What you are asking for is tantamount to the death penalty.
If you believe that this person ought never be released, then he may as well have been shot upon conviction.
The purpose of jail ought not be revenge, or the extraction of pain - but removal from society until such time as the person can be rehabilitated and re-introduced to society. If you don't believe that is possible, then the prisoner should be executed to save his anguish and our $$.

It is enlightening to read on the Foreign Policy magazine website that Americns are calling for the Norway gunman to be nailed to a wall upside down, whereas the Norwegians are saying 'sorry, nothing would make us stoop to that level, it is enough that he has been captured. In 21 years we will assess the situation again'

No Gary I am simply asking that he should be simply heavily supervised
is all. Unfortunately if you read the statistics there far and few
between with pedophiles that they are ever *really* have been
rehabilitated
as they always seem to commit the same
obnoxious crime agian when released..

All I am sying is that he should be under strict supervision is all..
again this only my meek opinion is all..

Greetings Gary.

Gee the old Fletcher/Ryan chestnut again! Reluctant though I am to jump on the bandwaggon; in fact I wont, I shall comment on your statements in a general sense not just regarding Fletcher.

I agree in principal with the death penalty, my big reservation is the question of whether or not the criminal justice system has the capacity to decide reliably guilt or innocence. I agree with your premise about the ideal purpose of prisons...But we don't have an ideal world and rather than rehabilitate, all to often they harden the resolve of offenders to be enemies of society. (Hells Bells I guess I am an enemy of our society too.. Yet I don't feel the need to commit crimes to express this.. Have I just shot my own argument in the foot?)

Is rehabilitation possible? Yes in some cases I believe it is, but in the majority..No Usually anyone who expresses even tacit support for the concept of a death penalty is accused of all sorts of things often the least of which is being incapable of compassion. But putting myself in the shoes of a person convicted (accurately) of some really bad act, do I want a soul destroying existence in a prison for what would seem like an eternity, or a quick release from what has most likely been a pretty crap life anyway and a hellish future? I know what my choice would be.

Bill.

One advantage of keeping him alive in a box is that his mail is a
source of valuable anti- terrorist/fascist/loony intelligence for the

Don't worry Graham I spend a lot of time hiding behind rocks trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those whose noses I seem to regularly put out of joint :-) Haven't resorted to a white flag yet though...Bill.

Hi Simon.

Well I guess we agree on the tolerance bit. We probably all have had different experiences, but the worst intolerance I have encountered has come from neoPagans who just cannot accept the other people may identify as "Pagan" but NOT worship nature. Or adhere to any of the other newage clap trap popular with much of neopaganism. (Then to really throw them into a real tizzy, tell them you think the darling of the neo set Joseph Campbell has written the greatest load of old manure since St Thomas. Or even worse, that their revered Mr Hutton's books are no better)

When I hear the calls for acceptance and tolerance oft emerging from this or that "Pagan" organization here to lead us into the light from our world of ignorance and darkness, I often offend by suggesting they look up the definitions of these terms and ask themselves if they actually abide by them.

As for you not minding putting Pagan on the census form, hey Simon I don't have a problem with you doing that either. What I do have a big problem with is that I am told I must fill out their form or be fined. They already know who I am, where I am and a whole lot of other information about me I'm not sure I am comfortable about them having. Do they really need to have me give them that same information every few years? Yes.. thankfully the religion questions are not compulsory, neither should any of the others IMO.

Bill.

As a comparison to the Christian belief system I once heard that they have over 100 thousand different denominations, they all call themselves Christians but when referring to "that lot down the road, well they don't quite have it right"

Pickup the article this morning, already forward to my friends in outrange. What happen to separation of "Church & state"? May be Fred is worried that Christens will miss out on any reasonable ethics instruction. As ex RC (or as Phillip Adams refers to us, LC), I leant my ethics outside the church.
