"True Blood" Takes on the Wiccans

The thing is the Witch is using the Wiccan Coven
to do her bidding they are doing what they are told to do and not able
to break away from it, The HPS allowed the spirit of the Witch to enter
her body to do her bidding/revenge on those that wronged her in the
past, vampires reaped her, she was tied up and hung, she is using the
Wiccan woman to come back. People I think are confused

This week, we're looking at how shows like "True Blood" portray modern Paganism (and how many folks just watch the show for the eye candy), as well as whether religious people are happier in hard economic times, and whether the Air Force has been using Biblical principles in ROTC recruiting and training. We're also talking about an inmate's request for a Satanic book (denied!) and the Goddess of the North unfolding over a British strip mine site. Also, be sure to check on the Weekly Roundup, to see if you've missed anything in the past few days. Have a magical week, and don't forget you can Follow Pagan/Wiccan on Twitter or Join Me On Facebook.

"True Blood" Takes on the Wiccans

Let me preface this by saying I don't have HBO, the channel that "True Blood" is on. I also should say that while I read the first four books in Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series, I pretty much lost interest after that point. Also, I'm just not into vampires that much. So, these are my reasons for not watching the show. That having been said, I've gotten a bunch of emails lately about "True Blood," because evidently they've added a Wiccan coven, so ... Handfastings: Jumping the Broom

A reader asks, "I went to a Pagan handfasting ceremony last weekend, and the couple included a broom jumping in their ritual. Is there any sort of historical custom about jumping the broom in Pagan weddings?" Although "jumping the broom" is often associated with the ... Read Full Article

Are Religious People Happier When Times are Tough?

Ed Diener, a psychology professor at the University of Illinois, has analyzed data from the 2005-2009 Gallup World Poll, a survey of people in more than 150 countries, and come to the conclusion that religious people are happier when times are hard. The study, which appears in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, indicates that "religious affiliation appears to boost happiness and ... Read Full Article

The Air Force, the Bible, and ROTC

I have no idea if my high school had an ROTC group or not, but by the time I was in college I met several people - many of them active duty military personnel -- who had gone through the ROTC program at their various schools. All of them said it was a great program, and had inspired them to go into the armed forces as a career. However, a new report by CNN indicates that the Air Force's ROTC training is pretty heavy-handed on the Christian messaging. An Air Force ROTC instructor came forward with ... Read Full Article

DailyOM - Staying on Track
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

In Line with Spirit
Staying on Track
In a world where we have routines to get everything done, we rarely have a routine for our spiritual self.

In a world where we have routines for nearly everythingâ€"our route to work, our physical fitness regimen, and our weekday scheduleâ€"it’s amazing how many people forget to create a routine for meeting their spiritual needs. We run around in an attempt to be at our many appointments on time and meet our many obligations. In our efforts to be as productive as possible, however, our spiritual needs tend to take a backseat. After all, taking care of our spiritual needs doesn’t directly pay the bills or tone our abdominal muscles. We may even wonder who has time to meditate or write in their journal when there are more pressing matters to see to. The truth is that nurturing ourselves spiritually is what gives us the energy and grounding that we need to make sure that our lives stay on track.

How you choose to nurture yourself spiritually is a personal choice. For some people, meditating once a day may be what they need to stay centered. While spending 10-20 minutes with your eyes closed and your brain devoid of thought may seem like a lot of time doing nothing, this state of nothingness actually allows you to stay calm and focused so you can be as productive as possible. Writing in your journal everyday lets you stay in touch with yourself so that you are always tuned in to your feelings. Repeating affirmations for success, happiness, and well-being on a regular basis can help you live with optimism and enthusiasm and create what you want in life.

Having a routine for nurturing your spirit that you do each day lets you feed energy to your soul and can serve you well if your life suddenly takes an unexpected turn into a difficult period. This kind of routine grounds your spirit in your body so that you stay anchored in yourself as you move through each day. Nurturing yourself spiritually allows you to not only stay on track in your life, but it allows for your life to stay on track with what your spirit wants.

What's Happening Today:

WANING MOON

Time: From full moon to dark moon (approx.14 days)
Goddess Aspect: Crone

Magickal Attributes: BANISHING Releasing the old, removing unwanted negative energies, wisdom, psychic ability, scrying, reversing circumstances.   Workings on this day are for banishing magick, for ridding oneself of addictions, illness or negativity, physical and  psychic cleansing.

Blessing of the Grapes - In Armenia, the blessing of the Grapes takes place on the Sunday closest to the Assumption (they coincide this year). No grapes are eaten until today when they are taken to church to be blessed, then distributed to the churchgoers when they leave. Women named Mary have parties in vineyards or their homes (because this is considered their name day â€" as in many cultures, the saint's day associated with your name is celebrated like a birthday). Spicer, Dorothy Gladys, The Book of Festivals, The Women's Press 1937

Hera Thelkinia - On the 20th day of the lunar month of Metageitnion, the Greeks celebrated this festival in honor of Hera as Thelkinia, which some translate as the Charmer and others as the Enchanter.

Cat Nights -Someone thought that cats deserved their own month-long holiday after the Dog Days and decided that this was the starting date for it. Makes sense to me.

Portunalia - An obscure Roman festival associated with the harbor god Portunus, whose symbol was the key. He may have been a god of gates, or the keys that secure grain storehouses. Until AD 17, this was also the dedication day of Janus's temple. Considering the value of stored grain, which is both food in winter and seed for spring, it makes sense that blessing the keys or transporting the grain to the storehouse at harvest time would become a sacred ritual.

China: FEAST OF THE HUNGRY GHOSTS. Wide variety of offerings for those who died orphans, paupers or beggars & those who died far from home. Those lonesome & desolate souls may return to inhabit leaves & grasses, & spread plagues. If offerings are made, they may stay away.

Rome: Portunalia, a festival honoring Portunis, an aspect of the god Janus. Also called the Tiberinalia, or the festival of the
Tiber river, as he is the God of the Tiber. Portunis is also the God of keys, and the opening of locked gates. On this day old
keys were burned in the hearth as a sacrificial offering. Also on this day, Romans celebrated the Festival of Diana, Goddess of
the Moon, the protector of all young girls and chastity, and Goddess of the Hunt. The coincidence of festivals honoring the
God of Keys and the Goddess who protected virginity is apt.

Asatru: Odin's Ordeal, from August 17-25. Also called Othin, Wotan, and Wodin, he was the Nordic and Germanic all-father.
From the Viking age, Odin survived the Christianization of Europe and is still remembered, despite a period when even
saying his name was banned by the Church.  He ruled over the Valkyries and rewarded slain heroes with glorious afterlife in
the Hall of Valhalla, where warrior spirits wait in readiness to defend Asgard against the Jotuns and Frost Giants at the
foretold battle of Ragnarokk. Odin's symbol is the valknut knot, his animal is the raven, his weapon is a rune-carved spear.
Odin's story has obvious parallels to the story of Christ: he once pierced himself with his own spear, and hung for 9 days on
the world tree, Yggdrasill, to gain knowledge throughcommunication with the dead.

1950: Native American mystic and medicine man, Nicholas 'Black Elk,' died in Manderson, SD. Profiled in the book, "Black Elk
Speaks" by John G. Neihrdt, known for his powers of prophecy and healing, a warrior of the Oglala Sioux tribe. Black Elk was an
adherent of the Ghost Dance, and witnessed the tragic massacre of followers of this Native American spiritual "last stand" at
Wounded Knee, SD, in 1890.

Lleu Llaw Gyffes Invocation

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Aug 16, 2011 8:31 pm (PDT)

Lleu Llaw Gyffes Invocation
Incense of the day: Eucalyptus

The Welsh counterpart to the Irish god Lugh was Lleu Llaw Gyffes, the
“Bright One of the Skillful Hand.” This name was similar to Lugh’s
titlesâ€"Samildanach, “the Many Skilled,” and Lamfada, “of the Long Arm.”
Lleu is the son of the Moon Goddess Arianrhod who, dishonored, angrily denied her son a name, arms, and a
mortal bride, though his uncle Gwydion helped him obtain these. Lleu’s
wife Blodeuwedd was made of flowers and lacked both soul and divinity.
In the end, she betrayed Lleu and tried to cause his death. But he
underwent a shamanic illness and healing and was finally restored to
health and power again after the betrayal. Here is an invocation of true path and power for daily use:

Power of Sun be mine, Power of Moon.
Power of storm,
Power of earth,
Power of sea,
Power of land,
Power of fire,
And power of element.
Each day be joyous,
In honor and compassion.

Spell to Draw Spirits

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Aug 16, 2011 8:32 pm (PDT)

Spell to Draw Spirits

To draw
beneficial spirits toward you, place an Ouija board in the center of
your table for three nights, but don’t use it. Later, get together with
three spiritually inclined friends. Light a candle, hold hands, sit in a darkened room, and call on the spirits. Make up a name for your ghost.
Ask: “Jack? Is that you?” If the spirit is not named Jack, he or she
will then correct you. Watch your candle flame dip and dart. If the fire appears to go out and spikes up again, you have likely made spiritual
contact. Ask your spirits to reveal themselves. After contact, consider
the words, thoughts, and pictures that surface in your mind. Examine
such thoughts carefully. Telepathy is the usual way most spirits
communicate with us.

Today's Goddess:  Diana Festival of Diana (Rome)

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Aug 16, 2011 8:32 pm (PDT)

Today's Goddess:  Diana
Festival of Diana (Rome)

Themes:  Fertility; Children; Providence; Abundance; Harvest
Symbols: Moon; Water; Forest Items; Sun

About Diana:  This Roman  Goddess embodies the moon's fertility and watery aspects,
along with the sun's protective and nurturing power over the forests and its creatures.
On this day she was celebrated in Rome, and she will be remembered in our hearts
as the huntress who helps us capture the spiritual "food" we need.

To Do Today:  Starting on August 13, the Romans had a weeklong festival for Diana,
praying to her for the harvest's bounty, and to turn damaging storms away. The traditional
place to leave an offering of fruit or vines for her is in the forest, or at a crossroads.

As you do, if any stone or leaf catches your eye, pick it up and carry it as a charm
that will keep Diana's power with you that entire day.  Come night, release the gift to
flowing water or back to the earth with a prayer of thanks and a wish for one of Diana's
attributes that you wish to develop in your life.

It is also customary to light some fire source to honor her on August 15 or anytime during
the festivities.  Afterward, to generate this goddess's physical or figurative fertility within you,
follow Roman convention and wash your hair with specially prepared water (water to which
just a little milk is added so that it looks white, like the moon).  If you have children, doing
this for them incurs Diana's protection over their lives.

Song of Kimpaim Central Africa

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Aug 16, 2011 8:33 pm (PDT)

Old Mother Ndundu,
powered in red,
is the ground
which grows chefs.
Mother Ndundu is
the source of all.
Mother Ndundu is
the very paragon of peace
~Song of Kimpaim Central Africa

There is a deep connection between peace and power. Those who feel as they
have no power to create positive changes in their lives will often grow restless
and angry with their powerlessness. It is difficult to be at peace with the world
when you are not at peace with yourself. Those who believe themselves to have
the power to satisfy their dreams find it easier to be generous and kind than those
who do not. But having power alas, does not ensure that one will not be violent
and ambitious. Each day's news tells us that. The curious fact is that no nation
ever wages an offensive war;aggressors always believe themselves to be the
disadvantages, vulnerable, about to be attacked. People, too, strike out at each
other from pain and fear. Defensive attitudes cause offensive actions. Only a sense
of secure power makes one truly peaceful.
