The area where I have it isn't an altar, but I do have a chest with "magickal" supplies, a candle, incense, a statuette. So, while not REALLY an altar, still I don't put other things there very often. However, I also didn't tell him he shouldn't touch stuff there (he knows I'm pagan, but he isn't--he isn't sure what exactly he is, is still exploring). Usually he doesn't mess with my stuff there (nothing he wants! LOL) but he was in kind of a pinch so I can understand it. Also I was using larger coins in hopes that maybe I could get bigger amount of money (I did it once with mostly pennies--all I had--and ended up with change EVERYWHERE!!!)

I hadn't thought of a digital frame. A good idea.
I kinda like the idea of a wall full of thoughts and wisdom.
Something that catches people's attention.   :)

'Blood Brothers' Shines New Light on Loki

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Mon Mar 28, 2011 11:55 am (PDT)

An animated Web series is imbuing new life to Loki, the mercurial and malevolent god of trickery, just as his big-screen premiere is imminent.

The first episode of Marvel Knights Animation's Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers debuts for download today on iTunes, Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. The next three episodes roll out weekly on Wednesdays starting April 6.
Based on the 2004 Loki miniseries written by Robert Rodi and painted by artist Esad Ribic, Blood Brothers finds the longtime foil — and stepbrother — of Thor finally in control of the legendary Asgard after conquering his father, Odin, and his other enemies.

Loki has been the star and usual villain of many stories since his entry into the Marvel Universe in 1962, and a different tale that was more iconic and recognizable to core fans could have been picked. But Blood Brothers shows Loki in a very complex light, so that audiences will have a better view of the character before actor Tom Hiddleston plays him in the movie Thor, in theaters May 6.

"You get a very in-depth look at why he feels he is the way he is, and maybe people's perception of him being evil is more of him being a misunderstood character," says Thor & Loki producer Ruwan Jayatilleke, a senior vice president with Marvel Entertainment. "As opposed to Loki spending the whole book soliloquizing how wronged he was and so forth, you become sympathetic and empathetic to him.

"Although Thor is portrayed in this story as not being a hero, there's a fair amount of questioning into what motivates him, what motivates Odin and Sif and Balder, this group of Asgardians that Loki feels have been persecuting him and that have set up this scenario from his birth that he's the foil for Thor. Rightfully or wrongfully, he sets about to upturn the system and change the status quo."

Many people analyze the relationship between Thor and Loki on the surface: They're stepbrothers, one's the god of trickery and the other is an iconic thunder dedicated to righting wrongs, Jayatilleke says. Yet Blood Brothers features just as much action as cerebral and universal themes people can identify with, including Loki's questioning of fate vs. free will and nature vs. nurture.

"Some mainstream fans are instantly going to see the character and say, 'OK, that's the bad guy because I know Thor is the good guy.' It's interesting to have these stories not so much to deconstruct the superhero genre, but to look at how these characters eclipse just being heroes and villains," Jayatilleke says. "They have real motivations and ideas beyond just having agendas of 'I want to rule the world, ha ha ha.' That works in a lot of stories — I just don't think it works in this one."

Jayatilleke has been the lead producer on Marvel's other motion comics, including Iron Man: Extremis and Spider-Woman, which add extra CGI elements and storytelling techniques to comic stories. Blood Brothers is the closest Marvel has come to full-on animation within the motion-comic arena.

At the same time, though, even though they could create an entire CGI series, Jayatilleke sees a positive in keeping the artistry of the painted comics pages.

"We don't want to remove emphases on different parts of the story because we're tinkering with making sure a character is just moving around for the sake of moving around," Jayatilleke says. "What makes Marvel Knights Animation cool is you're not losing that key connection to the comic-book page.

"I don't necessarily think animating everything full on with CGI makes everything better. You see a lot of times in movies and TV where a more subtle technique that uses a lot less visual flair is a better way of storytelling than 10 billion explosions in a scene."

There's another reason that he wanted to keep Loki's artistic integrity: his relationships with and respect for the creators. Jayatilleke wanted to make sure the animation is as awesome as possible for fans of the series, of course, but also because he knows Rodi and is friends with Ribic.

My Top 3 Rules for Pagan Living--Part 3

My Top 3 Rules for Pagan Living--Part 3

As the Pagan community grows and evolves, we address many of the same obstacles faced for centuries by mainstream spiritual traditions. We struggle with issues of whether to organize, how far to extend our reach, and whether we should charge for our services. We consider new and better ways to share information and teach younglings and persons new to the path. And, unfortunately, we run into those who proselytize and insist that their way is the one and only, real, honest, true, bona fide, authoritative way--a way written in the books, blessed by the gods, foretold by the ancients, or passed on through the family.

Just the other day, I happened on a Web site for a Druid group that claimed to be the only authentic Druid order in the world and that any other so-called Druid organizations were only play-acting. Likewise, a couple of weeks before that, I interceded in an argument in which one Pagan insisted loudly to another Pagan that "if you didn't cast a circle and call the watchtowers, it wasn't a 'real' ritual." These kinds of discord always set my teeth on edge, because they sound just like the arguments among the mainstream faithful who too often claim--loudly--that it's their way or the highway. As far as I can see, this kind of approach only fosters divisiveness and ends up making people feel disillusioned, defensive, or just plain awful. Spiritual strife drives wedges between us, and it creates divisions instead of fostering shared understanding. These disagreements inevitably happen when one person decides his or her religion is "right."

My First Rule: There is No One True Way

Allow me to explain myself as an example. As a Pagan, I believe in the eminent nature of the universe. I feel that the Divine is within me, and that I have only to look within myself to find it. It's in the hug I exchanged with my dear friend last week; it's in the soil I turned in my garden yesterday morning, and in the last ritual danced under the Full Moon. While these views are my own, I think most magickal people agree that life itself is a dance with the Divine, and that one's personal approach to spirituality finds each person embracing that sacred energy in his or her own way. Some of us do this through formalized ritual, prayer, divination, trance, spellwork, or apprenticeship in a defined order. Others embrace the divine through art, meditation, solitary practice, or even via an afternoon walk through the woods.

If we each strive to feel that same life essence, strive to understand that same essential energy or force and to enfold our lives around a blossoming spirituality, how is it that anyone else can decide his or her way is better or more true than anyone else's? Can we meet on common ground? Can we agree that the wealth of earthly spiritual traditions are different ways to frame one's approach to and connection with universal energy past, present, and future? The person who is Wiccan, Druid, Faerie, Dianic, chaos mage, Jedi, or Satanist has a path as true and real as mine--provided it is tempered with ethics and a sense of responsibility. Which brings me to...

My Second Rule: Do No Harm

Earth is a closed, finite system, and we share the ride with billions of fellow souls. What we do each day, magickal or mundane, affects each of our fellow Earth riders. Every decision we make, every piece of energy sent out into the world, every word uttered, every action taken causes a ripple in the grand cosmic pool and impacts life here on Earth. Therefore, it's our responsibility to make sure that our actions don't cause either real-time or rebound harm to others.

In my own mundane life, I'm a mother, nurse/healer, college teacher, and an impassioned earth-sign. I tend an organic garden and try to live sustainably, while also treating my fellow humans and living creatures with compassion and a sense of humor. In all ways, I work to avoid harming the planet and everyone and everything on her. I temper my magickal workings with care and responsibility, and avoid actions that could harm another. I carry out works that enrich and strengthen my world. For me, this reflects a sense of communal responsibility, a way of ensuring my actions enrich the multiverse rather than weakening it.

My Third Rule: Give Back

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, and those who work regularly with magick understand that to use energy is to create a shift or even a void. What is taken must be replaced--balanced. In keeping with that, I don't follow the traditional Rule of Three. I believe more in the Rule of One and find truth in this simple, singular idea of balance. What is sent out returns, what is taken must be replaced, what is borrowed must be returned, and what is emptied must be refilled. Taken in the other direction, what is used carelessly, without permission or restoration, tips the cosmic scales and generates chaotic tensions and negative effects. These truths apply not just to magickal energy but also to ethical practices and relationships with other living creatures. Giving back is a matter of social and communal responsibility. Even for Pagans, who are known for working on "Pagan time" and bristling in the face of authority because they want to do their own thing sans external rules and boundaries, it takes a village--and intentional cooperation--to work good magick.

These three simple rules provide me with an ethical, interwoven approach to daily magickal life. Follow these guidelines and you'll sow harmony and growth rather than discord and destructiveness. Follow them and you'll approach your fellow humans with compassion and understanding than with antagonism. Your positive actions will feed your soul, and your "village" will thank you.

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"In our modern world today, we may seem like drowning men because of the loss of much of our spiritual tradition."

-- Thomas Yellowtail, CROW

Our spiritual tradition shows us the way to live in harmony, balance and respect. The tradition taught us how to behave and how to conduct ourselves. The spiritual way taught us to pray and to purify ourselves. Handed down from generation to generation were the teachings about a way of life. Our relationship to Mother Earth and to each other was very clear. The Modern World does not relate to spirituality but to materialism. If we do not allow spirituality to guide our lives, we will be lost, unhappy and without direction. We are spiritual beings trying to be human, not human beings trying to be spiritual. It is said, Know thyself.

Grandfather, lead me to spirituality.

Bless This Deck

Bless This Deck

Whether you are new to the Tarot or have been using this ancient tool for
years, it is wise to define exactly what you hope to accomplish in your
relationship with the Tarot. You can do this by composing a mission statement.
Writing a mission statement is way of "working backward" with your Tarot
deck--beginning with the end result (what you hope to accomplish with your deck and
your readings) and building your skills and activities toward that end. Once
you have a clear understanding of your "destination, Once you have a clear
understanding of your "destination," you can better assess where you are
now, what steps are suitable for the end result, and whether you

Developing a Tarot Mission Statement

One way to begin defining your Tarot mission statement is to pose these
questions to yourself: What is my intent for the use of this deck? How can I
best serve others with my Tarot deck? These are not simple questions, so one
way to begin the process of answering them may be to do some thoughtful
journaling about your relationship with the Tarot. You can also pull cards from the
deck, asking specifically for help with this question. The questions you
could ask your Tarot deck might be, "What is the wisdom of the Tarot with
regard to my mission with this tool?" or "What is the Tarot's guidance about my
purpose with itself?"

Mission statements are as different as the people who craft them. Often
they include the desire to develop or enhance intuition, self-understanding, the
ability to "think outside the box," change one's self-image, or the ability
to speak and write creatively. They may also include a reference to one's
spiritual ideal and one's desire to communicate with spiritual forces. Your
mission statement needs to be only one thing: an honest assessment of the
relationship you aspire to create and maintain with your Tarot deck. Once you
have clearly formulated your mission, I urge you to honor your accomplishment by
blessing or "consecrating" the deck of your choice--your favorite Tarot
deck, your new Tarot deck, or even your I-can't-seem- Once you Tarot deck.

There are many ways to bless a deck. Perhaps the simplest way is to lay the
deck in the palm of your hand and place your other hand on top of, or
slightly above, the deck. Then say a prayer or benediction, blessing the cards and
asking that the highest and best wisdom be revealed to you and to all those
who touch and use the deck. You may wish to ask Spirit to assist those who
use your deck in choosing the cards that are right for them. You may wish to
add a short blessing, prayer, or mantra that focuses on your spiritual ideal,
such as love, peace, God/dess--whatever captures the higher spiritual
presence for you. You may ask this spiritual ideal to come forth and envelop the
deck.

Clearing Your Deck

Before you bless your deck, however, it is a good idea to "clear" it first.
There are many ways to do this, the most common method being simply to
shuffle the deck. This is also the best way to impregnate the cards with your
personal energy/magnetism. Other methods of "clearing" a deck:

Reorder the cards in chronological order (both Major and Minor) and keep
them in order for a day or two. Swirl a stick of incense around your deck,
allowing the smoke to both purify the deck and call upon Spirit to infuse the
deck with its power. Dab some oil of lavender around your deck or sprinkle it
with water. Place a clear crystal on top of the deck for a day or so.
Sprinkle your deck with salt. Rap the deck against a table or other hard surface
or fling it across the floor (to shake off any negative energies). Place your
deck under your pillow at night to clear its energy.

In an extreme case--that is, when you feel your deck has been psychically
damaged in some way--you can wrap it, put it in a leak-proof container and bury
it in the earth for a few days, thereby allowing the earth to absorb any of
the deck's negative energy. Similarly, you can use the natural healing
powers of sunlight or moonlight to clear your deck, always being sure to protect
your deck from the elements. Above all else, when clearing and blessing your
deck, think of the deck as your connection to Spirit and that which is
sacred. Treat it with respect and reverence.

"Marking" Your Deck

Once your deck is "clean," hold your hands around the deck and speak your
mission aloud, saying "I consecrate this deck as my tool for ___________ (see
sample blessings below). The ideal would be to do this kind of blessing in a
group, with a supportive friend or colleague as "witness" for your mission
and where you could witness others' commitments to their Tarot decks. After
you have voiced your mission, the next step is to "mark" your deck with
something uniquely you (such as a kiss, a drop of oil that you like, your breath, or
even your saliva). This step makes the deck truly your own. Then I suggest
you follow up immediately (within twenty-four hours) by doing a reading.
This seals the work you have done and ensures that your mission "sticks."

In my experience, developing a Tarot mission statement can be very empowering. Many people find that their relationship with their Tarot deck is
dramatically altered once they have created and articulated their framework for its
use. You may be quite surprised at how your deck will function after this
powerful process. Be prepared for some spectacular insights and results. Be
prepared to feel spiritually uplifted and connected.

A note of caution: Remember that power does not emanate from the Tarot deck.
Power comes from Spirit working inside of you and through you. So use the
ideas mentioned in this article only if they feel right to you. Tarot is a
uniquely individual spiritual tool, so again, remember that the most powerful
and beneficial Tarot deck blessings, clearing techniques, and mission
statements are the ones you create. Trust in Spirit, and in yourself. The results
may surprise you.

Sample Tarot Mission Statements

I consecrate this deck to bring light wherever there is darkness.

I consecrate this deck for guidance and wisdom for myself and others for the
higher good of all concerned.

I consecrate this deck to enlighten myself and others more fully.

May all who use and touch this deck know the love of Spirit and be drawn
into the light of Spirit.

I dedicate this deck to serve others and to bring healing and peace to all
who seek its wisdom.

I dedicate this deck to the development of my intuition so that I may be a
source of guidance to others.
