I apologise for this question but, what did Buckland do to be shunned by the Wiccan Community?

Merry Meet I have a question, not sure where to direct it? I somewhat sponsor a group of Wiccans in a NC prison, a few are interested in the teachings of Buckland, however the group's leader refuses to touch the subject due to Buckland being shunned by the Wiccan community. Any ideas on how they can explore he Buckland path and still be respectful to their circle leader ??

I has was taught/learned that not every wiccan likes those that have been published. I think that maybe you could/should suggest that each of person might read a book of thier choosing in any subject of magick, and then give a report/decision on that book. That way if an indivial wants to read/study buckland they have a chance to.

Really? That's news to me, and I've been pagan for twenty-five years
and a Traditioned Wiccan for the remainder. Buckland is respected, as
far as I know, as a person among the Traditions, though is views are
not always agreed upon. To Buckland we owe quite a lot of what has
become non-initiatory Wicca (and yes, there were some people sore
about that because sometimes he made public materials which some
believed were not his to make public). I'd also be curious to which
Buckland materials you might be referring? His Blue Book is still
standard for many non-initiates who wish to study a Wiccan path. Some
of his other works are more witchcraft specific (for instance, his
candleburning ritual books contain directions for both a Christian
means of casting the spell and for a generic pagan means of doing so)
and he did eventually found his own tradition, which essentially
removes the more traditional Wiccan oligarchy and allows the initiate
to directly control his or her learning and advancement.
Were I you, I'd think twice about being involved with someone who
doesn't know the facts and hasn't checked them. As far as I know, Ray
Buckland is still very much welcome in most Wiccan communities and
still most sought after for advice, consultations, and appearances.
Further information:
"Drawing Down the Moon" (2006 edition) by Margot Adler
"Witchcraft from the Inside" by Raymond Buckland
" Triumph of the Moon" by Ronald Hutton
The facts are easily available to check for anyone with the time and
inclination. It sounds very much to me like you have been caught in a
power struggle against someone who simply either doesn't have the
facts or doesn't want them. Buckland, IMO, would be ideal for a
prison group primarily because he does NOT require an officiator.
Those who study his tradition can do everything themselves.

Thank you for the responses. I myself had never heard of Buckland being shunned by the community. I am not sure what the controversy is, other than maybe the leader heard of some bad publicity years ago before he got incarcerated. I'm going to mention that I got positive responses and maybe try to redirect him to the needs of his newcomers interests.
