Helichrysum is good for this, too, although (over here, at least) it is very expensive.

For those late night meetings, studying or paper work
try diffusing this blend of Peppermint, Lemongrass,
Pine, and Orange. It'll give you just the "kick" you need.
Much better than caffeine.

ASPCA, Pet Parents Prepare for Hurriane Irene

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

ASPCA, Pet Parents Prepare for Hurricane Irene

As Hurricane Irene threatens a large swath of land along the Eastern Seaboard, the ASPCA is deploying emergency responders to help rescue and shelter animals displaced by the storm. Members of our Field Investigations and Response Team are working closely with the New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the OEM's Animal Planning Task Force to assist with the city's disaster relief efforts.
The ASPCA encourages pet parents to develop an emergency plan in advance of the storm, and include potential evacuation in that plan. "Disasters threaten the safety of people and animals alike, and it's often too late to create a plan for your pets when you're in the middle of a crisis," says Tim Rickey, Senior Director of the ASPCA Field Investigations and Response Team. For families who must leave their homes, evacuation centers and emergency shelters in New York City will be pet friendly, and people are encouraged to evacuate with their pets. Please call 311 to find an evacuation center.

The ASPCA offers the following tips:

Bring pets indoors at the first sign of the storm. Animals can become disoriented and wander away from home during a disaster.
Arrange a safe haven for yourself and your pets in the event of evacuation. Do not leave pets behind.
Store an emergency kit—with items such as pet food, bottled water, medical records, a blanket, a flashlight and leashes—as close to an exit as possible.
Make sure all pets wear collars and tags with up-to-date identification.
Affix a rescue alert sticker to your front door or window to let rescuers know that there are pets inside your home.
Choose a designated caregiver to take care of your pet in the event you are unable to do so.

For more information on how to keep yourself and your pet safe in the event of an emergency, please read our complete list of Disaster Readiness tips. Stay tuned to ASPCA.org for the latest on this developing story.

Magick and Science: The Veil is Thinning!  Part 3

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Fri Aug 26, 2011 11:49 am (PDT)

Magick and Science: The Veil is Thinning! Part 3

Light Speed and Time Travel

Newton's laws revolutionized science, and they still hold up today. In the twentieth century, Einstein followed with his general theory of relativity by relating gravitational effects to the curved dimension of "spacetime" rather than to rigid linear physics, flirting with the perceived barriers of light speed and vast distance.

Einstein would be happy to hear that traveling at warp speed may one day become reality. In August 2008, scientists at Baylor University in Texas advanced a new theory that could allow space vehicles to exceed light speed, while still cooperating with Newton's and Einstein's laws. Their theory suggests that manipulating the extra-spatial dimensions of string theory around a spaceship could create a "bubble" that could effectively allow the ship to travel "outside" of gravity moving faster than the speed of light. (String theory is a type of theoretical physics proposing that the universe is created of one-dimensional strings. Strings behave and intersect in unique ways that support quantum physics and novel approaches to gravitation.) Guided by the strings, space-time would effectively expand behind the spaceship and shrink in front of it, pushing the bubble along. Since known space would continue to move around the ship, the theory wouldn't violate Einstein's laws of space-time curvature but would move between them.

The Baylor theory would require enormous amounts of energy for initiation and acceleration, but once in motion, minimal energy would be needed to sustain the momentum. If spaceships could move faster than light-speed, enormous distances could be crossed in short time periods, making intergalactic travel possible. Even more tantalizing is the idea that human dimensional or galactic travel--as in the ability to propel one's self across the universe--might follow on the heels of "bubble travel."

Invisibility

Next to being able to fly through the sky, most of us would love to possess a good invisibility charm. To be invisible is to be unseeable, and to move and "do" at will. Today's magick users learn to work with energy shields, not only to repel vagrant energy but also to cloak themselves against wandering eyes. The person who casts an invisibility shield charm appears to soften and fade into the background, to become less noticeable. The magick is imperfect, but surprisingly effective--even in its simplest form.

Today's scientists have moved closer to creating a real invisibility cloak. In August 2008, scientists at the University of California at Berkeley, announced they had used "metamaterials" to successfully cloak (and hide!) a three-dimensional object. Metamaterials--a mixture of Teflon, ceramic, and silicon composites--work by bending light and redirecting it around and away from a solid object. We see solid objects because the objects "scatter" the light that strikes them, reflecting the scattered light back to the viewer's eye. If the light is redirected, it can't scatter or create shadows, and the object becomes unseeable. The metamaterials can also scatter radar signals, suggesting the new technology has obvious military implications. But what fun we think we might one day don invisibility cloaks, just like Harry's!

Protection of Ancestors Spell

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Protection of Ancestors Spell

Place pictures of your ancestors and those who have passed and are important to you in a circle on an altar table.
Light a candle in the northern corner of the table. Light some incense, clear your mind, and say:

Here I see the line of love,
Stretching down from above.
Kinsmen whose love never leaves,
Protect me in my time of need.

Place a photo of yourself in the middle of the table. See the circle of love around you and know you are blessed. Blow out the candle and imagine the smoke from this and the incense carrying your wishes to your kin. Further honor your ancestors by tending their graves or keeping their memories alive by writing their stories for the generations to come.

Elder's Meditation of the Day

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Fri Aug 26, 2011 11:52 am (PDT)

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"Everyone has to find the right path. You can't see it so it's hard to find. No one can show you. Each person has to find the path by himself."

-- Charlie Knight, UTE

There are certain times in our lives when a voice whispers to us. The voice doesn't always talk. Usually we hear it best when we are sick and tired of being sick and tired. Inside every person is the knowledge that a Supreme Being exists. Sometimes a restlessness occurs and it makes me feel I need to be doing something or I need to be going somewhere or maybe I start wondering who am I? Often when this happens, I feel lost. Inside of everyone is the natural, built-in desire to be walking the Red Road, or to be seeking a relationship with the Creator. No one can force us to make this journey. We must make this journey because we want to. This journey is not on the outside. The path is inside of ourselves. It is inside that we must begin our search.

Oh Great Spirit, help me this day to look within myself. If trouble arises, let me realize that it's not what is going on but how I am looking at what is going on. Give me Your power this day to conduct myself according to Your way of life.

A portrait of Amy Winehouse made of pills. Using 5,000 multicoloured tablets, artist Jason Mecier created the 17 x 21 inch picture to honour the singer's short life. He creates his portraits of celebrities using junk, pills and sweets. Jason sometimes uses items donated by the stars themselves to complete his pieces. Jason explains: "Celebrities really do send me items. Most people send me anywhere from a shoebox to a trash bag full of things to incorporate into their portraits. I have a bag of Pam Anderson's laundry, and a letter Paris Hilton wrote me from prison."

Jason says his Lady Gaga portrait "has some Hello Kitty merchandise that was used in her famous photo shoot." He says his portraits take at least 50 hours, but many take much, much longer - Lady Gaga took him almost two months and hundreds of hours.

The San Francisco artist builds collages from unusual materials that he feels suit the personality or life of the subject. His portrait of Michael Jackson is made from thousands of pills

A portrait of Taylor Swift made of pink and white sweets

A Barack Obama portrait made of red, white and blue junk

The stars are sometimes so flattered by the trash treatment that they buy their own portraits - which start at $1,500. Rosie O'Donnell bought this picture of her made out of food

Pink was so impressed with her portrait that she bought it and used it in her music video for Please Don't Leave Me

Scissor Sisters bought their portrait, which features hundreds of pairs of scissors

Nicolas Cage junk portrait

A Courtney Love portrait made of pills

A portrait of Frida Kahlo made of junk, including the skulls used on the Mexican Day of the Dead

Retro Radar

"RetroRadar.com is an information clearinghouse for anyone enamored of mid-20th century pop culture, including hot rodders, lindy hoppers, classic film lovers, Art Deco aficionados, WWII re-enactors, vintage clothing collectors, and other retrophiles. . . . We venerate movies that pull at the heartstrings, music that makes you want to dance, and clothing that flatters rather than flaunts." If you're into the 'retro scene,' the world of vintage Americana, this site is definitely the place to visit. Take a trip back in to the time 'when virtues were golden and people were the priority. A time when families gathered around the dinner table to talk about their day, when a car was a work of quality craftsmanship, and a trip to the cinema was like an escape to a fantasyland of infinite possibility.' Planetary Forecast

By The Astrologer, Kelli Fox

Mercury Retrograde ends today and relief is in sight. After three weeks of backing up and rethinking your plans, and possibly being frustrated by technical glitches and miscommunications, it's time again to move forward. But not so fast -- when Mercury changes directions, the Retrograde influence can be especially intense. Be willing to move slowly today, and be extra-clear with your words. Delays are possible, so allow yourself plenty of time to get to appointments. Put off making major decisions, business deals or purchases. After today, once the Messenger planet gets back up to speed, you'll be able to make forward progress with a renewed sense of purpose. Mercury is now in Leo, the sign that rules the heart. Ideally, these past few weeks have helped you clarify what brings you happiness, and you feel inspired to pursue your joy.

Daily Feng Shui Tip for Friday, August 26

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Fri Aug 26, 2011 12:49 pm (PDT)

Daily Feng Shui Tip by Ellen Whitehurst for Friday, August 26

No, you're not barking up the wrong tree, it really is 'National Dog Day!' So can I get a 'Woot Woot!' -- um, I mean, a 'Woof Woof!' As a practicing aromatherapist I once learned something very interesting about dogs and essential oils. Dogs have very good instincts for these pure oils and so an experiment was done where a digestive oil was put on one hand while a pesticide oil was put on the other. A dog that had an upset stomach who was then allowed into the room immediately came forward to lick the hand with the digestive oil. This could be because dogs have a much more acute sense of smell than humans, so we generally try to use a minimum quantity of essential oils when addressing doggie illnesses. But for today's post we're going to use these oils to scratch what's itching them. If you regularly shampoo your best friend (and you should) one of the easiest, safest and all-natural ways to deal with fleas is to add one drop (for small to mid-size dogs, two drops for larger breeds) of either lemongrass or citronella oil to their shampoo. Most dogs cotton to the scent and it gives them a nice, fresh smell as well. If your dog has been cut or grazed from too much scratching, bathe the area of the wound in a solution of six drops pure lavender essential oil to a half gallon of water. The essential oil will help to clean the wound and serving as an all-natural antibiotic and disinfectant. Rest easy that if the dog licks the wound afterward he won't be ingesting anything harmful, which isn't always the case with OTC products. A healthy, happy and itch-free dog -- now would be the time for that 'WOOT WOOT!

Hurricane Erin, Gulf Coast of Florida, 1995
Hurricane Irene is off the Bahamas and threatening large stretches of the East Coast of the US as we post this entry.
While Irene's wind, rain and storm surge will certainly affect many people, some folks are also wondering about the effects it will have on birds in the places the hurricane passes through.
Numbers are hard to come by, but it's clear that many birds are killed outright by hurricanes. This is especially true of seabirds, which have nowhere in which to seek shelter from these storms. Beaches may be littered with seabird carcasses following major storm events. Most Atlantic hurricanes occur in late summer and early fall—and fall storms coincide with bird migration and may disrupt migration patterns severely.
Many birds get caught up in storm systems and are blown far off course, often landing in inhospitable places or simply arriving too battered and weakened to survive. Others, while not killed or displaced by storms, may starve to death because they are unable to forage while the weather is poor. The number of birds that die as a result of a major hurricanes may run into the hundreds of thousands.
Healthy bird populations are able to withstand such losses and have done so for eons. However, hurricanes can have severe impacts on endangered species, many of which occur on tropical islands, often among the places hardest hit by hurricanes. For example, Hurricane Hugo in 1989 killed half of the wild Puerto Rican Parrots existing at that time. The Cozumel Thrasher, found only on Mexico's Isla Cozumel, was pushed to the edge of extinction by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. Hurricane Iniki may have wiped out the last survivors of as many as three bird species when it hit Hawaii in 1992.
Apart from the direct, physical effects hurricanes may have on birds, they also can have detrimental effects on bird habitats. Cavity-nesting species can be especially hard hit because the trees in which they nest often are blown down or snapped off at the cavity. Hurricane Hugo, which hit the Carolinas in 1989, destroyed most of the area's nest trees of the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker; one forest lost 87 percent of its nest trees and 67 percent of its woodpeckers. Only through the installation of artificial nest boxes have these populations been restored to pre-storm levels.
Although birds blown out of their normal haunts by storms often don't survive, bird-watchers by the hundreds may flock to see them. Usually, such sightings involve seabirds blown inland and appearing on lakes and reservoirs. First state records of many species have been obtained in this way. Some birders even head into hurricanes to see lost birds.*  Others raptly study weather maps to try to predict where hurricane-swept birds will wind up.  A few years back, during Isabel, birders were staked out in an organized fashion around New York's Cayuga Lake to see what showed up. Land birds blown out to sea typically perish unnoticed.
It's important to remember that the long-term effects of hurricanes on birds aren't necessarily negative. Every disturbance event is bad for some species but good for others. For instance, hurricanes create gaps in forests, creating habitat for species that require a brushy understory. Birds blown off course occasionally establish entirely new populations; such events may be responsible for much, if not most, colonization of remote islands by birds. Furthermore, hurricanes have been around for a long time and are part of the system in which birds evolved. It is only when they have impacts on species already pushed to the brink by humans, or if hurricane activity is increased by global climate change, that there is cause for concern.

*Epitaph for a hurricane-chasing birder (not original):
Here he lies
A little wet
But he got
His lifelist met.

I just wanted to introduce myself to the group. I am a Solitary Ecclectic (well mostly solitary) Pagan Witch. I have been doing work with Hecate lately. I am looking forward to meeting some new people from different groups. I have been a member of some other groups for a couple of years and it seems that some of the info is repeating its-self. I love discussion especially.
Bright Blessings,

Merry meet and welcome to the group. I really like your magickal name.

"I ain't no saint, but I've tried never to do anything that would hurt my family or offend God...I figure all any kid needs is hope and the feeling he or she belongs. If I could do or say anything that would give some kid that feeling, I would believe I had contributed something to the world."
