A Blessing For Imbolc
Posted by Maurissa

May the light always shine for you
May the god and goddess bless you with the light of a thousand suns
And may you dance under the light of a thousand moons

May you shine in the light of blessing
May you see the stars and know
That even in the greatest of darkness light will find you
And remember that in this greatest of darkness the smallest light
Will shine

May the darkness be only a reminder of light yet to come
And if the darkess grows too great
May i be there with a candle to light your way

A Gift For Brigit
Candlemas
By Amber K & Azrael Arynn K

Remember leaving milk and cookies out for Santa on Christmas Eve? The custom probably came from Brigit's feast day and she would probably appreciate it if you left less for the "jolly old elf" and remembered to leave something for her.

Apparently her tastes are simple. A loaf of bread and a jug of milk are quite sufficient. Cake would not be spurned. Even a piece of buttered bread on the churn is appreciated, since Brigit is the goddess who presides over the making of butter. And don't forget to put a candle in the window, so she knows there's a snack waiting at your house.

Not all customary offerings are edible, at least after the house holders is done with them: "Another ancient custom involved the throwing of a sheaf of oats or cake of bread against the doorstep on the eve of Imbolg to drive away hunger during the coming year." Yet another tradition involves pouring milk on your threshold as a blessing or libation (preferably not when the neighbors are watching). You are certainly allowed to modify the custom and simply sprinkle a drew drops.

In a related custom, "Sometimes…. A bundle of straw or fresh rushes were laid on the threshold for her to kneel upon to bless the house, or possibly so she – or the cow! Could wipe their feet before entering." Cow? Yes. Legend says that Brigit travels with a white cow, so some hay, grass or corn would be appropriate.

Imbolc - A Welcoming Ritual

A Welcoming Ritual
Candlemas
By Amber K & Azrael Arynn K

A little ritual is still used to welcome Brigit (and therefore spring) in many Celtic homes. A member of the family goes out to gather the rushes for making Brigit's crosses. When they return, they cover their head and knock at the door. Someone opens the door, and the woman of the house (Bean an Tighe) greets the family member: "Welcome Bright" (Failte leat a Bhrid), to which the stand-in for Brigit replies "God bless the people of this house" (Beannacht De ar Daoine an tighe seo).

As part of this ceremony, you might add this translation of a Scottish Gaelic invocation:

May Brigit give blessing to the house that is here;
Brigit, the fair and tender…
Rich-tressed maiden of ringlets of gold.

Once "Brigit" has offered her blessing, the evening's activities begin in earnest; the making of the Brigit's crosses, games stories, divination and feasting.
