Martha,
I clearly said the intent of the ritual. To reflect back "what they
send out" - that's all.
You're seeing something there that was not at all part of the original
intention.

Hare Magick And Divination

Hare Magick And Divination
Source: Ostara by Edain McCoy

Observe hares and rabbits in the wild and attempt to ascertain from their movements answers to questions you're pondering. To begin, assume that movements to the right are positive answers, and movements to the left are negative. Jerky or uncertain movements can mean the answer is unclear at this time. The more swift or sudden a movement, the more emphatic the response.

Pet the foot of a hare or rabbit for good luck – this means one still attached to a living creature, not a severed foot and certainly not one commercially manufactured and dyed by a novelty company.

If your personal ethics are not opposed to wearing animal fur and you already own rabbit fur clothing, you can magickally charge your rabbit fur sweater or jacket into a talisman of protection. Do this by holding garment against your solar plexus area (just above the navel) and projecting into it the energy of protection. Visualize the garment glowing with an electric white light that will envelop you in an egg of protective energy when worn.

Use fur from a rabbit or hare to assist in all divinations. They can be most effective when tied to the base of a pendulum. When held still, the subtle turnings of the pendulum hint at answers to questions asked. Suspend the pendulum and watch its movement. In general, clockwise and up-and-down motions indicate positive responses, while counterclockwise and side-to-side motions indicate negative responses.

Rabbit hairs can be added to potions for invisibility – or astral projection – and secrecy to enhance their effects.

Cactus plants or the herb lady's slipper in a garden will help keep out marauding hares.

Rabbits and hares will bring the blessings of the Goddess to land on which they live. If you don't mind sharing your garden with them, know that they tend to build warrens on land that offers hilly areas and deep tree roots for burrowing. They also like to forage in nonchemically treated lawns with lots of growth that most homeowners want eradicated. If you have a warren, be sure to leave feed for the rabbits to keep them from foraging elsewhere.

Call upon the spirit of the rabbit during meditation to allow it to share its totem energy with you. Rabbit energy is quick, tricky, good for helping you change course, good for helping you escape bad situations quickly, good for helping you slip into the underworld and good for helping you with invisibility spells and astral projection efforts.

History Of Ostara - The Spring Equinox

History Of Ostara - The Spring Equinox
By Patti Wigington, About.com

Many Holidays, Many Names:

The word Ostara is just one of the names applied to the celebration of the spring equinox on March 21. The Venerable Bede said the origin of the word is actually from Eostre, a Germanic goddess of spring. Of course, it's also the same time as the Christian Easter celebration, and in the Jewish faith, Passover takes place as well. For early Pagans in the Germanic countries, this was a time to celebrate planting and the new crop season. Typically, the Celtic peoples did not celebrate Ostara as a holiday, although they were in tune with the changing of the seasons.

A New Day Begins:

A dynasty of Persian kings known as the Achaemenians celebrated the spring equinox with the festival of No Ruz -- which means "new day." It is a celebration of hope and renewal still observed today in many Persian countries, and has its roots in Zoroastrianism. In Iran, a festival called Chahar-Shanbeh Suri takes place right before No Ruz begins, and people purify their homes and leap over fires to welcome the 13-day celebration of No Ruz.

Mad as a March Hare:

Spring equinox is a time for fertility and sowing seeds, and so nature's fertility goes a little crazy. In medieval societies in Europe, the March hare was viewed as a major fertility symbol -- this is a species of rabbit that is nocturnal most of the year, but in March when mating season begins, there are bunnies everywhere all day long. The female of the species is superfecund and can conceive a second litter while still pregnant with a first. As if that wasn't enough, the males tend to get frustrated when rebuffed by their mates, and bounce around erratically when discouraged.

The Legends of Mithras:

The story of the Roman god, Mithras, is similar to the tale of Jesus Christ and his resurrection. Born at the winter solstice and resurrected in the spring, Mithras helped his followers ascend to the realm of light after death. In one legend, Mithras, who was popular amongst members of the Roman military, was ordered by the Sun to sacrifice a white bull. He reluctantly obeyed, but at the moment when his knife entered the creature's body, a miracle took place. The bull turned into the moon, and Mithras' cloak became the night sky. Where the bull's blood fell flowers grew, and stalks of grain sprouted from its tail.

Spring Celebrations Around the World:

In ancient Rome, the followers of Cybele believed that their goddess had a consort who was born via a virgin birth. His name was Attis, and he died and was resurrected each year during the time of the vernal equinox on the Julian Calendar (between March 22 and March 25). Around the same time, the Germanic tribes honored a lunar goddess known as Ostara, who mated with a fertility god around this time of year, and then gave birth nine months later – at Yule.

The indigenous Mayan people in Central American have celebrated a spring equinox festival for ten centuries. As the sun sets on the day of the equinox on the great ceremonial pyramid, El Castillo, Mexico, its "western face...is bathed in the late afternoon sunlight. The lengthening shadows appear to run from the top of the pyramid's northern staircase to the bottom, giving the illusion of a diamond-backed snake in descent." This has been called "The Return of the Sun Serpent" since ancient times.

According to the Venerable Bede, Eostre was the Saxon version of the Germanic goddess Ostara. Her feast day was held on the full moon following the vernal equinox -- almost the identical calculation as for the Christian Easter in the west. One delightful legend associated with Eostre was that she found an injured bird on the ground one winter. To save its life, she transformed it into a hare. But "the transformation was not a complete one. The bird took the appearance of a hare but retained the ability to lay eggs...the hare would decorate these eggs and leave them as gifts to Eostre."

Modern Celebrations

This is a good time of year to start your seedlings. If you grow an herb garden, start getting the soil ready for late spring plantings. Celebrate the balance of light and dark as the sun begins to tip the scales, and the return of new growth is near.

Many modern Wiccans and Pagans celebrate Ostara as a time of renewal and rebirth. Take some time to celebrate the new life that surrounds you in nature -- walk in park, lay in the grass, hike through a forest. As you do so, observe all the new things beginning around you -- plants, flowers, insects, birds. Meditate upon the ever-moving Wheel of the Year, and celebrate the change of seasons.

How To Hold A Rebirthing Ritual For Ostara

Posted by: "Silver Fox" silverfox_57@hotmail.com   trickster9993

How To Hold A Rebirthing Ritual For Ostara
By Patti Wigington, About.com

Spring is the time of year when the cycle of life, death, and rebirth is complete. As plants bloom and new life returns, the theme of resurrection is ever present. As Ostara, the spring equinox, arrives, it's the season for that which has gone dormant to become revitalized, alive, and reborn. This ritual includes a symbolic rebirthing -- you can perform this rite either as a solitary, or as a part of a group ceremony.

What You Need:

A bowl of earth
Incense
A white candle
Water
A black sheet for each participant

In addition to setting up your Ostara altar, you'll need the following supplies: a black sheet for each participant, a bowl of dirt, water, a white candle, and incense. For this rite, the High Priestess (HPs) or High Priest (HP) should be the only person at the altar. Other participants should wait in another room until called. If you're doing the rite outside, the group can wait some distance away from the altar. If your tradition calls for you to cast a circle, do this now.

The first person in the group waits outside the circle, covered from head to toe in the black sheet. If your group is comfortable with skyclad rituals, you can be nude under the sheet -- otherwise, wear your ritual robe. Once the HPs is ready to begin, she calls the first participant into the altar area, cutting an opening in the circle as the person enters and then closing it behind them.

The participant, still covered in the black sheet, kneels on the floor before the altar.

The HPs greets the participant, and says:

Today is the time of the Spring equinox.
Ostara is a time of equal parts light and dark.
Spring has arrived, and it is a time of rebirth.
The planting season will soon begin, and
life will form once more within the earth.
As the earth welcomes new life and new beginnings,
so can we be reborn in the light and love of the gods*.
Do you, (name), wish to experience the rebirth of spring, and
step out of the darkness into the light?

The participant replies with an affirmative answer. The HPs takes the salt from the altar, and sprinkles it over the sheet-clad participant, saying:

With the blessings of the earth, and the life within the soil,
you are reborn in the eyes of the gods.

Next, the HPs takes the lit incense and passes it over the participant, saying:

With the blessings of air, may knowledge and wisdom
be brought to you upon the winds.

The HPs takes the burning candle and (carefully!) passes it over the participant, saying:

May the fire of the spring sun bring growth and harmony
into your life.

Finally, the HPs sprinkles water around the participant, and says:

With the blessings of water, may the chill and darkness of winter,
be swept away by the warm spring rains.

Rise! Step forth out of the darkness, and climb into the light.
Awaken once more in the arms of the gods.

At this point, the participant slowly emerges from the black sheet. Remember, this is a symbolic rebirth. Take your time if you feel you need to. As you pull the sheet back away from you, remember that you are not only stepping into the light, but putting behind you the darkness of the past six months. Winter is over, and spring has arrived, so take a few moments, as you emerge, to think about the magic of this time of year.

The High Priestess then welcomes the participant, saying:

You have stepped once more into the light,
and the gods welcome you.

Repeat the ceremony until all members of the group have been "reborn". If you are performing this rite as a solitary, obviously you would speak the lines of the HPs yourself, and bless the area around yourself with the dirt, incense, candle and water. Once everyone in the group has gone through the rebirthing, take some time to meditate on the balancing energy of Ostara. Light and dark are equal, as are positive and negative. Consider, for a while, the polarity of this season. Think about the balance you wish to find in your life, and consider how you may work harder to find harmony within yourself.

When you are ready, end the ritual, or move on to a Cakes and Ale ceremony or other healing magic**.

Tips:

* Feel free to substitute the name of your tradition's deity here.
** If you've ever thought about rededicating yourself to the gods of your tradition, Ostara is an excellent time to do this.

How To Be A Spring Goddess

Posted by: "Silver Fox" silverfox_57@hotmail.com   trickster9993

How To Be A Spring Goddess
By Anita Revel

Spring is a time to stretch, yawn, awaken, reach upward, outward, flex and gravitate to the light. Good-bye barren winter and welcome to that new confidence in the air and a landscape sparkling with nature's jewelry.

All creatures test new fur, feathers, scales, teeth, claws, skateboards and tennis racquets and head towards the revitalizing light of Spring. Primal urges to reproduce kick in, as do prevailing urges to clean the nest. Abundant and fresh fruit appears in supermarkets, and the riotous colors of light and flowers make us heady with happiness.

As the Spring Equinox flits past on 20-23 September, get giddy with Spring fever in the lead up to the luscious, lusty energy of Beltane on 31 October. During these days, and for all the other days in between, enjoy the refreshing energy of the goddesses of Spring.

Maia

Maia is the Greek goddess of Spring, from whom we derive the name of the month of May. Her traditional day of celebration is on 1 May (31 October in the southern hemisphere), when joyous men and women, wearing vibrant green, dance around a may-pole to welcome spring. In the Celtic tradition of Beltane, it was mostly a time of unashamed human sexuality and fertility celebrating the onset of spring and new growth.

Do this: On the next clear night, take the time to star gaze - Maia is the brightest star in the Pleiades (or the 'seven sisters') constellation, located between the hunter Orion and Taurus the Bull. Reflect on elements of your life that you think need Maia's influence of renewal, and carry a green gemstone to strengthen your intentions through this week.

Flora

Romans celebrated goddess Flora's energy in spring by gathering boughs and blossoms to adorn temples, statues, or sweethearts' homes. Her festival also coincides with Beltane, where customs such as archery tournaments, dances, feasting and music were conducted to celebrate the coming of Spring. Exhilarated with renewed energy, aflame with passion, her followers consummate with vitality and delight. It's time you did too!

Do this: If you don't have a partner or lover, strive for a deep reconnection with a waning friendship. Provide ongoing protection of the relationship by braiding three ribbons (one each pink, purple and lavender) around the stem of your favorite flower.

Persephone

Persephone was the innocent girl that was kidnapped to the underworld by Hades (yes, but was it really kidnap? Well, maybe, at first). In facing adversity and darkness she found her true personal power, and even began to enjoy wallowing in the Underworld. Naturally, this sent her mother, Demeter, mad with worry - her despair was so great the sun hid and crops failed. When Persephone re-emerged to the light, the earth blossomed in vibrant celebration.

Do this: Carry an orange colored stone (such as brown jasper) with you to help you face adversity. See you on the bright side!

Eostre

Eostre was the Anglo-Saxon goddess of the dawn, from whom 'East' (where the sun rises) and 'Easter' got their names. As goddess of fertility and new beginnings, take this opportunity to embrace Eostre's passion for new life. Now is the time to steer your own life in the new direction you have wanted for so long. Plant the seeds of new ideas, new jobs, new goals.

Do this: Plant seeds of new ideas symbolically with seedlings in a garden or window box. By spring, when your idea manifests itself in the form of luscious flowers, celebrate by frolicking in your garden (naked if you have privacy!)

Ix Chel

Mayan moon goddess Ix Chel, (pronounced e'shell and sometimes called 'Lady Rainbow'), is the mystery and joy of our female sexuality, mother of earth and all life, patroness of the healing arts, weaving, childbirth, and destiny. She wears a serpent on her head representing her transformation from the winter to spring energy - shedding her winter skin in order to blossom anew into spring to a new and fresh stage in the life cycle. As fertility goddess, her power waxes and wanes with the phases of the moon, mirroring the fertility cycle in the bodies of women. Now is the time to celebrate life and love.

Do this: Renew and affirm your sensuality, kindle the fire of romance. Make love by the light of a bon fire, the glow of red candles, or just the full moon's radiance. Dance with your love in bare feet connecting to the earth. Make a list of three things that you are going to create or manifest between now and the next full moon. Make the items on your list be the trigger to a new start for the new phase in this life cycle.
