My Top 3 Rules for Pagan Living--Part 2

My Top 3 Rules for Pagan Living--Part 2

In the Pagan community, there is amazing individuality and diversity. While this article acknowledges the vast differences among Pagans, it does not include practitioners of dark or harmful arts in the general observation of the Pagan community.

Though we are all unique in our particular Pagan identity, our commonly held beliefs reflect the underlying principles of our Pagan faith, and are woven through our rituals, practices, gatherings, and community. A few of our common beliefs are almost non-negotiable. For me, the three rules underlying my Pagan practice, the rules I live by are:

*Harm no one
*What goes around comes around
*To my own self be true

These three rules encompass an evolved and complex thought system, developed over time, that helps to keep my words, attitudes, actions, and behavior under control. With the rules as a guide, I am able to live peacefully, fruitfully, and companionably with diverse communities; maintain a spiritual focus that reflects my deeply held beliefs; and actively engage in the creation of the kind of life I want to live--to be the kind of person I admire.

I wouldn't have a structure to keep me focused without rules to serve as a guidepost, and I might not truly thrive. Before you object to any imposition of rules, let me explain what they mean to me.

This rule underlies many practices and spiritual faiths throughout the world. Think of the Judeo-Christian Ten Commandments, the teachings of the Bible and the Qur'an. Even the Hippocratic oath that is taken by most doctors has the sentiment of "harm no one" imbedded within it. The Wiccan Rede supports the premise that harm no one is a universal Pagan belief. "Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill: An' it harm none, Do what ye will."

In my experience, most Pagans practice the notion of harming no one. Most practitioners of an earth-based and earth-honoring spirituality are guided by the cycles of Earth, Sun, and Moon. While we acknowledge the natural cycles of decay, composting, and rebirth, we do not subscribe to any destructive, harmful, or so-called "dark" arts. Universal laws, also sometimes called the Laws of Nature, do not change and cannot be broken. Universal Law states that whatever you plant is what you will harvest.

Most Pagans are aware of the dangers of planting harmful seeds. We know that when we plant a tomato seed, a tomato will grow. We have to ask ourselves--if we sow seeds of violence, hatred, intolerance, and corruption, what sort of crop will we harvest?

If you are observant of the cycles of nature, you know that the purpose of decay is to rot organic matter enough to create fertile soil, sowing of fruits, vegetables, trees, and flowers is the ultimate task of nature, and like the macrocosm of nature that we live within, most Pagans want to grow goodness. So harm no one, plant only good seeds, and harvest a positive bounty. This leads to the second rule.

What Goes Around Comes Around

Universal Law also holds that all energy is circular. So the concept of "what goes around comes around" has its roots in finite science. It is derived from physics, and the Universal Law that describes how energy moves. All energy molecules, atoms, and the planets move in a circular motion. Since we humans are made up of energy, this universal law applies to us and by extension to our interactions.

Universal Laws exist in a wide variety of cultures and are included in many religious and spiritual texts. They are often heard as slogans, stated as rules, or used as catch-all in response to many situations. They also appear in old adages and sayings. Tried and tested over time, these laws have helped to keep us on a path of helpful, uplifting, and prosperous living. Indeed, without such laws, our Pagan practice could be entirely different, succumbing to some of the so-called "dark" arts, engaging in destructive, oppressive, and undermining magic.

Lets' face it. Life is hard, and there is lots of hurt in it. There are also lots of hurtful people. While I don't believe in hurting other people and go to great lengths to make sure I don't harm myself, there are times when I feel hurt by other people or situations. It is during those times that I face the deep spiritual challenge of trying not to succumb to the desire for revenge. It is sometimes easy tojustify hurting someone else, because they hurt me first. But, I believe that what goes around comes around, and that means for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

When I am faced with a desire for revenge, I remind myself both of the universal law and the commonly-held Pagan Threefold Law, which states that everything comes back to you three times.

I know that I am unwilling to purposefully bring negativity into my life, as life has enough little difficult moments as it is, so I choose not to send negative energy out into the universe.

While I sometimes think vengeful thoughts, I do not act upon them. I go back to the Universal Law and am assured that there is no need for revenge, as the Universe will indeed give back to everyone exactly what they dished out. So whoever did me wrong, will get theirs without me getting involved.

Not only does it make me feel as though my hurt has been revenged, but it keeps me from doing something bad that would come back on me. And it counsels me to be very aware of my actions, because what I do will come back to me for sure and, in all likelihood, threefold.

To Mine Own Self Be True

While I limit my magic to helpful magic, I also strive to be true to myself. That means that even though I am trying not to harm anyone else, I must also be sure not to harm myself. I continuously examine my intentions, making sure I don't compromise my own beliefs just to please other people. I don't need to diminish my own self-worth, just to get someone to like me. And I don't need to abandon what I believe and hold close to my heart so I fill fit in, either.

In some ways Harm No One encompasses To My Own Self Be True, and includes the premise that I don't harm myself either. This means honoring and uplifting my spirit and self-esteem; it means continuing to do the work that is necessary to heal my spirit and bring myself to myself and my life. Taking care of me is the most important work I do, because when I am well and fit, I am better able to care for my family, community, and planet.

Rules to Thrive By

If we accept that we live in an interactive cosmos and that what goes around comes around, it is crucial not to send out negative energy (Harm No One), not even to ourselves (To My Own Self Be True), then we have some commonality within community. These rules can support how we live and what we hold as valuable.

But don't worry, we need not apply or interpret these rules identically either. Because we are diverse, our interpretation and practice of these three rules will differ, too. My personal Pagan practice doesn't include the imbibing of alcohol or drugs, not even in ritual, because I believe that these substances are harmful to me. Others imbibe and feel good doing so.

While I respect other people's right to sexual freedom, and I witness lots of interesting expressions of sexuality in community and at rituals and gatherings, I choose to remain monogamous with my partner, because I don't want to harm our relationship.

So be unique, but think about creating positive Pagan communities by subscribing to these rules to live by. Decide how they can apply to your life, your Pagan practice, and your interactions within your community. These really are rules to thrive by.

Try Peppermint in your bathroom for a refreshing
eye opener in the morning.
Adding a few drops to a Scent Ball is an way to accomplish this.
Plugs into any electrical outlet. You may also use a terra cotta
stone or pottery.

Lemon or any other Citrus is also nice and less stimulating.

This Week's Moonscopes Forecast

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Sun Mar 27, 2011 7:51 pm (PDT)

This Week's Moonscopes Forecast
For the week of March 27 to April 2
(Missed last week's forecast? Here it is.)

Sunday: the Moon is in Capricorn
Last week's Saturday forecast talked about some of the things associated with the sign Capricorn such as rules, tasks, organization, accomplishment, and things that last a long time. In generations and times not that long ago, one of the activities people did on Sunday was visiting family members. This also falls under the umbrella of Capricorn - honoring tradition and family connections, keeping the ties that bind as strong as possible in order to maintain the foundation of the family history.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday: the Moon is in Aquarius
Break out of the mold - and then, actually break the mold itself. Often a totally new beginning or new way of approaching things comes up when Aquarius is in charge. It's not so much "back to the drawing board" as it is "invent the next drawing board". Who knows what will happen and that's just the way Aquarius likes it.

Wednesday evening, Thursday(*v/c), Friday(v/c): the Moon is in Pisces
A little confusion can often show up when Pisces, the sign that shrouds things in fog or mist, is around. Sometimes this can be interpreted as a test of faith in what is unanswerable at the moment but that will work out later if given some time. When knowing the unknowable is not possible, a trust in the universal nature is the only option. Change of subject - note the two full days, one right after the other, of the Moon being void-of-course and keep things more low key than usual.

Saturday: the Moon is in Aries
The sign Aries really likes to charge forward without thinking twice about anything. However, with Mercury currently retrograde in this same sign (see below), it would be best to proceed with at least a smidgen of caution.

Check your astrology chart to find which house (section of your chart) has the current Moon sign on the cusp (the beginning edge) & apply Forecast information to that area of your life as well.
For example, the Moon is in Leo and one of the suggestions is to entertain - however Leo is located in the 12th house of your chart, which is an inward energy place...then have a small, quiet gathering. By contrast, if Leo is located in the 1st house of your chart, an outward energy place...have a party! Don't have an astrology chart? Click here .

It is interesting to note when the current Moon is in the same sign as your birth Moon and to see how the flavor of that day carries through the following 30 days.

Current Planet Positions:
Sun - Aries, until Apr. 20
Mercury - Aries, until May 16
(**retrograde Mar. 30-Apr. 23)
Venus - Pisces, until Apr. 21
Mars - Pisces, until Apr. 2
Jupiter - Aries, until June 5
Saturn - Libra, until Oct. 6, 2012
Uranus - Aries, until May 16, 2018
Neptune - Aquarius, until Feb. 4, 2012
(Pisces, Apr. 5-Aug. 5, 2011)
Pluto - Capricorn, until Nov. 20, 2024

Current Asteroid Positions:
Ceres - Pisces, until Jan. 20, 2012
Pallas - Aquarius, until Feb. 13, 2012
Juno - Virgo, until July 28
Vesta - Capricorn, until Apr. 3
Chiron - Pisces, until Apr. 22, 2018

Current Asteroid Transits:
Ceres - Harvest the core basics of spiritual beliefs or philosophies.
Pallas - A practical application of information is the best approach.
Juno - State clearly what is wanted in a personal partnership.
Vesta - Solidify desires with the ideal organization of Nature.
Chiron - Transcend wounds and negativity through compassion.

Note: Timeframes for Moon signs, void-of-course periods, and current planet & asteroid positions are noted for Eastern time zone (USA). Please adjust according to your own location. Times are not given if the void-of-course Moon occurs for a very short period or if it occurs during the night (based on same Eastern time zone).

* v/c = Void-of-Course - When the Moon is void-of-course, spend time working on projects already in progress, creative endeavors, or self-improvement. Void-of-course simply means that no planets are aspecting the Moon as it gets ready to change signs. It's best not to start new projects, sign important agreements, or go shopping when the Moon is void-of-course because the result will probably be unsatisfactory in some way.

** Mercury Retrograde - the speed of the planet slows down considerably. Communications, paperwork, electronics, and traffic can become very mixed-up or delayed during this time. A situation will be in the process of changing, so wait until Mercury is direct to finalize anything. In general, maintain a slower, more cautious pace in daily affairs. Always allow at least two days before (to slow down) and after (to resume regular activities) a Mercury retrograde period. Read More about Mercury Retrograde here

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"Everything's so simple, and we make everything so complicated. That's why we're confused."

-- Vickie Downey, TEWA/Tesuque Pueblo

The Creator designed a very simple set of Laws for us to follow. If we follow these simple things, we'll be happy. If we don't follow these simple things, our lives become complicated. For example:
Respect Mother Earth
Love one another
Be truthful
Give to your brother and sisters
Be gentle with each other
Be happy

Following these simple Laws will have great rewards.

Great Spirit, let me lead a simple life.

The Museum of Online Museums

The Museum of Online Museums MoOM states that it has 'links from our archives to online collections and exhibits covering a vast array of interests and obsessions.' The visitor is invited to 'start with a review of classic art and architecture, and graduate to the study of mundane (and sometimes bizarre) objects elevated to art by their numbers, juxtaposition, or passion of the collector.' Organized into three sections 'The Museum Campus contains links to brick-and-mortar museums with an interesting online presence, 'The Permanent Collection displays links to exhibits of particular interest to design and advertising' and 'Galleries, Exhibition, and Shows, an ecelctic and ever-changing list of interesting links to collections and galleries' - you're sure to find 'where the good stuff is.' This site is an excellent portal to both famous and unknown museum and private collector sites; it demonstrates how the Internet can open museum doors to everyone!

I tested out as green, which doesn't surprise me as it's one of the
two colors I predominantly identify with (the other is blue,
particularly royal or gemstone blues).

Some of the questions were rather interesting:

>2. Your dream job is closest to:

Neither choice fit well. I had to choose between artist and
professor/teacher. My primary occupation choice would have been
writer, which is sort of in the middle between the two. However, I
was a teacher once and I did enjoy it so I went with that choice.

>3. Most important:

I would have liked to choose more than one here because some of the
choice hold equal places in my heart. I chose knowledge above all
else because I'm a hopeless bibliophile and I love to read and learn
about other cultures and religions. However, family and faith are of
equal importance in that respect. I couldn't really live my life
without either of them guiding me. My religious practices have become
indistinguishable from the way I do everything else because I've made
extensive effort to walk the walk. Nature figures in there too, as
does creativity. I would be bereft without my ability to create.

>6. You prefer to dress in:

If I had my way, clothing would be a practical issue based on climate
and environment, not on laws. I HATE clothing, so restricting. Since
I live in the middle of nowhere and there are only adults in this
house, I have the option of wearing...well...nothing and I do so most
of the time. There's a simple feeling of being in harmony with
everything around you when there aren't any artificial barriers
between you and the rest of the world.

>7. Your next vacation would be:

It's actually a combination of two answers. We're going on a cross
country trip taking the back roads so we can see the interesting
things in the America off the interstate but we're also going to end
up visiting a bunch of friends and relatives we haven't seen in a
while.

>8. When you need cheering up you:

Nature never fails to improve my mood and outlook once I just let
myself go and be a part of the dance without worrying about anything
else. However, I'm extremely grateful for the thoughtfulness and
loving my family gives me and I will often spend time with them or
cuddle them to our mutual benefit. Meditation and simple chores around
the house can help set my mood right too because I feel I've
accomplished something.

>9. If you were a food/beverage you would be:

I chose pizza because it's some of my favorite food but it doesn't
really represent me. I'd say a good quality mug of Earl Grey would be
closer or perhaps a taco or a bowl of chili because of my Southwestern
heritage!

>10. Before going to bed you like to:

I generally do end up reading but this is also the time of night the
animals and people get one-on-one time too. I don't watch the news
because it stresses me out.

GREEN

You are a very calm and contemplative person. Others are drawn to your peaceful, nurturing nature.

Hmmm--somewhat true. Not calm and contemplative ALL the time though! :O)

What about one of those digital photo frames? Then it could just rotate them all.

Ok, I have decided that I'm well pas the framing idea and have moved on to the wallpaper idea.

Thanks for another great post Lady N.

You are most welcome.  And, that wallpaper is a great idea!

Thank you. I hope this is the case. Truthfully, we both need the money! So, maybe...

As for your good wishes for me and mine, I hope the same is true for you.
