Rules for living in Jacksonville

1. You must learn to say the city name correctly. It is usually referred to as "Jax".

2. You must be a Jaguar (pronounced Jag-WAR, not Jag-WIRE) fan. It is a
requirement for citizenship. Also, you are either a Gator or a 'Nole. There are no other schools. It's better to learn that sooner than later.

3. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. No one pays attention to
them here, including the Police. Merging, yielding, and right-of-way are
completely foreign terms.

4. To find anything in Jax it is required that you know where Regency
Square is. It is the Alpha and the Omega. The beginning and the end.

5. Directions to anywhere may, and usually do, make a reference to "the old
Pic N Save". (All Pic N Save stores are closed, and have been for a long time.)

6. The morning rush hour is from 6 am to 10am. The evening rush hour is
from 3pm to 7pm. Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning.

7. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear-ended, cussed
out, and possibly shot.

8. East Rd. meets West Rd. on Beach Blvd, but they both run North and
South.

9. Normandy Boulevard, State Road 228, Cecil Field Road, Maxville Road, and
Post Street are all the same road.

10. On the southeast side of town, Hartley Road, Shad Road, and Hood Road
are all the same road. Hartley Road is the western part of the road, and
Shad Road is the eastern part of the road. Now don't be confused about this
Hood Road.
This is the West-East part that is in between Hartley and Shad,
not the North-South part that starts out as old Kings Road South, changes
into Hood Road South, and ends at Losco Road. Got it?

11. Construction is a permanent fixture in Jax. The barrels are moved
around in the middle of the night to make the next day's driving a bit more
exciting.

12. Watch very carefully for road hazards such as deer, skunks, dogs,
barrels, cones, ladders, cows, horses, pot holes, cats, pieces of other
cars, single shoes, opossum, truck tires, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits,
crows or vultures feeding on any of these items.

13. The minimum acceptable speed on J Turner Butler Blvd. is 75 mph.
Anything less is considered downright sissy. This is Jacksonville's version
of NASCAR. There was so much speeding on JTB that they raised the speed
limit from 55 to 60.

14. Never honk at anyone. Ever. Seriously.

15. If you are in the left lane, and only going 70 in a 55 zone, you are
considered a road hazard and will be "flipped off" accordingly.

16. Ground clearance of at least 12 inches is recommended for city driving.

17. If it's 100 degrees, Thanksgiving must be next weekend.

18. There are really only two seasons here: Summer and January.

19. There is actually a Westside high school that has a confederate battle
flag as its school flag, an image of a slave plantation owner as its
mascot, and Dixie as its school song. Just accept it. Please don't make a
fuss about it, for your own safety. (Lady Nightshayde's Note: The mascot is now a harmless looking farmer, and Dixie is no longer their school song. When my children went there, they were the proud Rebels. They no longer allow the rebel flag, but they do allow the school marching band to be called the "Rebel Brigade." Politically correct, ya know? We are smart, but we are not so smart.)

20. Ponte Vedra is to Middleburg as oceanfront is to double-wide.

21. If you choose to live in Orange Park, or, God forbid, Middleburg, plan
to leave for work at 4am and return home around 11pm. Otherwise you may get
caught in what can only be described as "the world's longest left-turn
lane".

22. Don't get here late and expect something to eat. After 9pm, your
choices are Denny's, IHOP, and Waffle House.

23. You can buy a million dollar condo downtown on the river, but you have
to drive 10 miles for a loaf of bread, and never after dark.

24. The Landing is an interesting place. Every time you visit, there will
be a whole new set of restaurants, fewer stores, and less parking. Hooters,
however, is a permanent fixture.

25. All city council decisions must be signed off on by the First Baptist
Church.

26. You can't drink alcohol and see topless girls at the same time. But,
if you agree to drink Diet Coke, you can see them fully nude.

27. North Philips highway. Don't go there. Ever. Unless, of course, you are
looking for motels that charge by the hour.

28. Learn all of the lyrics to every Lynyrd Skynyrd song. Trust me on this
one.

29. If you like southern style barbecue, you've come to the right place.
There's a Bar-B-Que restaurant on every corner. But, they all close at 9pm.

30. Convenience stores are literally EVERYWHERE, unless you live in a
million-dollar condo downtown.

Lughnasadh/Lammas--Recipes, Ritual, & Lore

Lughnassadh/Lammas--Recipes, Ritual, & Lore

A Wiccan tradition you can partake in to celebrate the Festival of
Breads involves the making of bread. This custom is a continual rite that
can become a part of your ritual awakening with the Sun God throughout
the years.

At dawn, offer the one-quarter of a loaf that was saved and frozen
from last year's celebration to the birds, squirrels, or rabbits in your area.
Later in the day, make a new loaf of bread. Stick a candle in the center
of this bread. Sprinkle cornmeal (which is sacred to the God) clockwise
around the circle. Begin by honoring the spirits from each of the four
elements. With an athame or other ritual item, draw an imaginary circle as your
boundary. Call forth the spirits that will safeguard and guide you through this
rite. If you choose to do this with others, invite them to pray to their
guides/spirits/angels for astral protection. Feel the energy rise
and the warm glow of living spirits protecting you, the guests, and the
circle.

Once the circle has been cast, walk clockwise around the circle three
times. On each turn, thank the Sun God for lending His energy so that we may
all grow strong and healthy and bask in His glorious warmth, and for the
grain, corn, and other products He nurtures and nourishes with His healing
and sustaining heat. Break the bread, saving one-quarter for next year.
Pass the three-quarter loaf around for the guests to eat and enjoy.

CORN BREAD

2 cups (400 grams) flour
2 cups (454 grams) cornmeal
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons sugar
4 large eggs
2 cups (480 milliliters) buttermilk (see note)
1/2 cup (120 milliliters) corn oil
1 cup (228 grams) corn kernels

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl, mix together the
flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Beat the eggs in a larger
bowl. Whisk the buttermilk, oil, and kernels into the beaten eggs. Add the
egg mixture to the dry ingredients, just until combined. Be careful not
to overmix, which causes air bubbles.

Pour the mixture into a piecrust, an 11 by 8-inch baking dish, or two
small well-buttered pie tins. Bake for 1 hour, or until a knife inserted
in bread comes out clean. Remove from pan and cool on a wire rack.

Note: You can substitute 1 cup (240 milliliters) yogurt and 1 cup of
milk for the buttermilk.

LUGH

During this season, Lugh (pronounced loo), the Celtic Sun God, is
honored for all that he offers us during this season. With this first harvest of
wheat and grain also comes the reaping of corn. Corn is sacred to both
Pagans and Native Americans, who both also use stones in ritualistic work.

Native Americans use the "stone people" to help them connect with
Mother Earth. Although methods of sweat lodge ceremonies vary from tribe to
tribe, one sweat lodge in which I, Jamie, attended was set up as follows: a
fire was built outside the tent, with stones thrown in it to get red hot. On
cue, the keeper of the stones reached outside the shut tent flap and, with two
small sturdy branches, collected the red-hot stones. He carefully placed
the stones in a hole that was dug in the center. The leader sprinkled
consecrated water on the stones, asking for guidance. The steam and
heat rose, bringing an altered state of consciousness to the people
inside. Messages were sent to and received from the stone people. We
chanted, drummed, and sang. Some two hours later we emerged and laid on the
moist earth, breathing in time with the Great Mother; we were cleansed.
Each ceremony is sacred and different and quite often so intimate that
they are never repeated in the same way.

Celtic Pagans have long looked on Stonehenge and Avebury in England
as locations for divining the future, giving them a sense of solidity,
strength, and the power of the mystics. According to Celtic mythology, Lugh
also attuned himself with the stone people. Lugh's father was stoned to
death and then buried six feet deep under the very same stones, which called to
Lugh and guided him to his father. When he came to accuse his father's
killers, he emerged from the East, just as the sun appears to us every
morning. His golden rays of righteous radiance splintered across the countryside
to bring the truth to light.

Stones, gems, and crystals are the keepers of historical record for
Mother Earth. They possess the secrets that we learn from or fail by. You
may want to collect all your precious stone familiars. Sit quietly down with
them. The stones work as catalysts to help you find the answers within your
own heart. Gemstones possess unique properties that can assist you in a
variety of problems and situations. Use the stones wisely, and know that you
were born with all the knowledge of the Universe: You just need to
remember.

Jennifer DeVeoux donated this recipe:

LUGH'S CORN CASSEROLE
Serves 8

4 cups (907 grams) canned or frozen corn
4 egg yolks
2 tablespoons sugar
Salt and Pepper
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon (1/8 stick/15 grams) butter
1 large yellow onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, sliced
1 green bell pepper, chopped
2 serrano chilies, seeded and minced
4 ounces (112 grams) extra-firm Tofu (see note)
1 (16-ounce {454 gram} ) can stewed tomatoes, diced
2 teaspoons minced fresh oregano

In a food processor or blender, mix together the corn, egg yolks, and
sugar until well-blended. Season with salt and pepper. Lightly butter a 2-
quart (2-liter) casserole dish. Spoon in half the corn mixture. Set aside.

Heat the olive oil and butter in a large skillet, until the butter is
melted. Saute' the onion for 3 minutes, until soft. Add the garlic, bell
pepper, and chilies. Saute' until the pepper is soft. Add the tofu,
tomatoes, and oregano. Season again with salt and pepper. Let stew for
approximately 20 minutes to combine the flavors.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spoon this filling over the corn
mixture in the casserole dish. Spoon the rest of the corn mixture over the
filling. Bake for 25 to 35 minutes, until golden brown on top and bubbling.

Note: Skinless, boneless chicken may be substituted for the tofu.

Modern Magic For Busy Folks

TO CLEANSE A MAGICAL WORKING SPACE

small bowl or basket
censer
chamomile
hematite
charcoal block
equal parts dragon's blood, frankincense, and myrrh
box of table salt

Place the bowl or basket in the center of the working space. Fill it with chamomile and place the hematite on top. Lay your hands over the baskets and chant:

Stone and flower, now erase
Negative energy in this space.
Force it out and send it down
Into the Earth where it can ground.

Light the charcoal and place it in the censer. Add the equal parts of dragon's blood, frankincense, and myrrh. Starting at the East and working widdershins, cense the boundaries of the area three times. With every pass, chant:

Smoke and Fire of ancient lore
Purify every pore
Of this space and cleanse it free
Of smut and negative energy.

Place the censer at the East.

Take the box of table salt, starting at the East and working deosil, scatter its contents along the area boundaries. As you scatter the salt, chant:

Evil, you must go away.
All good spirits come and stay.

Stand in the center of the area with your arms stretched outward. Say:

This place be purified and free
Of all matter of negativity.
All work and spells shall flow with ease
As I will, so mote it be!

When the charcoal burns out, bury the ashes in the ground or flush them down the toilet. Place the basket of chamomile and hematite in a prominent area of the space.

TO CLEANSE RITUAL TOOLS

white candle
small bowl of water
frankincense or sandalwood incense
small dish of salt

Light the candle and the incense. Pass the tool through the incense smoke and chant:

I cleanse you with the breath of Air
Winds blown cold and winds blown fair.

Pass the tool through the candle flame. Chant:

I cleanse you with the warmth of Fire,
Dancing flame and purifier.

Asperge the tool with water. Chant:

With Water I cleanse and give you life,
Babbling brook and surging knife.

Sprinkle the tool with soil. Chant:

I cleanse you with the depths of Earth,
Home of death and place of birth.

Take the tool in both hands and lift it skyward. Say:

Be free of negativity!
As I will, so mote it be!

GENERAL CONSECRATION FOR RITUAL TOOLS

(Deity/deities of choice), I ask that You
Add your power to this tool.
Bless it in Your sacred Name
And never let its power wane.
I consecrate this tool to Thee
As I will, so mote it be.

Home as Sacred Space

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Wed Jul 20, 2011 9:13 pm (PDT)

Home As Sacred Space

My home and hearth are the physical centers of my strength. If my home is stable, no matter what is going on with the rest of my life, I feel confident about handling it. If my home is in turmoil, so is the rest of my life.

I live in Manhattan, which is a wonderfully wacky place to live in general. There is energy careening around twenty-four hours a day, both good and bad. There is constant stimulation. You never know what or who you will run into at any given moment, and need to literally be ready for anything. It's exhilarating and exhausting. It makes it even more important that my home be a sanctuary. How does one do that? I have a few ideas that I would like
to share.

Organizing Your Space

Set your home up the way you want it. My desk used to be in the bedroom, because that is where there was room for it. However, I don't like to write in my bedroom. I like to sleep, read, make love, play with the cats, and do ritual work in the bedroom. Having my computer in there was distressing. I like to write in the kitchen. I like to be near the phone and fax machine, the food, the coffee, and the cats. So, I now write on my kitchen table, and I am in the process of converting my bedroom desk into a sewing table. I don't have television or telephone in my bedroom. I realize that if one has children, one must have a telephone in the bedroom, but I don't yet, and I'm taking advantage of it. I have an answering machine and my fax machine in the living room, and that's the way I like it.

There are, of course, practical considerations to organizing your living space. Feng shui is great, but one can't always make it work. If you live in a studio apartment, you do everything in one room; if you live with other people, you have to take them into consideration. Within those considerations, however, you can keep shifting your objects around until they feel right. You'll feel it when you've hit it. The entire room will feel lighter.

Altars and Shrines

I consider my working spaces "altars," although some of them could be
considered shrines, I suppose. I have one for each direction, set on the
farthest outer wall of each direction in the apartment: north, east, south,
and west. The north, east, and south happen to be in my living room. The
west altar doubles as my Moon altar and is in the bedroom. I also have an
altar to Hestia over my stove (which is the exact center of my home), an
altar to Iris under construction, an altar to Kuan Yin filled with small,
beautiful objects with special meaning to me in the bedroom, and my main
working altar also in my bedroom. Yes, it's a lot of sacred spaces in one
small apartment, but it makes it possible for me to look up from whatever
I'm working on and look into a special place.

The altars are not large--most of them are simply a shelf attached to the
wall, and the top of a bureau or table with a few special objects that to me
embody the energy of the direction or the goddess.

Atmosphere

Candles and statues are scattered throughout the apartment. I try to keep
fresh flowers in the living room and bedroom. My bathroom is decorated to
be part undersea grotto and part garden. I have enough scented bath oils
and powders to make a great fruit salad in the tub. Although I am not the
world's greatest housekeeper, I try to keep the place at least vacuumed and
the floors mopped with a special floor wash. I burn incense. I do monthly
protection, purification, and thanks rituals.

Sadness, grief, and unpleasant emotions are a part of life, and we will all
experience them. however, if the atmosphere in the home is sacred and
balanced, it gives one room to experience the negative emotions without
becoming overwhelmed by them. It is easier to regain perspective and to
start finding active solutions to what is not working in one's life.

Blessings and Consecrations

The entire apartment has been blessed and consecrated. I do regular
purifications, protections, and, if necessary, banishments on the
appropriate Moon cycle. I like to wash my doorway and threshold with a
tea-like brew make of steeped rosemary and lavender leaves. I like to wipe
my chrome, shelves, and metal lampshades with peppermint oil diluted in hot
water. I pour vinegar down my drains each New Moon. Most importantly, I
enjoy performing each of these acts, and as I work, I visualize how I want
the apartment to look and feel.

Often, when I'm doing ritual work within a cast circle at home, I cast to
include my entire apartment. There will be those who disagree and believe
that energy needs to be contained within the nine-foot circle in order to be
effective. If that is what you believe, that is what is true for you.
However, I found that by using my entire apartment as the place between the
worlds, once the circle is opened, the energy still permeates the entire
apartment and it feels wonderful for several days.

When I have had a hard day out in the world, I want to step over my
threshold and enter a sacred place where I am safe, happy, and in close
contact with the spirits. By making my entire home a sacred space, I feel
like I walk into a loving embrace whenever I walk through the door. Inside
my home, I find strength and renewal and joy to face whatever needs to be
faced in work and life.

Ten "Spiritual" Exercises to Life Your Spirits

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Wed Jul 20, 2011 9:14 pm (PDT)

Ten "Spiritual" Exercises To Lift Your Spirits

(From "Cognizance & Free Thought"; a newsletter published in the
1980's and early 1990's)

1) Light a candle on your roomie's, friend's, or relative's forehead
while they are sleeping. See how long it takes for them to wake up.
This will tell you how long you will live.

2) Tell your future by interpreting the patterns in popcorn, beer
cans and cigarette butts left on the floor after your last party. It
is a lot like reading tea leaves.

3) Choose an outfit for the day using a divining rod.

4) Determine what your friends have done during the day by smelling
their odor eaters.

5) Go outside skyclad, come in and interpret the patterns in your
goose bumps. It is a lot like reading tea leaves.

6) Tape music videos, play them backwards on your VCR and try to find
subliminal images and rock stars that take on Satanic appearances.

7) Interpret forms in your sculptured carpet. It is a lot like
reading tea leaves.

8) At breakfast, eat all but a few bits of cereal, then stir it
vigorously and interpret the resulting designs. It is a lot like
reading tea
leaves.

9) Develop a 'tarot' style deck using subscription card inserts from
magazines.

10) Lay on the floor under a table in a restaurant and interpret the
designs and patterns in the gum wads. It is a lot like reading tea
leaves!

Elder's Meditation of the Day

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"It was good for the skin to touch the earth, and the old people liked to remove their moccasins and walk with bare feet on the sacred earth... The soil was soothing, strengthening, cleansing, and healing."

-- Chief Luther Standing Bear, TETON SIOUX

Touching the earth - getting grounded, centered. There is magic in touching the earth and feeling her healing power. This is especially healthy to do during a troubling time when our minds are racing or can't stop thinking or are locked onto fear or resentment. When I need to feel free I can go to the Mother Earth. The Mother Earth is full of life and love. She always gives her powers to those who come to her. The Mother Earth is alive.

Today, my Great Spirit, let me remember to touch the earth. Let me slow down and live just for today. Let me be gentle, patient and kind.

Someone who's an old friend of my sons' and whose mother works with my ex husband is in hospital in a coma. She was served a dessert containing something she's allergic to and her situation has deteriorated to where she's comatose and in system failure, requiring dialysis and 'tubes'. My heart goes out almost as much to the mum as the daughter, having to be by her child's bedside and watching her probably dying due to a stupid mistake or misinformation. Please keep Chen and her family in your prayers or healings.

Miki, sorry this reply is late, we added Chen's nam to the Healing Circle tonight.
