A monument to Witches

An interesting though odd report from Norway shows Queen Sonja being
guided through the inside of the "witch monument", at the Steilneset
memorial in Vardoe.

And in a rather dramatic and disturbing description (though no
pictures) of the persecution of witches is...

"...a glass case, U.S. artist Louise Bourgeois has created a chair
with flames come out of it on the site where, according to legend,
the accused were burned at the stake."

Awesome, what a moving monument, pretty cool of the Queen of Norway to visit it.

I like the idea of a "Witch monument". There should be more. Many more!

Thanks for sharing this Tim.

Fw: Report on Bonn Climate Change Talks

Hello Everyone,

I'm just forwarding this email on from an interfaith group I'm a member of.  If you embrace any of the Pagan traditions that view Divinity (Goddess/God) as being embodied in Nature (and the Natural World), then you may like to read this.
Personally, I hold Earth's ecosystems sacred.  And I know that human-induced Climate Change is detrimentally jeopardizing all of Earth's ecosystems - indeed all of Life on Earth.  We are all Earth's children - and all have the responsibility to do something about this.  It is time that we begin to own that responsibility.  It is time that we remind politicians, corporations, etc, that they must own that responsibility.

For Earth's sake - if we value Nature as sacred - then we must all act now in Her service.

Report on Bonn Climate Change talks

Dear FEN members

This article below appeared in the Guardian before the Bonn Conference.

Attached is Columban Sean McDonagh's summary of the Bonn Conference which

demonstrates the hard work that must we must all be engaged in our faith

communities to bring about change of hearts and minds and hands.

Peace and Blessings

Anne Lanyon

Worst ever carbon emissions leave climate on the brink

* Fiona Harvey <http://www.guardian .co.uk/profile/ fiona-harvey> ,

Environment correspondent

* guardian.co. uk <http://www.guardian .co.uk> , Sunday 29 May 2011

22.00 BST

Economic recession has failed to curb rising emissions, undermining hope of

keeping global warming to safe levels

Greenhouse gas emissions increased by a record amount last year, to the

highest carbon output in history, putting hopes of holding global warming to

safe levels all but out of reach, according to unpublished estimates from

the International Energy Agency <http://www.iea. org/> .

The shock rise means the goal of preventing a temperature rise of more than

2 degrees Celsius

<http://www.guardian .co.uk/environme nt/2009/dec/ 18/copenhagen- five-climate- s

cenarios> - which scientists say is the threshold for potentially "dangerous

climate change" - is likely to be just "a nice Utopia", according to Fatih

Birol <http://www.iea. org/journalists/ photos/Birol/ CV_Birol_ F.pdf> , chief

economist of the IEA. It also shows the most serious global recession

<http://www.guardian .co.uk/business/ globalrecession> for 80 years has had

only a minimal effect on emissions, contrary to some predictions.

Last year, a record 30.6 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide poured into the

atmosphere, mainly from burning fossil fuel - a rise of 1.6Gt on 2009,

according to estimates from the IEA regarded as the gold standard for

emissions data.

"I am very worried. This is the worst news on emissions," Birol told the

Guardian. "It is becoming extremely challenging to remain below 2 degrees.

The prospect is getting bleaker. That is what the numbers say."

Professor Lord Stern of the London School of Economics, the author of the

influential Stern Report into the economics of climate change

<http://www.guardian .co.uk/environme nt/climate- change> for the Treasury in

2006, warned that if the pattern continued, the results would be dire.

"These figures indicate that [emissions] are now close to being back on a

'business as usual' path. According to the [Intergovernmental Panel on

Climate Change's] projections, such a path ... would mean around a 50%

chance of a rise in global average temperature of more than 4C by 2100

<http://www.guardian .co.uk/environme nt/2009/dec/ 18/copenhagen- five-climate- s

cenarios> ," he said.

"Such warming would disrupt the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of

millions of people across the planet, leading to widespread mass migration

and conflict. That is a risk any sane person would seek to drastically

reduce."

Birol said disaster could yet be averted, if governments heed the warning.

"If we have bold, decisive and urgent action, very soon, we still have a

chance of succeeding," he said.

The IEA has calculated that if the world is to escape the most damaging

effects of global warming, annual energy

<http://www.guardian .co.uk/environme nt/energy> -related emissions should be

no more than 32Gt by 2020. If this year's emissions rise by as much as they

did in 2010, that limit will be exceeded nine years ahead of schedule,

making it all but impossible to hold warming to a manageable degree.

Emissions from energy fell slightly between 2008 and 2009, from 29.3Gt to

29Gt, due to the financial crisis. A small rise was predicted for 2010 as

economies recovered, but the scale of the increase has shocked the IEA. "I

was expecting a rebound, but not such a strong one," said Birol, who is

widely regarded as one of the world's foremost experts on energy.

John Sauven, the executive director of Greenpeace UK, said time was running

out. "This news should shock the world. Yet even now politicians in each of

the great powers are eyeing up extraordinary and risky ways to extract the

world's last remaining reserves of fossil fuels - even from under the

melting ice of the Arctic

<http://www.guardian .co.uk/environme nt/2011/may/ 24/danish- commandoes- greenpe

ace-arctic-oil> . You don't put out a fire with gasoline. It will now be up

to us to stop them."

Most of the rise - about three-quarters - has come from developing

countries, as rapidly emerging economies have weathered the financial crisis

and the recession that has gripped most of the developed world.

But he added that, while the emissions data was bad enough news, there were

other factors that made it even less likely that the world would meet its

greenhouse gas targets.

. About 80% of the power stations likely to be in use in 2020 are either

already built or under construction, the IEA found. Most of these are fossil

fuel power stations unlikely to be taken out of service early, so they will

continue to pour out carbon - possibly into the mid-century. The emissions

from these stations amount to about 11.2Gt, out of a total of 13.7Gt from

the electricity sector. These "locked-in" emissions mean savings must be

found elsewhere.

"It means the room for manoeuvre is shrinking," warned Birol.

. Another factor that suggests emissions will continue their climb is the

crisis in the nuclear power

<http://www.guardian .co.uk/environme nt/nuclearpower> industry. Following

the tsunami damage at Fukushima, Japan and Germany have called a halt to

their reactor programmes, and other countries are reconsidering

<http://www.guardian .co.uk/environme nt/2011/may/ 25/europe- divided-nuclear- po

wer-fukushima> nuclear power.

"People may not like nuclear, but it is one of the major technologies for

generating electricity without carbon dioxide," said Birol. The gap left by

scaling back the world's nuclear ambitions is unlikely to be filled entirely

by renewable energy, meaning an increased reliance on fossil fuels.

. Added to that, the United Nations-led negotiations on a new global treaty

on climate change have stalled. "The significance of climate change in

international policy debates is much less pronounced than it was a few years

ago," said Birol.

He urged governments to take action urgently. "This should be a wake-up

call. A chance [of staying below 2 degrees] would be if we had a legally

binding international agreement or major moves on clean energy technologies,

energy efficiency and other technologies. "

Governments are to meet next week in Bonn <http://unfccc. int/2860. php> for

the next round of the UN talks, but little progress is expected.

Sir David King, former chief scientific adviser to the UK government, said

the global emissions figures showed that the link between rising GDP and

rising emissions had not been broken. "The only people who will be surprised

by this are people who have not been reading the situation properly," he

said.

Forthcoming research led by Sir David will show the west has only managed to

reduce emissions by relying on imports from countries such as China

<http://www.guardian .co.uk/environme nt/2011/apr/ 25/carbon- cuts-developed- cou

ntries-cancelled> .

Another telling message from the IEA's estimates is the relatively small

effect that the recession - the worst since the 1930s - had on emissions.

Initially, the agency had hoped the resulting reduction in emissions could

be maintained, helping to give the world a "breathing space" and set

countries on a low-carbon path. The new estimates suggest that opportunity

may have been missed.

Welcome to the Return of the PAGAN VILLAGE at Confest

Firstly if you are reading this and have never heard of Confest please click on the above or below link, to answer your questions and curiosity.

I would like to personally welcome you in advance, to your PAGAN VILLAGE your sacred spiritual space, a world within a world, that will be on offer at Confest this December & January 2011/2012.

This idea to re create the PAGAN VILLAGE has been on my mind for some time & was recently cemented when I spoke briefly, with the lovely Iain & Leharna. Thank you for the inspiration & collaboration, you truly are wonderful souls :)

Id like to invite you to share, to help to rebuild, to recreate, a new sacred space, that I believe is currently missing at Confest & is greatly needed. I really do LOVE CONFEST but after attending on & off for many many years, I have noticed community's separating with some becoming completely non existent, it saddens me to see the life & soul of spirituality generally lessening.
I would like to take a stand, WE as a spiritual pagan collective, say bring back the PAGAN VILLAGE.

If you would like to camp in a spiritual loving space that holds regular rituals, pagan based workshops, healing's, spell castings, Witchcraft practices & other PAGAN services, then please show your support by adding your self to this event.

THE PAGAN VILLAGE is a place to camp, to laugh, meet, greet, worship, honor & rest, with complete faith, safety & knowledge, in knowing that the space is a 100% DRUG & ALCOHOL FREE ZONE.
Among that point I have listed some other important features in point form below, please share if there is something you wish to see at your Village, or not see ? Even though I'm taking the reins with this (& only because I don't see any one else doing it ) its very much a collective & help is greatly needed to build the space, (after all I'm very short lol ) & to maintain it throughout Confest along with offering workshops, lectures, rituals, seminars, performances etc etc for us all to enjoy.
So please feel free & encouraged to get involved with its recreation and therefore its success.
I will be attending DTE meetings at CERES from now on, to discuss location & to pitch for an official PAGAN VILLAGE workshop & Ritual space. Would love for folk to join me ... & to Wish me luck .. for the good of us all )O(

I know, I'm with you, this has been discussed on face book and I myself love
a nice wine or two, however due to keeping in mind one rule for all ..
We are making the Pagan Village an Alcohol free space.. We can wander off to
many other spots throughout Confest to drink and be merry, yet those who
wish for a gentle peaceful and clear Confest particularly those families
with young babes and children, can be assured of such in the Pagan Village.

As a medic at Confest Ive sadly seen and treated many, who have abused
substances. Its a pity its not the confest of old, where we could be assured
we would be drinking responsibly, however due to the ever increasing
collection of muggle folk that attend these days, who do not think to
observe these simple and effective courtesys, it puts us all in a difficult
position when thinking whats in and whats out in the PAGAN VILLAGE.

Cheers Lizzy

Agreed Carteblanche!

I appreciate the sentiments also, but I'm not sure that they are generic enough!
My particular flavour of paganism would certainly not be welcome under those rules!
Nor would many heathen groups.

Maybe there needs to be (as in real life) either (ideally) one large group that tolerates all,
or a number of smaller communities (maybe grouped adjacently).
