Hi Verlaya,
I found the Idiots guide books (Idiots guide to paganism & Idiots guide to wicca and witchcraft) a good starting point for information about various things - they can also lead you on with their reference lists. I also like pretty much anything by Scott Cunningham. It's a personal preference though - it needs to resonate with you.
Good Luck

Hi there Verlaya,

I can also recommend "The Wicca Bible" by Anne-Marie Gallagher - here's a link on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Wicca-Bible-Definitive-Guide-Magic/dp/140273008X

Also just thinking on the fly, I think our own Lucy Canvendish has written a good intro book called "White Magic" - here's a link to that one:
http://www.lucycavendish.com/store/node/11

All the best with your studies, Graham.

Witchcraft and Paganism

Greetings.

I beg the tolerance of the list to introduce a topic. possibly one that may prove controversial. If so, let's hope the controversy creates light rather than heat.

So on with the show! Witchcraft and Paganism, are they the same, similar or completely different? Can one be one without being the other and can one be both?

Why introduce this topic? No ulterior motive, just plain curiosity. And yes I do have an opinion, mine being that they are completely different. But hey it's your opinion I am interested in..Thank you in advance.

Bill.

Hi ya Bill
To me, paganism and witchcraft are different. Not all pagans practice witchcraft, and now days we have witches of all creeds and beliefs. Some are even Christian!
I have noticed a lot of new "witches" start out very fluffy, white and new agey. In my day ( now that makes me feel old) witches were pagan, grey and more down to earth.
Maybe that was the company I kept...

paganism has no face so they take to what is sold tp them as authors.. witchcraft is both an important ideal and a exciting experience to both who have faced their spirit and those who hate it, however the neo-pagan recreating its own road.. designed their own messages in witchcraft, which if you are of witchcraft paganism has no place in it.. but a friend...

Greetings Bill

Thanks for posing this interesting question. Just a thought, to spice the question up further, one might also be tempted to throw Shamanism in there as well?

But sticking to your question - I think that both are closely linked, and that one may successfully follow both paths simultaneously, and yet I also think there are some significant differences between the two paths.

To me, paganism is a general term for one who primarily follows a path of worship, respect and celebration of the powers of Nature - underpinned by a careful observance of the changing seasons, planetary influences and the eternal cycles of fertility seen everywhere - as birth, growth, decay and rebirth. Pagans see themselves as very much interconnected to these things, and they seek to exploit to exploit these powers primarily through specifically timed festivals and rituals.

Witchcraft to me offers due reverence and respect to the interconnections, powers and cycles of Nature worshiped by pagans, but I think there is a more significant emphasis on the inner journey in witchcraft - where there is a strong recognition of one's own powers to initiate all manner of actions in the wider world through willfully conjured magic. This is still often done in coordination with external factors, and yet the possibility of doing so independently is also appreciated. To me, there lies a fundamental difference between the two paths.

I know that as soon as I send this, I'm going to think of some more things to say, but I think I've said enough to probably get me into quite enough hot water for the moment <hopefully not> :)

Blessings and best wishes, Graham.

Yes indeed! I agree. For me shamanism has similarities to both W/craft and Paganism but really isn't fully akin to either. Thought on that may prove interesting. And while we are putting a bit more meat in the pot what about Satanism, Lucifer-ism, Settians, Levayans and a few others .

Indeed Graham I know a few folk who do follow both paths and yes it seems to work pretty well for them.

And I'd not argue with that as far as it describes modern Pagan thought, but I'm not convinced that some of the Pagan religions/philosophies held quite as much stock by nature, but then again it would depend on which pre Christian cultures and religions one is prepared to accept as "Pagan". Mithraism being a good case in point.

Yes indeed, mirrors my thought to an extent. Witches do harness the powers around them, some more than others I think also tap outside entities, spirits, Deities and the like. And yes for me thereby lies the difference.

Oh don't worry, you do get used to the slings and arrows after a while:-) I've certainly provoked a few in my time.

Thanks for your kind wishes May I return my best to you.

Thanks for your thoughts. I agree some authors have a lot to answer for.

And I'd propose that Christian, and indeed even Islamic Witches are not just a modern phenomena.
