Really? WHY would they suddenly think the fifth destruction would be metaphorical if they truly believed the first four were literal. More likely, they made predictions beyond because they expected a new cycle to start again. Personally I think their calendar ended in 2012 because it had to end SOMEWHERE, not because it's any prediction of apocalypse. But it bugs me when we look at a culture's mythology and then put our own spin on it saying, "No, this is what they REALLY meant!" so we can get an outcome more appealing to us.

The Legend Of The Five Suns
It is more likely that the Maya thought of the world-shattering "earthquake" in terms of consciousness rather than in terms of a physical event. After all, they themselves made predictions concerning dates several thousand years beyond the end-date of 2012. We can only assume that they meant for us to survive. In fact, each successive Sun or world can be seen as a step forward in the evolution of human consciousness. If this is so, then we can expect a quantum leap in consciousness when the Sixth Sun begins.

Much of the history of ancient civilizations is written in metaphorical terms, perhaps to keep in tune with the times. Maybe they had reached what they considered the ultimate enlightenment and didn't want to predict yet another catastrophe. I guess we'll never know.
