I chose Deardre, it's a beautiful Irish name, from a woman with the gift of
prophesy, whom few would believe. Spelling difference came because i did not
want her fate to be foreshadow my life. WebWitch came about because i was
the Coven's Web junkie, and could find ANYTHING you were looking for online.
I'm a little stubborn like that. Mostly, everyone calls me Deardre.

That's why I chose "Katrina" for my name. I thought it was lovely. Once I'm
able to, I'll have my name legally changed to that.

A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

August 11 Tiu Chen, Laying Down of Needles, Star Festival
On the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, the Chinese honor the Weaver Woman who wove the robes of the deities. All needlework is admired on this day. Girls put a needle into a bowl of water and look at in the sunlight. They inspect the fineness of the shadow and the patterns it makes (of flowers or clouds) for predictions of the quality of their needlework. Threading a needle by the light of the moon brings a girl good look in needlework in the future.
At this time of the year, the star Vega (known to the Chinese as the Maiden) seems to cross the Milky Way (which the Chinese called the Bridge of Magpies) and join the star Altair (known as the Cowherd). The myth which explains these stellar movements tells about how the Cowherd and the Maiden were going to be wed. She was so happy she stopped weaving. The Sun-God ordered a flock of magpies to bridge the Heavenly River and ordered the Cowherd to cross to the other side. Now the two only meet once a year on this day, when the Magpies form a bridge for the Maiden to cross. But she cannot do so if it rains, so women pray for clear skies. They also ask the Maiden for skill in needlework and make offerings to her of cakes and watermelons.
Tun Li-Ch'en has a slightly different version of this legend, which he says is often enacted as a play on this holiday. The Spinning Damsel (identified with the constellation Lyra) was banished from Heaven to earth where she met and married the Oxherd (identified with the constellation Aquila). When she was forced to return to Heaven, he tried to follow but was blocked by the Milky Way. Only once a year, when magpies form a bridge over the Milky Way, can they see each other again.
In Korea, they say that few magpies are seen on this night as they have all flown to the Milky Way to form the bridge for the two lovers. In the morning, they can be seen everywhere but they are baldheaded as the lovers walked on them the night before. Rain is expected on this night, usualy a light, warm rain, which are said to be the tears of the lovers: tears of joy at meeting, tears of sorrow at parting.
This is the fourth of the five big festivals of Japan. In the country, people decorate for this festival by placing freshly cut bamboo sticks into the ground in front of their houses, adorned with pieces of colored paper, inscribed with poems praising the Weaver Princess, which are written by children the evening before. The following day the bamboo branches are thrown into the nearest stream.

August 11 Birthday of the Seven Old Maids
On the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, the Taiwanese honor the seven old maids, Chhit-niu-ma, daughters of the god of the hearth, Tsao Shen. The Spinning Maid is the youngest of these sisters, who are the protectors of children. Parents seek their aid when they want to conceive or solicit good health for their children, by making a promise to give to charity or sponsor an opera or puppet show. They also hang the banner of the Eight Immortals over the door and invite friends and relatives to a banquet. If the child for whom this aid is sough lives to be sixteen, the family at that time must fulfill their vow to the Seven Sisters by killing a pig.
Young women are supposed to lay out offerings for the the Seven Sisters (or sometimes just the Weaver Girl) under the moon. These offerings include incense, fresh flowers, fruit, face powder and other cosmetics. In Hong Kong, unmarried girls often form clubs to contribute money to create these displays. If a girl should marry after she subscribes, she must continue paying through the next festival.

Today's Goddess: Wohpe Shooting Star Night (Various Locations)
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Wed Aug 10, 2011 8:31 pm (PDT)
Today's Goddess: Wohpe
Shooting Star Night (Various Locations)
.
Themes: Wishes; Peace; Beauty; Pleasure; Cycles; Time; Mediation
Symbols: Falling Stars; Sweetgrass; Peace Pipe
About Wohpe: This Lakota Goddess's name literally means "meteor". Among the Lakota
she is considered the most beautiful of all goddesses. She generates
harmony and unity through the peace pipe, and pleasure from the smoke of sweetgrass. Stories also tell us that she measured time and created
the seasons so people could know when to perform sacred rituals. When a meteor falls from the sky, it is Wohpe mediating on our behalf.
To Do Today: Go stargazing! At this time of year, meteors appear in the region of
the Perseids, as they have since first spotted in A.D. 800. People
around the world can see these (except for those who live at the South
Pole). If you glimpse a shooting star, tell Wohpe what message you want her to take back to heaven for you.
To
generate Wohpe's peace between yourself and another (or a group of
people) get some sweetgrass (or lemongrass) and burn it on any safe fire source. As you do, visualize the person or people with whom you hope
to create harmony. Blow the smoke in the direction where this person
lives, saying,
"Wohpe, bear my message sure; keep my intentions ever pure.
Where anger dwells, let there be peace. May harmony never cease."
Afterward, make an effort to get a hold of that person and reopen the lines of communication.

Indian Rig Veda

Wed Aug 10, 2011 8:35 pm (PDT)
Night, driven away, yields her place to Dawn.
Here she comes, the white one, with her shining calf.
One, then the other:the other;always they move,
one after the other, two sisters on the same path.
They never meet, nor stand to talk to togehter,
but they are similar, though seeming different.
~Indian Rig Veda
The light is diminishing, although in most places almost imperceptibility. Since the year's longest day,
the summer solstice, many weeks have passed; the point of balance, the equinox, is coming soon.
At the height of summer, a memory of winter intrudes. Why think of it now? Why not just languish
in the heat and the brightness, pretending that nothing will ever change it.
But life is nothing but changes. Even as we enjoy the sultry weather of late summer, the clock ticks
toward the next season. Awareness of time's passage need not interfere with our appreciation of the
moment at hand. In fact, the more aware we are of how temporary each pleasure, each sensation,
is, the more we will take time to truly drink it in. Iced tea on a summer's night, the blink of fireflies against
dark leaves, the fragrance of late flowers and ripening fruit - all sensuous delights of summer are coming
to a close. Day's sister night is gathering her forces. Enjoy the day as it passes.

Fw: Introduction to Tarot: Week 4: The Major Arcana, Part 3
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Wed Aug 10, 2011 8:44 pm (PDT)
Introduction to Tarot
Week 4: The Major Arcana, Part 3
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism / Wicca
Last week, you drew three cards each day, using the first two thirds of the Major Arcana, and the suits of Wands and Pentacles. By now, you should be getting a good feel for the symbolism behind the different cards. Are you seeing trends in the cards you pull every morning? Be sure to keep track of what cards you get, and note whether they reveal anything to you throughout the day.
This week, we'll finish up the Major Arcana, and we'll look at the two other suits, Cups and Swords.
The Major Arcana, Part 3: The Realm of Change
Within the Major Arcana, so far we've talked about the first third of the cards which deal with our interactions in the material world. The next group involves our intuitive mind and our feelings. This final group of cards in the Major Arcana, cards 15 - 21, deal with universal laws and issues. They go far beyond the feelings of the individual and the needs of society. These cards address circumstances that can forever alter our lives and the path upon which we travel.
* 15 - The Devil
* 16 - The Tower
* 17 - The Star
* 18 - The Moon
* 19 - The Sun
* 20 - Judgment
* 21 - The World
The Suit of Swords
The suit of Swords is associated with matters of conflict, both physical and moral. It's also connected to the element of air, and subsequently, the direction of East. This suit is where you'll find cards that relate to conflict and discord, moral choices and ethical quandaries. Go There
The Suit of Cups
The suit of Cups is associated with matters of relationships and emotions. As you may expect, it's also connected to the element of water, and subsequently, the direction of West. In some Tarot decks, you may find the Cups referred to as Goblets, Chalices, Cauldrons, or something else. It's where you'll find cards that relate to love and heartbreak, choices and decisions related to emotion, family situations, and anything else that connects to how we interact with the people in our lives. Go There
Exercise: A Five Card Layout
Last week, we used about half of the deck to draw three cards. This week, your assignment is to use the entire deck, and pull five cards each day before you do anything else. Figure out how they apply to the events of the day, your needs and desires, and the environment surrounding you. Do you notice a certain suit appearing more often than others? Is there a trend towards Major Arcana cards?
Next Week: Tarot Spreads
Next week, we'll learn two easy spreads for you to practice with. Have a magical week, and in the meantime, keep getting to know your cards, and be sure to work with them every day!

Fw: DailyOM: Sustenance for the Soul

DailyOM - Taking Time for Yourself
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:
August 9, 2011
Sustenance for the Soul
Taking Time for Yourself
Making time for the activities that contribute to your spiritual growth has little to do with being selfish.
Modern life compels us to rush. Because we feel pressured to make the most of our time each day, the activities that sustain us, rejuvenate us, and help us evolve are often the first to be sacrificed when we are in a hurry or faced with a new obligation. It is important we remember that there is more to life than achieving success, making money, and even caring for others. Your spiritual needs should occupy an important spot on your list of priorities. Each task you undertake and each relationship you nurture draws from the wellspring of your spiritual vitality. Taking the time to engage in spiritually fulfilling activities replenishes that well and readies you to face another day. Making time for the activities that contribute to your spiritual growth has little to do with being selfish and everything to do with your well-being. Regularly taking the time to focus on your soul's needs ensures that you are able to nurture yourself, spend time with your
thoughts, experience t!
ranquility, and expand your spiritual boundaries.
It is easy to avoid using our free moments for spiritual enrichment. There is always something seemingly more pressing that needs to be done. Many people feel guilty when they use their free time to engage in pursuits where they are focusing on themselves because they feel as if they are neglecting their family or their work. To make time for yourself, it may be necessary to say no to people's requests or refuse to take on extra responsibilities. Scheduling fifteen or thirty minutes of time each day for your spiritual needs can make you feel tranquil, give you more energy and allows you to feel more in touch with the universe. Writing in a journal, meditating, studying the words of wise women and men, and engaging in other spiritual practices can help you make the most of this time.
Making time to nurture your spirit may require that you sacrifice other, less vital activities. The more time you commit to soul-nurturing activities, the happier and more relaxed you will become. The time you devote to enriching your spirit will rejuvenate you and help you create a more restful life.

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Wed Aug 10, 2011 8:48 pm (PDT)
Greetings Beings of Love,
There is a lot of talk about the ancient Mayan calendar, and how it "ends" on December 21, 2012 - marking the end of our world. This is not entirely accuate. The Mayan Calendar does not end, but the 12/21/12 date is significant. It marks the end of an era, and we are already feeling the effects of the bigger changes ahead.
The Mayan calendar can be used in many ways. Though it looks simple, it is a highly spiritual system that you can tap into to guide you on your path each day.
I will be facilitating a workshop, "De-Mystifying The Mayan Calendar" at Peaceful Paths this Saturday, August 13th from 3pm - 5pm. This very unique workshop will share many hidden ways of working with the calendar to help enrich your life and guide your journey. These ways cannot be found in books. You will know learn your Mayan birth sign and what it means for you as well. Space is limited, so please RSVP to me to reserve your space. General details are below.
Many Blessings....
