Dreams and out-of-the-body visions are intensified - courtesy of a Moon-Neptune flowing trine from Gemini to Aquarius (2:34AM PDT). However, this aspect also doubles as the start of a void lunar cycle that lasts until 3:32AM PDT when the Moon enters the sign of its natural abode - Cancer.

After 3:32AM PDT, home and family themes are predominant. Interest in ancestral ties, history, nostalgia and memorabilia grows. Gardening, cooking, baking and water sports are back in style.

Healing forces are on the march - thanks to Venus in polarity to Chiron (3:54AM PDT). Love birds and dear ones can find more romance and understanding via this opposition from Virgo to Pisces - particularly as the Moon trines Chiron (9:18AM PDT) and forms a supportive, 60-degree liaison with Venus (9:54AM PDT).

Be aware that Pallas backtracks into Capricorn (6:24AM PDT) - a cycle that lasts until October 26, 2011 when Pallas resumes its lengthy transit in Aquarius.

What can lead to challenges today around the horn are a Venus-Uranus off-kilter, 150-degree tie (4:23PM PDT) followed shortly thereafter by Saturn connecting with Neptune via a frictional, 135-degree aspect (5:50PM PDT). Both sky patterns can influence the entire day and large numbers of people. No one is necessarily immune from self-doubts, worries and the trap of pessimistic thinking. Do all in your power to inject some levity, enthusiasm and confidence into your mind-set, behavior patterns, and interactions with friends, colleagues and relatives. Stop playing any blame games.

Steer clear of overnight decision-making as the red planet Mars is back on the warpath - antagonizing both Neptune and Saturn within a two-hour time-span in the early hours of Thursday.

Love, Light and Abundant Blessings,
LadyHawk

Greetings all, I would like to know if there are any spells that will remove unwanted people away from you and your family, I have one person that will just not leave my family alone and I know full well she has cast something towards me and I have done everything I know of to deflect it, but she keeps doing things to my family. And the Sheriff's department where I live will not do anything until she does anything to physically harm any of the 3 of us. I don't want her hurt I just want something so that she leaves us alone.

Daily Feng Shui Tip for August 24

Daily Feng Shui Tip by Ellen Whitehurst for Wednesday, August 24

Only after years of intense debate amongst astronomers was the planet Pluto demoted on this date in 2006, igniting a wholesale redefinition of what scientifically constitutes a planet. We astrologers, on the other hand, mostly still contend that Pluto is the planet that holds sway over every aspect of how we use our personal power. As a professional astrological interpreter, today I want to pay homage to Pluto, the planet. Pluto is also associated with all things regarding death, rebirth and transformation. That last energy, the one that promotes and predicates rising from the ashes and positively transforming into a powerful being living to their fullest potential, is the blessing that invoking Pluto brings. As well, that same transformational energy is associated with the Fame area in Feng Shui. This philosophy says that Fame energies also relates to our future and our progression through life. This arena relates to recognition and rewards and impacts upon any enlightenment we are likely to receive. If this area is balanced and then activated with the appropriate Feng Shui, you will be able to proceed rapidly up a personally powerful ladder of success. Many of these same attributes are associated with Pluto. Download any image of the glyph or symbol that represents Pluto and place it in the Fame area of your main floor. Leave this symbol in place for three days in order to experience your own personally powerful transformation and rebirth!

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.

Love Each Day,
Lady Nightshayde

Banishing Spells

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Wed Aug 24, 2011 3:19 pm (PDT)

Banishing

These, if you hadn't already figured it out, have to do with sending something away from you or keeping it away. It's something like shielding, except more energy is directed towards a specific something, and the spell is designed especially to keep away that one thing. While shields are a block-all, they can't keep out the really strong negative energy, nor keep away most active psychic vampires, especially if you're not very strong magickally.

Banishing spells are generally more powerful during the waning moon phases, between the Full Moon and the Dark or New Moon. This is supposedly so because the Moon's power is diminishing during these phases, and the tides are flowing outward. To cast a banishing spell at this time is to allow whatever you're attempting to banish to be pulled away by the tide out to sea.

These spells are often made to be hard to break; you do not want whatever you banish to come back to you, at least not too soon. There is some bit of ethics concerning banishing people; I would only cast a banishing spell on someone if they were truly harmful to be around and would not leave you alone. Make sure you've done everything you can to keep negative people away before attempting to use magick to banish them.

Setting up your workspace and gathering the materials you need for the spell is always the first step. Most candles used in banishing spells are black, representing Saturn as well as the light-absorbing void which attracts negativity into itself, away from you. Fire and Earth are the most often used elements during a banishing; Fire consumes negativity and frees up space for positive energy, while Earth buries negativity and recycles it into positive energy.

Small pieces of paper or parchment are used in Fire-based banishings where negative thoughts, actions, habits, and behaviors you wish to be rid of are written down and then cast into a flame. Black ink is often used for the writing, for similar reasons as black candles. I usually keep a small red candle lit to represent the Fire element in itself; after lighting a small piece of paper with the negative element written upon it, I allow the paper to burn through completely inside a foil-lined stoneware bowl, which becomes a cauldron for the duration of my spellwork. After I am done, I wrap up the bundle of ashes inside the foil and throw it away.

Some Earth-based banishings involve writing down what you want to banish, then balling up the paper, taking it outside, and burying it. If you visit a temple in Japan, you might see a tree covered in tiny strips of paper tied around the branches; these are prayers, thoughts, and worries which people have written down and allowed the Earth to take from them by attaching them to a tree.

There are many different ways of casting banishing spells, as well as many different methods of symbolism and materials to use in these spells; do your research thoroughly.

Repelling Negativity

"Mama said there'd be days like this..." Sometimes it feels as if the whole world is against you, and you just want to crawl under the covers and die! Cheer up, take heart, and act like a Witch: stand up for yourself, protect yourself, and send that negative energy back to the vortex. There are a few ways to repel negativity, and none of them have to include harming someone else. Don't be a doormat. Work it!

When you're doing spells to dismiss nasty energy, remember to keep your intentions very clear (as always). You do not ever want to send harmful vibes out to anyone. Remember the Law of Threefold return. Even if you're willing to take on the consequences, it's a big black mark on your aura, and it's not worth it. Having said that, there are plenty of Witchy ways to keep yourself from soaking up psychic or physical bullying.

Essentially, there are three spellcasting methods for getting rid of the uglies. You can choose from banishing, binding, and redirecting. Banishing takes the energy out of the environment, while binding keeps energy or a specific person from being able to affect you. redirecting involves sending whatever is bugging yo back to its sender. Most of the spells below are a combination of techniques.

Before we go any further, I want to say that you should always take action in the mundane world before, during, and after you use magick to protect yourself, by acting in accord. If you really feel unsafe--if someone is threatening you with physical violence--then you need to tell someone.

If you feel totally low and miserable and it doesn't get any better in a week or two, please talk to someone. Again, magick is great, and it works, but if you're overwhelmed, talk about it! Take it from a survivor of depression: it's an illness, it can be overcome, and you need help to kick it.

If you're dealing with something a little less serious and you want to womp it with some juju...

Tools of the Trade

Several common objects are quite handy for repelling negativity, so keep them on hand at all times:

*Mirrors. Use one in your bedroom to protect your personal space. Save old compacts and get some craft mirrors from a large arts and crafts store near you. In the same vein, you can use anything that's shiny or reflective the same way you'd use a mirror. Silver or silver paint, water, and glass will do the trick, too.

*Black and white candles. Black and white both have protective color vibrations. Black is better for absorbing energy, and white is good for restoring peace.

*Salt. Sprinkle some around your room for protection, including around the windowsills and doors. You can also add salt to water, make blessed water, and use that.

*Cords, especially black, gray, and white ones.

*Actual elements like candle flames, bowls of water/ice/snow, herbs to burn as incense, and dirt.

*Nails, safety pins, straight pins, staples, and other sharp stuff. You can use these to make defensive talismans, to seal a spell, or to poke holes in someone else's astral ego trip.

*Rose water, a sage or rosemary infusion, orange water (made from orange flowers--get this at a health food store), water with lemon juice, or salt water in a spray bottle. Spray a wee bit in the air around your room to cleanse it.

How to Banish and Cleanse NEgative Energy for the Beginner

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Wed Aug 24, 2011 3:19 pm (PDT)

How to Banish and Cleanse Negative Energy For the Beginner
What is "Negative Energy"?

What does a mage, witch, or shaman mean when they talk about "negative energy"? They aren't referring to anything having to do with electricity or physics (although the jury is still out on that one); instead, they are talking about magickal, spiritual, or psychic energies that have dangerous and harmful. This can happen for many reasons, but it may be because:

Another person or group, using magick, can cast spells or perform rituals with the magickal intent of causing harm.
An area, home, or structure can become corrupted. Many people will talk about haunted houses and cursed locations, but these are extremely rare, and I would argue that in fact ghosts do not truly exist. I have never seen a true ghost, as in a self-aware and disembodied psyche of a dead human. What I have observed were recordings, impressions made by events where people had very strong emotions. What happens in these cases is a great number of extremely painful, angry, or destructive events happen in a given location, and the natural energy of that location is corrupted.
A person can become bound up in their own negative, aggressive, angry, violent, and/or depressed feelings. They can become a fractured and single-pointed being, unbalanced and hurting all of the time. We've all met people like this. If we are in a particularly bad place in our lives, we may be like this.

What Can Be Done?

Now that we have our terms defined, we can devise a strategy for dealing with the problem. For this, we use the I.O.B. Method, popularized by author Donald Michael Kraig in his seminal book Modern Magick.

Identify - First and foremost, you must figure out what the source of the problem is; a person is very different than a place, and an external threat, like numbers one and two above, is very different than the internal threat described in number three. "Negative energy" is really a category, which means each type of negative energy must be dealt with differently.
Objectify - You need to bring the negative energy out, call it into a form separate from the people or location it has been bound to. This involves controlled visualization, which is just another name for the imagination. This is one of the great secrets of magick. Adults and people in authority often instinctively tell children to curb their imaginations without knowing why they are concerned in the first place...it is because the imagination, especially the imagination of children, is powerful enough to mold reality.
Banish - You cleanse, banish, and otherwise get rid of the negative energy.

Step 1: Identify

When things are going right, we know it, yet when they are going wrong it's often hard to figure out what to blame. Some people want to reach for the supernatural immediately...and they are wrong to do so. Most of the external world obeys the laws of physics as science has explained them (the internal world, on the other hand...), and it's dangerous to believe that everything that happens is because of some malevolent force.
However, sometimes it is an evil supernatural force, or at least a negative one, one we don't want in our lives. What do we do then?
We figure out whether we have a curse, a corrupted location, or a corrupted person. This part is pretty easy. When the events associated with the negativity (bad luck, etc) happen to you, specifically, and follow you no matter where you go, you are probably cursed. If the events seem tied to a house, some woods, a crossroads, etc. and never seem to happen away from that location, you have a corrupted location (note: locations can be cursed, but this makes no effective difference in how to deal with it). If you find yourself experiencing only one or two emotions, usually rage and depression, then you may have become corrupted with negativity yourself.
Note: Mental and emotional illnesses do exist, and it's important to note that you may need medical, not magickal, help. However, mental and emotional illnesses can cause you to become trapped in negative energy, thus becoming corrupted, and this will help that. In any case, a cleansing never hurt anyone!

Step 2: Objectify

Now that you have the negativity localized to a person outside you, a location, or yourself, it's time to give it a face and a name. Find a place you will have some privacy for a while. Outside in nature is best, but anywhere is fine. All that exists is within nature.

Visualize the source of the negativity, whether it be yourself, another person, or a location. Hold them clearly in your mind's eye, and "see" the darkness as coiling, black smoke, so dense as to be made of darkness itself.
Say: "I call upon you, oh Darkness, by the Words of Darkness. I summon you, oh Pain, by the Works of Pain. I abjure you, oh horror, by the Signs of Horror. Come out! I summon, stir, and call you into visible form before me."
"See" the black smoke rise, pulled by the power of your words, and begin to come together in front of you, a great swirling cyclone of darkness. Allow the swirling storm of smoke to take shape before you (by this I mean "allow the form to come unbidden from your subconscious into your conscious mind"). If this form refuses to manipulate, repeat: "Come out! I summon, stir, and call thee into visible form before me" until it does. It usually either works the first or third time.
Once the form exists before you, examine it. See if it has any features that might give you a hint as to its identity. Then, in a strong, confident voice, say: "I command you by the power of my Will and my Word to tell me your name." Again, "allow" a name to come into your mind. This is the negativity's name. Don't worry if it's nonsense, our names are mostly nonsense, too.

Step 3: Banish

Now that you have the negativity bound up as a spirit, with a name and a form, you can banish it. Again, find a private place and be ready to do some magick!

Say: "I call upon you, 'insert spirit's name'. Come before me now and obey my commands." "See" the shape of darkness form before you. Notice that, between you, there is a small cord, like a string or a piece of webbing. It hangs in the air, connecting you, and this is the magickal or astral link between you and the negativity.
If it was you who is bound up with the negative energy, go on to step three. If it's a spell or a "haunted/cursed/possessed" house, bring up your right hand. Visualize it burning with a golden-white energy, as if it were composed of starlight. Bring it down on the cord connecting you to the spirit, cutting the cord between you. After all of this magick, the entity will most likely be happy to run off; if it came from a spell it will return to haunt its master, and if it was "haunting" a location it will simply disperse, cleansed by nature itself.
If you are bound up in negativity, don't feel bad; it happens to everyone. But our beliefs about ourselves define us, and our beliefs about the world define our world, so we have to make sure we take care of sick hearts and souls as much as bodies. In your case the process is different...you are not going to banish this entity of darkness, you are to reclaim it. Breath deeply, and with each breath, visualize the light of existence coming into you, filling you with a warm, bright, golden-white light. As you breathe, let that light fill you and spill out into the cord connecting you and the negativity. Let the light travel across this cord, cleansing it, changing it from dark to light, and then, as you continue to breathe the light in, let the light begin to fill up the shape of the entity. Continue until the negativity "spirit" is completely filled with light and you and it are the same color, then absorb it into yourself, cleansed. Note: You may have to do this several times to fully cleanse and reincorporate that part of yourself.

Final Word

With this simple bit of magick, you can deal with most low-level issues with negative energy, no matter which type. However, if something reacts strongly and aggressively to these attempts and you can't get rid of it in this way, you should contact your local occult shop because you need a professional.
Good luck, and as my other readers have found, feel free to ask questions in the comments; I almost always answer.

Banishings and Bindings

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Wed Aug 24, 2011 3:19 pm (PDT)

I realize not everyone is comfortable with some spells of this type. I have done these types of bindings and banishings, and am perfectly comfortable with my actions. Having the knowledge to protect and arm yourself is invaluable.

BINDING SPELL

This spell is for binding a violent or dangerous person from doing harm.
Photo of person to be bound OR a piece of white parchment paper with their whole name
written on it in black ink or dove's blood ink.
18 inches or so of black silken cord or black thick string, like embroidery floss.
A small glass jar w/ cork lid. A small white candle A small black candle
Light both your candles. Write the name on the paper or take the photograph in hand.
Fold the paper or photo into as small a rectangle as possible.
Take the cord in hand and begin to wind it around the rectangle, for a total of nine loops,
saying aloud in a clear, strong voice:
I (insert your name here), bind thee (insert name of offending person here)
from causing harm to (insert name of victim here),
from exerting control over this person, from influencing this person.
I bind you from making further plans with this person.
I call upon the angels, Auriel, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael
(or any other guides or deities you prefer.)
to assist me in this righteous cause!

A CANDLE BINDING

Get a large white candle, the kind that drips wax, and set it up on a tray.
Affix to it a photograph or other image of the person you wish to bind.
Make a ring of sea salt around it. Make a second ring with protective herbs.
Some dried rosemary from the kitchen will not break your bank. Or use sage if you like.
Fill the rest of the tray with images that represent what you are binding the person from: pictures of your family, keys to your house, legal documents, whatever.

If the problem is too complex for images, write what the person is bound from on slips of
paper and place them around the candle. Maybe they are gossiping and making your life
a misery. Write it down and explain what you want stopped.
Papyrus, or good thick paper made from cotton or linen work best for this.
I have pinched the first blank page of old books at sales!
Use red ink if you are angry, purple ink if you are sad.
Wrap the candle and the image with black thread (use cotton tread or linen or even wool, if possible).
Invoke Isis and "_____ the Binder With Linen Thread."
Say out loud what you are Binding the person from.
Light the candle and leave it burn until the wax begins to drip over the thread and image.
Burn it every day for a week, until the image is thick with wax.
Use this as a meditation device to direct your will to Binding the person.
You will have direct results if you have a just reason for this spell.
You can also Bind a person from harming themselves.

BLACK CORD BINBING

Use this to bind someone from hurting others and themselves.
ONLY do this if there are no other options available to you.
You need: Black cord-long enough to tie 3 knots in, A photo of the person harming others
First of all sit and cast circle.
Explain to the universe what you are about to do and ask if it is the right thing.
Think about how the person is hurting others and let the anger build up.
Then all at once say loudly: "(person's name) I bind you from hurting others!"
Then quickly tie a knot tightly in the cord.
Repeat the process three times or as many times you feel necessary.
When done, say: "Three times three, I bind you (person's name)!"
Hide the cord and photo in a safe place where the knots won't come undone.
Or better still, burn the cord so the knots never come undone.
(you don't really need a photo, but it helps make the magic stronger.

BANISHING SPELL TO STOP HARM

This will protect without causing the person bound any harm.
It is not a dark spell but a very potent protective one.
You may use a different oil if you wish to use as a banishing oil.
Rosemary may be substituted for Rue.
Materials:
1 black taper or image candle (gender depends on who you are trying to bind) nail
black cloth a large piece of black cloth red ribbon cotton needle and thread
Banishing oil (see below) loose tobacco
A small mirror that can stand by itself
If you can obtain hair or nail clippings from the person or a picture, you can use it in this spell.
Fold the felt in half and cut out a rough shape of the person you want to bind.
Make the figure large enough so that you will be able to stuff it after you have sewn it together.
Sew the pieces of the poppet together, leaving a hole through which you can stuff the poppet.
Fill it with cotton and tobacco, and if you have the hair or nail clippings of the person, add those to it.
Once it is filled, sew the opening closed. If you have a picture of the person,
staple or sew it to the front of the poppet.
Next, care the name of the person onto the black candle with the nail and add these runes:
Thuraz, Isa, Eihwas, a dark filled in circle to represent the dark moon,
bars like you will see in a jail, and a widdershins (anticlockwise) spiral.
Anoint the candle and the poppet with the oil.
Cast a circle, invoke the elements, God or Goddess you are working with.
Light the altar candles.
Light the black candle and adjust the mirror so that flame is reflected in the glass.
Hold the poppet out in front of you and say:
"Creature of cloth thou art,
Creature of flesh and blood you be.
I name you (name of the person you are binding).
No more shall you do me harm.
No more shall you repeat false tales.
No more shall you interfere in my life, nor in the lives of my loved ones.
By the power of the Gods and by my will, So mote it be!"
Draw an invoking pentagram over the poppet.
Now take the ribbon and begin to wrap the poppet like a mummy,
leaving no space unwrapped. Say:
"I bind your feet from bringing harm to me.
I bind your hands from reaching out to harm me.
I bind your mouth from spreading false tales to harm me.
I bind your mind from sending energy to harm me.
If you do so continue, let all negative energy be cast and reflected directly at you!"
Tie off the ribbon and hold the poppet in front of the mirror while you visualize all negative energy this person has sent to you being reflected back at them.
Wrap the poppet in the black cloth and tie with another length of ribbon. Say:
"Great Mother, I have bound this person
from harming me and my loved ones.
By the powers of three times three
By Earth and Fire, Air and Sea
I fix this spell, then set it free
Twill give no harm to return to me
As I will, So mote it be!"
Let the candle burn out while the poppet sits at its base, then take the poppet
and the remains of the candle far from your home and bury it deep in the ground
or toss it in the ocean and walk away without looking back.

BINDING
The purpose of this spell is to rid yourself of the negative energies of someone
who is mentally or emotionally abusing you. If done properly, it will not harm the
object of the spell nor will it affect his or her daily life in any way. It will simply
make the person powerless to mentally or emotionally harm you.
Materials:
-Small cloth doll, leave the head unstitched until you are ready to begin the ritual
-Needle and thread
-Some personal item from the person you want to bind (fingernail clippings, hair, handwriting sample)
-Black ribbon Black candle Cauldron or other fireproof container
-Sterilized needle Piece of paper and pen One candle at each quarter (optional)
Ritual:
Call the quarters - I like to use candles at each quarter to form a circle of fire for extra protection.
Light the black candle
Concentrating deeply on the person you are binding, place the personal object
inside the head of the doll and sew it shut.
Tie the black ribbon around the poppet's head, signifying the binding of that person.
''With harm to none, my will be done
I hereby bind you (name of person)
Your words cannot harm me
Your thoughts cannot harm me
You cannot harm me''
Continue chanting this or something like it until you feel power surging through you.
Visualize the person helpless to slander or verbally and mentally abuse you while you are chanting.
Now, to bind the spell -
If you have a sigil or a Craft name, sign it on the small piece of paper. If not, sign your own full name.
If others are working the ritual with you, they too should sign the paper.
With the sterilized needle, prick one of your fingers and put a small drop of blood over your signature.
Again, if others are working with you, they should place a drop of blood over their signatures.
(using a different needle, of course)
Fold the paper, light it on fire and drop it into the cauldron (which should be on a heat-proof surface!).
Meditate on the flames until the paper completely burns away.
If you are working with a group, join hands at this point and feel the power
surging around the circle as the spell is bound.
Ground and center
Release the circle. Thank the Goddess and God for their protection and power
Bury the doll as far away from you as possible within the next few days.

A SPELL TO BIND EVIL

To use this spell you must be able to picture the evil you wish to bind within your mind.
It is very important to be able to see strands or bonds or knots that hold it together.
Those are what you are going to release slowly.
Do note that this spell can take a long time depending on the strength and complexity of the evil.
You must imagine yourself undoing the knots or bonds and then say out loud as many times as needed:
"I bind this evil from doing harm
To those around us And itself
I bind it to be free But not harmful."
You MUST do this slowly.
If you do it quickly and try to overwhelm the evil it could overwhelm you
or just manifest on it's evil on the energy you are giving out.
If you plan to do this spell please be very careful and know that it is very draining.

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.

Space Balloon

The ultimate hot air balloon: Capsule that can take brave (and wealthy) explorers into Earth's stratosphere to launch in two years

By Claire Bates

Last updated at 8:02 AM on 24th August 2011

A helium balloon that will take enterprising travellers into Earth's stratosphere is due to take off in just two years.

The 'Bloon' will climb to a height of 22miles thanks to a huge balloon measuring 420ft in diameter.
The five-hour experience would cost an astronomical £90,000 per person but would offer 'space tourists' the chance to glimpse the curvature of the Earth.

Conditions on the 'near-spaceship' should be fairly comfortable as the pressurised pod, which is 13ft in diameter, would offer plenty of space for the two pilots and up to four guests. The room temperature would allow visitors to be in 'shirt sleeves.'

On 'their trip of a lifetime' visitors would experience a three-hour cruise at an altitude where they could watch the Sun dawning over our planet.

Then the sail would be vented and descend until the sail separated from the pod. A parachute would then deploy to fly the pod back to Earth.

The pod, due to fly its first mission in 2013, is the brainchild of Spanish company Zero 2 Infinity.
They claim is can be flown 25miles in any direction to safely guide it to a predetermined landing site.
Entrepreneur and CEO Jose Mariano Lopez-Urdiales said he was inspired to do the project while having a conversation with his astronomer father.

Going up: The pod holding two pilots and up to four guests will ascend thanks to a helium balloon 420ft in diameter

What Happens To Birds When Hurricanes Hit?

Hurricane Erin, Gulf Coast of Florida, 1995
Hurricane Irene is off the Bahamas and threatening large stretches of the East Coast of the US as we post this entry.
While Irene’s wind, rain and storm surge will certainly affect many people, some folks are also wondering about the effects it will have on birds in the places the hurricane passes through.
Numbers are hard to come by, but it’s clear that many birds are killed outright by hurricanes. This is especially true of seabirds, which have nowhere in which to seek shelter from these storms. Beaches may be littered with seabird carcasses following major storm events. Most Atlantic hurricanes occur in late summer and early fallâ€"and fall storms coincide with bird migration and may disrupt migration patterns severely.
Many birds get caught up in storm systems and are blown far off course, often landing in inhospitable places or simply arriving too battered and weakened to survive. Others, while not killed or displaced by storms, may starve to death because they are unable to forage while the weather is poor. The number of birds that die as a result of a major hurricanes may run into the hundreds of thousands.
Healthy bird populations are able to withstand such losses and have done so for eons. However, hurricanes can have severe impacts on endangered species, many of which occur on tropical islands, often among the places hardest hit by hurricanes. For example, Hurricane Hugo in 1989 killed half of the wild Puerto Rican Parrots existing at that time. The Cozumel Thrasher, found only on Mexico’s Isla Cozumel, was pushed to the edge of extinction by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. Hurricane Iniki may have wiped out the last survivors of as many as three bird species when it hit Hawaii in 1992.
Apart from the direct, physical effects hurricanes may have on birds, they also can have detrimental effects on bird habitats. Cavity-nesting species can be especially hard hit because the trees in which they nest often are blown down or snapped off at the cavity. Hurricane Hugo, which hit the Carolinas in 1989, destroyed most of the area’s nest trees of the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker; one forest lost 87 percent of its nest trees and 67 percent of its woodpeckers. Only through the installation of artificial nest boxes have these populations been restored to pre-storm levels.
Although birds blown out of their normal haunts by storms often don’t survive, bird-watchers by the hundreds may flock to see them. Usually, such sightings involve seabirds blown inland and appearing on lakes and reservoirs. First state records of many species have been obtained in this way. Some birders even head into hurricanes to see lost birds.* Others raptly study weather maps to try to predict where hurricane-swept birds will wind up. A few years back, during Isabel, birders were staked out in an organized fashion around New York’s Cayuga Lake to see what showed up. Land birds blown out to sea typically perish unnoticed.
It’s important to remember that the long-term effects of hurricanes on birds aren’t necessarily negative. Every disturbance event is bad for some species but good for others. For instance, hurricanes create gaps in forests, creating habitat for species that require a brushy understory. Birds blown off course occasionally establish entirely new populations; such events may be responsible for much, if not most, colonization of remote islands by birds. Furthermore, hurricanes have been around for a long time and are part of the system in which birds evolved. It is only when they have impacts on species already pushed to the brink by humans, or if hurricane activity is increased by global climate change, that there is cause for concern.

*Epitaph for a hurricane-chasing birder (not original):
Here he lies
A little wet
But he got
His lifelist met.

Wed Aug 24, 2011 8:10 pm (PDT)

Greetings from Emerald Rose! We'd like to announce our NEW CD:

"Verdant" is our first all-new studio album since 2007, and has 13 tracks, nearly all original compositions or "ER" arrangements of Celtic classics. It's a diverse collection, with every style from classic rock to Celtic dance to lullaby! You'll find some of our new "steampunk" sensibilities on there with "Clockwork Love" and "Her Majesty's Airship Corps." We have some breezy Jack Johnson-esque pop, some great instrumentals, a couple of dreamy original ballads, and the universal-consciousness groove of "Omega." We think you'll like this one a lot! Yes, it'll be available on CDBaby.com, but be patient...we don't even have our own copies yet!

We're only a couple weeks away from Dragon*Con Atlanta, which will be the first place to get this CD (signed, of course!) If you're going, look us up (probably in the Marriott lower level) and see one of our several shows. We have new T-shirts and stickers, too!! If you can't be there, we're also playing at the Irish Bred pub (Gainesville, GA) on Sept. 17 and Matilda's in Alpharetta on Oct. 1 -- see our gigs page for details/updates.
It's been an exciting and busy couple of months for our band, and we're delighted we have some new tunes for you! Come out and see us soon!

Magick and Science: The Veil is Thinning!  Part 2

Magick and Science: The Veil is Thinning! Part 2

Levitation and Gravity

You've all heard the story about Newton's apple...Isaac Newton is wandering about one afternoon and decides to relax under an apple tree. He's sitting there, maybe dozing, when suddenly an apple drops down and thunks him on the head. A the tale goes, this gets Newton to thinking about why everything falls down toward the Earth, instead of falling up, or even sideways. So begins his exploration into the laws of gravity.

What is gravity? Simply said, it's the tendency of two objects with mass to attract one another--in Newton's case, the attraction was between an apple and his head. Mass refers to the actual atomic volume of a piece of matter (i.e., the number of electrons, protons, molecules, and so forth, that comprise an object). Imagine that you had an empty room and put ten people into it. Now imagine the same room filled with fifty people. If the room is analogous to a piece of matter and the people to individual atoms, the room with fifty people has a higher density and a greater mass.

As for weight, it refers to the effect of gravity on a mass-containing object. If a person weighs 120 pounds on Earth, under 1g (the force created by Earth's gravitational field), they'll weigh 20 pounds on the Moon, where gravity is only 1/6 g. But their mass will be exactly the same on Earth and the Moon, because their atomic volume--and relative density--haven't changed.

Newton wasn't the first scientist to think about gravity; ancient philosophers pondered the problem as well. Humans originally believed that the heavens revolved around the Earth, a theory known as "geocentric," or Earth-centered. In the early 1600s, Copernicus advanced his theories of heliocentricism and his proof that the Sun was at the center of the solar system. Labeled an apostate, Copernicus served prison time for these findings, which were seen as dangerously heretical. Interestingly, the word "heretic" comes to us from the Greek hairetikos, literally "able to choose." Copernicus chose to set aside faith-based geocentricism and introduced a science-based view of the universe, choosing to subvert the church's control in favor of truth and, thereby, laying the groundwork for centuries that followed.

Galileo Galilei made another step toward understanding gravity in the late 1600s, when he dropped balls of different weights from the top of the Tower of Pisa and made deductions about the relationship between mass and acceleration. The results convinced him that gravity affected all objects equally, a major departure from earlier theories in which gravity was believed to be influenced by an object's mass and weight.

Copernicus and Galileo were among those setting the stage for Newton's greatest work: his law of universal gravitation. This law found that all mass-containing objects were affected by gravity in a predictable and constant fashion. Along with this, Newton developed three laws of motion, which helped explain gravity and its effects.

Newton's first law of motion is the law of inertia, which says that objects at rest tend to stay at rest, while those in motion tend to keep moving. Imagine you're riding in a car that brakes suddenly. The car slows to a rapid stop, but your body keeps moving, surging against the seat belt. You're in motion and Newton's law is trying to keep you moving; the only reason you stop is because the seat belt holds you to the stopping car. How does this law work for magick users? Imagine the feeling as you begin to raise a cone of power during ritual. It takes some work to get the power going, but once it begins, its hard to hold back, and once it's raised, it's equally hard to disperse.

Newton's second law describes the relationship between mass and motion, via position, direction, velocity, speed, and acceleration. Position refers to an object's fixed location in space, while direction implies movement from one position toward another. Velocity is the rate of change of position, while speed is a measurement defining how quickly something moves from one position to another. Finally, acceleration is the rate of change of velocity.

Calculating velocity requires both speed and direction, while acceleration can be affected by either speed or direction. Acceleration can also be "negative." We tend to think that accelerating means going faster. But acceleration is the rate of change of velocity, in either speed or direction. A car that slows down or turns is accelerating just as a car that speeds up.

To understand Newton's second law, we need one more term: momentum. Momentum refers to the quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass and velocity. Okay: imagine you wad up a single sheet of paper and throw it. You can accelerate the paper wad at a decent speed, but it has a very low mass, therefore, its momentum is low. It won't go far and will quickly decelerate and fall to the ground. Now imagine you pick up a book and throw it, using the same approximate force used to throw the paper wad. The acceleration is more difficult and is less than the paper wad, because the book has a higher mass. But because of that mass, the book's momentum is greater than that of the paper wad; thus, the book may go further than the wad, and when it hits the ground, it skids before stopping.

Last but not least is Newton's third law, which proves that every action generates an equal and opposite reaction. Shoot a gun and you feel the recoil. Magick users work with the action-reaction law any time we send energy out into the universe, because we know that the energy or spell must be sent with good intention, for whatever we send out bounces back into our laps--and the greater the spell's momentum, the more likely we'll feel its impact.

We also understand the limits of gravity. Stories of Witches zooming about on broomsticks took flight during the medieval Witch hysteria but met a nicer turn in recent years, when Harry Potter and friends climbed onto their Nimbus 2000s and took to the skies. Who among us wouldn't love to ride a broom or step into a wormhole or zip across the universe, tesseract-style? We content ourselves with dream work, guided meditation, and astral journeying, but how wonderful it would be to swoop through the clouds or explore the stars.

Living a Magical Life

Living a Magical Life
By Patti Wigington, About.com Guide

People find themselves drawn to Paganism and Wicca for a variety of reasons. Some may be trying to escape some other religion. Others may be looking for a sense of personal empowerment. Still others may realize that the beliefs they've held all along are in tune with those of a Pagan path. Regardless, once you've found your new path, there comes a time when you may ask yourself "How can I make this spiritual system part of my daily life?"

Are you someone who thinks about the principles of your tradition all the time, or only when it's convenient? If you honor a particular deity in your path, do you do so just on the eight Sabbats, but not bother the rest of the time? Are you constantly reading and learning, or do you figure everything you need to know is contained in the three books you already own? In other words, are you a "weekend Wiccan"?

Living a magical life is something that one does twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Depending on the needs of your tradition, it may involve something as complex as daily ritual, or as simple as taking a moment to thank your gods each morning when you get out of bed. It means being in tune with the spiritual world around you, and staying in balance physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Does this mean you need to run around shouting "The Goddess loves you!" all day long? Not at all... in fact, the rest of us would appreciate it if you didn’t do that. What it does mean is there's a difference between seeing Paganism and Wicca as something you "do" versus something you believe.

How can you bring more magic into your daily life? Try one, or more, of the following -- and if something doesn't apply to your particular flavor of Paganism, don't sweat it. Use what you need, and set the rest aside.

Pay attention to the phases of the moon. Know what's happening in the skies, and notice how (or if) it affects the way you feel.

Recognize that you don't know everything there is to know. Continue learning and growing, and be willing to accept that sometimes new knowledge will come from unexpected sources. Don't assume that you're always right, just because you've always done or thought something.

Show respect for nature -- do things on a daily basis that are good for the planet. Recycle, compost, cut back on excess energy consumption.

Get in touch with the earth. Plant a garden, study the changes of the seasons. Realize how good it feels to grow your own herbs and vegetables.

Be empowered. Know that you have control over many of the things that happen to you. If someone or something makes you miserable, make the changes that are necessary to bring yourself happiness.

Understand that just as you have control over your life, you are also responsible for your actions. Take ownership of everything you do -- even if that includes admitting you're wrong sometimes.

Find a way to honor the Divine in your daily life, rather than just at monthly Esbats. Even if you just start your day with a morning "thank you" to your gods or to the universe itself, it's not a bad thing to acknowledge the gifts that we have in our lives.

Behave in a way that is honorable -- if you make a promise, keep it. If someone needs help and you can provide it, offer it.

When you do something, think about how you can use it in a magical application. For example, when you're baking cookies, consider what sort of magical working you can incorporate into the recipe.

Consider the impact that your words and actions have on not only the environment, but also on other people and on yourself.

Elder's Meditaton of the Day

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"We have to have one mind for the Four Directions. Until we reach that one mind, we cannot be filled with understanding.... The Creator will not answer until you have just one mind, just like if you have one person."

-- Grandfather William Commanda, ALGONQUIN

The Elders have taught us to balance our lives emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually. If I am out of control emotionally, I get angry, doubtful or erratic, I am out of balance. If I trigger bad mental pictures of my brothers and sisters, I am out of balance. If I get too hungry, angry, lonely, or tired, I am out of balance physically. If I don't pray and talk to the Creator daily, I am out of balance spiritually. To be centered, I must be in balance. The Creator talks to me in the quiet and still place. So if I get angry, what I should do first is to pause and get still so I can hear the guidance of the Grandfathers.

Oh Great Spirit whose voice I hear in the winds, protect and keep me safe today - hear my prayers.

Hermes the Traveler Spell

Hermes the Traveler Spell

To protect someone traveling to you, burn a red candle to promote strength, good health, and protection. Anoint the candle with sandalwood oil for focus and protection and clove oil for extra protection each day they are on the road. Say: “As my loved one travels night and day, Hermes protect him (or her) on the way!”

The God Speaks

The God Speaks

I am the radiant King of the Heavens, flooding the Earth with warmth and encouraging the hidden seed of creation to burst forth into manifestation.
I lift my shining spear to light the lives of all beings and daily pour forth my golden rays upon the Earth, putting to flight the powers of darkness.

I am the master of the beasts wild and free.
I run with the stag and soar as a sacred falcon against the shimmering sky. The ancient woods and wild places emanate my powers, the birds of the air sing of my sanctity.

I am also the last harvest, offering up grain and fruits beneath the sickle of time so that all may be nourished.
For without planting there can be no harvest; without winter, no spring.

Worship me as the thousand-named Sun of creation, the spirit of the horned stag in the wild, the endless harvest.
See in the yearly cycle of festivals my birth, death and rebirth and know that such is the destiny of all creation.

I am the spark of life, the radiant Sun, the giver of peace and rest, and I send my rays of blessings to warm the hearts and strengthen the minds of all.

Summer's End

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Summer's End

Autumn Equinox is the point of the year opposite the Vernal or Spring Equinox, when the path of the Sun in the sky crosses the plane of the celiptic. Just as on Ostara, the day an d night are of equal length, and light and dark are in balance. this is the day of the year when the Lord of Light is defeated by his twin and altr ego, the Dark Lord. The Autumn Equinox is considered the only day of the whle year when light is vulnerable and it is possible to defeat him. Because of leap year, the exact date of the Autumnal Equinox fluctuates each dalendar year between September 20 and September 23, but most traditions celebrate it on Swptember 21.

Also known as Harvest Home, Kirn Feast, Mell Day, Ingathering, and Harvest's Height, this is the second of the three Celtic harvest festivals, between Lughnasadh and Samhain. In medieval Europe, the Autumn Equinox marked the middle of the harvest season, when farming communities began the intense preparations against the looming barren months of winter. This season was known as the Harvesting or Reaping Tide, a time of inward turning as well as celebration and gratitude for a bountiful harvest.

In England, the traditional name for this feast of thanksgiving is Harvest HOme, a feast given by farmers for their workers. But the Plymouth Pilgrims had a late harvest, so America's Thanksgiving is celebrated much later. In Ireland, Michaelmas (around September 29) was the time of the goose harvest and apple picking for making cider. In Latvia, one of the last European holdouts of the Old Paganism, this harvest festival is called Vela Laiks, the "Time of the Dead."

The last stand of grain in the field marked the end of the harvest, and the cutting of it was attended with some ceremony;;; the way the last sheaf was cut was held by many to affect the destiny of its cutter. Small ornamental twists or knots of plaited straw, called "harvest knots," were made and worn as a sign that the harvest was complete. The most universal tradition throughout Europe was the corn dolly made from the final sheaf. Called in Ireland the Cailleach or "hag," tahis was prominently displayed in the house, replacing theone from the previous year.

Sometimes the vegetation spirit was represented by a large, man-like wickerwork figure. It was believed that the spirit of the grain resided in this effigy, and it was dressed in good clothes, addressed by name, and carried from the field, where it was usually burned as a mock sacrifice, amidst much rejoicing, similar to the modern "Burning Man" festiva. held each year at this time in the Nevada desert.

Mabon hs the Welsh god of the Harvest, Mabon at Modron, meaning "divine son of the divine motner." As told in the Maginogion, Mabon was stolen from his mother three nights after his birth, and dwelt in Annwfn (the Welsh underworld) until he was rescued by Culhwch. Because of his time in the underworld, Mabon stayed a young man forever, and he qas equated with the Roman Apollo. He is the Green Man whose blood is an intoxicating beverage. Other examples of this archetype are Dionysos (wine), Osiris s(beer), and John Barleycorn (whiskey). Indeed, the traditional song, "John Barleycorn," epitomizes the spirit of the season.

The name of Mabon was given to the Autumn Equinox Sabbat by Aidan Kelly around 1970, and it has become widely adopted throughout the Pagan community. However, this name does not appear to have been historically attributed to any festival.

This festival commemorates the ritual sacrifice of the God and his descent into the underworld, and the brewers' art that produces the sacrament of this season. In the California Wine Country, where I live, this is the festival of the grape harvest, often dedicated to Bacchus. WHiskey and brandy, as the spirit of the barley, is also readily consumed during this festival! The bay tree is sacred to Mabon, as its magical action is preservation, a time-honored harvest-tide occupation.

It is important to note that the Full Moon closest to the Autumn Equinox is the traditional time of the ancient Greek Ekeusinian Mysteries, in whch Persephone, the Flower Maid, is abducted by Hades, lord of the underworld, to reign as his queen for the next six months, until she returns to the surface at the Vernal Equinox. Versions of these mysteries have been re-created and conducted annually for decades by a number of modern Pagan traditions--including Church of All Worlds.

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.

Mm Lionaire,

Perhaps you/she could look into Bach Flower therapies or homeopathy? They
address emotional (or other) issues at an energetic level. Once some of the
energetic 'misalignment' leading to the moods has been adjusted, she will
find it easier to further improve them through conscious effort. Best of
luck to her! It's a difficult age in any case, even without the specific
issues involved.

Miki
