Elder's Meditation of the Day

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Mon Jan 17, 2011 10:25 am (PST)

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"In our story of Creation, we talk about each one of us having our own path to travel, and our own gift to give and to share. You see, what we say is that the Creator gave us all special gifts; each one of us is special. And each one of us is a special gift to each other because we've got something to share."

-- John Peters (Slow Turtle), WAMPANOAG

We are all equally special. We need to focus on what is right for ourselves. As we focus on what is right for ourselves, we will start to see our special gifts. Then we can see how to share our special gifts with others. If we focus on what's wrong with ourselves, we will not be able to see our gifts. Then we will think we have nothing to give others and we become selfish and withdrawn. The more we focus on our good, the more we see the good in others. The more we see the good in others, the more we see the gifts they have to share. What you sees is what you gets!

My Creator, today, let me use the gifts You have given me. Let me use them wisely.

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"We don't have to say or think what we don't wish to. We have a choice in those things, and we have to realize that and practice using that choice."

-- Rolling Thunder, CHEROKEE

Having choices makes us fully accountable. No one can make us think anything we don't want to think. No one can determine our behavior and how we act. It's not what's going on but how we look at what's going on. If someone does something and we get upset, we can change how we look at it any time we want. We can tell ourselves in the morning that the day is going to be beautiful and that we have expectations that great things will happen. Doing this daily sets our mind to look for the joy and the excitement of each day.

Great Spirit, help me to choose my thoughts with Your wisdom.

This Week's Moonscopes

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Mon Jan 17, 2011 11:10 am (PST)

For the week of January 16 to January 22
(Missed last week's forecast? Here it is.)

Sunday, Monday am: the Moon is in Gemini
Verbal or written connections and information are important (Gemini keywords). Someone wants to hear what you have to say and you will benefit from someone else's feedback or insights as well. Venus is in Sagittarius, directly opposite the Moon in Gemini, making for some sweet and pleasant interactions. The planet Venus enjoys harmonious, balanced situations and this is also very soothing to emotions, one of the areas of life ruled by (associated with) the Moon.

Monday pm, Tuesday, Wednesday(Full Moon): the Moon is in Cancer
This particular Full Moon occurs in the Moon's own sign, its rulership, where it is most comfortable. By the way, the only sign in which the Moon has even stronger energy than Cancer is Taurus, its exaltation or highest point. Two keywords for Cancer are sensitivity and empathy. Someone close to you may benefit from a supportive dose of these qualities during the first part of this week.

Wednesday evening, Thursday, Friday(*v/c-pm): the Moon is in Leo
Leo likes to play; we've covered the fun aspect of this sign in a number of previous weekly Moonscopes. Leo also likes to be creative. The planet Mars is in Aquarius, directly opposite the Moon in Leo, and is poised to take action (a Mars keyword). So take advantage of this marvelous hookup by bringing out one or more of your creative ideas and having a blast!

Friday evening, Saturday: the Moon is in Virgo
Jupiter will be leaving Pisces, the sign directly opposite Virgo, on Sunday as the Moon transits (travels or moves) out of Virgo. This is a good weekend for winding up all kinds of details and clearing out spaces, both mental and environmental or physical.

Check your astrology chart to find which house (section of your chart) has the current Moon sign on the cusp (the beginning edge) & apply Forecast information to that area of your life as well.
For example, the Moon is in Leo and one of the suggestions is to entertain - however Leo is located in the 12th house of your chart, which is an inward energy place...then have a small, quiet gathering. By contrast, if Leo is located in the 1st house of your chart, an outward energy place...have a party! Don't have an astrology chart? Click here .

It is interesting to note when the current Moon is in the same sign as your birth Moon and to see how the flavor of that day carries through the next 30 days.ting to note when the current Moon is in the same sign as your birth Moon and to see how the flavor of that day carries through the next 30 days.

Current Planet Positions:
Sun - Capricorn, until Jan. 20
Mercury - Capricorn, until Feb. 4
Venus - Sagittarius, until Feb. 4
Mars - Aquarius, until Feb. 23
Jupiter - Pisces, until Jan. 23
Saturn - Libra, until Oct. 6, 2012
Uranus - Pisces, until Mar. 12
Neptune - Aquarius, until Feb. 4, 2012
Pluto - Capricorn, until Nov. 20, 2024

Current Asteroid Positions:
Ceres - Aquarius, until Mar. 22
Pallas - Capricorn, until Mar. 11
Juno - Virgo, until July 28
Vesta - Sagittarius, until Jan. 29
Chiron - Aquarius, until Feb. 18

Current Asteroid Transits:
Ceres - Tact, compromise, and a sense of humor.
Pallas - Evaluate responsibilities and delegate accordingly.
Juno - State clearly what you want in a personal partnership.
Vesta - Beliefs become even more inclusive.
Chiron - Regeneration comes in unusual forms.

Note: Timeframes for Moon signs, void-of-course periods, and current planet & asteroid positions are noted for Eastern time zone (USA). Please adjust according to your own location. Times are not given if the void-of-course Moon occurs for a very short period or if it occurs during the night (based on same Eastern time zone).

* v/c = Void-of-Course - When the Moon is void-of-course, spend time working on projects already in progress, creative endeavors, or self-improvement. Void-of-course simply means that no planets are aspecting the Moon as it gets ready to change signs. It's best not to start new projects, sign important agreements, or go shopping when the Moon is void-of-course because the result will probably be unsatisfactory in some way.

** Mercury Retrograde - the speed of the planet slows down considerably. Communications, paperwork, electronics, and traffic can become very mixed-up or delayed during this time. A situation will be in the process of changing, so wait until Mercury is direct to finalize anything. In general, maintain a slower, more cautious pace in daily affairs. Always allow at least two days before (to slow down) and after (to resume regular activities) a Mercury retrograde period. Read More about Mercury Retrograde here

If The Earth Could Talk

If The Earth Could Talk is a site developed by Quebec Geoscience and is 'intended as a general introduction to the earth sciences.' Available in both French and English, 'you will find a series of fascinating topics, explained in clear, simple terms.' The first impression of the site is that it is geared to a young audience but the facts presented will be of interest to older students. In addition to facts, there are puzzles and quizzes; add the graphics and students have a site that will make learning about earth sciences fun! As the introduction states, you'll surely 'Enjoy your visit!'

Moonshine

MOONSHINE

The tides of the Moon affect us all. Waxing Moons are a time of growth; waning Moons are concerned with reduction and cleansings. It is accepted that Full Moons are potent times for magic. They usually have a powerful effect on people, and in general I try to make a point of spending some time each night outside under the moonlight so that I can absorb the Moon's power.

This night, I had gone to bed and was awoken from a strange, unremembered dream by the compelling call of a rock I'd picked up from a beach in Wales some years before.

The palm-sized stone sat on my bedroom windowsill bathing in the powerful rays of the Full Moon. In the past, I always thought of it as a grayish color, with white quartz inclusions and red iron-ore stains over much of its surface. Now I saw instead that the stone glowed ice white in the moonlight and was pulsing with a new and more powerful kind of energy.

The urge to meditate at this moment was quite strong, so I took the rock downstairs where my son was watching television. Our house is not large. The only rooms free of sleeping family members are the bathroom and kitchen, and both are very tiny. The weather was not good enough to go outdoors, so I decided to stay in the TV room and create my own quiet place. Here's what happened next:

I went through my usual relaxation routine quietly, visualizing a sphere of white light surrounding me as I sat in an armchair and rested my chin on my hands. I looked at the stone that I held. It was roughly triangular, and I held the apex uppermost.

Suddenly I felt the energy of the Moon connect with the stone, and I had the impression of being lifted from my body, which remained quietly seated on a chair, half-listening to the low murmur of the television. My astral body rose up and up, out of the house, carried aloft by the energies in the stone. It traveled past the atmosphere and continued up to the Moon, where the orb's divine power greeted and embraced me. My spirit was absorbed into that of the Moon, and part of the Moon spirit became aware of my luminance shining down upon the Earth. Brightly though I tried to shine, I found it impossible to make the Earth bright enough, and I realized, feeling foolish, that it was night in my hemisphere, and that daylight was a gift of the Sun, not the Moon.

Nevertheless there were lights on the planet. Bright flashes shot up from the surface like so many fireworks. The colors were brilliant and beautiful. But they left behind wounds--deep holes and crumbling piles of rock that should have been part of the Earth's crust.

The Moon deity, who was both male and female, showed me that these bright flashes were leaks of energy where the Earth had been damaged by mining. By far the worst damage was caused where crystals were being extracted. The energy was flying from these places at a tremendous rate, depleting the energy field and the life force of the living planet.

I knew then that I was being asked to act to correct the problem. My return journey was not so easy as the outward one. I had taken the form of a tiny asteroid with a fiery tail, and, as I was flying in a fast arc, it took a while to navigate myself back into the atmosphere.

The silver thread that connected me to my earthbound body had become stretched and tangled, making my journey all the more difficult as my astral and physical bodies reeled it in to bring the disparate parts back together. I remember flying over the various continents as I circled the globe trying to find my way home.

At this point I was afraid that I would never find my body again, but then the British mainland came into view and all I had to do then was locate my home. The shining thread was brighter and straighter now, so I let it pull me back safely.

At last I settled with a slight jolt back into my body and opened my eyes with a clear understanding of my task. First, I must bring a halt to, or at least slow down the rate of, crystal mining on the Earth. My secondary task was of rather less urgency, but one to be achieved in time. I needed to help people understand that though the Moon has qualities that appear feminine, the deity has both masculine and feminine aspects. The energies of both are of equal importance. The same goes for the Sun. So these are the purposes too of this article. I hope you will take these messages to heart.

Since my journey, I've been quietly campaigning to protect the Earth by encouraging the use of magical tools that don't need to be dug up. I have also frequently aired my strong views on environmental matters to various media and forums. May you go in peace under the light of the Moon.

Candlemas/Imboloc Herbs

CANDLEMAS/IMBOLC HERBS

This time is known by some as the "Feast of the Waxing Light" it is the time of year that we are beginning to notice
the Sun Gods growth in that the days are becoming longer. This, like MayDay/Beltane, is another pagan holiday
which has survived into the current time, now it is celebrated as Ground Hog Day.

ANGELICA--is best in the ritual cup. In this manner is considered to bring one in contact with the inhabitants of Atlantis and to bring Atlantean energies into their lives, visions and understanding.

BASIL--this is the traditional time of year for initiations and the initiate should have been taking daily tonics of basil for at least the last two weeks. It is given now to prepare the innerself for initiation to bring fortitude.

BAY--if the ritual is to be a solemn occasion then it is appropriate to chew one or two (no more than that!) Leaves and meditate upon the growing light and Sun God.

BENZOIN--is used in the incense.

CELANDINE--is used in the ritual cup and tossed into the fire.

HEATHER--is used to decorate the entire space.

MYRRH--is used in the ritual cup and/or incense.

Women Who Roar

Women Who Roar
10 ways to be a lioness and change the world
BY: Shelby Sledge
The king of the jungle always gets the attention. But shouldn't we spend some time looking at the power behind the throne, the queen of the jungle? Lisa Bevere, author of "Lioness Arising: Wake Up and Change Your World" believes we should. Women are like the lioness. They are powerful, strong and nurturing. Remember: You are stunning. You were born for this moment. Don't be afraid of your strength, questions, or insights. Awaken, rise up and dare to realize all you were created to be.

The Lioness is a good mother.
A lioness will not endanger another lioness's cub any more than she'd endanger her own. As women, we should be committed to putting distance between all Earth's children and whatever endangers them or threatens them. It is not enough to be concerned with our own children. Every child deserves an equal chance of survival. Every child needs to be protected, nurtured, trained and provided for.

A Lioness is a strong and powerful creature.
The Lioness is at ease with her strength, at rest with her power They are powerful hunters, but spend much of their time in rest and play. Women are the same. If we limit ourselves with our fear of our own might, we forfeit our strength and beauty. When we stop struggling in our own ability, our true strength is revealed. Embrace your strength! Do not mistake meekness for weakness! It is tempered strength and controlled might!

The Lioness sets aside former limitations.
Lionesses often fail when they first learn to hunt, but that doesn't mean they never hunt again. Hardship is a catalyst for improvement. You may fail at your first attempts to develop strength, but this is part of the learning process. Accept your failures as stepping stones to your strength and future successes.

The Lioness helps those who falter.
A lioness will bring meat to a lion that is afraid to venture into the wilderness himself. Women should also reach out to those who need help. Turning back or waiting for others may slow you down, but only at first. The deliberate extension of goodness, generosity and wisdom always wins out in the end.

The Lioness hunts with other lionesses.
Lionesses are the only big cats that hunt in concerted groups. They also groom each other after the hunt. Women must help each other keep our lives clean. We speak into one another's lives and invite others to give their input as well. Together, we laugh, cry, pray and confess fears, sins and weaknesses. Sometimes we disagree but that doesn't mean we disband. Just as lionesses hunt together, without competition and without breaking rank, no woman's portion or contribution is more significant than another's. Each woman has her own skill set that contributes to a valued whole.

The Lioness is stunning.
A lioness is a beautiful creature. They move with purpose, aware that the survival of their pride depends on their legacy of skill and strength. Women of every shape, size and color are as stunning, wild and fierce as the lioness. There is incredible beauty in the strength of a woman. You are capable of incredible things. Recognize this and revel in it!

The Lioness has prowess.
Lionesses are the height of hunting prowess. Their ability to provide for their pride is unmatched. Like the lioness, women too have prowess. There is exceptional ability, strength or valor waiting to be developed in every woman's life. You may not know or do everything, but what you do know, you chose to do well!

The Lioness hunts in the dark.
A lioness has the ability to see in the dark. She can take the smallest point of light and transform it into sight. Women too should take the smallest points of light and hope and transform them into sight. There are desperate people all over the world who are trapped in the darkness, waiting for someone to bring hope into their lives. There is power in the realization of a connection, that we are not alone in our struggles. So reach out to those around you with darkness in their lives and offer them hope, love and light!

The Lioness lives in the light.
When a lioness isn't hunting, she has no reason to move about in the shadows. She conducts her life in the open, sun-filled expanses of Africa. She feels no shame and no need to hide. Like the lioness, women must live their lives in the open with a light-filled heart. You alone have the power to open your life to sunlight and live without fear or shame.

Lionesses roar.
When the cubs are threatened, lionesses will roar as a group in a fearless proclamation of protection. Women must also be a voice for the voiceless. We must learn to live what is within us out loud. All the intangibles of faith, hope and love become tangible within individuals, and are expressed in our unified response to the world's needs. Our roar will be the collective expression of hope and love to everyone around us and to all those who need us.

Cauldron Magic

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Mon Jan 17, 2011 8:42 pm (PST)

CAULDRON MAGIC

In contemporary Witchcraft, the cauldron is an important magical
tool that symbolically combines the influences of the ancient elements of air, fire, water, and earth. Its shape is representative of Mother Nature, and the three legs upon which it stands correspond to the three aspects of the Triple Goddess, the three lunar phases (waxing, full, and waning), and to three as a magical number. Additionally, the cauldron is a symbol of transformation (both physical and spiritual), enlightenment, wisdom, the womb of the Mother Goddess, and rebirth.

Since early times, cauldrons have been used not only for boiling
water and cooking food, but for heating up magical brews, poisons, and healing potions. They have also been utilized by alchemists and by Witches as tools of divination, containers for sacred fires and incense, and holy vessels for offerings to the gods of old.

If a large cauldron is needed in a ritual, it is generally placed
next to the altar, on either side. Small cauldrons, such as ones used for the burning of incense, can be placed on top of the altar.

In the Middle Ages, most of the population believed that all Witches
possessed a large black cauldron in which poisonous brews and vile
hell-broths were routinely concocted. These mixtures were said to have contained such ingredients as bat's blood, serpent's venom, headless toads, the eyes of newts, and a gruesome assortment of animal and human body parts, as well as deadly herbs and roots.

In fourteenth-century Ireland, a Witch known as Lady Alice Kyteler
was said to have used the enchanted skull of a beheaded thief as her
cauldron. Also in the fourteenth century, a male Witch by the name of William Lord Soulis was convicted in Scotland for a number of sorcery-related offenses. His peculiar form of execution was death by being boiled alive in a huge cauldron.

According to an old legend, if a sorceress dumped the vile contents
of her cauldron into the sea, a great tempest would be stirred up.

Ancient Irish folklore is rich with tales of wondrous cauldrons that
never run out of food at a feast, while an old Gypsy legend told of a brave hero who was boiled in a cauldron filled with the milk of man-eating mares.

It is said that bad luck will befall any Witch who brews a potion in
a cauldron belonging to another. If the lid is accidentally left off
the cauldron while a magical brew is prepared, this portends the arrival of a stranger, according to a superstitious belief from Victorian England.

The cauldron and its powers are associated with many goddesses from
pre-Christian faiths, including Hecate (the protectress of all
Witches), Demeter/Persephone (in the Eleusinian mysteries), the Greek
enchantresses Circe and Medea, Siris (the Babylonian goddess of fate and mother of the stars, whose cauldron was made of lapis lazuli), the Celtic goddess Branwen, and others. Perhaps the most well-known and significant goddess with a connection to the cauldron is the Celtic goddess Cerridwen, from whose cauldron bubbled forth the gifts of wisdom and inspiration.

Although the cauldron has traditionally been a symbol of the divine
feminine since the earliest of times, there exist a number of male deities from various Pagan pantheons who also have a connection to it. Among them are the Norse God Odin (who acquired his shape-shifting powers by drinking from the cauldron of wise blood), the Hindu sky god Indra (whose myth is similar to Odin's), and Cernunnos (the Celtic horned god who was dismembered and boiled in a cauldron to be reborn).

Depicted on the famous Gunderstrup cauldron (circa 100 B.C.) is the
stag-horned Cernunnos in various scenes with different animals.
Believed by many to be of Celtic origin, this large silver cauldron may have once been used in sacrificial rites.

The use of sacrificial cauldrons can be traced to the ancient
religious and magical practices of various European cultures, as well as to some shamanic traditions. Human and animal victims would first be beheaded over the cauldrons and then have their blood drained out into the cauldron, where it would be boiled to produce a mystical substance. Among the Celts, a potion of inspiration was said to have been brewed in such a manner by the priestess of the lunar goddess.

The cauldron is linked to the Holy Grail--a chalice that is believed
by Christians to have been used by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper.
However, prior to its incorporation into Christian myth in the twelfth century, the Grail belonged to British Paganism as a symbol of reincarnation and the divine womb of the Goddess.

THE CAULDRON OF CERRIDWEN

Cerridwen, a deity associated with the feminine symbols of water and
the Moon, is the shape-shifting Celtic goddess of inspiration, wisdom,
and the magical arts of enchantment, divination, and prophecy. She
possesses the three aspects of the maiden, mother, and crone, and is a goddess whose invocation is a significant aspect of both the initiatory and mystery rites of Celtic magic.

In her mysterious cauldron, according to ancient Celtic legend,
Cerridwen prepared a potion of enlightenment for her son that consisted of the yellow flowers of the cowslip, fluxwort, hedgeberry, vervain, the berries of the mistletoe (a plant sacred to the Druids), and the foam of the ocean. It was warmed by the breath of nine maidens, and required brewing for a year and a day.

A youth named Gwion drank three drops of the potion, causing the
rest of the brew to turn into poison and destroy the cauldron. To hide from the angry goddess, he used his newly acquired shape-shifting powers to change himself into a grain of wheat. However, Cerridwen transformed herself into a black hen and devoured him.

CAULDRON SPIRIT

Many Witches pour a bit of ordinary surgical spirit (rubbing
alcohol) into their cast iron cauldrons and light it by carefully dropping in a it match. This is often done as part of healing rituals, invocations to the elemental spirit of fire, scrying divinations, sabbat fire festivals, and various working rituals. (NOTE: A quarter cup of rubbing alcohol will burn for approximately three minutes). Be sure that the cauldron is resting securely on a fireproof stand and is not close to any flammable substances. Do not touch the cauldron while it is hot unless you cover your hands with protective oven mitts. If the fire must be extinguished before it burns itself out, smother it by covering the cauldron with a lid or by sprinkling salt or sand over
the flames. Remember, whenever working with the element of fire, use caution and common sense, and respect the spirits of the flame.

The sight of a cauldron blazing with fire can be very magical and
mesmerizing, and when the alcohol has been steeped in aromatic
herbs, a sweet but gentle incense-like fragrance is produced. To make an herbal cauldron spirit, put a small bunch of any or all of the following into a glass bottle: fresh lavender flowers and leaves, fresh mint leaves, fresh rosemary flowers and leaves, and fresh thyme flowers and leaves. Fill the bottle to the top with alcohol, cap it tightly, and then give it a good shake. Keep it in
a cool place for thirteen days, shaking it twice daily (every sunrise and every moonrise). Strain it through a double thickness of muslin into a clear bottle. Cap it tightly and store it away from heat or flame. Cauldron spirit will keep indefinitely.

CAULDRON DIVINATION

Divination is an art that has been practiced in one form or another
since ancient times and in all levels of culture.

There are a number of ways in which a cauldron can be used for
divining. One method is to fill the cauldron with water or wine and place it between two burning candles or under the bright silver rays of the Full Moon. Relax, clear your mind of all distracting thoughts, and then gaze into the cauldron as you would a crystal ball. As with other forms of scrying, your vision will begin to blur after a while and a slight haze will begin to materialize. Keep your gaze focused and eventually a vision, either of an actual or symbolic nature, may be revealed to you.

To determine good or bad omens, according to an old Pagan method,
place a cauldron on the ground and burn some incense (traditionally
frankincense) or a handful of dried herbs in it. Mugwort, rose petals, vervain, or yarrow are popular herbs of divination among Witches. If the smoke rises straight up to the heavens, this indicates a good omen. If it does not rise or if it touches the ground, this indicates a bad one.

The Magic of the Void

The Magic of the Void

It's a place that is not a place, a state of consciousness, much
sought after, and yet entirely nonexistent. After all, "void" means
nothing, right? It's part of a New Age nonclamenture which may well stretch on into infinity.

So what is the void, anyway?

That depends on who you talk to.

The 1960s Void

I suspect that most members of the New Age community first learned
about the void back in the 1960s--that is, if they're old enough for that--whence it came bursting into the collective consciousness thanks to Tim Leary, Richard Alpert, and Ralph Metzner's interesting, though sometimes fanciful, translation of The Tibetan Book of the Dead. This notorious "Harvard Three" made the void sound like a perpetual psychedelic fantasy of colors and lights.

But according to The Tibetan Book of the Dead itself, the void is
actually something quite different from this psychedelic fantasy. In fact, it isn't a something at all. It's a nothing.

In classic Buddhism, the word for void is sunyata, which means simply
"emptiness." But there's a catch to this particular emptiness. It
actually signifies the emptiness that occurs after you have poured something out of a container. So the void is where you go after you empty out all your garbage, all your thoughts, all your conditioning, everything human or imperfect, and so on.

The True Nature of the Void

If there is a creation of the mind, then what is left over? What is
there that had not been created by the busy, active, restless entity that is your mind?

And the answer is, you guessed it, the void. The void is the primal
state of emptiness which occurs when everything else is cleared out. It is not quite the same as Nirvana. This emptying is, in fact, the goal of most Eastern meditation.

There's also a void in the Western tradition. And no, I don't mean
just a gap in our knowledge. I mean a conceptual void, similar to the ideas of the Eastern philosophies.

It is mentioned in the first chapter of Genesis in the Bible; "The
earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep." Is this the same void? You bet. The actual Hebrew term is tohu bohu, and it is a peculiar void indeed. Way back in Babylon, the primal chaos, or void from which all things sprang, was perceived as a dragon, and the dragon's name was Tiamat. The Hebrew Bible contains a great deal of common Near Eastern myth disguised as theology. Tohu bohu, therefore, is none other than the cosmic dragon Tiamat--meaning chaos and the void are seen in the Western tradition as a kind of serpent or dragon, a formless chaotic energy from which all things began.

And the dragon is a lady. Tiamat is a female dragon, and one
suspects that tohu bohu was the same. In Babylon, a godly patriarch named Marduk kills the dragon, and in the Bible Yahweh does the same thing--except that the dragon has taken on a different name and is referred to as Leviathan.

So focused rational consciousness exerts its control over the mystic,
mysterious, serpentine, and feminine depths of energy which is the
void.

Some of you would like say at this point: This is not necessarily a
good thing!

But do take note of the fact that this Western void seems decidedly
feminine in character. After all, the dragon was a lady. Can we say the same thing of the Buddhist void?

W. Y. Evans-Wentz, the original translator of The Tibetan Book of the
Dead, says that: "Bliss is the father, and the void which perceives it is the mother. Radiance is the father, and the void which perceives it is
the mother. Intellect is the father. Void is the mother."

East or West, all the same.

The void is where you go when you lay down the heavy burden of the
intellect and return into the eternal empty space of the cosmic mother.

Happy trails to you.

Imbolc

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Imbolc - February 2nd
Also known as Imbolg, Oimelc, the Feast of Brigid, and Candlemas.
This page has been contributed by June from the MuddlePuddle List - thank you June!

What it means

Imbolc translates as 'in the belly', so this should give you some idea of what this festival is about - the early stirrings of Spring in the womb of the Earth. The seeds are starting to stir in the ground, despite the cold. One of the other names for this festival, Oimelc, means 'in milk' This refers to the beginning of lactation in cows and ewes, as this is the time of year that calves and lambs are born. It is a Fire festival but with the emphasis on Light, celebrating it's return as the days grow longer with the return of the Sun.

Brigid (pronounced Breed) is a Celtic Goddess who rules over midwifery, healing, fires, inspiration and much more. For a short piece on how her attributes were transferred to the Christian St Brigid and more general information on her, click on her name.

Ways to celebrate

Imbolc is traditionally a time for purification, which has given rise to spring-cleaning! Brush those cobwebs away and start afresh.

As this is a time of rebirth and new beginnings it's also an appropriate time for thinking about what you'd like to accomplish, for making attainment goals, choosing a new skill to learn.

Make an offering of milk to the earth as a token of fertility, just pour the milk on to the ground.

Bring the Light in to your home! Lighting candles in every window is traditional, as is leaving them to burn down. Obviously this isn't always practical, or safe, so I tend to only do this in the room I'm spending time in.

Things to make and do

Make a Brigid's Cross in her honour, and as a symbol of protection for the coming year. You can use grasses, reeds, straws or rushes, whichever you have available. If the stalks won't bend easily then pre-soak them for a short while in water, it will make them more flexible. Full details are shown here:

It could be fun to make the candles that you light in your windows after dark. You should be able to buy kits or basics for candle-making at a local craft shop, and probably many places online.

In keeping with the early stirring of Spring aspect of the festival, plant a seed in a pot. The pot can be decorated by hand, with whatever symbols you find appropriate. Suggestions would be the Sun, lit candles, or Brigid's Cross.

Things to eat

A celebratory meal should include things made of milk, honey, green shoots, seeds and soda bread:

Other Information

If the weather is good on Imbolc it is supposed to predict a long winter, whereas if it's bad then winter is almost over.

If the sun shines bright on Candlemas Day,
The half of Winter's not yet away.
or
If Candlemas Day is bright and clear,
There'll be two Winter's in the year.

In America Groundhog Day is on February 2nd, which is also to do with predicting when Winter will end.
