to be honest I wouldn't reccomend any book written by Edain McCoy. Most of what she writes is just the same as any other author and what isn't ends up being questioned as valid by many people in the pagan community

Wiccan author that are not historical inaccuracies "Do not read or share" list

What books would you put on the list historical inaccuracies and why?
The "Potato Trap," a total lack of research in some Wiccan text. Some Wiccan text tell us that the ancient Irish had a religious
belief that involved the worship of the potato as a symbol of
fertility. For example Witta: An Irish Pagan Tradition (Llewellyn's World Magic)(Author) Edain McCoy © 1993 (p.82).
In fact potatoes are not native to Ireland.

Some author doesn't have a basic understanding of the matter they have written about they have so many errors of fact. Authors that rewrites history intellectually dishonest, full of absurd historical inaccuracies claims of people promoting their Reconstructionists faith. Bogus claims it spreads among their religious community like fire until it is known as a 'fact.' There are author who wish to create for themselves an entirely new religion, they are fabricating history to validate it.

Historical inaccuracies, does it invalidate a tradition when it makes historical claims that are blatantly false?

Do you  feel that bad research and bogus claims, and Historical inaccuracy undermines the credibility of us all,and the literature on which the modern Pagan movement was based?

I would argue that ANY book written by any author should be considered with
a grain of salt. Edain McCoy serves a purpose; if you are looking at
personal gnosis --- one individual's interpretation of a pantheon or set of
practices --- she's more than acceptable...and, like many pagan authors, her
scholarship got better as she got older and as new developments occurred in
related areas such as archeology, anthropology, and sociology. At the time
her earliest books were written, Margaret Murray's theories were still
accepted by most of the pagan communities as solid fact. The reality and
statistics of the Burning Times as a time of prosecution for witches and
pagans was accepted as solid fact, as were the numbers who supposedly died.
More solid research and the increased ability to have access to records in
other countries and sharing among the scientific community has since changed
those interpretations. Not all book publishers and authors update their
older works. Isaac Bonewits and Margot Adler and, to some extent, Raymond
Buckland have done so (in fact, for an overview of these very issues I
highly recommend the latest revision of "Drawing Down the Moon"). At the
time, the pagan communities were so small that most of us knew one another,
even the authors who are now famous, and there was little need when writing
to declare "This is my personal gnosis, not a reconstructionist's view".

Sometimes, too, authors were not always allowed to write in subjects which
interested them or in which they had experience. My copy of Patricia
Telesco's "Victorian Grimoire" has a rather interesting nastygram regarding
the policies of Llewellyn in that respect. She specifically states that she
neither knew much about the subject nor did she use the material within nor
was it an area of interest for her but she was contractually obligated to
write on the subject.

In later years, authors did state whether or not what they wrote was
personal gnosis. Anne Moura, author of the Green Witchcraft books, says
that several times, as does Buckland when writing about the Scottish
tradition he created and also AJ Drew. Cunningham was completely and
utterly ostracized for even daring to suggest that one did not need to
belong to a coven in order to practice Wicca (he was not the first to do so
but he was among the first to do so quite so publicly). The founder of the
Alexandrian Tradition reportedly copied most of the Gardnerian rites without
permission and then parted the coven which was training with them...and
published them. Lady Sheba, at one point, declared herself the Queen of
American witches and demanded that everyone submit their Books of Shadows to
her for publication.

These things aside, it must be acknowledged that these older authors have
still contributed much to Neo-Paganism. They have been people's
introductions to the communities, a jump-off point for further research, and
on occasion the foundation for traditions and information we pass on which
most folk are no longer aware came from elsewhere.

Also, remember that we're pagan _communities_. There is no single, united
pagan community. It's been tried and failed many times, mostly because
those who brought the movement to the US and helped make it public were
anti-authority and anti-organizational. Each community is different ---
different values, different practices, different ideas about what the pagan
'community' ought to be doing. That means that a book you find totally
unhelpful might just be someone else's key to understanding.

Vintage Technologies

Vintage Technologies We No Longer Use

Most of the technologies that we have used in the past have been eclipsed by the remarkable technology that we use today.

Advances in their design have occurred in tandem with the advances in technology in this digital era, with many large products being redesigned and miniaturized into amazingly small sizes.

While we may laugh at the fact that anyone ever found this technology to be cutting-edge, we can’t discount its place in history as a forerunner for all of the technology that wouldn’t exist today without its dinosaur ancestry.
Here is a quick look through history at vintage technologies that we no longer use.
1. “Super 8/8mm Handheld Video Cameras
Kodak invented the Super 8/8mm video format in 1965. Soon after, handheld video cameras flooded the market and the living rooms of people everywhere were filled with families watching the hi-jinks at Freddie’s sixth birthday party.

2. Betamax
Betamax was developed by Sony in 1975, a year before the ultimately more popular VHS format was invented as a response to Sony’s attempt to control the format of the industry.

3. VHS Format
Invented by JVC, VHS was the predominant video format by the 1980’s, despite what some argued was the technical superiority of the Betamax format.

4. Laser Disc Players
Initially marketed as “Discovision, laser discs were the format choice of tech enthusiasts who had the money to put together a collection until the DVD format came out.

5. Phonograph
The phonograph, or gramophone, was invented by Thomas Edison in 1877 and was on the mass market by the turn of the century. The gramophone was replaced by the considerably less bulky record player in the latter half of the twentieth century.

6. Turntables
Record players are still in use in DJ booths, recording studios, and radio stations all over the world.

7. HAM Radio
An estimated six million people are still involved with this hobby that began at the start of the 20th century. HAM radio operators communicate with each other over short wave radio. HAM radios have been featured in many popular movies, including The Shining and Contact.

8. Reel to Reel
The first tape recorders were reel to reel and were the preferred technology for professional sound designers until digital formats rendered them obsolete.

9. Cassette Tape Recorders
These devices were considerably less bulky then their reel to reel ancestors, and were used mostly for transcription.

10. Transistor Radios
Transistor radios typically only picked up on the AM band and were a ubiquitous sight in schools and businesses in the seventies.

11. Cassette Tapes
The compact cassette was originally developed for transcription purposes, and its users quickly realized that they could use it to record music and make “mixed tapes.

12. Boom Boxes

Associated with hip hop, break-dancing, and other aspects of eighties culture, the boom box was introduced in the late 1970’s as portable, all-in-one music devices. Earlier models took huge quantities of batteries and were very heavy.

13. Telegraph
The telegraph was the precursor to telex and fax machines. Used by shipping operators and for military uses, the telegraph required a skilled operator to transmit and receive messages.

14. Telex Machines
These machines used radio and/or microwaves to transmit information over the airwaves. Variations of them are still in use today for communications by the hearing impaired.

15. Wang Calculators
No, we didn’t pick that just for the headline. In the seventies, Wang manufactured mini-computers that were a cut above your standard accounting computer, with exciting features like a FORTRAN IV compiler.

16. Analog Telephones
While exactly who invented the phone is a topic of debate, the first patent was awarded to Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. They have evolved from rotary dial models to smart phones that we can use today to surf the internet.

17. PDA’s
Considered one of the biggest tech flops of all time, the Apple Newton was sold at a huge price point compared to other Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) that were on the market. Personal digital assistants were electronic timekeepers for the times when you couldn’t fit a computerin your pocket. The Newton’s development laid the groundwork for Apple’s hugely successful iPod and iPhone. Who’s laughing now?

18. Portable Televisions
Portable televisions, such as Sony’s Watchman, were an idea that came a little before the ability of the media to catch up to it. With a limited selection of channels, they never really caught on.

19. Walkman
The Walkman was invented for the co-chairman of Sony, Akio Morita, who wanted to be able to listen to his favorite operas on plane trips. It was initially marketed as the Soundabout in North America, but the “Walkman name was used for the product up until the present day.

20. Discman
Two years after the mass production of the Compact Disc, Sony released its portable player for it. While they were popular with audiophiles, who appreciated the quality of recording, earlier Discmans would skip and didn’t allow for the popular “mix tapes until it became possible for computers to “burn CD’s.

21. Pagers
Pagers were commonly used from the seventies to the nineties, when widespread adoption ofcell phones rendered them obsolete for mass market use. They are still used by emergency responders as they are not subject to network outages or similar disruptions in communication.

22. LED Watch
The watch pictured is the Pulsar, the first LED watch. The watch’s designer was inspired by the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, having worked on the timepiece props for the movie.

23. TV Watch
While the concept of this watch was attractive, it faced the same lack of channel availability issues as the Watchman.

24. Seiko Wrist Computer
The smartphone of 1984: this took the idea of the “computer watch to a whole new level. Think this is too much? Consider the nuclear watch, whose invention was rumoured in this Time magazine article. Be very glad that never happened.

25. Calculator Watches
The eighties saw watches infused with more gizmos than ever before. The most ubiquitous watch in geek culture was the calculator watch. Since most of us now have computers attached to our hips, it is no longer necessary. Unless you’re Dwight Schrute.

26. CRT Monitor
Just when you thought you were done with vacuum tubes in your computers, they put them in your monitors in the form of cathode ray tubes (CRT).

27. Massive Mainframes
While mainframes still exist, they generally don’t take up entire rooms or store information on magnetic tape.

28. Typewriters
While some writers still swear by them, most writers remember when they swore at them and have happily moved on.

29. Dial-Up Modems
The dial-up modem was used everywhere until cable internet and DSL became available to the masses. While they are still in widespread use, everyone who has one wants to upgrade.

30. Zip Drive
This short-lived technology was the bridge between 3.5″ Floppy Disc and CD storage.

31. Slide Projectors
These were classroom and office standbys for years, and were replaced by digital projectors and smartboards.

32. 8″ Floppy Disc
If you wanted to save one or two word processing documents, you could do it on these. Their smaller relatives are still in widespread use.

33. 3.5″ Floppy Disc
The 3.5″ Floppy took over from its bulkier cousin with larger storage and a less destructible design. It had largely been replaced by the late nineties by CD’s, DVD’s, USB drives and other more convenient computer storage methods.

34. Polaroid Cameras
While these cameras were largely replaced by digital cameras, the trademark has recently been purchased and the buyers are trying to breathe new life into the brand by hiring Lady Gaga as a spokesperson.

35. Home Movie Projectors
Super 8 home movies and educational films were shown on these simple projectors. While they are still used in some schools, they have been largely replaced by digital projectors and the fact that you can now burn most home movies to a DVD.

36. Vinyl Records
Vinyl was the dominant music format for the 20th Century. From your grandmother’s old 78’s to the single 45 format, vinyl was perfected over the years to be as acoustically correct and cheap to press as possible. While they are still in use by DJ’s and radio stations, records have for the most part been relegated to the garage sale heap.

37. CRT Television
The first widespread use of television was in Germany beginning in 1929, and the German Olympic Games of 1936 were the first to be broadcast on television. Televisions remained out of the reach of the middle class until the 1950’s, when their ownership boomed globally and television shows became more popular. Cathode ray tubes gave way to the technologies that we use for television now, making sets less bulky and furniture-like.

38. Tape Drives
Remember when backing up the computer meant changing the tape in the tape drive and letting it back up overnight? We’re so glad those days are gone too. The clunky old tape drives of the past didn’t store a lot of data and it would often take multiple tapes to back up important data. Old-school programmers started out as “tape-apes doing backups as junior programmers.

In the window of an Oregon general store:
"Why go elsewhere to be cheated, when you can come here?"

In a Pennsylvania cemetery:
"Persons are prohibited from picking flowers from any but their own graves."

On a Tennessee highway:
"Take notice: when this sign is under water, this road is impassable."

From the safety information card in America WestAirline seat pocket: "If you are sitting in an exit row and can not read this card, please tell a crew member."

Craft--Witch Craft

Witch Hat

Make this witch hat using poster board and a paper plate. An easy addition to a witch Halloween costume.

Age Guideline: 5 Years and Up
Time Required: 30 minutes (Does not include drying time)

The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.

Materials Needed:

Poster Board
Paper Plate
Crayons or Paint
Green Yarn or Crepe Paper
Cellophane Tape
Scissors

Instructions:
Cut the poster board into a large triangle shape with the bottom edge being curved. You want this large enough to make into a cone to fit on top of the paper plate leaving about 1 - 2 inches of the outside edge of the paper plate showing. Paint one side of the poster board and the backside of the paper plate black and let it dry.
Once the paint is dry, cut a large circle in the middle of the paper plate, leave a 1 - 2 inch ridge on the outside. Bend the poster board, black side out, into a cone shape so the bottom edge fits snuggly into the hole in the paper plate. Make sure the painted side of the paper plate is facing up! Make sure 1/2 - 1 inch of the bottom edge of the cone shape is sticking out through the bottom of the hole in the paper plate. Cut small slits every few inches, fold down, and tape them to the underside of the paper plate. You should now have the hat shape.
Now for the finishing touch - add green hair (or use whatever color you want)! Decide what length you want your witch's hair to be... Twelve inches is a nice length to try. Cut several pieces of yarn or crepe paper all the same length. If you are using yarn, you will want 30 at the very least. Tape the end of each "hair" in the inside edge of the cone where it is taped onto the paper plate as shown in the picture below. Tape the yarn side by side cover about 2/3rds of the inside of the hat rim.
If you like, you can decorate your hat with Halloween stickers or designs. You now have a fancy witch's hat to wear!

Magical Colors for Every Sign

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Thu Aug 4, 2011 9:16 pm (PDT)

Magical Colors For Every Sign

Although colors affect us on very subtle levels, their influence is
quite potent. Think of how energized we feel when we see the first
red buds of spring and how gloomy our moods can be after a long spell of gray winter days. Astrology teaches us that we are all born of a season, and that each of the signs also corresponds with one of the four element: Fire, earth, air, and water. The colors associated with each season and each element, then, naturally work well for each of
the signs, whether we wear them or choose a candle of that shade for
magical work. Here's a thumbnail description of colors for each of
the signs.

ARIES
Red is your color, Aries. Red stones, red gems, red clothes. That's
what you like best, and that's what makes you look and feel your
best. It also provides the energy you need when you're out there
doing battle, which is what your warrior personality loves best.
Remember, however, that colors affect our personalities and the type
of magic we project in subtle, yet powerful, ways. Whether you're
choosing it for a candle-burning or deciding what to wear, use red
wisely. Red belongs to Mars, your ruling planet, the ancient god of
war, and his is not an energy to be taken lightly.

TAURUS
The earthy colors suit your sensual disposition best. Green, of
course, is quite empowering for you, too -- it's the color of spring,
your season. You're ruled by the lovely planet Venus, so you'll also
be quite comfortable in pastels, but no matter what color you wear,
your beauty and grace are the stuff legends are made of. Burn green
candles to bring your natural gift for prosperity to life, and
pastels to stimulate your artistic, musical side. Carry malachite and
pyrite in your left pocket to attract the riches you were born to own.

GEMINI
Since you so love having choices, it's no wonder you love each and
every shade of the rainbow equally. Gemini is the sign of duality and
diversity, born to wear coats of many colors, so your taste in
clothing will show your love of variety. Agates are a good stone for
you, since they're associated with Mercury, your ruling planet, and
there are so many types to choose from. For candle-burning, look to
yellow or silver, colors as light as Mercury is on his feet. After
all, he's the only god with wings.

CANCER
Your ruling planet is the Moon, Cancer, so the colors she wears --
silver and white -- are the ones that naturally correspond with your
sign. Blues and sea-greens will also go well with your water-sign
disposition, and are excellent colors for candles on your altar. Stay
away from heavy, drastic colors that will overwhelm you. Remember,
water signs absorb from the environment, and yours is an especially
sensitive sign. To protect yourself, choose moonstones or sapphires,
and use chalcedony (a translucent, milky quartz) to ease depression,
smooth out your emotions, and ensure sweet dreams.

LEO
Red appeals to you most, Leo, and suits your temperament, too.
Remember that red is a power color, though, and you're already quite
a powerful sign, so go easy. You'll probably also have a special
fondness for yellow and gold, the colors of your planet, the Sun.
These are ideal choices for candle-burning, as they'll conjure the
warmth and light your sign is famous for. When it comes to gems and
stones, the royal ruby springs to mind immediately, but have it set
in that most royal of all metals -- gold. Nothing suits a legend
better.

VIRGO
In general, Virgo, since you're an earth sign, the earth tones suit
you best -- green, tan, and amber in particular -- lovely colors to
wear while tending your herb garden or sipping a cup of steaming
chamomile tea. The agate and aventurine are your birthstones, both of which are associated with Mercury, the planet you share with Gemini.
Agates come in all colors, but the type that seems to correspond best with your sign is the moss agate, a lovely clear stone with feathery
green fern-like threads running through it. This stone is also well
suited to gardening. For candle-burning, choose a deep green or pink
to promote good health.

LIBRA
Libra is ruled by Venus, so your best colors are soft Venusian
pastels. Pinks, lavenders, and baby blues are best, and match well
with your accommodating disposition. When you're looking for a color
to bring your natural vibrance out, however, wear royal blue. If
you're looking for a new lover, carry lapis lazuli, the stone known for its ability to bring together opposites. Burn pink candles to enhance your natural talents for balancing and attracting others to you.

SCORPIO
As far as colors go, there's no question about what's right for you,
Scorpio. You look best, and really feel best, too, in the two power
colors -- black, the color of night, and red, the color of passion.
Black is also associated with your ruling planet, Pluto, and red with
Mars, who took care of Scorpio before Pluto arrived. When candle-
burning, be careful with those colors, however -- they truly are
powerful colors. To purify or bring peace to an over-focused mind,
burn white candles. To ground yourself, use rutilated quartz, a stone
perfectly suited to Scorpio since it's a stone within a stone -- and,
like you, is full of buried treasure.

SAGITTARIUS
Sagittarius love purple, and that's the best color for you to use
when working with candles to increase your prophetic talents and
insight. Deep, royal purple is the color of wisdom, and Sagittarius
wants to learn everything. When you're choosing anything other then
clothing, you're more likely to choose a variety of colors than a
single one. This makes sense -- variety, after all, is the spice of
life, and no sign quite loves life the way that you do. Choose
sodalite, sugilite, and amethyst to quicken your wit and calm your
restless mind.

CAPRICORN
Ordinarily, the colors you wear best are the earth tones -- browns,
deep greens, and russets. Although your planet, Saturn, is often
associated with the color gray, and although you certainly can wear
that color well, keep in mind that color affects mood. If you don't
want to be toned down, wear something a little more lively. Burn dark
brown candles to ground yourself, and green to promote prosperity.
Stones that can be helpful to you in business include the bloodstone,
the green tourmaline, and the yellow zircon. Malachite draws
financial success.

AQUARIUS
Your color, Aquarius, without a single doubt, is electric blue. It's
noticeable even in the darkest places, you see, and you certainly do
love to stand out in a crowd. You're probably fond of other shades of blue, also (and they're all wonderful colors for use in candle
rituals). Try sky blue to help with communication, since your ruling
planet, Uranus, holds jurisdiction over the skies. Although your
birthstone is the amethyst, your energies seem to blend well with
stones that conduct ideas. Try aventurine to enhance mental clarity
and sphere, a greenish stone that's also reputed to help in
processing information.

PISCES
Neptune is your planet -- and she wears nothing but wispy pastel
gowns that swish when she walks. Those same pastels work equally well for you. Use spring colors when you're burning candles -- yellows,
pale blues, and greens, and carry stones of those colors in your left
pocket, too. If you feel you need a little more energy, toss a couple
of red stones in your right pocket. This is the projective side, and
red carried there will give your personal presentation a fire "lift."
Amethyst has always been your stone of choice -- it's the stone of
peace, and that's right up your alley.

Blue Candle Healing Spell

Blue Candle Healing Spell

Write the names of the people taking part on a blue candle. On a piece
of parchment write a list of the things you wish to have healed. This
can be specific or general. For you, someone else, or just the
universe in general. Light the candle and see the energy being sent into
the candle and leaving through the smoke and flame to carry out your will.
Hold the paper to the flame to burn. As it does say:

By full moon's light,
With helping hands,
I spread good health,
Throughout the lands.
Send energies far and near,
To heal this earth,
That I hold dear.
And all of those,
So dear to me,
With harm to none,
So mote it be.
Let the candle burn itself out.

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.

Love Each Day,
Lady Nightshayde

Clearing Crystals

Remember to clear your crystals. There are a few ways to do this. You can
use dry salt or salt water. If you use salt water, mix one tablespoon of sea
salt in a glass or ceramic container...do not use plastic. Also, check to
make sure that the specific type of crystal can be placed in salt. Not all
crystals can be cleared this way. Stones can be cleared by placing them in
sunlight or moonlight, in the rain or burying them in the Earth. Full
sunlight can clear stones in about an hour but some colored gemstones may
fade (pink, purple, light blue, Fluorite). You can also leave stones
outdoors on full moon nights but stones clear less quickly this way. Hanging
gemstones from the branches of a tree during a rain storm will gently clean
them. Gems can be buried in the Earth (or a pot filled with soil) for a
period of time. A full moon cycle is ideal.

What Are the Limits to magic?

What Are The Limits To Magic?

We've all seen in the media or read in books about amazing spells
that could take out entire towns, summons forces the likes no
mortal has ever seen, or a magician with near deity powers. They
make for awesome reading but obviously that's fiction at it's
finest.

But it has made me wonder what are the limits to magical power,
spells, and curses?

At one point, if you had told a human that he could talk to
someone half the world over from the convenience of his living
room, he might have laughed. Or said that travel outside of this
world was possible and might one day be commonplace you might
have find yourself committed and under treatment.

So like physical technology, could magic one day aspire to
fantasies of J.K. Rowling and other such fantasy writers? Or is
magic something else entirely?

I've heard it described as force of will. So does that imply that
magic is limited only by the will of the wielder or the physical
limitation of the wielder. So theoretically, the skies can be the
limits and one day we could become thunderbolt tossing, meteor
summoning demigods if we have the strength of will to do it?

Know Yourself

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Know Yourself

One goal of magic is to know yourself. In turn, the better you honestly know about yourself, the more effective your magic can be.

One way to get to know yourself is to take a personal inventory test. Not necessarily one which measures mental health, but one which measures character traits and preferences. The Kiersey Temperament sorter or the Meyers-Briggs personality test are among the best of these sorts of tests. These measure preferences, and can indicate how you tend to behave. In them, you are classified along four scales. Once you know your type, you can find many references to your type, and see how it fits into society. There are many websites on the Internet devoted to these topics.

Use what you have learned to determine one trait you want to change. Concentrate for a week on that negative trait, catching yourself, and trying to modify your behavior. Work on only one trait at a time, or you may be overwhelmed. But if you cultivate your awareness, you might find the problem may cure itself. Many of our negative traits are just patterns of habit. Becoming aware of them is half the battle.

It may be helpful to set aside fifteen to twenty minutes each day, right before bedtime, to think over your day. Look for things you'd like to change, how you might have handled yourself differently. In time, you will become more active in dealing with your personality and its quirks.

Dream interpretation is an excellent path for self-improvement. Write down your dreams in a journal. Many will deal with how you handled yourself, and possibly what you might have done better. Your higher mind is always watching and judging you and your actions. You will know if you did something that would not be in your best interests for soul development.

If you have a dream with uncomfortable emotional overtones, it might be a warning about something you did, and a caution not to repeat the performance. A dream in which you are deformed or crippled may be a strong commentary on your actions. What you did crippled you in some way, or kept you from your highest potential. Your higher mind can be starkly honest. Listen to it through your dreams.

Dialoguing with yourself can help work through difficulties. If you are uncertain about how to conduct yourself in a situation, talk it out beforehand. Do it in your bedroom, or while you are driving. Nobody else need hear, but just actually saying the words, rehearsing yourself through all the possible scenarios, will help.

You can use divination too as a tool for self-exploration. Ask a question several ways. In each answer you can find insight into the possible consequences of your actions. Meditation is another path toward self-understanding. Calming the mind and allowing your thoughts to flow freely can relieve stress. Ask for insight and understanding of yourself.

Any or all of these techniques can be helpful for getting to know yourself better. It may take time, but if you work at it a bit each day the awareness will come. Being fully self-aware and conscious about yourself and the world around you is what makes for a successful magician. Good luck!

Spell to Strengthen the Witch Within

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Thu Aug 4, 2011 9:21 pm (PDT)

Spell to Strengthen the Witch Within

This is a time of the rebirth of the root cultures of
many peoples. Ancient wisdoms that were lost or
obscured by the power shifts of history are now coming
into light through many channels. Native people are
discovering their
rituals, their myths, their shamans. The advances of
technology are adding to this wave of discovery in
many ways, such as through media and communication
(take the Internet for instance).

The image of the witch is at the root of our cultural
past. To embrace and affirm this aspect of ourselves
is to tap the power of tradition, longevity, and
cellular memory. Once we understand ourselves, harmony
sets in.

In preparing for your spell, first do some serious
thinking about just what the image of the witch means
to you. Make a list of all her qualities, her
powers, her names, how she looks, what she wears,
thinks, feels, etc. See her in your mind's eye with as
much clarity and detail as possible.

This spell should be cast three times, at the new,
full, and dark of the month.

Ingredients:
Large piece of parchment paper
Pen
Two purple candles
Moon Oil (Recipe)
Power incense
A small moonstone

Arrange your altar. Carve moons into your candles and
anoint them with oil.
Anoint yourself as well, on brow, heart, and hands.
Seat yourself comfortably and light the candles,
saying:

"With this flame, I awaken the Witch within me."

Light the incense. Close your eyes and breathe deeply
for a while, relax, and let go. Bathe yourself and
your aura in white light. Keep breathing deeply and
slowly as you begin to sway and weave, letting your
body move
into a circular motion. Empty yourself of all
distractions and anxieties. When you feel flowing and
peaceful, let your imagination fill up with images
of your inner Witch. Take up the parchment and pen and
make a sketch of her (don't worry about style or
quality; the simpler the better).

Write your impressions and ideas beneath the drawing.
Set this up between the candles so that it is facing
you. Take the moonstone and clasp it to your heart.
Keep breathing and weaving as you fill yourself with
the image on the parchment.

Draw the Witch image into yourself, see her multiplied
a thousand-fold,vibrating in every cell of your body.
Repeat the following incantation three times:

"I am willing to be different and strong
I am willing to be different and beautiful
I am willing to be different and free
I am willing to be different from patriarchy
For this difference
Is the same
Sameness
With the Non-Linear
World of Magick
The Goddess
Her forces
My dreams
The moon
My feelings
My creativity
My passion
My deep love
Of all creation...
And the only conforming
I need to do
Is Forming Creation
For I am form
And I am forming
To universal law
And therefore
Must survive...
And even though
I may at times
Feel alone
And misunderstood
I will remember
That I have sisters and brothers out there
Who are learning to be free
Like me
And that I am not alone
But all One
And that free women and men
Were respected
And loved
And will be again
And will be again
And will be
I will it to be
I will it to be
And so doth it be
Forever
And ever
So be it
Blessed be"

As you repeat this chant, let your words flow
rhythmically as you weave and sway, let your voice
create melody. Improvise, make new words if you feel
inspired.
When you feel complete, slip your parchment beneath
the altar cloth. Give thanks to the Goddess and God
and snuff out the candles.
The moonstone is to carry at all times. Keep it in
your pocket, under your pillow, or wear it in a pouch.
Whenever you feel the need, hold the stone
and rub it with your thumb in a circular motion. Think
or say:

"I am safe
I am me
All is well
Blessed be"

Tell no one of this spell until it has come to
fullness. Even as you feel your powers strengthen, it
may be best to maintain silence. Be discreet about
sharing your magick.

Magic of Summer Nights

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Magic of Summer Nights

Do you remember the thrill of being outdoors late on a warm summer
night when you were young? Just because we're grown up now (and can
set our own bedtimes!) doesn't mean we can't reconnect with the
gentle adventure, magic and nature-mystery of summer nights.

We've collected some of our favorite summer nighttime pleasures,
from classics like toasting marshmallows over a campfire or counting
fireflies to a few ideas you may not have thought of. Whether you
and your family are on vacation together or you're home alone, these
fun suggestions are great jumping-off places for your own enjoyment
of the brief, precious nights of summer.

Sky Magic
Pick a cloudless night, take a sleeping bag or blanket, lie on your
back, and look up. Take a guidebook, if you like, and see if you can
identify the major constellations. Different cultures have myths
about them that are fun to read, or you could make up constellation
names and invent your own stories about them. Moon phases are also
fun to observe. Did you know that in China there is no man-in-the-
moon but a rabbit, instead? Pick a full-moon night and try to see
it. There are millions of stories about the moon: read and share a
few.

Fire Magic
Campfires are a such a primal pleasure: something about the scent
and the sight of the warm leaping flames spells safety and
reassurance, a bone-deep ancestral memory. Simply sitting around a
fire gives a sense of bonded community, and becomes the perfect
venue for singing, drumming, or storytelling.

And of course you can cook over a fire: besides the classics
(marshmallows or smores), you can also toast bread over the flames
or roast corn or potatoes in the embers. You can also burn a handful
of dried herbs or incense, cedar, sage, juniper, or sweetgrass, to
honor the earth and send your gratitude prayers up to the sky.

Gazing into the embers is a time-honored way to relax and still the
mind, and you can see some interesting pictures if you allow you
mind and your inner eye to open.

Animal Magic
If you sit quietly in one place, nocturnal creatures will sometimes
show themselves to you. Fireflies are the easiest to spot (and
notoriously difficult to count!), but nighthawks, owls, and bats as
well as raccoons and opossums may also live in your neighborhood. A
flashlight may help you spot nighttime visitors, and you can
increase your chances of a sighting by leaving food offerings
nearby. (When my son was small, an opossum made a nightly appearance
on our deck to eat the cat food we left there. We named her Lucy
because she usually appeared when I Love Lucy came on Nick at Night,
and we were thrilled when she eventually brought her mate to share
the feast. We still retain a great fondness for opossums because of
our experiences with Lucy and Ricky.) There is no better way to
teach our children love and respect for wild animals than to quietly
observe them.

You can also do a microscosmic exercise: shine your flashlight on a
small patch of ground and see what happens there in the course of a
half-hour. Insects of all descriptions are apt to be very busy right
under our noses, if we only stop to pay attention.

Sound Magic
Listen! Is that a pair of wings beating over our heads? And that
buzzing, chirping sound--is that a cricket or a grasshopper? Do you
hear thunder in the distance? When we slow down enough to really
listen, the night world comes deeply alive and so do we.

Astrological Light Bulb Jokes

How many Arians does it take to change a lightbulb?

Just the one. You want to make something of it, eh?

None. Arians aren't afraid of the dark.

Only one, but it takes a lot of light bulbs. (*smash* *pop* *crash*)

How many Tauruses does it take to change a lightbulb?

One. But only if they can celebrate afterwards with a ten course meal and some great sex.

None; Tauruses never want to change anything.

One, but just *try* to convince them that the burned out bulb is useless and should be thrown away.

How many Geminis does it take to change a lightbulb?

Two. Plus a portable phone, an internet link, and a copy of the "Bluffer's Guide to Changing Lightbulbs."

Two (of course) but it will take all week, and when they're done the lightbulb will do your homework, speak French, and shine any color you want it to.

Two, but they never change it - they just keep arguing about who is supposed to do it and how it's supposed to be done.

How many Cancerians does it take to change a lightbulb?

Just one, but it takes a therapist three years to help them through the grieving process.

Just one, and they'll use a non-disposable diaper, too!

None: A Cancerian would worry himself to death with the problem.

How many Leos does it take to change a lightbulb?

Leos don't change lightbulbs, although sometimes their agents get a Virgo in to do it for them while they're out.

One: He holds the bulb and the world spins around him.

None: Leos are so enthusiastic they carry their own light.

How many Virgos does it take to change a lightbulb?

Virgos don't have time to change their own lightbulbs, they're too busy changing them for everyone else.

Approximately 1.000000 with an error of +/- 1 millionth.

Let's see, one to spot the bulb, one to record the time the bulb burned out and the date it was purchased, one to decide who's fault it is that the bulb burned out and ask why that brand was chosen in the first place, ten to decide to remodel the house as long as they're changing the bulb....

How many Libras does it take to change a lightbulb?

Er, two, or, maybe one. No--on second thought, make that two. Is that OK with you?

Why change the bulb? Isn't it more romantic in the dark?

Well gee, I don't know really. I guess it depends on the bulb, and where it burned out. It might perhaps just take one if it's just an ordinary bulb, or maybe two if the person doesn't know where to find a new bulb, or....

How many Scorpios does it take to change a lightbulb?

None -- they'd rather sit in the dark.

Why do you want to know? Are you a cop?

That information is strictly secret and only shared with the inner members of the hierarchical order.

How many Sagittarians does it take to change a lightbulb?

Look, ask me when I get back from India, OK?

The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got out whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out lightbulb?

A whole bunch: You can only keep them in the room long enough for each of them to give the bulb a quarter turn.

How many Capricorns does it take to change a lightbulb?

None. Capricorns can't afford new lightbulbs -- unless they're a legitimate business expense.

I don't waste my time with these childish jokes.

None. Why should I bother? It's probably just going to burn out again tomorrow anyway.

How many Aquarians does it take to change a lightbulb?

Well, you have to remember that everything is energy, so....

A hundred, but they'll all be competing to be the one to change the bulb and bring light into the world.

Like, why don't you just get out of my face and stop asking me to do all your work for you? I'm, like, really totally sick and tired of you asking me questions.

How many Pisceans does it take to change a lightbulb?

What lightbulb?

Huh? The light's out?

None: They concern themselves with inner light.

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.
