Camping and Overnight Accommodations

Again this year, we are going to let people camp wherever they want - in the field, forest or in-between. The pottapotties, showers, potable water, meals and concerts will all still be down near the house so if you camp in the woods, plan to get your hiking in. There will be designated fire pits. Do not make new ones. This time of year is typically dry but rainstorms have been known to happen, so we strongly recommend you bring a tarp or ground cloth to put under your tent.

Parking space is limited, so no campers or RV's, please.
There are a limited number of B&B's and inns in Bethel and nearby towns. Please contact Laurelin staff if you would like further information.

Toilets, Showers, and Water
Port-a-potties will be available on-site. There is an outdoor shower with warm water. (You may want to bring solar showers if you like warm/ hot showers). There is an outdoor sink for washing dishes and drinking water. All of these are down near the main house.

Meal Plan
We will again be offering our delicious meal plan - with both carnivore and vegetarian options - catered by the amazing Chef Dave. It includes: breakfast, lunch and dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and brunch on Sunday (10 meals).

The plan can be bought either for the whole festival, Friday through Sunday, or just Saturday and Sunday. If you are signing up for the meal plan, we need your registration NO LATER than July 15th.

Please also let us know right away if you have any special dietary needs/ allergies.

Village Builders
This year we will be having a special day for those people who would like to come together as a smaller group to share, connect and participate in the creation of our magickal village. In ritual and with magickal intent, we will break into teams each dedicated to creating and maintaining one aspect of our magickal community - some hard physical labor, and others less so. Arrival is by Noon on Tuesday, August 3rd. There is no cost for coming to Village Builders however the meal plan will be offered (dinner on Tuesday, breakfast, lunch and dinner on Wednesday). Cost for the Builders meal plan is an additional $28.00.

Workshops, Rituals, and Activities
If you have an idea for a workshop, ritual, discussion, performance, or children's activity - we'd LOVE to hear about it! Don't be shy - we're open to any and all ideas. Help us make Lughnasadh an exciting, rich and fun-filled experience that will keep everyone coming back year after year (and bringing more friends too!). Send your proposals via email to: laurelin@sover.net before July 1st. (Sooner is better!) You will be notified by July 8th whether or not it is accepted.

Vendor Info
We'd love to have lots of vendors for Lughnasadh 2011! Crafts, clothing, food, mead, New Age, whatever! We've got plenty of space and there is no fee for merchanting; however, we do ask a 10% commission on your sales at the end of the event. One person (the merchant) can have their registration fee waived. Any guests/ helpers would have to pay full registration. You still have to provide your own food, travel, etc. Please complete the Vendor Registration form and return it with your reservation along with photos of your booth and/or website information. These can be very useful for promoting you before you even get here. Please bring your own setup/display, weather protection, and safe storage facilities.

Pets/ Dogs
Dogs are welcome this year at the festival. However, you MUST provide proof of rabies vaccination or your dog will not be permitted. Further, all dogs must be kept on-leash at all times in the fields or around the house. They are free to run loose in the wooded areas. You are expected to pick up and dispose of any waste left in areas where people will be walking, camping, etc.

Your pet must be calm, non-disruptive, and under your control (on leash or off) at all times. If it fights with other animals, is disruptive by barking or other behaviors, is threatening or causes damage to the site or its other occupants, or not under your control at all times you will be required to take the pet off-site with no refund.

For more information or to get a registration packet: contact Kirk at laurelin@sover.net or 802-234-9670

--------------------------------

A word from Chef Dave:

My name is Dave, I've been a professional chef for over a decade, working primarily in fine dining and "scratch" kitchens, most as either Sous or Head Chef. I have professionally taught culinary skills to high school students, catered weddings, opened restaurants, designed menus, and all the other tasks that come with that territory. Of all my prior work experiences, the donation of my time last year to Laurelin remains my favorite experience, as it allowed me to embrace my deepest roots as both a Reconstructionist and chef.

My greatest passion in preparing food is working with local ingredients, taking the time to meet the farmers who continue the traditions that are intertwined with our survival as a people. Lughnasadh is a festival of the harvest, and celebrating the continued bounty of our own bioregion is integral to our relationship with nature as pagans.

Last year I explored a variety of ingredients, one's that I knew we could easily glean from local farms. In the process I learned that there were more things within our climate zone that thrive than I realized. We used around 80% local ingredients last year, this year I am hoping for closer to 90% to 95% (certain things still cannot be procured locally).

As with last year, I do NOT take payment for what I do - this is my offering to the Gods. Thus, basically, what you spend to join the meal plan is what you get in return. If there is any funding left at the end, it is reinvested in the community. I very highly doubt any other festival can offer this, and I aim to produce the finest work of my career this year. Without ego, or arrogance, I can safely say you could not touch this level of food for this price ANYWHERE - simply put I do not have the overhead costs of brick & mortar or staff to get in my way of making my offering.

I am bringing in close friends to work with me this year, both with kitchen experience, and have had offers from at least one other. It is my goal to make the kitchen somewhat "self sufficient" in regards to production and clean up - though I will still certainly welcome help, as I did last year. Honestly, I just don't want to have to count on the community as much as I did last year - I wore myself a little thin, though I loved every second of it.

The BIG change from 2010 is my goal of setting up a mobile kitchen, and essentially launching the next phase of my career, right here at Laurelin. We will no longer be using Kirk's kitchen/porch to produce food, instead relying on portable catering equipment and, as best I can, environmentally friendly methodology (by next year I intend to use no gas/oil products - moving to a biodiesel generator and hardwood grilling primarily). This will eventually lead to my concept of a "green catering company" called Caravan. This year the
Caravan begins with the Harvest.

Hope to see you there!

Watch Your Words

The simplest of statements can change who you are and how you feel and
how you live.

Think about these statements for a moment and think of how many times
you may have said them …

I am broke
I am sick
I am hurt
I am sad
I am afraid
I can’t do it
I don’t know how…

Think for a moment how these statements effect you …

Now change your statement to define you in a better way

I’m not broke.. I just don’t have the money right now … but its
coming

I’m not sick .. I’m just not feeling my best at the moment .. but
better days are ahead

Here’s to using better words…

Many Blessings for a great and prosperous day,

Fw: Happy Heat!, Soul Journey Butler NJ

July 12, 2011

Dear Cher,

Welcome to the heat of the Summer!  I don't know about you, but I'm not a big lover of this humidity.  I hope you're surviving better than I am.

There are still a few reading spaces open with Raven and Stephanie Grimassi for August.  If the spaces don't fill in, we will have to move everyone over to the September date, so if you're interested in receiving a reading from this very insightful and dynamic couple, don't delay in calling to reserve your spot.  You won't be disappointed.  There are still a few spaces available for September, too.  And check out their Cauldron of Memory workshop in October.  Just click on the link to the right.

Speaking of classes, I'm working on the schedule.  We're planning a pendulum class, a Feng Shui class, and a Tarot class, so stay tuned.  And mark your calendar for December 10, when Warren and Susan Gonzales will be here for an all-day gem trunk show!  Details are coming, but the date's written in stone.

If you can't wait till December, I will be attending a gem show on August 12, so the store will be closed.  If there's anything you've been looking for and haven't been able to locate, let me know and I'll be on the look out.  Be prepared to provide the type of stone (even polished or rough), size, shape, and what price you're willing to pay for it.  I make no guarantees, but I'll definitely look for you.

If you're not already connected, please click on the link below to "like" us on Facebook.  Of, if you click over to the website, there's a link there too.  Classes and reminders get posted there first, before this newsletter goes out most of the time, so if you want to be the first on your block to know what's going on here, add us to your "likes."  I've also created a Twitter account, although I've only just started using it, so please follow us at #souljourneynj.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Sandi

What's Happening Today:

St Margaret - Famous in the medieval ages as a saint for women (she was one of the voices speaking to Joan of Arc), she has faded off the church calendar, probably because of lack of evidence for her existence. She is called Marina in the East. There's also a Saint Pelagia, whose nickname is Maragarito.

Both Marina and Pelagia mean sea. The name Margaret itself derives from the Greek word, maragarites, meaning pearl. These names link Margaret to the great Sea-Mother known under many names including Mary, Marina and Miriam. Pelagia is one of the names of Aphrodite in her aspect as the goddess of the sea. And July is the month of a Greek festival celebrating the wedding of Adonis and Aphrodite.

Margaret's story is similar to that of many virgin martyrs. She's said to be the daughter of a pagan priest at Antioch who rejected the advances of a prefect who then denounced her as a Christian. She suffered many ordeals, including being swallowed by Satan in the form of a dragon, but she caused his belly to burst and stepped forth unharmed. She was invoked by pregnant women for protection from the dangers of childbirth and for those who were dying for escape from the Devil.

Margaret is often represented standing over a dragon, like other saints, including Martha (whose feast day falls on the nearby July 28th). The Dragon Project researchers believe the image of slaying the dragon, which is always accomplished with an iron pole, has something to do with earthing energy which is floating about loose and might hurt the crops or the animals.

The Chinese say that the dragon is thunder (and this is the time of thunderstorms), a creature of the waters who rests in pools in the winter and rises up as the rain in the spring. The dragon is a symbol of the force operating beneath the surface of the earth which emerges at the proper time. Given the association of Margaret with water and the time of the year at which she is honored (the height of summer), it is possible that the dragon is really a sea-serpent. Perhaps when Margaret strikes the ground with her iron staff, she brings forth a life-giving spring or calls forth the flood waters of the Nile.

The wheatfield poppy supposedly sprang from the blood of the dragon she slew. Long before, it was dedicated to Diana and Demeter as the source of healing sleep and death. St Margaret's flower is the Virginian dragon's head.

Her feast day was sometimes seen as the start of the dog days, as in this mnemonic: Margaret is the dog’s mouth, Laurence (Aug 10) brings his tail.

St Wilgefortis or St Uncumber - Like St Distaff, whose feast day follows the Twelve Days of Christmas, she is a fictitious saint. Legend says that Wilgefortis was a daughter of the King of Portugal who did not wish to marry. When her father tried to press marriage upon her she prayed for help and sprouted a copious beard, which drove all prospective suitors away. Her name Wilgefortis may be derived from Virgo Fortis (Mighty Maiden). She is also known as Liberata, Livrade, Kummeris and Uncumber (in England) and invoked by women who wish to rid themselves of troublesome husbands or importunate suitors. Rago says you can achieve the same thing by picking parsley at dawn and wishing aloud for release.

Her story and feast day may derive from the stories of the Corinthian Aphrodite who grew a beard and impregnated women.

Tree Spirit Honoring Ritual

Tue Jul 19, 2011 8:26 pm (PDT)

Tree Spirit Honoring Ritual
Incense of the day: Musk

Today is the Lacuria, an ancient Roman festival honoring the spirits who lived in trees. This is a time
when land was cleared to make way for new fields. Land-owners wanted to
propitiate the spirits and prevent them from interfering with crop
production. Normally a pig would be slaughtered and a ritual prayer
given. To honor the tree spirits in your area make an offering of red
wine, grape juice, or even water to a grove or single tree while
uttering: “In honor of the Lacuria.”

The very order of the universe obeys
their commands, and so we pray to them:
Goddesses, may you add good destinies
to all you have in store for us.
May our fields be fertile, our herds vast,
and may your sister Ceres wear
great garlands of wheat this harvest time.
~Horace, Hymn for the Centennial

The Fates: they were
three spinning sisters, the Greeks and Romans said, who created the
thread of life, one who measured out its length, and one who cut it. Our fate was not entirely in our hands, for their powers were beyond us.
Our forebears did not believe that individuals could control their own
destiny; they would not coomprehend our superstition that the time of
our death is determined by the amount of exercise we engage in or the
number of antioxidants we consume (or do not consume). No, they were
aware that only some aspects of life are under our control. And the hour and year of our death is not one of those.
Living with awareness
that we do not choose nor control every aspect of our lives is not,
however, a morbid or depressinbg attitude. Rather, it frees us to
concentrate on what we can, in fact, control. We can decide where and
how to give our affestions; we can determine what acticities are worthy
of our time; we can decide what values to make our priorities. If we
cannot control the time of our life's ending, we can certainly control
how its precious moments are spent.

Staying Afloat
Riding the Wave of Life
While riding the wave of life you must also practice stillness so you can flow with, rather than resist the wave’s motion.

Our lives are continually in motion, buoyed by the wave that is the universe’s flow. As the wave rises and falls, we are carried forward, through life’s high and low points. The universe’s flow may take us to a place in life where we would rather not be. As tempting as it can be to fight the direction and size of this wave that propels us, riding the wave is intended to make life easier. When you ride the wave, your life can evolve naturally and with minimal effort. Riding the wave, however, is not a passive experience. It is an active process that requires you to be attentive, centered, and awake. You must also practice stillness so you can flow with, rather than resist the wave’s motion.

Because life is dynamic and always changing, it is when we try to make the wave stand still or resist its direction that we are likely to get pulled under by its weight. If you try to move against the wave, you may feel as if you are trapped by it and have no control over your destiny. When you reach a low point while riding the wave and find your feet touching bottom, remember to stay standing so that you can leap forward along with the wave the next time it rises. Trying to resist life’s flow is a losing proposition and costly because you waste energy.

Riding the wave allows you to move forward without expending too much of your own efforts. When you ride the wave, you are carried by it and your head can “stay above water” as you go wherever it takes you. It can be difficult to trust the universe and let go of the urge to fight life’s flow, and you may find it easier to ride the wave if you can stay calm and relaxed. Riding the wave will always take you where you need to go.
