Could this be the biggest find since the Dead Sea Scrolls? Seventy metal
books found in cave in Jordan could change our view of Biblical history

By Fiona Macrae
Last updated at 8:36 PM on 30th March 2011
For scholars of faith and history, it is a treasure trove too precious for
price.
This ancient collection of 70 tiny books, their lead pages bound with wire,
could unlock some of the secrets of the earliest days of Christianity.
Academics are divided as to their authenticity but say that if verified,
they could prove as pivotal as the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947

Lines of inquiry: The metal tablets could change our understanding of the
Bible
On pages not much bigger than a credit card, are images, symbols and words
that appear to refer to the Messiah and, possibly even, to the Crucifixion
and Resurrection.
Adding to the intrigue, many of the books are sealed, prompting academics to
speculate they are actually the lost collection of codices mentioned in the
Bible's Book Of Revelation.

The books were discovered five years ago in a cave in a remote part of
Jordan to which Christian refugees are known to have fled after the fall of
Jerusalem in 70AD. Important documents from the same period have previously
been found there.
Initial metallurgical tests indicate that some of the books could date from
the first century AD.

Revelation: Experts speculate that the tablets could be the lost collection
of codices referred to in the Bible's Book Of Revelation

Hidden meaning: Scrolls, tablets and other artifacts, including an incense
bowl, were also found at the same site as the tablets
SHEPHERD'S DISCOVERY THAT UNEARTHED A TREASURE TROVE

The Dead Sea Scrolls, counted among the most important archaeological finds
of the modern era, were discovered in a cave (pictured) by a Bedouin
shepherd in the West Bank.

The scrolls consist of 30,000 separate fragments making up 900 manuscripts
of biblical texts and religious writings from the time of Jesus.

The fragile parchment and papyrus fragments have been the subject of intense
study for more than half a century by an international team of scholars who
are still trying to understand the significance of some 30 per cent of the
texts which are not included in the Bible or any other previously known
religious writings.

The scrolls include the earliest known copy of the Ten Commandments, an
almost complete Book of Isaiah and many of the Psalms.

Some of the texts were damaged by well-intentioned restoration attempts
since the 1950s that included the use of Sellotape, rice paper and perspex
glue.

This estimate is based on the form of corrosion which has taken place, which
experts believe would be impossible to achieve artificially.
If the dating is verified, the books would be among the earliest Christian
documents, predating the writings of St Paul.
The prospect that they could contain contemporary accounts of the final
years of Jesus's life has excited scholars – although their enthusiasm is
tempered by the fact that experts have previously been fooled by
sophisticated fakes.
David Elkington, a British scholar of ancient religious history and
archeology, and one of the few to have examined the books, says they could
be 'the major discovery of Christian history'.
'It is a breathtaking thought that we have held these objects that might
have been held by the early saints of the Church,' he said.
But the mysteries between their ancient pages are not the books' only riddle
Today, their whereabouts are also something of a mystery. After their
discovery by a Jordanian Bedouin, the hoard was subsequently acquired by an
Israeli Bedouin, who is said to have illegally smuggled them across the
border into Israel, where they remain.
However, the Jordanian Government is now working at the highest levels to
repatriate and safeguard the collection. Philip Davies, emeritus professor
of biblical studies at Sheffield University, said there was powerful
evidence that the books have a Christian origin in plates cast into a
picture map of the holy city of Jerusalem.

A 16th century painting depicting Jesus's death. The metal books contain
pages with images, symbols and words that appear to refer to the Messiah and
possibly even, to the Crucifixion

X marks the spot: The cave in Jordan where the artifacts were discovered

Dr Margaret Barker, a former president of the Society for Old Testament
Study, confirmed that a sealed book is mentioned in the Bible
'As soon as I saw that, I was dumbstruck,' he said. 'That struck me as so
obviously a Christian image. There is a cross in the foreground, and behind
it is what has to be the tomb [of Jesus], a small building with an opening,
and behind that the walls of the city.

'There are walls depicted on other pages of these books too and they almost
certainly refer to Jerusalem. It is a Christian crucifixion taking place
outside the city walls.'
The British team leading the work on the discovery fears that the present
Israeli 'keeper' may be looking to sell some of the books on to the black
market, or worse – destroy them.
But the man who holds the books denies the charge and claims they have been
in his family for 100 years.
Dr Margaret Barker, a former president of the Society for Old Testament
Study, said: 'The Book of Revelation tells of a sealed book that was opened
only by the Messiah.
'Other texts from the period tell of sealed books of wisdom and of a secret
tradition passed on by Jesus to his closest disciples. That is the context
for this discovery.'

Groundbreaking find: A section of the Dead Sea Scrolls, which were unearthed
in 1947
Professor Davies said: 'The possibility of a Hebrew-Christian origin is
certainly suggested by the imagery and, if so, these codices are likely to
bring dramatic new light to our understanding of a very significant but so
far little understood period of history.'
Mr Elkington, who is leading British efforts to have the books returned to
Jordan, said: 'It is vital that the collection can be recovered intact and
secured in the best possible circumstances, both for the benefit of its
owners and for a potentially fascinated international audience.'
*British scientists have uncovered up to eight million mummified dogs,
thought to have been sacrificed to Anubis, the god of the dead, 2500 years
ago after excavating tunnels in the ancient Eygptian city of Saqqara.

Hi Lizzie

Yes the meetup is still taking place. We just had one this Sunday past and had a great discussion about the books we read and what we did for our last full moon ritual (with that super moon).

I look forward to more in the future as we all get together and talk about how we embody our beliefs.

There are many dark/new moon groups in the hills and I have no doubts of many more in the city - groups of women sometimes strangers, getting together to share their lives, wisdom, sorrows, homes and hospitality free from a world where everything including femininity spirituality and sexuality has a dollar value. It is so important to have that space.

Good luck with it all.

Where to start? OK the Sex Party.. Yep all for them, the more the better! Oh hang on we are talking about the political party are we? Like yourself Tim I have not yet had a chance to look into their policies etc. Superficially though it seems a bit like the Marijuana Party, possibly having some sort of political aspirations.. maybe holding the balance of power in a close political divide between he major parties? Who knows? But with that name they sure as Hell aint going to win a majority in any election.

Now.. to the point... Yes I do get there eventually. If the Sex Party is against the erosion of personal freedom ( And in my ignorance I cannot state that they are), then I sure do support that policy...BUT here lies the rub. We need to be very careful of the notion of "My enemy's enemy is therefore my friend".That is a minefield that has seen many a worthy organization blown to buggery.

As for Father Phooie taking down the Sex Party's poster. A deplorable action surely, and one that must surely have legal repercussions for the Good Father. I do recall that removing or defacing political posters at election time is unlawful.

Enough from the peanut gallery, I'll return to my large can of Red Bull to prepare me to sally forth and do business with the world at large...Bill

Hi Hania,

What I do know for a fact is that the City of Sydney attempted to invent a law when Pope Benedict XVI visited recently, to make it a crime for people to wear anti-Catholic t-shirts or otherwise visibly display any sort of anti-Catholic statement within the CBD.

I doubt that they weren't asked/pressured to do so by the Catholic Church (along with paying millions to stage the whole charade).

Let's also remember that Rome is the original birthplace of the term "Fascism". Sure, it arose under Pagan emperors but that just demonstrates the idiocy of the whole idea of "state religion".

What I also know for a fact, is that, whether in this one instance a specific order was given to that priest from a Superior to remove the posters or not, I can tell you right now that this is absolutely orthodox practise where Catholics of the traditional variety are concerned. And his superiors (Cardinal Pell, and above him, the present Pontiff) are as old-skool as they come. They are both classic 1950's types of Catholic, all pain and misery, no sex, no brains, no tolerance for pluralism of any kind. They are both essentially - yes, Godwin's law, whatever - spiritual Nazis! (that felt really good, btw!)

There is no distinction between "his own beliefs or his own accord", "the beliefs of his church / his religion or his faith", or " asked by his superiors or by the head honchos". It is all the same thing. That's why it happened.

The only sorts of Catholic priests who go off on a limb and act independently from their orders tend to be the progressives/Liberal types, i.e. those who would likely tolerate posters for a party they didn't necessarily support being posted along with all the others in a democratic (!?) country.

Hi Tim

I know bugger all (pardon the expression) about the Australian Sex Party too, except that they first came about as a successful reaction against the idiotic puritannical censorship laws being enforced a couple of decades ago (some still in effect), and against the general attitude of anti-sexualism stemming from religious nutjobs, against religious bigotry dictating secular policy, against the criminalization of the sex industry, basically against wowsers trying to sticky-beak into everyone else's lives and tell them how to live, and so forth. Australia today is still pretty fucked in some ways but it's a far cry from what it was in the days when Rosaleen Norton's paintings were being removed and her books mutilated.

Although I have no direct info, I doubt the ASP would have an official position on Paganism as a religion, because it's not their business.

Which I find rather refreshing!

Freedom of sexuality and freedom of speech are however our business, because they are VERY NEW THINGS FOR US TO HAVE - lest we forget.

Pointy hats off to the ASP, the Pirateparty and all others who work to promote and defend the basic freedoms which we take for granted, and the eradication of censorship by the few against the many.

Crimson Marquee - Red Tent Women's Circles

Posted by: "Hania Trzaskowski" purring_cougar_kitten@hotmail.com   chirinka_natural_therapies

Crimson Marquee - Red Tent Circles

Ever wanted to get together with a few others, share wisdom, gain insight
from one another in an easy going atmosphere?

Then a Red tent circle would be for you!

Every month, we have a 3-hour circle held on New moon to reflect upon the
month that has passed, prepare for the coming month ahead, share our
thoughts and insights and above all - do so with fun, tears and laughter!

......

Who is it for? - Open to all women (anyone who identifies as woman) from
menarche age group (first menstrual period age) to elder years.

The workshops cater to our needs for that month (listed below) according to
season and astrology, and can include oracles, visualisations/meditations,
art therapy, and sacred non-denominational womens ceremonies to inspire and
enrich our lives.

What kind of circles are they?

The circles are very easy going - you are under no obligation to take part
in everything, you are free to burp, fart, stretch, go grab a water, sit,
stand - anything that you need to do for your empowerment and experience as
long as it doesn't get in anybody elses way to do their own thing :-) There
is no pressure to have any particular experience, and every emotion is just
as valid as any other- feel free to laugh, cry, be bewildered or even just
sit in silence. All that is asked of you is to be genuine.:-)

They are also held on a equality basis - being that everyone is both student
and teacher, speaker and listener, and there is no one held higher than
anyone else as we all have our wisdom to share.

Cost - We ask for a contribution of $20 to cover costs. If you are in
financial struggle, please feel free to come along and perhaps offer some
services in barter (energy exchange) - contact us for more information. We
also run social events and workshops for free during each month. RSVP
essential - bring a plate to share if possible.

When & Where:
April Circles:

Sunday 3rd at 6pm at Chirinka Natural Therapies - Brunswick East
Monday 4th at 7pm at The Grove, 263 Nicholson St - Brunswick East

Upcoming social event & meditation afternoon Sunday 16th -( Free for all
circle dwellers)

Facebook Group - Keep in touch about coming months, events and social night

...
* Sekhmet Rising - Owning your Empowered Shadows *

This month embarks on a journey of the throat chakra - of speaking ones
truth and finding ones voice. Astrology predicts it will also be a time
where women will rise up to empower themselves, to stand up against
inequality, and seek justice for any wrong doing. In short - its the month
for the inner feminist! Ironically, there are agendas popping up already on
the internet where women are asked to stand up for workplace equality in
petitions, and at its unbalanced extreme - there is a push for women to rise
up "against their menfolk...."
No matter who you are or your gender and agenda - being biased, overly
angry, hate mongering and warrior like to the point of verbally, emotionally
or otherwise attacking people (in this case, men and our own inner masculine
- and in some cases - eachother), can be detrimental. Not just detrimental
to the people that this energy is focused on - but on ourselves as well!
This can be to an extreme with public agendas (such as Germaine Greer's
extreme views), but it can also be on an everyday level for each of us with
partners, family, friends and co-workers. It can also affect our health both
emotionally, physically and energetically.
So - is it possible to stand up for what we believe in as a woman, without
attacking our masculine? Can we achieve equality in our relationships
without becoming the dictator of a fem power realm? How do we keep our
lioness selves satisfied by being empowered, listened to and heard, sacred
ad respected without resorting to becoming the very beast we fear?
Do you have trouble speaking your mind and being heard? Afraid of what you
may unleash if you do start saying what you really think? Have you unleashed
your anger and directed it to the wrong person?
This months Crimson Marquee looks deeply into this emotional, environmental
and interpersonal tension, and seeks to shed light on the shadow. Embrace
your inner lioness that stand up for herself, whilst learning to use this
energy in a way that takes you forward.

This month will include circle sharing, oracle reading and group activities.
