Dream Catchers Class with Rev. Jenn Nashoba

-They are seen all over the place; car mirrors, walls, swap meets, and
cheesy giftshops (with the "Made in Taiwan" sticker carefully placed) ...
you name it...

-But what are they, who started making them, what is the surrounding lore,
why do they catch dreams, and what are we supposed to do with our caught
dreams?

-Most of all, how do we make them?
That's exactly what we will do. We will be making dreamcatchers with
(mostly) traditional materials.

-Once you make one, you can use the technique in several ways. Dreamcatchers
come in any size--from large centerpieces in company lobbies to tiny
earring/necklace charms. The materials are only limited to the imagination;
driftwood, cedar boughs, or metal.

**Tuition is $15** ( (free to those registered for the Drum Making II class,
which is held directly after.) )

What's Happening Today:

# Apaturia- Old Greek festival in which newcomers and children were welcomed
into the community.

# Delivering Winter Clothes - The third festival of the dead celebrated during
the year. On the first day of the tenth Chinese lunar month, the Chinese often
visit graves where they burn offerings of winter clothes and notes drawn on the
Bank of Hell, wrapped in parcels and addressed to the intended recipient. Often
a Bill of Lading is drawn up, an inventory of the items sent, which is signed
and counter-signed by witnesses. This bill is burnt with the other items, so
that the dead can be assured they received everything. Sometimes an extra parcel
is burnt to propitiate hungry spirits who might otherwise steal the offerings.
The gifts are usually exhibited in the home first (where the ancestors can
partake of them spiritually). They are burnt outside in the courtyard or near
the graves. Blackburn, Bonnie & Leofranc Holford-Strevens, Oxford Companion to
the Year, Oxford University Press 1999 Eberthard, Wolfran, Chinese Festivals,
NY: Henry Schuman 1952, pp. 135-6

# St Isidore/Ochossi - Patron of farm workers, his emblem is a sickle. Ochossi:
When those practising African religions were exposed to Christianity, they often
adopted the images and holidays of Catholic saints who resembled their gods.
Thus Isidore stands in for Ochossi, In the Vodou tradition, this day is a
holiday honoring the Vegetation Deity in the Vodou tradition. Teish, Luisah,
Jambalaya, Harper San Francisco 1984

# Feast of the Holy Souls - The beginning of the 13-day Feast of the Dead for
the Tzeltals of Mexico. Graves are decorated with pine needles and tusus (yellow
wild flowers).

# Makoshe's Holiday - Slavic Pagans:Pasdernic (October) 25 to Gruden (November)
1. We celebrate this holiday on the Friday between October 25 and November 1. On
this day we honor Mother Earth and give gratitude to her for her care and
concern for us. The central icon for this feast is the vegetable.

# China: Festival of Han Lu - In honor of the moon and Harvest
Goddess, Han Lu.

# Greece: Day of the Dioscuri, or the twins Castor and Pollux.

# Slavic Pagans: Makoshe's Holiday - Pasdernic (October) 25 to Gruden (November)
1. We celebrate this holiday on the Friday between October 25 and November 1. On
this day we honor Mother Earth and give gratitude to her for her care and
concern for us. The central icon for this feast is the vegetable.

# St Crispin & St. Crispinian - These two saints were brothers and shoemakers
who were martyred under Diocletian. They are patrons of shoemakers and their
festival was celebrated in England by cobblers, giving rise to the rhyme from
Ross:

Today's Goddess:   Felicitas Sweetest Day (United States)

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Sun Oct 24, 2010 8:08 pm (PDT)

Today's Goddess: Felicitas
Sweetest Day (United States)

Themes: Kindness, Charity, Love, Romance, Joy, Success, Luck
Symbols: Greetings (Greeting cards)

About Felicitas: This Roman Goddess brings happiness, success and good fortune
whenever someone salutes another with good words or amiable deeds. She comes to
us today to energize late fall and early winter with the transformational power
of kindness.

To Do Today: While Sweetest Day seems to be focused on lovers these days, in
earlier years it represented an opportunity to shower anyone and everyone with
cheerful trinkets, kind acts and gentle words to lift people's spirits.

By looking to Felicitas for help, we return this holiday to its original form
and bring joy to people who might otherwise be feeling a case of autumn blues.
Look for, or make, some humorous greeting cards to send to folks you know would
appreciate the thought. Lay your hands on them and invoke Felicitas's blessings
in any way that feels right.

To improve the effect further, anoint the cards with rejuvenating aromatic oils
that match the recipient's needs (such as pine for money, rose for love or
peace, cinnamon to luck, sandalwood for health and lavender to combat
depression) This way, when the recipient opens that card, the magic and the
aroma will be released together to bless, energize and bear Felicitas's
greetings along with your heartfelt wishes!

Call-of-the-Ocean Fertility Spell

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Sun Oct 24, 2010 8:11 pm (PDT)

Call-of-the-Ocean Fertility Spell
Incense of the day: Myrrh

This spell draws upon the primordial womb of the ocean to increase your
fertility and to dispel some of the hindrances standing in your way. Place an
iron nail in a bottle of ocean water while saying: "As this iron decreases, so
do the obstacles in my path." Place the bottle somewhere out of the way and
forget about it. To make a substitute if there is no ocean water available,
take some spring water and add a good amount of sea salt and some sand to it.

Babylonian Songs

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Sun Oct 24, 2010 8:12 pm (PDT)

They have released against, our lady Ishtar,
the sixty miseries:miseries of the eyes, of the heart,
of the head, of the sides, miseries against her feet,
miseries against every part of her, miseries
against the entire body of our Goddess.

Since our lady Ishtar descended, all has changed:
the bull does not mate with the cow, not the ass
with it's jenny, nothing is stirring in that way,
in the city, men lie alone in their chambers,
and women lie alone, on their sides.
~Babylonian Songs

We remain in the period of the year symbolized by the decent of the Goddess into
the underworld. The light continues to
decline, made especially noticeable when daylight-saving time is reversed and
darkness seems to come all too quickly each evening. Our foremothers would have
completed most of the year's outdoor tasks by this time. Crops would be
harvested,

cattle butchered, wild foods gathered. With the time of production behind, it
was now time to spin and weave, to mend the

garments worn thin during the busy summer, to teach children the cautionary
tales of older times.

Today our tasks are rarely determined by the seasons and the weather. Rain or
snow, winter or summer, we report to work,

move papers, have meetings, sell products. We live differently than people did
for most of human history. But our bodies

have not altered. We still respond to the dimming daylight by drawing inward, by
changing our sleep patterns, by finding

different tings taking priority in our lives. It's futile to fight against this
annual cycle. Embracing it, living our lives by it, will
ultimately make us happier.

When Witches Gather Rain

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

When Witches Gather Rain
.
Witches have always known the special meaning of nature's acts. They are
warnings, blessings and magic guides to our

living in the world around us. Rain is a special gift from the sky and its power
should be used wisely. Try never to shelter
yourself from its fall, but rather accept the rain as we should accept live with
all of its trials and blessings.

* Rain while the sun shines is a healing rain. Catch and store it in blue glass.
Use the water for all manner of healing magic.

Place in the bath for an overall body cleaning.

* The blessing of fairies is upon anyone who catches rain in a silver spoon
after the rain has bounced off a flat stone. Place

some of this water on any object that is frequently misplaced. Keys are always a
good choice.

* Place midnight rain of a New Moon on the third eye to bring visions and see
future events.

* The first rain gathered in May is symbolic of May Day dew and holds much
power. It is used when very special favors are needed. Do not gather this rain
in a metal container or its power will be lost. A glass or wood container
would do much better.

*When rain runs off a gravestone, gather carefully and use with caution.

*Rain gathered during a thunderstorm holds much energy and can be used to
enhance spells and potions. But be aware
that the energy does not last long and the spell should be completed before
three days and three nights have passed or the
rain water will be of little use.

* House plants enjoy the outdoor rain - this cleanses their leaves and helps to
purify the indoor air when they are brought
back in the home. This is especially good to do when you are in need of a clear
mind and strong thought.

* Jewelry, charms and other objects can be purified by standing in the rain,
facing west and tossing the object into the air,

three times, catching it in your hands each time,

* The sound of the rain carries the voices of the water spirits. Listen to the
sound of the rain and enjoy the gifts of the undines.

They will speak to you of love and friends.

The wise also realize that rain is just one aspect of nature. We should look to
the wind, trees, lightning, fire, stones, and other
forms of nature's expression for clues to the magic of the world.
