everyone run around with eyes twirling
in their sockets, while you just relax and smile like a Cheshire cat because
you and the universe are sharing an amusing secret, and you were prepared
for it.

MAGICAL TIPS FOR RETROGRADES

To take advantage of planetary retrogrades magically, you first need to get
yourself a good astrological almanac (or calendar). In it, you will see
symbols for each planet and a little symbol, an "R" with a little "x" through it,
indicating the time it runs retrograde and a "D" beside the planet when it
turns direct.

Once you've determined the time for each planet's backward passage, the
basic key for a retrograde is: "Don't start anything in the subject area that
the retrograde planet corresponds to." While you can finish things up, if you
start something that pertains to that planet's energy while that planet is
furiously backpedaling in the universe, then what you have started will more
than likely have to be done all over again when that planet turns direct.

Second tip: The day that a planet stations (stops) before it either goes
backward (retrograde) or forward (direct) all heck is going to break loose
involving the subjects that the planet corresponds to. Be prepared!

Third tip: The day a planet goes direct, your magic in the area of that
planet's rule will act like a slingshot. Although Witches and magical people
always try to be specific when working magic, be extra careful when a planet
turns direct. Check and double-check what it is you truly want to accomplish.
The old adage, "Be careful what you wish for," holds a great deal of meaning
here.

RETROGRADE PLANETS AND MAGIC

Although all planetary retrogrades have a general meaning, each will be
different in some way for every person because of: (1) your personal astrological
blueprint--your natal chart; and (2) what house of life the retrograde
planet is currently visiting. These two factors can get fairly complicated, and
if you haven't really gotten into astrology, the glyphs in your almanac may
look like gibberish. Still, you don't need to know everything to practice
general magical timing. If you come to like astrology, later on you can study
on your own.

Below I have described the general retrograde effects for the three fastest
moving planets--Mercury, Venus, and Mars--in relation to magical timing.
Although the slower-moving planets can have long-term effects on certain parts
of your life, their energies are not as noticeable because of the length of
time they take to affect your everyday activities. Mercury, Venus, and Mars
retrogrades, however, are quite noticeable in your day-to-day magical
activities.

MERCURY

Mercury is the planet of communication, short distance travel, early
education, and siblings. Primarily, Mercury is about how we communicate with
others; anything communications-centered is subject to snafus when Mercury stations
and turns retrograde. Computers go down, phones don't work, cars poop out,
travel plans are canceled, your alarm clock dies at 2:00 a.m.--the list can
be endless. A note you sent to a friend is misinterpreted and now she's mad
at you. Furthermore, aside from the Moon, Mercury is the fastest planetary
body in the heavens. Mercury is named after the Greco-Roman god Mercury--he
who is fleet of foot; he moves at a lightning pace, and he flips backward and
forward about three times a year so you will often encounter these problems.

In magic, work with Mercury rather than against him. Think before you
speak. This is a time to read, study, contemplate, work on projects you started
earlier, and tie up loose ends on things already ongoing. This includes magic
involving investigative procedures, learning, stopping the flow of gossip,
or reorganizing your notes for the big term paper that's due next month. As
computer problems often crop up during the Mercury retrograde, this will not
be the time to buy new software or try to debug your system. Also, be careful
of picking up computer viruses. If something is moving too fast and you want
to slow it down, especially in the realm of communications, you can always
place the Mercury retrograde symbol on a yellow candle, asking that as the
candle burns, the problem slows down until you have the answer you need to
proceed in a fair and honorable way.

Magical friends of mine have noticed that brief arguments flare up between
themselves and people they love the day before Mercury stations to turn either
way. On this day you might choose to sprinkle protection powder around your
house, boil a little basil in water on the stove to create sympathy, and
avoid altercations with those you care about. Because Mercury is such a fast
energy, these fights blow up and blow over quickly, yet the hard feelings may
remain until you resolve the problem over the course of the retrograde, or
during the following Mercury retrograde. When Mercury's fancy footing does the
backward shuffle you are free to think in an imaginative, independent way.
Use this energy for vision questing and daily meditations.

VENUS

Venus is the planet of love and relationships, but she also governs fast
cash, material items to which you have a psychological attachment, and your
short-term savings. When Venus turns retrograde, she basically pouts, is
irritable, and downright difficult. Because she affects relationships, her
stationing can have the same awkward effect on relationships as stumbling Mercury.
Your mother might not be as easygoing as she usually is, your boyfriend may
seem to be looking in a different direction, and your boss may have suddenly
become an unreasonable soul.

A Venus retrograde happens only every year-and-a-half and lasts about forty
days. During this time people are often attracted to the bizarre, unusual,
and obscure. If it's weird, a Venus retrograde will expose it, for good or
ill. A Venus retrograde is a good time to evaluate yourself and how you react
to your parents, spouse, boss, teachers, and friends. If you are trying to
find a lost friend or family member, the Venus retrograde is the right time to
start looking magically and mundanely. Magic practices for love and
relationships should concentrate on yourself--on doing your best to become a
better, caring, open-minded person. Other magic during this time can include
learning how to save money, how to spend money, and how to decide what you should
and should not value in your life. Talking to your guardian angel or totem
animal during a Venus retrograde about yourself, your life, and universal love
will bring you rewards.

During these forty days, people may be crabby, overly shy, socially inept,
or downright rude; yet, Venus is the goddess of creativity and things of
beauty. If you don't like what you see in the mirror, then work to change it. If
you hate the color of your apartment and had considered repainting it,
repaint it now. As you paint, concentrate on feelings of harmony and
self-assurance.

If you can't seem to hold on to your money, draw the Venus retrograde symbol
on a white candle, and place that candle on top of the money you do have.
Ask that you learn to slow down on your spending and hold on to your present
savings. If you think that a love relationship is moving too fast, draw the
Venus retrograde symbol on a blue candle. Place the candle over a picture of
yourself. Ask that the relationship slow down until you can think clearly
about who you want to associate with and why you are really interested in that
person. Ask for clarity of thought, Venus will grant your desire.

MARS

Mars is a particularly feisty fellow. He's the gasoline that fuels all sorts
of things, ranging from athletics to war. Another Greco-Roman god, he
doesn't take "no" for an answer in the nicest terms, but he is very useful when we
need action and lots of it! Mars turns retrograde approximately every two
years and two months, so when he suddenly stops short and retreats, most
humans are left with their mouths hanging open--just as it's a shock when someone
puts water in your gas; forget the "vroom," we are now permanently set in
putt-putt mode.

While a Mars retrograde doesn't exactly act like other retrogrades (what do
you expect, he's the macho guy who likes to do things his way), and while his
retrograde period can really confuse matters, in fact this time period can
be quite useful, especially if you are a magical person. Since activities
slow down, we can learn how to apply our energy in a productive way, rather than
wasting it on things that may have no real purpose in our lives. In
particular, matters involving karma--every action having a reaction--can be dealt
with now.

Because Mars moves more slowly than the other planets we have discussed, he
will probably hit only one department in your life in particular, and because
Mars deals with challenges and aggression, you may be presented with a bump
in life you weren't particularly ready for. Old angers, resentment, and
arguments have a tendency to flare up during a Mars retrograde. How you handle
that aggression determines whether or not you will grow spiritually and take
one step up that ladder of universal love. During a Mars retrograde it is
very hard to hold your anger at bay, and after the retrograde you may see things
that you missed because you were so busy looking at the problem that you
forgot to look beyond for the solution. During a Mars retrograde, you can't
force people to behave in a specific way--you shouldn't anyway, but it is more
pronounced during this time--and issues of right and wrong will seem muddy and
mixed up.

Magically, the smartest thing to do during a Mars retrograde is to talk to
Spirit every day about your mission in life. Mars energy, channeled properly,
is not a bad thing. Remember, he's the gas in your cosmic engine. You
would think that since Mars retreats and the general pace of life slows down,
people would be more complacent. Instead, they seem to go around squealing over
the tiniest things. Indeed, this is often the time when we must face our
cosmic bullies.

In the end, Mars retrograde energy can be channeled into personal fortitude
and actually provide you with the necessary cautionary roadblocks so you can
think before you act. During a Mars retrograde, Spirit will show you who
your friends are and who doesn't care a whit about you.

Moon Void-of-Course

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Moon Void-of-Course

The Moon makes a loop around the earth in about twenty-eight days, moving through each of the signs in two and a half days (or so). As she passes through the 30 degrees of each sign, she "visits" with the planets in numerical order by forming angles or aspects with them. Because she moves one degree in just two to two and a half hours, her influence on each planet lasts only a few hours, then she moves along. As she approaches the late degrees of the sign she's passing through, she eventually reaches the planet that's in the highest degree of any sign, and forms what will be her final aspect before leaving the sign. From this point until she actually enters the new sign, she is referred to as "void-of-course," or void.

Think of it this way: The Moon is the emotional "tone" of the day, carrying feelings with her particular to the sign she's "wearing" at the moment. After she has contacted each of the planets, she symbolically "rests" before changing her costume, so her instinct is temporarily on hold. It's during this time that many people feel "fuzzy" or "vague"--scattered, even. Plans or decisions we make now will usually not pan out. Without the instinctual "knowing" the Moon provides as she touches each planet, we tend to be unrealistic or exercise poor judgment. The traditional definition of the void Moon is that "nothing will come of this" and it seems to be true. Actions initiated under a void Moon are often wasted, irrelevant, or incorrect--usually because information is hidden or missing, or has been overlooked.

Now, although it's not a good time to initiate plans, routine tasks seem to go along just fine. However, this period is really ideal for what the Moon does best: reflection. It's at this time that we can assimilate what the world has tossed at us over the past few days.

On the lighter side, remember that there are other good uses for the void Moon. This is the time period when the Universe seems to be most open to loopholes. It's a great time to make plans you don't want to fulfill or schedule things you don't want to do.

What Does Your Ascendant Mean?

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

What Does Your Ascendant Mean?

From Astrology for Beginners, by Joann Hampar

Aries on the Ascendant
The Aries Ascendant gives an outgoing personality—one who is energetic and impulsive. If you have this cardinal fire sign on the Ascendant, you express enthusiasm, impatience, and a zest for life. You are not easily deterred, and when presented with a challenge, you rise to the occasion. Always seeking the next adventure, you are quick to lose interest once the excitement wears off. If you have Aries on the Ascendant or Mars (the ruling planet of Aries) in the first house, you should surround yourself with others who can pick up where you left off. Aries is the sign of new beginnings and is best at getting things started; then it is up to others to complete the task.

Taurus on the Ascendant
The Taurus Ascendant shows a quiet personality—one who is strong, steady, and cannot be pushed. If you have this fixed earth sign on the Ascendant, your appearance is serene, and you demonstrate patience and stamina. You are one who holds fast to your commitments, and you work hard to build a comfortable life for yourself and your loved ones. Your steadiness is comforting to others, and you may often find yourself in the role of counselor. With Taurus on the Ascendant or Venus (the ruling planet of Taurus) in the first house, you may be creative, talented, and artistic. Taurus is the sign of values, and when it is on the Ascendant, it helps you define what is of value. Money and possessions will be important.

Gemini on the Ascendant
The Gemini Ascendant shows a friendly, talkative, and charming personality. If you have this mutable air sign on the Ascendant, information is of the utmost importance and you never can have enough. At times you may feel pulled in two directions as you struggle to integrate certain aspects of your personality. You have a witty charm and a way with words, making you the life of the party. Always on the go, you prefer to keep busy and may find it difficult to relax. At times you can take on too much, leaving you overwhelmed. With Gemini on the Ascendant or Mercury (the ruling planet of Gemini) in the first house, you are likely to have good communication skills and a knack for writing.

Cancer on the Ascendant
The Cancer Ascendant gives a shy and sensitive outer shell. If you have this cardinal water sign on the Ascendant, you will make decisions based on feelings. Strong intuition can be characterized as a sixth sense, giving you the ability to tap into what others are feeling. With Cancer on the Ascendant or the Moon (the ruler of Cancer) in the first house, you are responsive and receptive to the needs of others. Your face may appear round, reflective of the full Moon. You may be restless, moody, or easily hurt, partly because you tend to take things too personally. A Cancer Ascendant is helpful in sensing public opinion; you may be involved with community, civic, or social issues.

Leo on the Ascendant
The Leo Ascendant gives a friendly and self-confident personality, one who walks with pride and assurance. If you have this fixed fire sign on the Ascendant, you are courageous and don't mind taking risks. Strong vitality and a positive outlook keep you going well into your later years. When Leo is on the Ascendant or the Sun (the ruler of Leo) is in the first house, you may roar from time to time but will never hold a grudge. Conscious of your image and reputation, you take great pride in everything you do. Should others fail to appreciate your efforts, you may feel wounded. You do not take kindly to criticism and will never forget a snub.

Virgo on the Ascendant
The Virgo Ascendant gives an alert and youthful appearance; you always look younger than your years. If you have this mutable earth sign on the Ascendant, you are practical and willing to work at something until it's perfect. You have a quiet and refined demeanor and a desire to be of help to others. With Virgo on the Ascendant or Mercury (the ruling planet of Virgo) in the first house, you are analytical and may feel your efforts are never quite good enough. An inquisitive nature and an interest in so many things keep you young at heart.

Libra on the Ascendant
The Libra Ascendant gives a charming personality and an artistic and creative flair. If you have this cardinal air sign on the Ascendant, your nature is to seek balance through understanding. You strive to see both sides of an issue, yet you can debate your point with finesse. Librans often are found in the legal profession. With Libra on the Ascendant or Venus (the ruling planet of Libra) in the first house, you cannot thrive in an inharmonious environment. You prefer to avoid disagreements and may try too hard to please others, to your own detriment. You can be indecisive for fear of making a mistake. Your interest in people and natural social skills attract many friends.

Scorpio on the Ascendant
The Scorpio Ascendant gives a disarmingly magnetic personality and an emotional intensity that is somewhat hidden. If you have this fixed water sign on the Ascendant, your emotions are deep and often misunderstood. Powerful is the keyword for those with Scorpio on the Ascendant. You are soft-spoken, courageous, independent, and self-reliant. You can struggle to transform some aspect of yourself—there is a devil-angel mentality. With Scorpio on the Ascendant or Pluto (the ruling planet of Scorpio) in the first house, you are apt to hide your true feelings. Even when you implicitly trust someone, you are cautious. Strength, determination, and focus enable to you achieve your goals.

Sagittarius on the Ascendant
The Sagittarius Ascendant gives an outgoing personality and a candor that often catches people off-guard. If you have this mutable fire sign on the Ascendant, you are always looking toward new horizons. You may prefer casual contacts to in-depth relationships and have many acquaintances but fewer friends. With Sagittarius on the Ascendant or Jupiter (the ruling planet of Sagittarius) in the first house, your optimism inspires others, and you may be found helping those who cannot help themselves. Fair-minded, you believe in equality for all. Freedom is important, and you avoid settling down. You love to take chances and live life to the fullest.

Capricorn on the Ascendant
The Capricorn Ascendant gives a serious, mature personality; often there were difficult circumstances early in life. If you have this cardinal earth sign on the Ascendant, you are a natural leader who can overcome obstacles others would find daunting. You have great ambition and achieve your goals through sheer determination. With Capricorn on the Ascendant or Saturn (the ruling planet of Capricorn) in the first house, you are more sensitive than you let on and, like your symbol, the goat, will keep climbing until you reach your goals. You are ethical and responsible, with a strong sense of duty. Money and position are important, and once you make a commitment to something, it is as good as done.

Aquarius on the Ascendant
The Aquarius Ascendant gives a positive, stimulating, and somewhat unusual personality. If you have this fixed air sign on the Ascendant, your enthusiasm inspires others. You are intuitive and original and have an eclectic interest in many different subjects, some of which may be unusual—like astrology, for instance. With Aquarius on the Ascendant or Uranus (the ruling planet of Aquarius) in the first house, you prefer to be left to your own creative devices. You cannot bear conformity and will go your own way. Anything that is new or cutting-edge appeals to you, and your insights may be at the forefront of change. You can be rebellious if challenged.

Pisces on the Ascendant
The Pisces Ascendant gives a gentle, thoughtful personality. If you have this mutable water sign on the Ascendant, you are receptive to those around you and sensitive to your environment. Empathetic and intuitive, you can be overwhelmed by too much input. Spending time alone helps you maintain inner balance. With Pisces on the Ascendant or Neptune (the ruling planet of Pisces) in the first house, you have strong psychic perception and a desire to help people. You may have musical talent or other artistic inclinations. You are romantic and have a tendency to dream your dreams rather than live them. However, when you believe in yourself, your dreams can come true.

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.

The Sun, Moon, and Rising Sign in Astrology

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Wed Jun 15, 2011 11:07 pm (PDT)

The Sun, Moon, and Rising Sign in Astrology

Sun

The Sun Sign is what most people are aware of because it is easy to calculate and used most frequently by the general population.

The symbolism associated with this planet shows us how we consciously express ourselves - I liken the process of discovering our 'Sun' to the process of individuation as described by Carl Jung. Depending on the placement of the Sun and its relationship to the other planets this may be a process that is easy or difficult. The actual Sun itself I relate to the animus.

Men tend to associate with the Sun more naturally/easily than woman because it is a masculine energy and psychologically represents the father and authority figures as well as identity and ego. Other keywords associated with the Sun include vitality and purpose.
In a woman's chart the Sun can represent what type of characteristics she finds attractive in a partner or that she experiences through her father and other important men in her life.

Moon

The Moon changes sign roughly every 2 1/2 days, depending on how fast it is traveling at the time. In Jungian terms I feel there is a strong link between the Moon and the anima.

Unconscious actions can be attributed to the Moon as well as feelings and needs. Instinct, emotions, nurturing and the feminine qualities are also represented by this point in the birth chart. The Moon shows us how we instinctively respond on a feeling level when we are being creatures of habit.

While the Sun strives to be different, the Moon symbolizes relationship and merging of identity.

Usually a woman will associate with her Moon sign because it is a feminine energy.

Men may experience the symbolism represented by the Moon through their relationship with the mother or nurturing figure while growing up. When it comes to relationships a man usually seeks out the themes represented by the Moon's placement within his birth chart.

Rising Sign (Also Known as the Ascendant)

Since the Rising Sign is calculated using the exact time of birth, e.g, the moment a person entered the world, then this point in the birth chart symbolizes the environment a person is born into. It can also describe the birthing process itself!

I use this point in the chart as an indication of not only what type of environment a person is born into, but also as a guide to how others first experience the individual.

Psychologically speaking, the Rising Sign indicates the type of persona (another term used by Jung) an individual has created for dealing with the world and others in general. In other words our Rising Sign is the 'mask' we wear when having to deal with new situations, people and the world in general.

Physically it can describe what a person looks like as well as the type of health issues an individual may face at some point in their lives.

There are many different ways to recognize your familiar, or familiars. Sometimes they choose you, sometimes you just 'know' when you find yours. I have several: Owls, spiders, snakes, bats, cats, and many of the night creatures I consider as my familiars. I am a Scorpio, a night person, and drawn to the strange and unusual, so night creatures resonate with my personality. I am posting an article about finding your familiar.

Okay everyone, what are your familiar(s) and how did they become so?

Finding Your Familiar

Finding Your Familiar
This article was written by Kaaren Christ

If you desire a spiritual connection with the animal world, but think the experience is available only to the spiritually evolved or gifted—don't despair. A "familiar" is simply a living creature having personal and spiritual meaning to you, and the experience is available to anyone who seeks it. No need for otherworldly experiences or altered states of consciousness. Personal awareness and desire are key, not revelation. A gradual opening of your mind and spirit to the animal world goes a long way toward enriching your life and adding another level to your spiritual practice.

Many people describe enjoying a spiritual relationship with a particular animal, but the nature of that connection differs greatly from person to person. Some describe their familiar as a "spiritual teacher," while others choose words like "companion" or "messenger." A common misconception is that familiars appear only in the form of animals commonly associated with magic, such as the cat, wolf, toad, or eagle. True, these animals seem to enjoy some measure of popularity, but there is no "rule." Such a belief creates a narrow perception of familiars and leaves some spiritual folks feeling left by the wayside. Just as we are all different, there is no "one" way to discover your animal familiar and no "right" way to honor or experience them.

We Are Family
If the idea of having a spiritual connection with an animal feels foreign or strange, try thinking of animals as members of your family. As human beings, we are mammals and already part of the wondrous, intricate web of living creatures that roam the earth, fill the oceans, and speckle the skies. It's easy to lose sight of the similarities between ourselves and other members of the animal kingdom, especially for those of use who live and work in large cities, separated from most animals. However, thinking about our similarities is a great way to raise our consciousness and feel more in touch with them.

Like different animals, individual human beings have unique natures that guide life choices, such as the number of people we live with or our preference for city or country living. Just as animals are instinctively driven to live in certain environments, we also choose "habitats" that meet our spiritual needs and desires. These choices include the type of home we prefer as well as what we surround ourselves with—such as art, music, and furnishings.

Moreover, like any species, we depend on one another, but the amount we socialize differs between individuals. Some people prefer life in highly structured social communities while others prefer more solitary wandering. Our dietary habits also vary widely. Some of us are carnivorous hunters, some vegetarian foragers, and yet others a combination of both. We also show a penchant for particular climates, some people longing for the heat and solitude of the desert while others seek the ebb and flow of the ocean.

Think about your lifestyle choices: your home, diet, and social connections. These things offer hints about the animals with which you share common traits. When you start to think about familiars this way, it becomes easier to find meaningful connections. Which animals seem to be in your "family?"

Search the Ordinary
Most of us know someone who has an extraordinary connection to a particular animal. Perhaps we have an aunt who collects feathers from every bird imaginable or know a photographer with an uncanny ability for capturing images of butterflies in flight. Although these strong connections do occur, many people experience more subtle connections.

Take a few minutes to think about animals you generally feel "kin" to. Think about pets you have kept as companions and what they brought to your life. Which did you feel particularly close to? How did they come to you? Were they orphaned? A gift from a special person? Did you have an instant love affair with them? Did they arrive unannounced at your home and refuse to leave?

You can also take a walk through the rooms of your home or flip through your photo albums. Does one particular animal reappear often? You might also look at your favorite movies and books. Do any of them feature a particular animal character? Many connections between humans and animals are subconscious until effort is made to bring them out.

Think in Groups
If you are still struggling to find an animal you relate to, try to find a category of animal that makes "psychic sense" to you. Consider the various groupings of animals and their most fundamental characteristics, and think about them in relation to spiritual principles of air, fire, water, and earth.
Mammals
This is the warm-blooded group of animals humans belong to. We give birth to live young and nourish them with our own milk. Most mammals live in groups and demonstrate quite elaborate social organization—much like us!
Spiritual Dimensions: Mammals are typically associated with earth qualities, but, depending on their habitat and individual characteristics, may also embody other aspects.

Reptiles
The cold-blooded group of lung-breathing animals has protective, scaled skin and are often very colorful. Many reptiles shed their skin, or re-grow body parts lost to injury or assault. Cold-bloodedness, normally given a "bad rap," embodies the nature of the adaptive, and suggests responsiveness to environmental changes. Reptiles lay eggs and are not particularly doting parents.
Examples: Lizards, turtles, snakes, crocodiles, and alligators.
Spiritual Dimensions: Depending on the individual animal, reptiles may represent earth or fire. Their changing and adaptive natures reflect spiritual growth and healing.

Birds
These egg layers feature feathers and lightweight, hollow bones. They have no teeth and high metabolisms—eating a tremendous amount of food and producing much heat. They are known for having beautiful voices and their unique ability to "speak." Complex behavior is found in migration patterns, courtship, and incubation behavior. Birds are often associated with oracles and predicting the future.
Examples: Songbirds, seabirds, carrion eaters, birds of prey, woodpeckers.
Spiritual Dimensions: Birds belong in the realm of air, the intellectual and realm of the spirit.

Amphibians
The word itself means "double life." Amphibians have cool skin that is usually slippery, making them hard to catch! They have four limbs and no scales. They have toxins in their skins, and are often brightly colored.
Examples: Salamanders, newts, toads, frogs, and caecilians.
Spiritual Dimensions: Creatures of both earth and water, these animals are highly adaptive, and embody many of both characteristics.

Fish
These egg-laying residents of water do not breathe air. They may inhabit either fresh or salt water. Some make their homes close to the surface while others exist in the darkness of the ocean's floor.
Spiritual Dimensions: Water. Realm of the emotional, the subconscious, and the instinctive.

Insects
The collective mass of insects on our planet outweighs the mass of all other species combined. These creatures have no backbone, and many—such as the bee and the ant—demonstrate elaborate social organization. They are also known for their ability to undergo incredibly dramatic metamorphoses.
Spiritual Dimensions: Because insects are found in almost every corner of the planet, they may be associated with any of the elements. A careful look at their individual characteristics will offer hints about their spiritual natures.

Animal Aversion
Are you someone who hates to get animal hair on your clothes? Never had a pet or enjoyed bird watching? Do you feel nervous around dogs and cats? Don't assume this means that you are unlikely to have a familiar! Quite the opposite, in fact. Often, we fear or avoid those things we repress in ourselves or those things we most desire, but are unable to accept. Examine your fears, aversions, and dislikes of animals; you may be surprised what you find there and how much you can learn about yourself!

Honoring Your Familiar at the Altar
There are many ways to increase your connections with the animal world, and one of them is to include them on your altar as part of your everyday spiritual practices. Again, there is no right or wrong way to do this. It is simply a way to turn your mind and spirit to the ways of the natural world and become more attuned to the animal kingdom. If after thinking about animal familiars you feel an attraction to a particular animal, you might find some pictures or representations of them to add to your altar or your home. Such items might include statues, artwork, sheep's wool, feathers, turtle shells, birds' nests, or snakeskins. You might also want to find poems or songs about the animal, and commit them to memory. If possible, find recordings of the animals' sounds and listen to them, noting the emotions that their noises evoke.

Being connected to the animal kingdom happens through conscious intent, meditation, and desire. There are so many things animals can teach us when we have eyes to see and ears to listen them. An early step to exploring spiritual relationships with animals is simply raising your awareness about them. Going to the library on a quiet Saturday afternoon and searching for folktales and information about specific animals is a wonderful way to increase sensitivity and enjoy an emerging sense of oneness with creatures of the animal kingdom.
