10 Healing Gemstones                   ~about.com~

Rose Quartz:  Its gentle energy is a heart healer of physical heart ailments as well as emotional heartbreaks. Rose quartz is a timely gift to offer someone who desires to learn self-love.

Flourite:  comes in a variety of colors. Fluorite is a beneficial stone to help guard one against picking up negativity or negative energies from those nearby.  Basically, the stone absorbs any negativity, keeping it at bay. It is important to cleanse it at least once a week when you are using it as a protective helper.

Lapis:  Egyptian energy. Lapis is a stone that has been said to unlock mysteries as it helps one move through confusion and emotional blocks and dig through fog/muck to the root of problematic issues.

Hematite:  Hematite is a grounding stone. This silver-gray metallic gemstone is often used as a grounding tool to aid those who tend to avoid worldly tasks/events by out-of-body flight.

Jade:  Jade teaches acceptance. Carries serene and calming energy. It helps a person become less critical of self and others.
Amethyst:  This highly spiritual/healing stone is associated with The Christ Consciousness and the Violet Flame of Transmutation. Amethyst helps one attune to a higher awareness of knowing.

Turquoise:  Turquoise is a teaching stone can be used to help one learn spiritual lessons through meditation and/or dream visions. My first turquoise was a stone set in a silver ring my grandmother gave me as a souvenir she picked up for me when she vacationed in Arizona. It's little wonder that my grandmother has served as one of my spiritual advisors from the other side since her transition from the physical realm.

Kyanite:  Kyanite is best worn near the throat chakra. This blue crystal helps facilitate channeling and will open communications centers to enable contact with your guides and angels. Kyanite is probably best known for its balancing properties that align the chakras. There is no need to cleanse this stone, it clears itself automatically of negative energies.

Obsidian:  All varieties of obsidian are good utilized as grounding and protective agents - The snowflake in particular helps us surrender or let go of negative habits or past pathways that no longer the present condition. It will bring about opportunity for change, serenity, and clarity.

Citrine:  Citrine is a wonderful yellow stone. It helps to manifest your goals. Also keeps one cheerful. It attracts abundance and personal power.

Can Crystals help bring Positive Energy?

Posted by: "LadyHawk_Jax" ladyhawk_jax@yahoo.com   ladyhawk_jax

Can Crystals Help Bring Positive Energy?

As with any bad habit, negativity is learned; from our earliest days we so often hear that we can't do that or you will always be this. If something bad happens to us, we hear that it was supposed to be, it was fated. One of the negative statements often heard from so many people is that they will always be poor, and never have anything they want. Negative statements can become so ingrained in our subconscious that it becomes a part of us. We may not even know we are sabotaging ourselves with negative statements such as these.

The first step to changing any bad habit is to recognize it, own it and make a conscious decision to change it. We need to change the way we think, not just on a conscious level but on a subconscious level too; the only destiny we have is the one we choose, and the only fate laid out for us, is the one we create by our choices. There are many crystals that can assist us in changing negativity to positivity. First and foremost understand that there is more to this then just having the crystal. You have to tell the crystals what you want to do, AND you have to believe that you can do it. Tell yourself every day through positive affirmations as you work with your crystal, who you are creating with their help; you are creating a more positive you!

Let's start with a Smoky Quartz crystal. Smoky Quartz is a grounding stone. While very similar to clear Quartz, its color can vary from pale gray or brown to dark gray and even as deep as gray black. It slowly dissipates negative energy in a gentle manner. It can turn negative energy into positive energy. The added benefit is its ability to act as a shield against negative energy, acting as a sponge to absorb negative energy both from within you and from those around you. As you work with it, see the crystal pull the negative energy from you, send it into Mother Earth where it can be cleaned and returned to you as positive energy. Be sure to say your positive affirmations while doing this.

Chalcedony is a member of the Quartz family, which often contains a small amount of opal. Silvery gray in color it can vary in appearance from transparent to opaque. Chalcedony will help you release all those old beliefs you may have about yourself. By programming the crystal with new, positive things you would like to see in your life, you're reinforcing the change you want to see.

Citrine, also a member of the Quartz family, can range from a pale sunny yellow to golden to a deep burnt amber color. It is one of the rare stones in that it does not hold or accumulate negative energy and therefore never needs cleaning or clearing. It will help take old negative energy and thoughts, and transmute the energy into something new and uplifting. It doesn't absorb the energy but slowly dissipates it. This allows you to build the positive changes over several weeks. It has been shown through research that it takes at least three weeks to change a bad habit, so don't give up!

To deal with those people who are constantly putting you down and telling you that you are not good enough, carry an Apache Tear with you. Apache Tear is a variety of Obsidian and has the same metaphysical properties as Obsidian. While Obsidian is opaque, Apache Tear is translucent to semi-translucent, and can contain flashes of mahogany, violet and green. It is the additional attributes of Apache Tear that can really help in this situation. This stone is particularly good at helping you build your inner barriers against the type of people who put you down. As you learn to replace negative thoughts with positive ones, it will become easier to block out the negativity thrown at you. You will become your own best defense.

Jet is a stone that has been used by those in the know, as far back as in ancient times. It is a fossilized wood and very often found in or near coal mines, of which it is a form, albeit a very hard one. Jet can be matte in appearance to slightly polished looking. Jet differs from coal in that if you look carefully, you can often still see the compressed rings from the original tree. Jet teaches us to release our fears and self-doubts, so that we may learn self-confidence, and learn to trust ourselves. When we trust ourselves we learn to trust others.

Green Tourmaline will help you avoid negative situations before you get caught up in them, and can't get out. In appearance it is a vertically striated, long and narrow crystal. While tourmaline can transmute dense energy into a lighter more uplifting vibration, Tourmaline holds negative energy and must be cleansed after every use. As you build this new positive person inside you, you will soon begin to recognize and feel negative energy that radiates from other people. You will be able to avoid situations before they even start, through working with Green Tourmaline. It will be your choice.

As you work with the crystals you will begin to recognize old patterns and habits that no longer have meaning for you. When you see yourself in a more positive light you will begin to recognize the negativity in others, inversely you will begin to see the more positive response others now have toward you.

The Medicinal Window-box

Posted by: "LadyHawk_Jax" ladyhawk_jax@yahoo.com   ladyhawk_jax

The Medicinal Window-box by Anne Stone

If you live in an apartment without a garden, or if your garden is small, you may like to plant medicinal herbs in a window box.
Herbs will grow happily for one or two seasons in containers, but fresh planting each spring is recommended to ensure healthy plants.
Herbs thrive in poor soil and a loam-based compost is suitable. If using peat-based compost, add one part grit to five parts compost to improve
soil texture and drainage.

Choose slow-growing varieties of herbs and look out for some of the attractive variegated varieties available. Plant the taller herbs at
the back and put trailing plants near the edge.

Suitable herbs to grow in a window box are; Purple Sage, used for gargles for sore throats, hair rinses and teas.

Lemon Balm, used in teas and has a wonderful aroma.

Peppermint, may be used in teas for indigestion, nausea and headaches.

Wood Betony, adds color to the window box and the leaves can be used to make a relaxing tea to counter stress and tension.

Thyme, eases coughs and chest complaints and is useful in mouth washes.

Roman Chamomile, produces a steady stream of flowers throughout summer for tea-making.

Self-Heal, is an attractive plant, useful in eyebaths for inflamed or tired eyes.

Ground Ivy, is a very useful anticatarrhal for colds. Use the leaves in infusions or tinctures.

Traveling Spell Bags

Traveling Spell Bags

When traveling by plane, boat, or train, luggage can be misplaced. Put a spell bag of comfrey root and oregano in your luggage to ensure it will arrive when you do. Carrying a piece of moldavite (green translucent meteorites) or turquoise protects travelers. A spell bag containing feverfew can ward against sickness or accident during travel. Copper bracelets are said to aid against motion sickness. Make a mixture of salt, pine needles, and lavender to spread on the floor in hotel rooms to draw away negativity and the energy from former occupants. This mix will not set off the smoke alarms as smudge might.

Cosmic Calendar  Jul 15

Fri Jul 15, 2011 1:40 pm (PDT)

Once again the so-called curse of a void lunar cycle hangs suspended above humanity like the proverbial Sword of Damocles. Even though the Moon loses a certain amount of power when it is void, you are being encouraged to complete old business on a high note. That should be your game-plan in the hours preceding the Moon's arrival in Aquarius at 1:31PM PDT. Helping you learn more about investments and economic markets is a Mars-Vesta trine in air signs (12:12PM PDT).

Once the Moon is safely moving in Aquarius, group projects, team sports and community activism are promoted. Think more about ways to fulfill your higher destiny on Spaceship Earth by participating in global causes and movements close to your heart and philosophy of life.

Tensions may be building in the psychic atmosphere due to a Mercury-Uranus 135-degree connection (4:53PM PDT). On the other hand, you may be able to tweak this linkage in the direction of giving you a mental boost in advanced subjects.

Social, fashion and style themes are reinforced shortly thereafter - courtesy of a Venus-Juno inspirational 72-degree alliance (5:58PM PDT). This aspect can also offer support in romantic bonds.

Remember that the two days after any Full Moon constitute a 48-hour time-period to distribute the enlightening vibrations just received when the solar and lunar orbs reached their monthly climax. Be prepared for a potent Saturday tomorrow as several planetary alignments influence earthly affairs.

Save my lion!

Save my lion! Desperate plea from woman who
is looking after paralysed Ariel in her living room
By LEE MORAN
Last updated at 12:05 PM on 14th July 2011

Stretched across a mattress, Ariel the lion dozes as four people gently clean and massage his body.
Under usual circumstances his carers would be at risk of a serious mauling from the 140kg beast.
But three-year-old Ariel is no ordinary animal - because just over a year ago he was struck down by a debilitating virus which paralysed all four of his legs.
Scroll down for video...

Caring: Ariel's owner Raquel Borges launched the Facebook campaign to raise money to care for her paralysed lion

An internet campaign has now been launched by his owner Raquel Borges and vet Livia Pereira to raise the $11,500 needed each month to pay for his treatment.
A staggering 35,000 people have already clicked the 'like' button on Ariel's Facebook page and sent in donations to help fund his daily caring routine.
Pereira said: 'When the Facebook campaign began in May, we had less than five followers, because it was designed to inform people of Ariel's case not to ask for help.

'But then we started asking for donations and the number of people following Ariel's case soared.'
Pereira, who cares for Ariel at her home, said that for unknown reasons his white blood cells were attacking his healthy cells due to a degenerative disease affecting his medulla.
This is a portion of the brainstem involved in motor functions.

Routine: Vet Livia Pereira has taken Ariel into her home so she can care for him full-time

Kindness: Vet Livia Pereira snuggles in to paralysed lion Ariel

She believed Ariel's symptoms were similar to those of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and Guillain-Barre syndrome - an autoimmune disorder that can cause paralysis.
A team of Israeli veterinary neurologists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who tested Ariel to see what degenerative disease was involved, will publish their results later this month.
Their trip to Brazil was paid for by Graziela Barrette, a Brazilian model living in New York, who had been moved after hearing of Ariel's plight.
Ariel was born in the shelter that Borges and her husband run in the southern city of Maringa, where they care for sick or abandoned animals.
She said: 'He was a perfectly normal and docile lion that slept with me until he was 10-months-old.'

Passed out: Ariel lies on a mattress, propped up by packets of toilet rolls

Loving: Vet Livia Pereira kisses paralysed lion Ariel who has lost the use of his legs

But last year, after spending hours leaping and chasing balloons, Ariel started limping. 'I could tell he was in pain,' she added.
Days later he was unable to move his two hind legs and after surgery to remove a herniated disc he lost control of his front legs.
'He was submitted to a battery of tests and medical examinations that failed to show what was wrong with him, so three weeks ago we brought him to Sao Paulo where there are better-equipped veterinary clinics,' she added.
Pereira and Borges said they have received an offer from a Brazilian doctor to perform the blood-cleansing treatment called plasmapheresis on Ariel.
But because the equipment used to perform it must be modified for use on a large animal, it was not clear when that would take place.
Borges added: 'One thing we will never lose is our hope that Ariel will recover and start walking again.'

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"We have to educate ourselves to know who we are. That's what I mean when I say, 'Teach the children.'"

-- Eddie Benton-Banai, OJIBWAY

It is only by knowing ourselves that we can get in touch with our power. It is said, "Tell me what you know about yourself and I'll tell you what you know about God. Tell me what you know about God and I'll tell you what you know about yourself." As we increase knowledge of ourselves, as we choose to grow spiritually, as we clean up our act, then we can teach the children.

My Creator, You have said "Know thyself." Today let me see the wisdom of this Truth. Give me Your insight of myself. I am always walking the talk and most people can see it. Today, help and guide me on the Red Road.

6 Tips to Help Summer Depression

6 Tips to Help Summer Depression
(Lady N's Note: This is what I suffer from; what a change from my youthful days surfing at the beach)

July 5, 2011

The kids are out of school. Your neighbors are whistling on their way to work, greeting you with an enthusiasm peculiar to warm weather. And if you hear one more person ask you about your summer vacation plans, you will throw a US map and atlas at them.
You don’t mean to be grumpy. But darn it, you are miserable in the oppressive heat, your kids are home for 90 consecutive days, and you are don’t have the stamina to pretend you are giddy that summer has arrived.
Sound familiar?
You’re not alone. After publishing a piece recently about the trigger of Memorial Day for me â€" reminding me that most of my relapses have happened in the summer months â€" I’ve heard from so many readers that fear this time of year for the same reason: summer depression.

Ian A. Cook, MD, the director of the Depression Research Program at UCLA names five causes of summer depression in an article published by our friends over at WebMD:
1. Summertime SAD.

You’ve probably heard about seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, which affects about 4% to 6% of the U.S. population. SAD typically causes depression as the days get shorter and colder. But about 10% of people with SAD get it in the reverse â€" the onset of summer triggers their depression symptoms. Cook notes that some studies have found that in countries near the equator â€" like India â€" summer SAD is more common than winter SAD.
2. Disrupted schedules in summer.
If you’ve had depression before, you probably know that having a reliable routine is often key to staving off symptoms. But during the summer, routine goes out the window â€" and that disruption can be stressful, Cook says. If you have children in grade school, you’re suddenly faced with the prospect of keeping them occupied all day, every day. If your kids are in college, you may suddenly find them â€" and all their boxes of stuff â€" back in the house after a nine-month absence. Vacations can disrupt your work, sleep, and eating habits â€" all of which can all contribute to summer depression.
3. Body image issues.
As the temperature climbs and the layers of clothing fall away, a lot of people feel terribly self-conscious about their bodies, says Cook. Feeling embarrassed in shorts or a bathing suit can make life awkward, not to mention hot. Since so many summertime gatherings revolve around beaches and pools, some people start avoiding social situations out of embarrassment.
4. Financial worries.
Summers can be expensive. There’s the vacation, of course. And if you’re a working parent, you may have to fork over a lot of money to summer camps or babysitters to keep your kids occupied while you’re on the job. The expenses can add to a feeling of summer depression
5. The heat.
Lots of people relish the sweltering heat. They love baking on a beach all day. But for the people who don’t, summer heat can become truly oppressive. You may start spending every weekend hiding out in your air-conditioned bedroom, watching pay-per-view until your eyes ache. You may begin to skip your usual before-dinner walks because of the humidity. You may rely on unhealthy takeout because it’s just too stifling to cook. Any of these things can contribute to summer depression.

Alrighty, so now that we have a full list of what is contributing to our depression, what do we do about it?
1. Get on a schedule.

As Cook mentioned, I absolutely need a schedule to stay sane. Without one, I’m in trouble. So a month or so before school ends for the year, I get out my calendar and start marking it up. They will go to this camp during this week. I will be able to work from 8 to 3 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I will swim in the morning on these days. You get the point.
2. Plan something fun.
It doesn’t have to be expensive. Something as simple as taking a day off of work to have lunch with a friend or chill out with a novel at home can be incentive to get through a few weeks. One good piece of advice I received when I was trying to work through a severe depression was to plan something enjoyable every few weeks to keep me motivated to move forward. Not that I had to envision myself as having a jolly old time. But something that could give me an ounce of joy carried me through many hot summer afternoons.
3. Replace the triggers.
In their book, Extinguishing Anxiety, authors Catherine Pittman and Elizabeth Karle explain that in order to retrain the brain from associating a negative event to a trigger that creates anxiety, we must generate new connections by exposure. So, for me, I need to replace memories of relapses in the summer (which trigger anxiety for me during the summer) with positive events during the summer. I mentioned in a recent piece, that one way I’m doing this is by getting involved in my kids’ swim team because that generates feelings of peace and happiness. And in so doing, being around the pool won’t remind me as much of the days when I sat slumped over in the baby pool section, unable to carry out a conversation with anyone.
4. Sleep.
It’s important to maintain good sleep hygiene in the summer. That is, even though the day’s events are changing from week to week, make sure to keep your sleep schedule the same: go to bed at the same time every night, wake up at the same time every morning, and don’t sleep much less than 7 hours and no more than 9 hours a night. When depressed, it’s common to want to sleep as much as you can, to kill the hours. However, extra sleep does increase depression.
5. Exercise.
During the summer months, it’s easy to abandon any exercise program that you’ve been disciplined enough to start since the oppressive heat can be dangerous, if not terribly unappealing. So before the heat sets in, design a plan you can stick with that won’t make you stick to everything else. I run early in the morning during the summer, before the humidity sets in, and I try to swim more often.
6. Be around people.
As tempting as it is to isolate during the summer, forcing yourself to be around people â€" even if you don’t join the discussion â€" is going to assist your mood and especially the ruminations that get your into trouble. If you don’t want to leave your air-conditioned home, at least make yourself call one person â€" a sibling, friend, or co-worker â€" to stay connected to the world.

Build Confidence Spell

Build Confidence Spell

Confidence is important. A confident person inspires trust from others. We all could use a bit more self-assurance at work and school. To build confidence today, brew some black tea. As you add honey to it, whisper: “The sweetness of life is mine to savor.” Before drinking, say: “Black tea, evoke confidence within me.” While you drink your confidence tea, visualize yourself confident and self-assured in every situation. Imagine the people you may encounter and the places you may go today. See and feel those around you reacting in a positive way to your calm confidence. To add potency to this spell, carry one black tea bag with you all day, then place black tea leaves in your pillow or under your mattress while you sleep.

Home Remedies for Treating Insect Bites/Stings

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Home Remedies for TREATING Insect Bites/Stings

When it comes to offering home remedies, many people immediately become pharmacists or doctors. So far, I have blogged about treating sunburn and preventing insect bites (like mosquitoes). But what happens if the bugs bite you anyway? Obviously, there are plentiful home remedies for treatment as well.
My Appalachian youth was rich in home remedies, handed down from my grandmother (and probably from her grandmother). Many home treatments apparently got lost in oral translation. We rarely wore shoes in the summer. Since our lawn areas were filled with clover, it was inevitable that you would get a honey bee sting. In rained in Pennsylvania a few times a week which created puddles and moist areas favored by mosquitoes. Spiders (not an insect, incidentally) and wasps moved into the cabins that we made in the woods. Needless to say, we got bit and stung…often.
I would run (hop, actually) into the house, where my mother would make a paste out of baking soda and water, and apply it to the sting. If I was out and about, I would just put cool mud on it.
Up until my high school years, bee stings were only a temporary reminder that shoes are important. I would get a painful, swollen foot for a while, followed by several days of itching to drive the lesson home. In high school, I had a summer job that required feeding a variety of animals. One day, I stepped onto a ground nest of yellow jackets. I was wearing shoes, but they flew up may pant leg and stung me repeatedly. I whipped off my trousers like they were on fire. I was covered by hives.
A few minutes later, I started to itch all over; in places were I was not stung. My scalp, my back, the palms of my hands, and my face was itching like crazy, making me into this scratching maniac. I grabbed a brush that I used to curry the horses and used it as a back scratcher to the point where my skin was bleeding. A more-knowledgeable adult decided that I should go to the emergency room. A quick injection of epinephrine (Adrenalin) and Benadryl settled me down.
A few days later, I was stung by a yellow jacket again. This time, I was only stung once on the tip of my finger. Thinking I would be getting those itchy hives again, I waited. I was right, but this time my neck began to swell to the point where my chin was at the same level as my chest. I began to have breathing difficulties. This is a true, anaphylactic reaction. It was back to the emergency room again. I remember receiving just one piece of advice: Stay away from bees (Doh!). This is why doctors earn the big bucks.
Four decades later, I was still packing an EpiPen, at least until my HMO insurance company turned it down as a covered prescription. The pharmacist wanted to charge me $135 for 25 cents worth of epinephrine. Of course, being the in the medical profession, I ordered some epinephrine and made my own EpiPen. I was able to buy two dozen vials of epinephrine for about $12. Unfortunately, non-medical people do not have access to these high-level home remedies.
Prevention is much easier than treatment, but prevention is rarely 100% when it comes to bites and stings. Most people have their own home remedies, unless of course, you have a history of anaphylactic reactions, in which case, home remedies have absolutely no place in your first-aid kit. You better have that EpiPen and some antihistamines handy.
As I suspected, many of the same home remedies used for treating sunburn are the same as for insect bites. For mosquito bites, people are using Scope mouthwash, hairspray, Preparation H, Clorox, and dryer sheets. I would like to meet the person (probably a woman) who has a bulging purse containing these things, just in case. Additionally, home remedies for mosquito bites also include aspirin or Alka Seltzer (contains aspirin) made into a poultice, toothpaste, honey, tobacco (mixed with saliva, of course), chilies, lavender or rosemary oil, tea tree oil, tea bags, onion, salt, roll-on deodorant, lemon juice, vinegar, meat tenderizer, baking soda, banana peels, and myrrh (not frankincense or gold, apparently). One home “surgeon” suggested sticking a sterilized needle into the wound and sucking out the poison using a vacuum pump. There are a few hundred more that I have not listed.
For bee or wasp stings, home remedies include ice, mud, meat tenderizer (again), and of course, a disgusting wad of tobacco/saliva.
Do these things work? The simple answers are no, maybe, and yes. I have personally tried meat tenderizer for non-Yellow Jacket stings (remember that I am allergic to them), and found it helpful (maybe). My anecdotal experience is not scientific evidence of efficacy. I have used baking soda mixed with water in a paste, assuming I am home. I do carry or have a box of baking soda in my first-aid kit. Would the aspirin paste work? Perhaps, since aspirin is an anti-inflammatory drug. Again, I don’t carry aspirin around either. Preparation H is best used for ‘roids, in a place that people are rarely, if ever, stung.

What does work for minor, localized insect bite reactions? Start with ice, if you have it, or a cold can of soda applied to the site. A can of cold beer would also work. If you have some hydrocortisone cream, apply it to the bite site. If you are home, keep the hydrocortisone cream in the refrigerator to keep it cold. Do not do this if you have a teenager who may mistake the tube for squirt cheese. If you are prone to itching, take some Benadryl (assuming you do not have to drive).
If you have ever had a serious allergic response in the past, you need to have an EpiPen, or marry a medical provider that carries his/her well-stocked black bag. Every year, more people die or have serious allergic reactions to bees, than rattlesnake bites. Incidentally, there are not good home remedies for rattlesnake bites.
