Three MORE Great Reasons to go to Laurelin's Lughnasadh festival thi

Posted by: "Kirk White" laurelin@sover.net   laurelinkirk

Wed Jul 27, 2011 10:49 am (PDT)

Our Events (not counting all of the drumming, rituals and such):

Pagan Goods Swap Meet

After many years, we are again offering folks the opportunity to swap their Pagan-themed goods (or anything that Pagans might like - so really anything) with their fellow Lughnasadh attendees. Bring your goods, a blanket or other way to display them and your powers of negotiation because the Swap is back. But don't forget to bring some way to get your untraded goods home with you - Laurelin will not be responsible for items left here! The Swap is Saturday morning, 9-10:30, between the vendors and the main tent.

Another Wonderful Speaker!

Courtney Weber

Courtney is a Priestess, writer, Tarot Advisor, performer and activist originally from Portland, OR. She received ordination as a Priestess of Pan from Rev. Cyn DeFay of the Cluan-Feart Mystery School in 2005 and a Third Degree Initiation as a Priestess of Brid from Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone in 2009. She is the HPS of Novices of the Old Ways, a Progressive Wiccan and Pagan group based in New York City and Portland, Oregon. Courtney is a Masters of Divinity Candidate at Union Theological Seminary. She is the producer and designer of "Tarot of the Boroughs," a contemporary, Urban Tarot deck set in New York City with photography by George Courtney.

The Ethics of Spellcraft (Friday - 10:30 - 12:00)

When to cast? When to bind? When even....to curse? Witches today are flooded

with information on spells--but when is it necessary to use them? Are love spells

really "manipulative"? Is binding really "black magick"? Are there times when

you really do need to break out the poppet and pin? This class opens dialog on

when it's time to get down and dirty with your magick--and when it's better to step

away. Led by a Witch with more humorously disastrous spell stories than Disney

could imagine, this class will not seek to provide rules on when to cast--but help

the participants formulate their own questions and better reflect on the best use of

their own magick. Class will also provide new spell recipes. Great for the novice

or the experienced!

The Five Fold Kiss: Energetic Mechanic Technique for Drawing Down the Moon/Sun (Saturday - 10:30 - 12:00)

The Five-Fold Kiss is frequently practiced Drawing Down trance work. This class

will demonstrate how the energy works in this practice and how we can best wield

use of it. For those who are interested in channeling or trance as part of their ritual

work, this is a very useful tool.

Our Rituals!

Audience with Arianrhod: Goddess of the Stars

Through pathworking and chanting, attendees will have the opportunity to open aspects of themselves in order to align with their own best destiny. A trance seer will bring throug the Goddess Arianrhod ("Priestess of the Moon") to speak to the guests.

Camping and Overnight Accommodations

Again this year, we are going to let people camp wherever they want - in the field, forest or in-between. The pottapotties, showers, potable water, meals and concerts will all still be down near the house so if you camp in the woods, plan to get your hiking in. There will be designated fire pits. Do not make new ones. This time of year is typically dry but rainstorms have been known to happen, so we strongly recommend you bring a tarp or ground cloth to put under your tent.

Parking space is limited, so no campers or RV's, please.
There are a limited number of B&B's and inns in Bethel and nearby towns. Please contact Laurelin staff if you would like further information.

Toilets, Showers, and Water
Port-a-potties will be available on-site. There is an outdoor shower with warm water. (You may want to bring solar showers if you like warm/ hot showers). There is an outdoor sink for washing dishes and drinking water. All of these are down near the main house.

Meal Plan
We will again be offering our delicious meal plan - with both carnivore and vegetarian options - catered by the amazing Chef Dave. It includes: breakfast, lunch and dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and brunch on Sunday (10 meals).

The plan can be bought either for the whole festival, Friday through Sunday, or just Saturday and Sunday. If you are signing up for the meal plan, we need your registration NO LATER than July 15th.

Please also let us know right away if you have any special dietary needs/ allergies.

Village Builders
This year we will be having a special day for those people who would like to come together as a smaller group to share, connect and participate in the creation of our magickal village. In ritual and with magickal intent, we will break into teams each dedicated to creating and maintaining one aspect of our magickal community - some hard physical labor, and others less so. Arrival is by Noon on Tuesday, August 3rd. There is no cost for coming to Village Builders however the meal plan will be offered (dinner on Tuesday, breakfast, lunch and dinner on Wednesday). Cost for the Builders meal plan is an additional $28.00.

Workshops, Rituals, and Activities
If you have an idea for a workshop, ritual, discussion, performance, or children's activity - we'd LOVE to hear about it! Don't be shy - we're open to any and all ideas. Help us make Lughnasadh an exciting, rich and fun-filled experience that will keep everyone coming back year after year (and bringing more friends too!). Send your proposals via email to: laurelin@sover.net before July 1st. (Sooner is better!) You will be notified by July 8th whether or not it is accepted.

Vendor Info
We'd love to have lots of vendors for Lughnasadh 2011! Crafts, clothing, food, mead, New Age, whatever! We've got plenty of space and there is no fee for merchanting; however, we do ask a 10% commission on your sales at the end of the event. One person (the merchant) can have their registration fee waived. Any guests/ helpers would have to pay full registration. You still have to provide your own food, travel, etc. Please complete the Vendor Registration form and return it with your reservation along with photos of your booth and/or website information. These can be very useful for promoting you before you even get here. Please bring your own setup/display, weather protection, and safe storage facilities.

Pets/ Dogs
Dogs are welcome this year at the festival. However, you MUST provide proof of rabies vaccination or your dog will not be permitted. Further, all dogs must be kept on-leash at all times in the fields or around the house. They are free to run loose in the wooded areas. You are expected to pick up and dispose of any waste left in areas where people will be walking, camping, etc.

Your pet must be calm, non-disruptive, and under your control (on leash or off) at all times. If it fights with other animals, is disruptive by barking or other behaviors, is threatening or causes damage to the site or its other occupants, or not under your control at all times you will be required to take the pet off-site with no refund.

For more information or to get a registration packet: contact Kirk at laurelin@sover.net or 802-234-9670

Hope to see you there!

Introduction to Tarot: Week 2: Get Ready to Read the Cards

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Wed Jul 27, 2011 1:30 pm (PDT)

Introduction to Tarot

Week 2: Get Ready to Read the Cards
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism / Wicca
So how, exactly, do you do a Tarot reading? Well, for starters, you'll want to prepare your deck -- and yourself -- before you get going. We'll also look this week at different things you'll need to know about interpreting the cards themselves. Finally, we'll dig right in to the first group of cards in the Major Arcana!
How to Prepare for a Tarot Reading

So you've got your Tarot deck, you've figured out how to keep it safe from negativity, and now you're ready to read for someone else. Perhaps it's a friend who's heard about your interest in Tarot. Maybe it's a coven sister in need of guidance. Perhaps -- and this happens a lot -- it's a friend of a friend, who has a problem and would like to see "what the future holds." Let's talk about the things you should do before you take on the responsibility of reading cards for another person. Go There

Interpreting the Cards

Now that you've laid down your Tarot cards, this is where the real fun begins. If someone has come to you as a Querent, it's because they want to know what's going on -- what sorts of things will present obstacles to them, what positive outcomes they can expect, that sort of thing. But they also want it to be interesting. After all, anyone can flip open a book and read that the Ten of Cups means contentment and happiness. What they really want to know is how does it apply to them, specifically? Go There

The Major Arcana, Part 1
Cards 0 - 7: The Material World

Within the Major Arcana, there are three distinct groups of cards, each representing a different aspect of the human experience. The first set, Cards 0 - 7, reflect issues pertaining to the material world - situations related to job success, education, finances, and marriage. The 0 Card, the Fool, begins his journey through life, and travels the road throughout the cards. As he does, he learns and grows as a person.

* 0 - The Fool
* 1 - The Magician
* 2 - The High Priestess
* 3 - The Empress
* 4 - The Emperor
* 5 - The Hierophant
* 6 - The Lovers
* 7 - The Chariot

Exercise: A Single Card

For this week's homework, we're going to keep things very basic. Set aside the eight cards referenced above. Take some time to get to know their meanings, both forward and reversed. Each day, before you do anything else, draw one of these cards at random. As your day progresses, take some time to reflect on how the day's events connect and relate to the card you drew in the morning. You may want to keep a journal of which cards you draw, and what happens throughout the day. Also, at the end of the week, look back and see if one card has appeared more often than others. What do you think it's trying to tell you?

Next Week: The Major Arcana, Part 2

In Week 3, we'll look at the next seven cards in the Major Arcana, as well as the suits of Pentacles and Wands. Have a magical week!

DailyOM: Spirit of the Sea

DailyOM - Whale Medicine
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

July 27, 2011
Spirit of the Sea
Whale Medicine
Like the whales each of us has a unique song or gift to offer the world as is meant to be heard by others.

Native Americans teach us that the Great Spirit speaks to us through our animal brethren. The whale is one animal that we can learn from. Whales have existed for over 50 million years and are considered to be record-keepers who possess knowledge of the past.

It is through the vibrations of their unique sound that they release this ancient wisdom to us. At the same time, their sound carries across such great distances that whales can enter the realm of the future where they can acquire knowledge of what is to come. Every whale sings a song, and they never repeat the same pattern when they sing their song. Since whales must be conscious at all times in order to breathe, they cannot afford to fall into an unconscious state for too long. Never completely asleep, their brain has constant access to the collective unconscious where all answers lie. Whales float peacefully, secure in the ocean environment that supports and sustains them.

You can learn from the wisdom of whales by remembering to express what’s uniquely yours. Each of us has a unique “song” or gift to offer the world. Your song is meant to be sung by you and heard by others. No one else can sing this song but you, and your song is medicine for the healing of the planet. Like whales, you can choose to access information about the future when you go into a meditative state. Whales teach us to look at where we came from and where we are headed. Knowing that our past helps shape our future, we can remember to make positive choices regarding our lives, the environment, and our world. Like whales, we can remember to stay awake and actively engaged in a universe that supports and sustains us. When we express ourselves and share our unique gifts, we add our wisdom and vibration to the planet.

Art of Mentoring

Creating Resilient Mentors, Village & Community

August 14-19, 2011

Santa Cruz Mountains, California

Facilitated by Jon Young, Mark Morey, Lauren Dalberth, David Hage & a
Team of experienced leaders, facilitators, and educators from around
the world.

For More Information Click Here

Because it Takes a Village to…
Engage the gifts of our elders
Create essential rites of passage for our teens
Ensure parents are supported and thriving
Welcome our babies into a world of open arms
Feel deep compassion and gratitude for All of Our Relations
Understand your gifts and how to apply them in service to the people.

Course Description

The Art of Mentoring is a week-long, experiential, nature based
program designed to help us remember these old ways and learn to apply
them to our modern communities. Guided by a team of experienced
leaders and facilitators from around the world, Art of Mentoring
participants come together to experience, learn from and co-create a
joyful, engaged learning community. You will walk away with tools and
embodied practices of regenerative community design, mentoring
techniques, deep nature connection, and an amplified passion for
learning. Deep in all of our roots, there are stories of our ancestors
living in healthy, regenerative communities—villages where people of
all ages were in deep relationship with the land, each other, and
themselves. Our hope is to activate and inspire you to create healthy
communities right in your own back yard!

The course is taught through group experiential activities, lectures,
storytelling, and music. We will be both indoors and outside exploring
in the field.

This is a Family Friendly Event!

Creating a village where the whole family is welcome, supported and
growing together is an important element to the Art of Mentoring
culture. In that spirit, there are youth nature connection programs
for children aged 4-12 and a teen program for youth ages 13-18. Both
the teen program and the youth program run concurrently with the adult
program, overlapping for most meals (read further for more information).

Youth Program

The Youth & Kids' programs include sensory awareness games and
exercises, earth living skills, native scout skills, arts and crafts,
music and storytelling, and getting to know the natural world through
"native eyes." Children learn these skills and knowledge through
artful mentoring that taps into their passions and interests.

The Youth Program for children 7-12 old and the Kid's Program for 4-6
year-olds make it possible for the whole family to attend the Art of
Mentoring and is a critical part of the living culture of awareness.
The children add the spark of playfulness as they interact with
workshop participants at mealtimes and the evenings. Participants also
get to witness mentoring at work with children as the children
explore, imagine and play outside with the guidance of a regional
network of instructors. The children in turn have an enlivened
experience of what it might be like to live in a village surrounded by
adults looking out for them.

AOM Teen Program: Mountains to Sea Teen Rendezvous

The AOM Teen Program is designed to immerse teens in wilderness living
and adventure. Guided by a team of experienced nature connection
mentors, the teens will connect more deeply to the natural world,
their peers and themselves through daily activities including
primitive skills, tracking, awareness games, scout skills, team
building, etc.

The week will culminate with an overnight backpack leaving from the
Art of Mentoring base camp and heading out from the mountains to the
sea and back again.

Enriching the experience and making it more than "overnight camp," the
Teen Program will have connections with a community of elders, aunts,
uncles, and youth that have formed around the Art of Mentoring. The
teens will leave with an embodied experience of what it might be like
to live in a village surrounded by adults looking out for them. They
will play an important role in bringing back the stories of the
landscape to the village at large.

Opportunities for Returning Participants!

This year there is a 2nd level experience in the Art of Mentoring for
folks who have previously attended an Art of Mentoring and want to
deepen their experience being a mentor for others. This "Ring 2
experience will include staff guided nature connection and core
routine activities deepening your capacity to guide others in nature
connection and core routines. There is a limit of 20 in this program.

Goddess is a Democrat !! Imagine the feedback from that statement in my
interviews with Riane Eisler and Starhawk on my radio show, Voices of
the Sacred Feminine. But what were we really saying in that statement
that might not have been immediately evident? We were saying the
strategy to move us toward that paradigm shift, into a post-kyriarchal
world, would not just be the use of secular law, but through a change in
thealogy - the mythology of the Sacred Feminine, deity, archetype and
ideal, might re-establish the foundations on our planet necessary for
sustainable future for all life and Mother Earth. Hear the line of
thought....presented at the WECSOR/American Academy of Religion by Dr.

Goddess For Today: Old Woman of the Sea Sandcastle Days (California)

Goddess For Today: Old Woman of the Sea
Sandcastle Days (California)

Themes:  Water; Recreation; Rest; Art
Symbols:  Sand; Saltwater; Sea Creatures

About the Old Woman of the Sea:  Among the Native Americans of California, this simple designation says it all.  This goddess is a primordial being whose essence and power is linked with the ocean and all that dwells within.  Old Woman of the Sea washes into our lives today with waves of refreshment and relaxation.  She is also a powerful helpmate for all water-related magic.

To Do Today:  Sandcastle-building competitions began in Imperial Beach, California in 1981.  Many of the artistically crafted sculptures feature sea creatures and other water themes.  Alongside the festival, all manner of community activities take place, including children's competitions, feasting, and live music.  So, stop by a gardening store and get yourself a little sand!  Mix up some saltwater to mold and shape it.  As you do, listen to some watery music, and focus on the Old Woman of the Sea.  Try to capture her magical power in your heart.

If you live anywhere near a beach, today's a perfect time to practice sand and water magic.  Write a symbol in the sand describing what you hope to achieve, then let the tide carry it to the Old Woman for an answer.  Or, step into the surf and let the goddess draw away your tension and anxiety into her watery depths.

Pick up some small stones at the beach this summer
and try this treatment.

If you stand on your feet all day here is
a treatment to help with swelling and circulation.
1 drop Cypress
1 drop Lavender

add to a bowl of warm water to which about 12 smooth
round pebbles have been added.

Roll the soles of your feet slowly over the pebbles
for a few minutes, then dry your feet.

Warmth of the Sun Ritual

 Warmth of the Sun Ritual

Summer is at its height right now. It is a perfect time to take advantage of
the deep heat of the Sun for magical ritual. Go outside today and turn
your face, with your eyes closed, to the Sun. Feel the warmth, and see
the light passing through your eyelids. Visualize the light flowing down into your body. As it fills you to overflowing, it brings health and
vitality to your every cell. See this light flow into the land around
you. Visualize a small Sun beginning to form in the center of your body. Feel this expand and glow as the warmth and energy of the Sun in the
sky merges with your personal energy. The radiance extends out beyond
your body in a protective oval of light. You are connected to all
things. Repeat this ritual any time you feel drained, depressed, or ill.

Invocation From The Sia People

Come in, come up the ladder,
spirits of rain, spirits of rain.
Come in, come and sit down,
spirits of cloud, spirits of cloud.
Listen: long ago, we were poor,
but we came out of that poor place.
We passed through that poor place
with your help, with your help.
Now come, help us again,
spirits of rain, spirits of cloud.
Come bring your showers,
come bring the heavy rain.
Come in, come up the ladder
spirits of cloud, spirits of rain.
~Invocation From The Sia People

Even in the midst of
what appears to be plenty, we still have needs. Winter's chill is gone,
the harvest is burgeoning in the fields, the time of hunger seems past.
Yet too much wind, too little rain, too little sun, too much rain - any
of these can endanger the growth that seems so strong. A happy harvest
is never inevitable.

Similarly, even when we seem to have much, we may still want more. It is possible, as a result, to become ungrateful for what we have, to spit in Fortune's face. But,
even if we look thankfully at all the good things life brings us, we
will still find needs and wants unmet. This is life. Even those you are
at the top of life's mountain will still have unmet needs., thwarted
desires. Acknowledge them, seek to satisfy them, but never forget to be
thankful for what you have..

What is Community

Community

Somewhere there are people to whom we can speak with passion
without having the words catch in our throats. Somewhere a circle of hands will open to receive us, eyes will light up as we enter, voices will celebrate with us whenever we come into our own power.

Community means strength that joins our strength to do the work that needs to be done. Arms to hold us when we falter. A circle of healing. A circle of friends. Someplace where we can be free. ~Starhawk

That is what Community is, it's not fighting, it's not stealing, It's not hatred, it's not lieing, it's not about money, it's about people...New Jersey Pagans is Community!
