What's Happening Today:

Vinalia--Old Roman festival of thanksgiving for the first of the grape harvest; celebrated by offering the first fruits of the grape harvest and prayers for sustenance for all and marriage of Bacchus.

Sri Krishna Jayanti - Birthday of Hindu God Krishna (avatar of God Vishnu), beloved of Goddess Radha (avatar of Goddess Lakshmi).

Vinalia Rustica - This was the second or rustic Vinalia, when the priests plucked the year's first ripe grapes and asked Jupiter to protect the growing vines. Houses and gardens were dedicated to Venus. It's interesting that it falls so close to the Blessing of the Grapes, done under the auspices of Mary (see August 17th). Venus was invoked with this prayer, "I beseech Minerva and Venus, of whom one protects the olive yard and the other the garden." It was celebrated as a holiday for all vintners and kitchen gardeners and a time for picnicking outdoors.

It was also the dedication day of the temple of Venus Libitina, which was the headquarters for Roman undertakers and the poor people's burial ground, which also became a gathering place for undesirables. Farias, Helen, Calendar Notes, The Beltane Papers 1993
Rufus, Anneli, The World Holiday Book, Harper San Francisco 1994

St Sebald - An obscure saint who is the patron of Nuremberg. In one legend, he tells a peasant woman to throw icicles in the fire because there is no fuel. Thus he is invoked during cold spells. Blackburn, Bonnie & Leofranc Holford-Strevens, The Oxford Companion to the Year, Oxford University Press 1999

Rome: Vinalia Rustica, the festival of thanksgiving for the wine-grape harvest. Celebrated by offering the first fruits of the grape harvest with prayers, libation, and feasting for all. The Grape Vine feast honors Vesta, patroness of the hearth and home. Her eternal sacred flame was kept alight by the Vestal Virgins in her round temple in the Forum of Rome. Also feasted was the Goddess Minerva, since her patronage of science and wisdom inspired the techniques of winemaking.

1692: Salem, Massachusetts. In memory of the Reverend George Burroughs, Martha Carrie, George Jacobs, John Proctor, and John Willard -- hanged on this day on Gallows Hill for the crime of Witchcraft.

Today's Goddess:  Olwen Eisteddfod (Wales)

Today's Goddess: Olwen
Eisteddfod (Wales)

Themes: Arts; Creativity; Excellence; Sun
Symbols:  Late-blooming Flowers; Red or Gold Items; Rings

About Olwen:  A Welsh Sun Goddess whose name means "golden wheel," Olwen
overcame thirteen obstacles to obtain her true love (symbolic of thirteen lunar months),
and she teaches us similar tenacity in obtaining our goals.  Art portrays this Goddesses
having a red-gold collar, golden rings, and sun-colored hair that shines with pre-autumn
splendor on today's celebrations.

To Do Today:  Announced thirteen months in advance, this celebration preserves Welsh
music and literature amid the dramatic backdrop of sacred stone circles.  The Eisteddfod
dates back to Druid times; it was originally an event that evaluated those wishing to obtain
bardic status.  Follow these hopeful bards' example and wear something green today to
indicate your desire to grow beneath Olwen's warm light.  Or, don something red or gold
to generate the Goddess's energy for excellence in any task.

You can make an Olwen creativity charm out of thirteen different flower petals.  It is best to
collect thirteen different ones, but any cloth over the petals inward three times for body, mind,
and spirit, saying with each fold,

"Insight begin, bless me, Olwen."

Carry this with you, releasing one petal whenever you want a little extra inspiration.

Jupiter's Beard Spell for Safety
Incense of the day: Eucalyptus

St. Helena, whose feast day falls on August 18, is invoked against fire, wind, and lightning
strike. Her plant is called Jupiter's Beard, or sometimes sengreen or
houseleek. The custom is to hang the dry stalks of the plant from the
ceiling, or better yet, to cultivate the plant in your garden to protect your home. It is also said that a pot of Jupiter's Beard on your roof
will keep your house in money. For a spell for safety, center yourself.
Take a sprig of Jupiter's Beard and walk widdershins around the
perimeter of your house or apartment, saying:

Dear St. Helena,
protect this home
from fire and storm.

We Make Our Own Happiness

We Make Our Own Happiness

It's all too easy to blame a friend, spouse, or co-worker for the uneven
quality of our lives.  If only others would behave according to our plans
and dictates, then all would go well, we think.  What seldom is remembered
or even understood is that each of us has an individual perspective on any
single event--our own.  We need to stretch our minds and hearts to
understand an experience from another's point of view.  However, we need
never fully understand how another's perceives life.  We need only to accept
that another's perspective is legitimate.

Our happiness is not dependent on the perceptions or the actions of someone
else.  Nor is it dependent on attention, or lack of it, from a loved one.
Our occupation may be challenging and fulfilling; however, the joy we get
from it depends on the attitude we carry to the job.  In every way, whether
in the company of others or by ourselves, we make our own happiness.

And to this I quote Alice Meynell: "Happiness is not a matter of events; it
depends upon the tides of the mind."

"My opportunities for happiness is guaranteed if I opt it today."

Roman poet Virgil, the Aeneid

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Thu Aug 18, 2011 9:23 pm (PDT)

The Priestess invited the men to her high temple,
built in the side of the cliff at Euboea, where caverns
and tunnels make a hundred mouths through which
she would speak her answers to their queries.
Just as they reached her, the priestess called out,
and her face changed color, her hair flung out
in wild disorder, and her body thrashed about
in frenzy, she seemed to grow in size, and her voice
no longer seemed human as she spoke her oracles.
~Roman poet Virgil, the Aeneid

The desire to consult oracles is a human one. Virtually every society known has
had its own oracular traditions, whether that be the throwing of bones or the casting
of cards, whether the omen be found in the flight of birds or the entrails of animals.
No matter how hard we may strive to be centered in the moment, there are times
when we feel an urgent need to know about the future. When we are in love, when
someone we love is in pain, when our future seems uncertain - those are times we
feel inclined to look for an oracle.

But the true oracle rests within the heart. No one, and anyone, can be an oracle to
the open heart. The fall of light upon an open book can speak volumes. An overheard
word, a fragment of music, these are as powerful as any runes or cards, for an oracle
is only the voice of the inner self.
