There is a definite rise in safety and security concerns around the world as the Sun in Leo makes a polarity to Vesta in Aquarius (3:24AM PDT). Vesta is the key celestial body associated with protecting your assets, valuables and investments. It also relates to police and fire departments, ambulance and emergency vehicles, home and hearth, insurance coverage and rates, the Eternal Flame and sisterhoods. The early hours are filled with other important alignments as Vesta trines Saturn in air signs (2:21AM PDT), the Sun forms a supportive, 60-degree tie to Saturn (3:48AM PDT), and as Pallas makes a mentally-enhancing, 60-degree alliance with radical-change agent Uranus (5:16AM PDT). While you are trying to get your bearings from all this celestial maneuvering, the Moon in Libra is void for only 1 minute (4:57AM PDT) as it makes a flowing trine to Neptune in Aquarius before the lunar orb enters the intense waters of Scorpio (4:58AM PDT) for a 51+ hour
visit. Once the Moon is locked into its monthly Scorpionic embrace, it is the right time-period to don your Sherlock Holmes detective apparel to solve family mysteries and ferret out secrets. Searching for core answers to perennial problems is in; living a superficial life is out. If you want to delve into metaphysical and mystical subjects, take a giant leap of faith and jump head-long into those esoteric teachings. Watch out for an increase in stubborn feelings and fixed viewpoints - by friends, dear ones and in yourself - as the Moon opposes Jupiter (8:53PM PDT) and squares off with Venus (10:58PM PDT).

Love, Light and Abundant Blessings,

Mercury Retrograde  Aug 2 - 26

MERCURY RETROGRADE ~ August 2 - 26

Following the standard with any retrograde planet, this Mercury
retrograde period is a time for the prefix "re" -- reflect, rethink,
re-plan, review, retool, reorganize, redefine, re-examine, rewrite,
reread, repair. So reassess, as necessary and as much as you want, but
avoid starting new projects, signing any contracts, or entering into any
major agreements or commitments. It's easy to overlook details or
neglect to include information pertinent to the terms. A change of mind
is also common. If you must enter into an agreement during the
retrograde period, it is important to re-read all fine print, have
another set of eyes go over it, and get all your questions answered
before completing the transaction.

This period does not need to be daunting and feared or cause you to
suspend living your life in any way. Simply make allowances and/or
preemptive actions to minimize the unavoidable retrograde effects. Do
not underestimate the frustration, inconvenience, and havoc a Mercury
retrograde can produce, however.

Mercury rules mental processes, communication, commerce, trade and
affects all of these plus travel and electronics. Allow for delays,
especially on the station days [which, for this current period, are
August 2 & August 26]. Anticipate miscommunication so, ensure that all
details are understood. Ask detailed questions to prevent
misunderstandings. Wait until the retrograde period is over before
buying a new computer, mp3 player, cell phone, or any other electronic
items. If this is unavoidable, make sure the return/exchange/ refund
policy coverage is extensive enough that the purchased item can be
returned/exchanged should it requires repair or replacement later.
Consider buying the extra warranty offered, if the item is a costly
one.
The shadow period began July 18th. Make note of events and issues
beginning the shadow period. They may resurface around next month --
mid to late September. Perhaps, to find resolutions for unresolved
issues or to revisit situations simply for them to be reflected upon.

How might Mercury's retrograde transit influence on your world? Look to
the Virgo and Leo-ruled house/s in your birth chart.

Something to strive for...Have a fabulous Friday.

If you can start the day without caffeine,
If you can get going without pep pills,
If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring others with your troubles,
If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,
If you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you when, through no fault of yours, something goes wrong,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him,
If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,
If you can face the world without lies and deceit,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax without liquor,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,
If you can say honestly that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed, color, religion or politics:
Then my friend....you are ALMOST as good as your dog!

With Mercury retro and Moon in Scorpio, things should be verrry interesting this weekend. My Sun is in Scorpio, and my Moon is in Gemini, which is ruled by Mercury. When these aspects are taking place in the heavens, my life down here is, well, ups and downs to say the least. Scorpio Moons makes my 'evil twin' clamor for equal time, and she can sometimes be very, very bad. She is sarcastic, terse, unforgiving, and can make life for those around her difficult if she chooses. Mercury retro affects my communications--computer, phone, you name it. Extremely so. Hermes loves to play tricks on me, but he'd better be careful this weekend: I think he's met his match in my evil twin Bellatrix.

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.

Love Each Day,
Lady Nightshayde

historical inaccuracies, As a good discussion topic, an interesting line of research .. I agree with a number of the post here so far..There is a tendency to ignore historical fact
(Author) Patricia Telesco, books are not very well researched for historical fact.
The history in "A Victorian Grimoire: Romance - Enchantment - Magic by Patricia Telesco,is much more Romanticism than fact, the book is
more like a romance novel about a witch's cookbook. This is kitchen witchery but not history, the book is at it's strongest when it discusses recipes. (Author) Patricia Telesco, books are not very well researched for historical fact.  We can hope that and, like many pagan authors, her scholarship will got better as she got older.

I would argue that ANY book written by any author should be considered with a grain of salt.  Edain McCoy serves a purpose; if you are looking at personal gnosis --- one individual's interpretation of a pantheon or set of practices --- she's more than acceptable...and, like many pagan authors, her scholarship got better as she got older and as new developments occurred in related areas such as archeology, anthropology, and sociology.  At the time her earliest books were written,  Margaret Murray's theories were still accepted by most of the pagan communities as solid fact.  The reality and statistics of the Burning Times as a time of prosecution for witches and pagans was accepted as solid fact, as were the numbers who supposedly died.  More solid research and the increased ability to have access to records in other countries and sharing among the scientific community has since changed those interpretations.  Not all book publishers and authors
update their older works.  Isaac Bonewits and Margot Adler and, to some extent, Raymond Buckland have done so (in fact, for an overview of these very issues I highly recommend the latest revision of "Drawing Down the Moon").  At the time, the pagan communities were so small that most of us knew one another, even the authors who are now famous, and there was little need when writing to declare "This is my personal gnosis, not a reconstructionist's view".

Sometimes, too, authors were not always allowed to write in subjects which interested them or in which they had experience.   My copy of Patricia Telesco's "Victorian Grimoire" has a rather interesting nastygram regarding the policies of Llewellyn in that respect. She specifically states that she neither knew much about the subject nor did she use the material within nor was it an area of interest for her but she was contractually obligated to write on the subject.

In later years, authors did state whether or not what they wrote was personal gnosis.  Anne Moura, author of the Green Witchcraft books, says that several times, as does Buckland when writing about the Scottish tradition he created and also AJ Drew.  Cunningham was completely  and utterly ostracized for even daring to suggest that one did not need to belong to a coven in order to practice Wicca (he was not the first to do so but he was among the first to do so quite so publicly).  The founder of the Alexandrian Tradition reportedly copied most of the Gardnerian rites without permission and then parted the coven which was training with them...and published them.  Lady Sheba, at one point, declared herself the Queen of American witches and demanded that everyone submit their Books of Shadows to her for publication.

These things aside, it must be acknowledged that these older authors have still contributed much to Neo-Paganism.  They have been people's introductions to the communities, a jump-off point for further research, and on occasion the foundation for traditions and information we pass on which most folk are no longer aware came from elsewhere.

Also, remember that we're pagan _communities_. There is no single, united pagan community.  It's been tried and failed many times, mostly because those who brought the movement to the US and helped make it public were anti-authority and anti-organizational.  Each community is different --- different values, different practices, different ideas about what the pagan 'community' ought to be doing.  That means that a book you find totally unhelpful might just be someone else's key to understanding.
