There are a lot of variations on magick wands, depending on the purpose and the Witchcraft tradition.

In many European based Witchcraft traditions, the magick wand is a simple unadorned stick of natural wood, often with the bark still intact. The wand is typically six inches to two feet in length and a quarter inch to two inches in diameter, either straight or with bends (one slight bend is the most common). The wand can be cut, but usually it is uncut and kept exactly as it was found laying on the ground in nature. Witches used to break dead branches off of trees.

In earlier times Witches broke off dead wood, never sawing or cutting live wood. This policy actually helped keep the forests healthy, because insects and other vermin went infect dead branches and then spread into the rest of the tree. In many areas of the world there are now too many people impacting the available trees and it is no longer environmentally sound to harvest dead wood directly from a tree.

Eileen Holland reports a tradition of cutting wands "from one-year-old trees, in a single stroke, at sunrise on a Wednesday." Ask for permission from the tree before cutting a wand. Thank the tree for the gift of the wand. Possibly leave a small token of thanks, such as a pebble, ribbon (natural fibers and colors), or feather.

When picking up sticks for use as a wand, the Witch will pick a natural stick that looks right and feels good when held. A Witch will recognize the right stick because it "feels" right (an inner feeling in your heart).

When picking up sticks for use as a wand, the Witch will pick a natural stick that looks right and feels good when held. A Witch will recognize the right stick because it "feels" right (an inner feeling in your heart).

Various kinds of wood are associated with specific kinds of magick and the Witch will find a wand from the right kind of tree for the magick to be performed.

The most famous of these simple stick wands is the divining rod, used for locating water or lost items. The divining wand will have a fork (two short ends that come together into a longer single length, kind of like a "Y") and is held loosely by the branched end (one branch in each hand). The wand will slightly twitch or vibrate to give the Witches hints on which direction to look.

In high ceremonial magick the wands are very elaborate, typically constructed of metal (or fine wood that has been covered with gold, a process called "gilding") and encrusted with valuable gems. Magick runes or symbols are carved on the length of the wand and typically there is a valuable gemstone at the tip.

Many Witches craft a much less expensive ceremonial wand by wrapping a piece of wood (such as a dowel from the local hardware store) with cloth, leather, twine, and other materials. Magick runes or symbols can be burned or carved into the wood or drawn on cloth or leather strips and wrapped onto the wand. Seashells, feathers, crystals, and other items from nature can be tied or glued to the wand.

With these kinds of homemade wands, the personal expression of the individual Witch is important. Often the choice of items attached to the wand will be based on the Goddess or God the Witch honors (for example, a wand dedicated to Aphrodite might have seashells while a wand dedicated to Diana might have small sterling silver trinkets). The important thing is to trust your heart and create a wand that matches your personality and beliefs.

A wand shouldn't be longer than the length from your elbow to your fingertips.

For some rituals or spells, the wand might have something temporarily attached to it. For example, for a Full Moon ritual, a Witch might write down the goals and desires for the next month on a small piece of paper and then tie or wrap the piece of paper on the wand.

As in most of Witchcraft, it is important to figure out what works for you personally. Something may be great for everyone else but not work for you, while another thing that nobody else does might be perfect for you. Trust your heart.

When you finish choosing or making a wand, you will want to dedicate it to magical work. The ritual should be short and simple: place the tool on the altar, cast a circle, and perform a Short ritual to consecrate the tool. If you belong to a specific Witchcraft tradition, use the ritual specified by your tradition. If you are an eclectic Witch or still undecided on tradition, make up your own short ceremony, possibly based around a poem you write.

If you have a permanent altar, you might leave your wand on your altar for 24 hours after your ceremony before making use of your new wand. Any of the Sabbaths or New Moon or Full Moon are particularly appropriate times to dedicate a new wand.

Correspondences of a wand

Some traditions correspond wands with the element air. Some traditions correspond wands with the element fire. In some traditions, the element is determined by the materials and decorations, including runes and other magick writing.

The wand is considered to be a phallic tool and therefore of masculine element and male energy. The wand corresponds with the planet Mars. Mars is one of the basic Western astrological planets. Mars is personal in sign, house, and aspects. Mars the planet is named for Mars the Roman god. Use the Mars herb to consecrate the wand.

Mars rules physical energy and efforts. It describes the strength and direction of the physical force that drives your ego, fires your emotions, and encourages your mental endeavors and communicative skills. It describes male relationships and associations, risk-taking inclinations, and the physical challenges you are likely to encounter. —Peggy, astro-consulting

It is also good for love spells and rituals involving emotion. It strengthens the third eye, and is a great tool for divination as well.

Willow The Witches Tree

One of my favorite natural plant elements of nature is the Willow. The willow embodies everything feminine and for all descriptive purposes, the willow is the Goddess herself.

The shape of the willow is elegant yet majestic.

The form of the willow is natural yet beautiful.

How the willow moves in the wind embodies elegance.

The willow soothes and calms as a mother.

The willow brings together the elements of earth, water, and air. It is uniform is stabilizing the feminine energies.

Talismans, wands, and rituals tools made of the willow are of the highest magical order. At least one ritual tool should be made of willow to represent the divine nature of the goddess.

The willow is strong in the realms of dreaming and divination. Dream satchels with willow leaves guide the bearer in the realms of the subconscious. Divination tools made from the willow have a stronger connection to the realm of the goddess and lead the bearer in things unseen and unknown.

I believe every pagan should have a "Pagan To Do List". It is a goal sheet of desired accomplishments in the realm of the pagan, much like the Muslim pilgrimages. And one thing that should be on that list is to sleep under a willow tree. You may never go back to a bed again.

The Magic Wand
http://www.worldspirituality.org/magic-wand.html

The Magic Wand. The words savor of everything that the young tyro in Occult art can picture to his mind; of the midnight magician and his mysterious, if not diabolical, arts, muttering his incantations, working his gruesome spells, and raising the restless ghosts of the dead. Strange fancies, these, and yet, so corrupt and ignorant have become the conceptions of the popular mind regarding the once sacred Science of the Temple and the psychological powers of Nature, that we very much question, if the ideas above stated were not very similar to the originals of each modern student, before he had become acquainted with the deeper truths--the realities of Occult philosophy.

We will commence our study by a careful investigation of the original meaning of the words Magic Wand, since those who were the masters and originators thereof, are far more likely to know more about them than their degenerate offspring of a later age. Few, comparatively, would believe that the words MAGIC, MASON, and IMAGINATION, are the present unrelated descendants of the same original conception--THE ROOT IDEA; but such is the case. First, then, we will examine their modern meanings. Magic is the unholy art of working secret spells, of using invisible powers, and holding intercourse with the unseen world of ghosts and demons, by means of enchantments. It also means the expert deception of the senses by the tricks of a conjurer, SO-CALLED hocus-pocus and fraud, and a magician is either an evil-minded, superstitious mortal, fool enough to believe in charms, or an expert pretender and imposter of the first water, who cheats and deceives the people. A mason is the honorable designation of a builder, who works in stone; metaphysically, a member of a semi- secret society, whose sole advantage is social intercourse and standing; who proclaim fraternity and universal brotherhood theoretically and practice the reverse in reality; a man who apes the Egyptian Mason, knows nothing in reality of Hiram, his master; who knows nothing of the starry Solomon or his mystic temple in the heavens, which Hiram built; and who misconceives the import of the three villains, or assassins; and who, further, knows nothing of that wonderful sprig of myrtle:--in short, a Free Mason, speaking generally, is a man who delights in ideals, social equality, secret fraternity, and plays at mysticism; who parades on the Masonic stage and enacts a role he does not understand. The first meaning, that of a builder, is the most correct. Lastly, the imagination is the exercise of mental imagery--the picturings of silent thought.

And now we will proceed BACKWARDS. Imagination is from the word "image," a form, a picture, and has descended to us from the Latin "imago," which, in its turn, was derived from the old Semitic root, "mag." Mason comes to us from the Latin "mass," which means to mould and form, i.e., to build; and the word "mass," through various transformations, was also derived from the root-word "mag." Consequently, originally, there was but little difference in the ancient idea of building pictures in the mind and erecting the mental idea externally in stone. It is from this fact, that, we have to-day Mental Masons, a la the secret orders, and stone masons, who labor for wages. The Mental Masons have merely lost the knowledge of their art. They should, by rights, be as active and correspondingly useful to-day as their more physical brothers, the masons of stone.

This art would never have fallen into disgrace and disuse, if their daily bread, or material accumulations, had depended upon their efforts in building up the mental, moral, and spiritual attainments, of each other, and bringing their knowledge into more external use, by making the material edifice, the physical body, a purer and more fitting temple, for the Divine soul.

Magic comes from the Latin "magi" and the Greek word "magos," which means wise, learned in the mysteries, and was the synonym of wisdom. The initiated philosopher, the priest, and the wise men, are all of them included in the "magi." Again, tracing this word to its remote ancestor, we find it terminating in the same Semitic root, "mag," but of this strange root no one was able to say much, except that it seemed to belong to the Assyrian branch of the great Semitic race. But quite recently, thanks to our scientific explorers and archaeologists, versed in the mysterious meaning of cuneiform inscription; Assyrian scholars now inform us that they have found the hoary, primitive original of it, of magic, magi and imago, etc. It is from an old Akkadian word, "imga," meaning wise, holy, and learned, and was used as the distinguishing title of their wisest sages, priests, and philosophers, who, as may be supposed, gradually formed a peculiar caste, which merged into the ruling priestly order. The Semites, who succeeded the old Akkadian race in the valley of the Euphrates, as a mere matter of verbal convenience, transformed many of the old Akkadian words to suit their own articulation, and "imga" became "mag," and thus "magi." THE BLEND between the Semitic and the older Akkadian race, produced, by fusion of racial blood, the famed Chaldeans. So that we see how old are the words which many of us daily use, but with different meaning. Verily, it makes one feel, when be thinks of magic and its origin, as though he were quite nearly related to the people who honored King Sargon, the Wise, the earthly original of the mystic Solomon of Biblical tradition. The term Wand is an old Saxon word, which primarily signifies to set in motion, to move. From this we derive our word wander, i.e., to roam, and wandering, i.e., moving and continually restless.

We have now the original, therefore real, meaning of the words Magic Wand; thus an object that sets in motion the powers of the magician, and the magician, an Initiate of the sacred rites--A MASTER OF WISDOM, possessing all the resources that enable him TO BUILD mould, and form; to create in fact, by virtue of his knowledge of the secret powers of mental imagery and the potential use of his own imagination. He is both Mental Mason and learned philosopher.

The student may doubtless ask, why all this care and labor regarding mere definitions? We reply that, it is because, the real meaning of the words we have purposely selected for the title of our studies are, in themselves, a far better revelation than we could possibly have written. Originally, ideas and words were related as absolute expressions or correspondences, of each other. This is not so now. As the different races became interblended, the purity of both language and morals retrograded, and the people grew more to the external. The intuitions and spirit were compelled to retreat, giving place to only the intellectual and mental. The blending of the languages gave birth to many words wherein different meanings were transmitted; hence, the trouble arising to-day over the numerous interpretations of a single word.

Hybrid races have no such thing as a pure language. Their ideas and language, like their blood, is badly mixed up, confusing, and unsatisfactory, so far as the real meaning of the words are concerned. For this very reason we find so many different meanings for the same word; and also for this reason, we cannot formulate a legal enactment in the Anglo-Saxon tongue that, a learned lawyer, versed in this senseless jugglery of words, cannot demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the courts, means something the very opposite of the real intentions-- the spirit--which the framers thereof, intended it to convey. Anciently, it required no artful cunning of the lawyer to interpret the laws. The words had only one simple and obvious meaning. If a language could be so constructed to- ay, and the antiquated precedents of the courts annihilated; the legal profession would be exterminated inside of twelve months, and an affliction removed from the people.

The philosophy of the Magic Wand is this. It is a magnetic, electric conductor for the magician's will. It directs the flow of his thought and concentrates it upon a given point in space or an object. It is, magically, what the sights of a rifle are to a sportsman. It enables him to focus his powers with exact precision upon the mark against which, or upon which, his will is directed. Apart from this there is no power, per se, in the Wand itself, any more than there is in a lightning conductor without the electric storm. Ergo, the Wand is the conductor, in the magician's hand, for the lightning of the soul; and just as the lightning rod is most useful and most powerful to protect, when the storm is the strongest; so is the Wand most powerful in the hands of the most potential magician. We can only transmit through this Wand the degree of force we may happen to possess in the soul.

In a properly prepared Wand lies the most powerful weapon, to protect or destroy, that can be placed within a magician's hands. With his own spiritual force and knowledge, combined with the magic power attached to the instrument, nothing can withstand its power, when directed with a determined and powerful will.

Many substances have been employed in the manufacture of these Magic Wands. Metals or stones will not serve this purpose, unless covered with some organic matter. In any case stones are worthless. The very finest Wands are made from the live ivory of a female elephant. A short Wand, twenty-one inches long, tipped with gold at the largest end and silver or copper at the other, is very powerful. Next to these costly articles are Wands with a gold or copper core, a wire, in fact, cased with ebony, boxwood, rosewood, cedar or sandalwood. English yew also serves the purpose; so does almond wood. Simpler, less expensive, and almost as effective, are Wands made of witch-hazel. In fact, apart from the Wands of live ivory, I consider that witch-hazel is as powerful as the golden Wand. Next in force to this witch-hazel are the shoots of the almond tree, and, lastly, the peach and swamp willow.

The proper time to manufacture a Magic Wand is whenever you can find the person who is able to do the work. But after it is constructed it must be thoroughly magnetized, with proper ceremony and aspiration, the first or the second full Moon after the Sun enters Capricorn, at midnight, when the Moon will be culminating in her own sign upon the mid-heaven.

The best time TO CUT a shoot of witch-hazel or other material for a Wand is the first full Moon after the Sun's entry into Capricorn, at midnight, and then magnetize it upon the next full Moon at the same hour.

In conclusion, let us repeat that, the Magic Wand is but the highly sensitive magical medium for transmitting and concentrating the force of the learned magician; that it is equally powerful under great excitement of mind, WHETHER USED CONSCIOUSLY OR NOT. The stream of mental fire will go in the direction the Wand happens to be pointed, and, therefore, should never be in the hands of the wicked or foolish, any more than firearms. It is potential or otherwise, in exact proportion to the artist's wisdom and dynamic mentality, and is useless in the hands of the idiotic or weak-minded. A Magic Wand requires brains and vigorous mental force to make it effective, just as the steam engine requires an apparatus for generating the steam, that moves it. With a determined will, and a mental conception of one's inward power, any man or woman can, by means of this sensitive Wand, defy all the legionaries of Hell, and quickly disperse every form of spiritual iniquity.

The firearms which have become so intricate in their mechanism and so destructive in their operations, are only a degeneration of the Magic Wand. The first weapons of warfare and slaughter were very crude and clumsy, then larger and more destructive, until at last they have become as fine in texture and mechanical genius, compared with their early brothers, as the Magic Wand is to-day, above and beyond, the present weapons of warfare. At last, the original mode of defense will be rediscovered and become a utility in the hands of the majority of mankind. At the same time, the mental and moral nature will be evolving into better conditions, too, so that their use will not be given to the ignorant and evildoers, but placed in charge of the educated, those who are morally capable of leading and ruling.

Yes, we are now stepping upon the plane of reason and intuition, where right, not might, will prevail and rule the world. The present mode of government and rule will be changed, and one of humanitarian justice takes its place.

Making Wands

Making Wands
Source Unknown

One neat way to make a wand that is very popular is to get a piece of copper tubing and a crystal that fits in the end of it or even one for both ends of it. Then you can decorate the tube in various ways. Some people solder small chips of gemstones on it, while others wrap it in black leather (crazy glue keeps this on the pipe!) and then braid various colors of embroidery thread about this or attach feathers to it or whatever. You can fill the tubes
with herbs sacred to your purpose/goal in life too.

Some folks have more than one of these wands for various purposes in their lives.

You can solder the crystal/s in the end/s or you can fashion prongs out of the end of the tubing and stick it in much the same way a jeweler sets a diamond in a ring. Again, if you do this, you may find a touch of crazy glue keeps it in better.

Of course a wand doesn't have to be this complicated. Another nice wand is the ceremonial Magick - type "lotus wand" that some witches have adopted as their own. Take a branch from a tree that is fairly straight and the right length for a wand. Preferably
this should be one you find, but it can also be taken from a living tree if you psychically "ask the tree's permission" - if you get a strong feeling this is wrong and that you shouldn't cut that tree, don't do it. This should be done on the Waxing Moon. All ritual tools you make should be made and/or consecrated only on the Waxing moon. The waxing moon is the time from one day after the new moon up to and
including the night of the full - moon.

Either way, leave an offering of thanks afterwards. If you are into the Native American traditions, an ounce or so of tobacco (Pure – the kind used in the sacred pipe) or cornmeal is appropriate. If you are in Wicca / Neo Paganism, a libation of apple juice is
most fitting – as is some home-baked cakes (unfrosted plain cupcakes, some corn muffins, oatmeal or cornmeal cookies or cornbread, a loaf of home-made or all-natural whole wheat bread, etc - natural stuff, please no Twinkies and junk food) or even a few small charged crystals can be implanted in the ground for the trees growth. In Santeria it was traditional when taking anything from nature to leave a specific number
of copper coins, perhaps with specific foods, depending upon the Deities/Orishas or other entities being invoked according to a very strict tradition of what Beings ruled what places. (For example, 5 is the number of a river or fresh water, 7 is the number for the ocean, 4 or 6 for a mountain, 2 for the forest, etc.)

Then you strip the bark, sand it down, mark it in 7 segments and paint them each in these colors of the rainbow from top to bottom. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet.

Some Celtic traditions put a steel rod through the middle of any wooden wand - a tricky business, but effective to make it a channel of the energy. To do this you MUST be sure your branch is of a certain thickness or it will split as you try to do this. This channels the energy in a similar way to the copper tubing in the crystal wand. They also wrap a coil of thick steel wire around it's handle, like a snake, for 4-5 times which makes a grip and is also said to contribute to the energy flow.

Another way to paint a wooden wand is half black and half white or half gold and half silver, to express the balance of the polarities. If you are into Kabbalah, some folks also use Red and Blue as these are the colors usually associated with Chesed and Geburah in magick which are the central spheres on the masculine and feminine pillars of the tree of life, respectively.

And some people leave the wooden rod plain, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to come through.

Also, some people make their wands out of a wooden dowel rod bought at a local lumber supply house.

I do, however, suggest that if at all possible, you still go into nature and make a small offering to mother earth for the materials used. Even a purchased dowel or a crystal bought from a rock shop or a copper tubes are all gifts from Mother Earth and Father Sky and it is important to show our gratitude for what they have given us.

Ultimately, you should make the wand be what you feel. A simple stick wrapped with embroidery thread that has some feathers tied to the ends of the thread works well.

Making Your First Wand

Making Your First Wand
Source Unknown

Some feel the tools of magick must be made by some
powerful person with moreknowledge than yourself. This
just isn't true. Making your own wand is the
mostpowerful thing you can do. making your own tools
invests then with yourpersonal power and therefore
will work better for you as from its' conceptionit is
imbued with your vibrations, your energy, it is a part
of you - afamiliar, if you will.
Choose a length of wood - I use tree branches that
must be pruned anyway. Ilike a 12 inch length about
the thickness of my finger. When selecting the woodI
refer to the magickal vibrations of the different
woods. I use apple for lovemagick, seven barks for
money magick, Elder for fairie magick, oak for
naturemagick, willow for general magick.
You will want a quartz crystal point for the tip - you
could use rose quartzon the love wand or amethyst on a
wand for spiritual contact and guidance.
Gouge a bit of wood out of the tip of the wand to help
hold the crystal - gluewith high temp hot glue gun or
a strong hold glue - let set.
Now use glue on bottom sides of crystal and top ionch
or so of wood, wrap withleather strips or cord or
embroidery thread in a color that goes with thepurpose
of the wand. That helps to secure the crystal. Now
wrap the base end ofthe wand by gluing wood and
wrapping with leather or yarn to make a hand hold.Use
the same color as on top and cover about 4 inches.
You may decorate the shaft of the wand with symbols
that relate to the purposeof the wand, such as runes
and other symbols that have meaning for you. You
canuse a knife, water proof marker, paint, woodburning
tool, etc.
You could decorate the end of the top yarn with
gemstone beads, metalbeads, wood beads and tip it with
feathers if you like. Cleanse and consecrate as
withany tool.

Magick Of Wands

Magick Of Wands

Symbolism

In the mundane, there was a time only officials would carry a wand of office or staff of office representing their power. Compare in this context the function of the ceremonial mace, the scepter, and the staff of office. This is a practice of long standing; in Ancient Egypt, priests were depicted with rods. Its age may be even greater, as Stone Age cave paintings show figures holding sticks, which may be symbolic representations of their power.

Religious Usage

In Egypt, toilette articles, weapons against possible enemies, amulets against serpents, were also left in the tomb, together with magick texts and a magick wand which enabled the ka (soul) to use them. The rod of Moses was a hazel wand. In catacomb frescoes of the third and fourth centuries. In classical Greco-Roman mythology, the god Hermes/Mercury has a special wand called a caduceus.

In Ceremonial magick, practitioners use several magical tools including wands for the channeling of energy—they serve a similar purpose to the athame although the two have their distinct uses.

While an athame is generally used to command, a wand is seen as more gentle and is used to invite or encourage.

Though traditionally made of wood, they can also consist of any material except plastic or manmade resins.

Practitioners usually prune a branch from an Oak, Hazel, or other tree, or may even buy wood from a hardware store, and then carve it and add decorations to personalize it; however, one can also purchase ready-made wands.

In magick the wand can represents the element fire, the male energy as a phallic symbol and even air.

There is some scholarly opinion that the magick wand may have its roots in the drumstick of a shaman, especially in Central Asia and Siberia, as when using it to bang on his drum or point, to perform religious, healing, and magical ceremonies.

Magic Wand

Magic Wand
Several Sources

Often called a "blasting rod," this was an important tool for several types of magic. You will notice that it was customary to have two!

The Staff and The Rod
From Eliphas Levi

The staff should be of cane and the wand or rod of hazel, both virgin [(meaning, in this case, having no branches or offshoots)]. The must be cut and trimmed on the day and in the hour of the Sun. On the day and in the hour of Mercury, the following figures must be inscribed upon the staff. [See picture.]Let the following words be recited when the staff is finished: "O ADONAY most Holy and most powerful, vouchsafe to consecrate and bless this Staff and this Rod, so that they may possess the required virtue, O most HOLY ADONAY, to whom be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen." Anoint and fumigate the wood, and store it in silken cloth.

Of the... Instruments of Magical Art
From The Key of Solomon

The Staff should be of elder wood, or cane, or rosewood; and the Wand of hazel or nut tree, in all cases the wood being virgin, that is of one year's growth only. They should each be cut from the tree at a single stroke, on the day of Mercury, at sunrise. The characters shown should be written or engraved thereon in the day and hour of Mercury. This being done, thou shalt say: "ADONAI, Most Holy, deign to bless and to consecrate this Wand, and this Staff, that they may obtain the necessary virtue, through Thee, O Most Holy ADONAI, whose kingdom endureth unto the Ages of the Ages. Amen." After having perfumed and consecrated them, put them aside in a pure and clean place for use when required.

Of the Virgin Parchment
From The Grimorium Verum

You make the baton of the Art from Hazel wood that has never borne fruit, and cut it with a single stroke on the day and in the hour of Mercury, at the Crescent Moon. And you engrave it with the needle, the pen or the lancet, in the following characters. The seal and character of Frimost is to be inscribed on the first Rod.

Then you make another baton of Hazel wood, which has never borne fruit, and which is without seed, and cut it in the day and hour of the Sun, and on this you engrave these characters. The seal and character of Klippoth is to be inscribed on the second Rod.

This having been done, you say over your baton the following: "Most wise, most powerful Adonay, deign to bless, sanctify and conserve this baton so that it may have the necessary virtue, O most holy Adonay, to whom be honor and glory for all time. Amen."

Air Wand

Air Wand
By Matrika

There is some controversy in both Ceremonial Magick and Wicca as to whether the Wand relates to the direction of the East or the South and whether it relates to fire or air as an element. I am going to share here what I use and what works for me. Others who work differently are more than welcome to share their usage.

The way I use the wand in my Magickal working is as the tool for the East the element of air. I can't personally see the fire attribute, as I have problems with the idea of a tool relating to an element that can destroy it. Since some wands are made of wood and almost all of them were until the popularization of Crystal work with the adoption by some NeoPagans of Native American practises made the metal wand with a Crystal in it the latest thing. If I were to work with people who used the wand as fire, I would certainly used a metalic and stone wand of this type and not a wooden one. Again, this is personal taste.

The air element relates to communication, intellectual ideas, Linear Logic, Clear and intelligent thinking, and telepathy. It relates to the concept of unity too, in that all of us - and all species of life – breathe the same atmosphere. (note - I realize the plants use the Carbon Dioxide while we use the air, which is why I said atmosphere)

The wand relates to the suit of rods in Tarot and vice versa.

The Wand is a male tool, like the Athame. The female tools are the Chalice and the Pentacle.

The wand is used to summon the Rulers of the 4 directions and to invoke the Deities in casting a circle. In certain types of Magick it is sometimes also used to cast the circle, but it is more common to use the athame for this. (or the sword if it is a coven and they have one)

The Wand can also be used when invoking the spirits.

It is particularly helpful at times when wisdom is needed and in invoking the spirits before trance working where specific information or guidance is desired. It is also good for doing this for very important divinations when they are done in a fully cast circle.

The wand is used in some traditions in a Spring Equinox celebration to create a hole in the soil in which seeds, symbolizing people's hopes, are planted - obvious fertility symbolism.

The wand can hold a lot of power and be a very special and personal instrument.

There are some Witches/Pagans I know who use only the wand and the chalice as their tools. Their thoughts on this being that the Pentacle is drawn from ceremonial Magick - which is correct - so they want to eliminate it as they feel it is necessary fore them to get back to the roots of Wicca/Paganism. These people also eliminated the knife/sword because they pointed out that in ancient times Wicca was the religion of the Masses and the Peasants - who were not allowed to carry weapons. These people use the wand to cast all their circles, replacing it for all the purposes for which the athame is used.

Their are other groups, most noticeably the Community of Isis and it's inner circle the temple of Isis in Salem MA., that use the wand for casting the circle although they retain the athame - which they seem to use only for blessing the chalice in the symbolic re-enactment of the fertility theme central to Wicca. (Please note I said symbolic).

These are the major uses of the wand.

For the entire show this week, I have a returning favorite, *Marguerite
Rigoglioso *- author of *Virgin Mother Goddesses of Antiquity *and our
show topic is*When God Was a Virgin Mother...and the Eleusinian
Mysteries Illuminated*. Very interesting stuff including discussion of
an older Athena - the one that wasn't birthed from Zeus' head. And in

Hades and much more. And more....Marguerite is also the author of *The
Cult of Divine Birth in Ancient Greece* and time permitting we'll see
how these books overlap!

Did you miss these past shows? You can access them in the archives -

Last Wednesday....

*Bob Walter*, Executive Director of the *Joseph Campbell Foundation*
discussed what it means to be a "mythic activist", the importance of
Joseph Campbell's work in the world, the hero/heroine's journey, and how
rational thought, and the I versus WE mentality, replaced Goddess. I
also plan to ask Bob: What happens when myths become not metaphors but
fact (aka religion) and how it contributes to the agony of the world.
When one understands the psychology of myth and it's role in religion
where does that leave most people on the subject of God/ess? The
Atheist? Can we reconcile believing in God/ess with understanding myth
and how can we reconcile myth with your own spirituality/religion?

_*March 2*_ - ***Pam Wells*, author and artist of the beautiful and deep

Humanity, Sacred Economics* will discuss our topic, A Revolution in
Human Beingness. And if that sounds a bit too vague or broad, I'm going
to ask Charles about his ideas for a new paradigm for humanity; circle
giving, being in co-creative partnership with earth, distinguishing
between the feminine/masculine Yin and Yang and how our state of
starvation for connection has resulted in our addiction to food, drugs,
shopping, sex, tv, electronics. Charles has been called one of the most
optimistic people around about nature and humanity. Hear his insights
and recommendations.
_*
*_*/Allan G. Johnson/*, author and speaker will discuss *class, gender
and privilege* and his fiction book on *domestic violence* titled The
First Thing and the Last. Hear how racism, patriarchy, economics, and
capitalism all work with white and male privilege and hear his views on
Christian privilege that seems so pervasive. Listen as he talks about
the dilemmas of manhood and fatherhood and how we can overcome these
obstacles of class, gender and privilege.

Time: 6PM Pacific/9PM Eastern. You'll have to make adjustments for
your time zone. And the show is available later from the archives where
