Samhain Magic--Part 2

Spell to Bless the Bones

At Samhain, when our thoughts just naturally turn to skeletons, we perform this spell to send a message of healing, health, and wholeness to our bones, magically made of the earth's minerals, the firm structure that gives us fundamental support. You may want to do this together with your family. Encourage younger children to touch each of their bones as you name them. You may also perform this spell on your loved ones, placing your hands gently on each area and sending loving energy into each bone.

Stand with your knees flexed, about shoulder-width apart, and begin to sway gently from foot to foot, back and forth, quietly, rhythmically. Bring your awareness to the bones of your feet. there are many, many of them. They are your primary place of connection to the Earth. As you sway, say these words, aloud or to yourself:

Bless you,, bones of my feet.

Now become aware of your ankle bones, shin bones, knees, thigh bones. These bones help you get from place to place:

Bless you, bones of my legs.

Bring attention to your spine, hips, ribs. These bones cradle your organs and keep you upright.

Bless you, bones of my trunk.

Now bring your consciousness to your collarbone, shoulders, upper arms, elbows, lower arms, wrists, and hands. So many bones. These bones help you to do--to cook, to eat, to please others, to please yourself.

Bless you, bones of my arms and hands.

Now hold your neck and skull in your magical awareness. These bones support and hold the wondrous head, seat of so many senses.

Bless you, bones of my neck and head.
Strength and healing to my bones.
May they serve my soul's purpose and support me on my path.
Blessed be, blessed bones.

Scrying Brew and Scrying Meditation

Samhain is the prime time for deep seeing, divination, magical workings and rituals of all kinds. Instead of making Halloween a holiday focused on sugar and scariness, we can remember the sacred roots of this night and try the following magical recipe.

Scrying Brew

The ancient Celts knew that spirits were abroad on Samhain, that magic was as thick as sweet-smelling smoke, perfuming the air with possibilities. This Celtic New Year's Eve is the perfect night for divination. the loving ancestors who surround you like a warm cloak to keep away the winter chill will look into the future with you to see what gifts and lessons lie in store, what choices you can make to ease the way.

While many of us spend time with our runes and tarot cards tonight, there is an even simpler way to dialogue with the inner self, something that doesn't require any purchased cards, stones, or other props. It's called scrying, and it's something our own ancestors knew how to do. Scrying is simply gazing at any dark surface until mental chatter ceases and consciousness shifts. wisdom may come in the form of actual images that seem to take shape on the surface, or pictures or words that form in your mind. Just about anything can be used as a scrying surface--the much-touted crystal ball is one possibility, as are elaborate scrying mirrors. But even simple country people knew how to scry using pools of water, bowls of broth--or cups of tea. the special tea below will actually help you to scry. Its primary ingredient, the herb mugwort, is the divination ally of choice; so you can drink most of what's in your cup and then scry in the remainder. Happy Samhain!

The herbs used in this tea are available from your local natural foods store, or from herbal companies by mail.

1 cup water
3 tablespoons or more dried mugwort (not only good for helping us to contact our inner wisdom, but also very relaxing)
1/4 cup dried oatstraw (good for the nerves; if the Halloween partying and trick-or-treating have left you feeling frazzled, oatstraw will be a comfort)
1 cinnamon stick, 2 to 3 inches long (for its delicious flavor)
Maple syrup, honey, or brown sugar (optional)

Boil the water, then add to a teapot into which the mugwort, oatstraw, and cinnamon stick have been placed.

Steep for at least 15 minutes. Strain and pour into a dark-colored mug, preferably black. Sweeten with maple syrup, honey, or brown sugar, if desired.

Now, sit comfortably in your Power Place with your mug. Sniff your Scrying Brew, feeling the steam, warm as breath, on your face. take a sip and savor the earthy taste. As you sip, become aware of your breathing. Is it shallow or deep, quick or slow? As you drink, be with your breath without attempting to change it. When the tea is nearly gone, gradually turn your attention to the surface of the liquid remaining in your mug. Gaze at it without effort, simply letting yourself be wit the mug and the tea. The disk where tea meets air may look silvery if it catches a light's reflection. As you look, pay some dreamy attention to the thoughts that flash through your mind like fish. What are they? All over the world, people are scrying and dreaming tonight. What images do you see? take as much time as you can. You may want to leave the remainder of the tea in its mug on your kitchen altar as an offering for your long-forgotten kindred who knew how to perform this ancient ritual.

When to Consult the Tarot

When to Consult the Tarot
By Psychic Marin ext. 5113

I am frequently asked, "Is it unlucky to read Tarot cards for myself?" The "rules" to the Tarot are actually quite the contrary! The origins of this myth are unknown, and in fact, an intimate bond with the Tarot manifests from personal use and reading for yourself.
For those wanting to tap into Tarot's wealth of information, there are countless books available, and thousands of decks now in publication to suit your special interest. You will find several books that concentrate on the interpretation of the cards, while others choose to focus on the psychic connection while handling the Tarot. A devotion to studying the Tarot will certainly reward you with a greater understanding; however, you may wonder: When do I consult the Tarot? How do I use the Tarot for myself on a regular basis? How can I use and increase my connection with the Tarot when I am not in a situation where I can read for others?
What follows is a list of suggestions for when you may want to consult the Tarot:
Tarot-a-Day
Draw a Tarot card each morning, upon waking, to start your day with a special message and indication of what the day will bring. This is also an excellent learning tool for those less acquainted with the Tarot. After drawing the card, ask your guides to teach you about the meaning of the card throughout the day's experiences. At the end of the day, look up the meaning of the card and compare the accuracy and application of the meaning of the card to the day's events.
New Year Readings
For New Year readings, I suggest that you pull one card for each month, making note of the energy of each month and what to expect in the year ahead. Make sure to write the reading down on paper, including any emotional reactions or psychic hits so you can refer to your notes as the year progresses.
Birthday Readings
I always encourage other Tarot students and enthusiasts to give yourself a reading on your birthday. As with any significant reading that you will want to refer to, note the cards and their placement in the reading to see what you are encountering on your personal journey and what the Tarot reveals as important highlights for the coming year.
On the Go
As a busy mom, I am always on the go, and always in my car! So what did I discover? That a traditional size Tarot deck fits very nicely into my car's cup holder! When I am stopped at a red light, and a thought crosses my mind or I am feeling anxious about a particular situation, I reach over and pull a single card to get a quick answer. I've also noticed that when I have a passenger with me, they too are drawn to the cards and will either comment about the cards, or will pick a card and inquire, "What does this card mean?"
Consulting the Tarot About Lifestyle Decisions
These types of readings are performed most frequently, as the occasion arises, concerning the main issues in our lives; love and relationships, career, money and health. The Tarot can be used as a compatibility assessing tool and a source of comfort during the beginning of a relationship when emotions prove too intense to gauge its longevity or reality. In our difficult economy, it can be comforting to consult the Tarot about the future, including aspects of financial security, job advancement and even material purchases. For health situations, the Tarot can be used as an intuitive guide, and maybe even a first response that something just isn't quite "right," but never to diagnose or replace a visit to the doctor!

Spontaneous Readings…
I always keep a pocket size deck in my purse. I have been asked for a reading in the most unimaginable places, including alongside a football game, at restaurants and coffee shops and, more commonly, at social mixers. It is amazing how fun a party can become when the guests realize there is a Tarot reader in the house, and you may be fortunate enough to bring home a little extra cash from tips! This is an excellent source for those wanting to expand on their skills or for new readers considering building a private Tarot-reading business.
When You Don't Like What You See
Occasionally, consulting the Tarot for lifestyle situations can shed some light during difficult times, but it can become an obsession. It is best to work with the Tarot on a variety of different aspects of your life, and accepting the answer or insight you are given the first time. If you do not like the information offered, there can be a tendency to repeat the reading, hoping for a more positive outcome. Albert Einstein commented that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results. Repeating a reading on the same topic over and over again will simply lead to nonsense… or insanity!
The sacred Tarot is a mystery in itself. There are theories about the cards' origin, and occasionally a historical reference presents among Tarot scholars, but the true origins remain uncertain. Regardless of their foundation, the Tarot deeply resonates with many of us, drawing us closer, wanting to be unveiled to reveal a deeper sense of wisdom and a source of guidance in our lives.

Break the Power of a Spell

Break the Power of a Spell

If you believe that a spell has been cast against you, place a large black candle in the cauldron (or a large black bowl). The candles must be tall enough to extend a few inches above the cauldron's rim. Affix the candle to the bottom of the cauldron with warmed beeswax or the drippings of another black candle so that it will not tip over.

Fill the cauldron to the rim with fresh water, without wetting the candle's wick. An inch or two should remain above the water. Deeply breathe, meditate, clear your mind and light the candle. Visualize the suspected spell's power as residing within the candle's flame. Sit in quiet contemplation of the candle and visualize the power flowing and growing within the candle's flame. (Yes, the power against you) As the candle burns down, its flame will eventually sputter and go out as it contacts the water. As soon as the flame has been extinguished by the water, the spell
will be dispersed.

Break your visualization of the spell's power; see it explode into dust, becoming impotent.

Pour the water into a hole in the ground, a lake or stream. Bury the candle. It is done.
