HI All,
One door closes while another one opens...Reclaiming put on a very successful 4 day WitchCamp (spiritual intensive) over Easter this year. In 2012 we are putting a WitchCamp (4 days) on in Queensland over Easter and another Camp in Healesville in October for at least 5 days. You do not have to 'be Reclaiming' to attend, just Pagan and adhere to the Principles of Unity. It is drug and alcohol free and deeply spiritual and connected to community.

Hi John, all
Actually, as far as the Gathering goes that *does* require a permit for both a capped number of attendees and also to have a bonfire as part of the traditional Beltane ritual. This year we will also need to provide Public Liability Insurance and have submitted a Safety Plan to Parks Victoria. Whilst it is absolutely a public camping facility, the requirements asked of Parks Victoria relating *specifically* to the MFAPG hosted by the Celtic Heritage Society are numerous. Wolf McDonald would know some further details pertaining to that as he has the unenviable job of chasing that up :P
The gathering was never commenced as a private celebration but as an invitation and opportunity for many varying groups of pagans to come together for a common purpose to share. learn and celebrate-schmooze and mingle :). Over the years many differing groups have hosted the main ritual-Asatru, Druids, Eclectic, Family, Wiccan, Dianic-etc etc. The only stipulation being a spiral dance and the Beltane fire. Otherwise, people hosting the ritual are free to express their worship. And yes! absolutely we have shared the crater with scouts, guides, grey nomads, campers galore and one memorable year with the local baptists camping retreat :P

Re Mount Franklin. As the mount is a public place, there really is no need for permits. It is open for anybody to camp there. In fact a few times we've had the "grey nomads" roll in for the weekend too.In '06( their 25th year),there were litterally 100's of campers there, pagan and not. What may have started out as a private celebration ended up being a major event.

I suspect part of it is because a lot of the apparent growth doesn't extend much beyond the interweb in a lot of cases. And frankly a lot of introductory texts are pretty sanitised, so people coming in via that route may be intimidated by some of the sabbatic practices and images.

We are still around, but after 10 tears and 9 Euphoria's, we felt that it was time for a rest. Seline still does the annual Strega weekend, but up til now I have been pretty quiet.
However, we are now doing a new event the 'Dance Nocturne', a weekend of Ecstatic, Transformational ritual and workshops. Places are filling fast, but some are still available as far as I know. (We've been away and offline for a few days and I haven't had a chance to talk with Seline since we got back).
Details for Dance Nocturne and the Strega Weekend can be found on Selines Face Book page.

Hi John,
No problems. I guess the red tape question is a sign of the times now. Its a requirement and we comply :) Sorry you felt that way last year-we all had a wonderful time with the Marquee, colourful banners, shared feasting and a lot of laughter and singing-despite the torrential and relentless rain which eased up enough for the ritual to be conducted. Otherwise twas luverly weather for ducks and pagans alike:P
Catch you soon
Mary

The reason why Australia doesn't have as big Pagan events as the UK – and why we can't support a shop like Treadwells (see below) is simply because we do not have a big enough population. Gosh, Treadwells has some fantastic events/lectures! ~Caroline.

Events and Courses Newsletter
Dear Friend of Treadwells, Greetings for the autumn equinox. Treadwell's have now passed our six-month anniversary of being in Bloomsbury's Store Street, and we are loving it as much as we had hoped. We are meeting and befriending many University of London staff, scholars and students - book-lovers all. Having a bit more room, we have expanded our range of magical equipment, supplies and herbs. Having a room exclusively for private <http://treadwells-london.com/ > tarot readings, these have proven even more popular. And, having completed the move, Christina took Treadwell's on the road to lecture in New York: the <http://observatoryrtarot_at_ treadwells. html oom.org/about/ > Observatory and <http://www.eastonmountain.com/ > Easton Mountain Gay Spirituality Retreat, and has been getting involved in <http://www.afan.vision/index. html uk.net/ > youth interfaith education. All in all, it's been a good harvest. Not resting on our laurels, however -- as you can see from the upcoming programme, we intend to have a lively and sociable autumn, and hope you will be part of it. Ring to book for whatever catches your attention -- Best wishes from us all here, Christina, Dianne and Kate

Floods in the Ancient Desert: The Ark, the Archaeology, and the Latest Discoveries
Dr Irving Finkel (British Museum)
Much-loved British Museum curator and scholar, Dr Irving Finkel, comes to Treadwell's to update us on some ground-breaking discoveries in ancient Near Eastern studies. The biblical story of Noah's ark is well-known to anyone who went to Sunday school, and the reality of a flood is a subject for the archaeologists of the region. Now, it looks like there is an idea of what such an ark might have actually been like. Irving Finkel, a charismatic speaker who works on the cutting edge of ancient scholarship, is Assistant Keeper of Ancient Mesopotamian (i.e. Sumerian, Babylonian and Assyrian) script, languages and cultures, in the Middle East Department of the British Museum. Red Magic: the Mystical & Occult Behind the Iron Curtain
Andrew Vee
In the Soviet Union, over the decades of communism, extensive research was done into essentially occult subjects and ideas. While the Russian Cosmists openly expressed hermetic views, experiments and initiatives tracked and studied things which in the West are classed as esoteric or occult. In this society, however, many studies were taken in a scientific spirit of such things as: astrology, telepathy, remote viewing, and others. Tonight's speaker opens up endeavours which are, to this day, virtually unknown in the West, including sources that has never been translated out of Russian. A native Russian-speaker who has encountered such projects first-hand, he is uniquely positioned to bring this material to a Western audience. Understanding Autumn Equinox: Magic, Folklore, Traditions
Suzanne Corbie
Spend the day immersed in the ancient pagan festivals of the autumn equinox season. You will be treated to folklore, traditional customs, inner spiritual meanings -- and for ways in which it is celebrated in the present as well as in the past. It includes illustrated lecture, handouts, exercises, seminar discussion, meditation and some traditional craft work. A ceremony completes the day. You will leave with solid knowledge and experiental workings which you can bring to your personal life. Suzanne Corbie has been studying and working with native British folk customs for over 35 years: she is a Wiccan priestess who has done fieldwork in several religious traditions. London's Lost Rivers: A Secret History
Tom Bolton
When people think of London's river, the vast thoroughfare of the Thames immediately springs to mind. But this ancient city was built around other rivers too - and traces of these still remain for those who know where to look. In Celtic Iron Age religion, every river had a tutelary goddess, so this talk opens up a new dimension of London - her spirits of place. A secret network of underground rivers snakes beneath the capital. The rivers predate the city and its people. The rivers may be buried, but they still flow underground. In some places they can be heard, or even seen. By rediscovering them, and tracing their courses, the way we see London is transformed. Using the visual and aural clues left in the streetscape, we can burrow down through layers of London history to river level, revealing the city as it once was. This one is for everyone who loves the hidden side of the magical place that is London. Tom Bolton is a researcher and writer, the author of London's Lost Rivers: A Walker's Guide: a series of ten walks tracing these hidden routes across London published in September 2011 by Strange Attractor press. Price: £7.00

Pictures from the Book of Sleep : Alchemical imagery in dreams
Paul Cowlan
'Individuals still experience the revelations and visions that were so instrumental in the creation and development of alchemy, and understand them in terms similar to those of the ancient and medieval alchemists.' (Jeffrey Raff) Alchemical imagery still occurs frequently in contemporary dreams; regardless of whether or not the dreamer is acquainted with alchemy. Kenneth Grant's Against the Light: Reflections upon the Work
Michael Staley
Tonight the head of the Typhonian Order speaks on some of the themes arising in the book Against the Light, written by the Order's founder, English occultist and writer <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ > Kenneth Grant (1924-2011). Dark Working Sorcerers: Illusion and the Occult
The London Magician
Magic, the occult science rather than the dodgy card trick, has been around for quite a while. Shamans, alchemists, cunning folk and fortune tellers have all plied their trades since the dawn of time. Some were just out to make a living, others to show that there's more to the world than meets the eye. Suspect techniques were sometimes used to turn lead to gold, manifest spirits, control men's minds and otherwise convince the general public that magic was real, and when they were, then they might have looked something like this… the things you will see tonight. Feats will be performed, spirits conjured, minds read. In this lecture-cum-performance you will meet John Dee, Michael Scot, Aleister Crowley, Roger Bacon and Rabbi Loew. By London Magician, who brought you the sellout show, 'Through a Glass Darkly.' Book early. Price: £10.00 Time: 7.15 for a 7.30 start <http://www.treadwel ls-london. > More informationcom/lectures_ and_launches. html#657

Ritual in Early Jewish Mysticism: Descent to the Chariot and Angelic Adjuration
S. Leigh
Tonight's lecture explores early Jewish mysticism not in terms of theory, as is so commonly done, but in terms of actual ceremony and ritual practice. How were altered states achieved, and what actions were taken by Merkabah (Chariot) mystics? The speaker is a practicing Jew with an ardent interest in the traditions mystical techniques, including practical Kabbalah. He brings to these studies a familiarity with Western Mysteries esotericism, so is able to make connections, comparisons and to speak in terms familiar to those who are not grounded in Hebrew or the Jewish religion. He returns to Treadwells, for his third lecture, by popular demand. Price: £7.00 Time: 7.15 for a 7.30 start <http://www.treadwells-london. > More informationcom/lectures_ and_launches. html#634

The Cult of Ku: The Occult Chinese Poison Cult
Andy Sharp
One of the most exotic of the many enticing tendrils of Kenneth Grant's Typhonian Trilogies is The Cult of Ku. References to an illusive coterie of Chinese adepts run through his work like dreamed wafts in a Limehouse Opium Den. Grant's hints that such a cult once existed in London: did it? In this talk Andy Sharp will trace Ku back to its roots as a form of poison magic in ancient China. He will explore Ku as a multi-layered monad, its syncretic correspondences with alchemy and UFOlogy, Grant's extrapolations, and its collision with the pulp horror of Sax Rohmer. Sharp will also discuss how this particular obsession of Grant has fortuitously intruded into his personal wyrd. Andy Sharp is published in Strange Attractor and runs the creative occult project 'English Heretic,' an imaginary organisation dedicated to the reification of malefic energy spectres and the adumbration of a modern qliphoth. Queer and Pagan: History, Theology, Society
Lou Hart
In this lecture Lou Hart reviews some of the historical context for a queer approach to magic and paganism, and discusses the transformations that occur in a queer magical setting. Intentionally broad-brush, queer paganism produces a potent brew of practices and beliefs. These work on the basis of self-identification, inclusion of 'otherness' and self-authentication , operating within a radical framework that changes the way we look at or act on things.Queer magic challenges stereotypes, polarity, authoritarianism, and the relationship with the surrounding world. Lou Hart is a queer witch and a founder of Queer Pagan Camp, which is probably Britain's most important and longstanding pagan network and event community. An experienced and engaging speaker, she has also written about the need to include queer approaches in magical practice (Magic is a Many Gendered Thing) and is a contributor to The Wanton Green (forthcoming) . Baba Yaga & the Virgin of Guadalupe: A One-Woman Performance
Xanthe Gresham
On a road trip through Mexico two deities dangle like dice from the rear view mirror… One is Baba Yaga - once a goddess of fire and fertility, now just a witch in Russian fairytale. With iron teeth and cannibalistic tendencies, she scuttles through the forest in a hut balanced on a pair of hairy chicken legs. The other is The Virgin of Guadalupe - Latin America's iconic Mother, who launches Mexican waves of tea towels, plastic bracelets and prayer cards across the country. Unlikely travelling companions perhaps, but only they can guide the way to the 360 degree hilltop epiphany, where you, me and the moment collide… Hold on as you ricochet through haunted hotel rooms, day of the dead celebrations, visions and peculiar folklore. Xanthe Gresham is an award-winning storyteller, performer and magical adventurer, who performs across the UK. Seeing her is breathtaking experience.

Bohemian Occult Subculture: Golden Dawn in Britain's 1890s
Dr Christina Oakley Harrington
The Order of the Golden Dawn is the late Victorian ceremonial magic organization which created the template for subsequent occult magic. Western mysteries, Kabbalah, Celtic mysticism, and even Wicca would follow forms it developed. It was an occult renaissance, sudden and powerful. Historians stress the founders' connection with freemasonry, giving the impression of a club of old Establishment men: gray suits and gray beards, boring and patriarchal. In fact, the Golden Dawn core group were young creatives – friends collaborating, inspired by the mysterious. Together they made art, made ritual, did meditations, had romances – tried to reach into something beyond the normal. These thirty-somethings were bright, feisty achievers with active social conscience. Seeing them anew, we can see the Order of the Golden Dawn anew. Christina Oakley Harrington runs Treadwell's Bookshop, and is co-editor of <http://abraxas-journal.com/ > Abraxas, International Journal of Esoteric Studies. Repeat of sold-out New York City lecture. The Famous Psychic Investigator: The Life, Adventures and Tragedy of Harry Price
Sarah Sparkes
Harry Price (British, 1881-1948) was the most controversial and famous psychic researcher ever to live. A celebrity in his day, he still deserves to be recognised, for he was an emblematic of an important facet of Edwardian society - the mass obsession with the supernatural. He did fascinating studies on haunted houses, investigated psychic activity, visited and tested mediums. He aimed to be scientific and impartial, and ended up discovering a great deal of fraud, as well as a few things he couldn't explain away. Tonight, Sarah Sparkes introduces this remarkable man, his work, his collection. An engaging speaker, Sarah is also an artist and researcher running a <http://www.spr.ac.uk/main/ > creative research project centred on the Harry Price Library now in <http://ghostsofsenanews/harry- price-library- appeal-reminisce nces tehouse.blogspot > Senate House. Eliphas Levi : Father of Modern Occultism
Dr Christopher McIntosh (Exeter)
Eliphas Lévi (French, 1810-1875, Alphonse Louis Constant) was a key figure in the development of occultism as we know it today. HP Lovecraft called him as 'that cryptic soul who crept through a crack in the hidden door and glimpsed the frightful vistas of the void beyond.' He influenced not only esotericists such as Madame Blavatsky and the Golden Dawn but also writers such as Huysmans, Baudelaire and Yeats. Famously, he popularised the Tarot as a magical system. His books are still widely read, and his Goat of Mendès drawing is now iconic. In this illustrated lecture Dr Christopher McIntosh talks about Lévi's life and work, examining his significance and enduring legacy. A night of esoteric history, alive and engaging. Dr Christopher McIntosh is an historian of Western esoteric traditions, on the teaching faculty of Exeter University's Esotericism Centre. His book Eliphas Lévi and the French Occult Revival, first published in 1972, has recently been re-published by SUNY. Price: £7.00
